LONDON — Tesla’s sales across Europe took a sharp dive last month, dropping nearly 50%, even as the overall electric vehicle market in the region kept growing. The stark contrast signals that the backlash against Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk—mainly over his controversial far-right political views—is hitting the brand hard.

According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), Tesla sold just 7,261 vehicles in 32 European countries in April, down from 14,228 in the same month last year. Meanwhile, sales of battery-electric vehicles from all other manufacturers surged by about 28%. Gasoline and diesel car sales continued to decline, highlighting the shift toward electric cars—but Tesla isn’t benefiting.

This trend confirms earlier reports from countries like Sweden, the Netherlands, and Denmark, where Tesla sales had already shown a steep decline earlier this month.

What’s Driving Tesla’s Decline?

Tesla’s falling numbers aren’t just about politics. While Musk’s outspoken views have sparked protests and boycotts, the company faces several other challenges:

Aging Model Lineup: Tesla’s current vehicles are getting older, and competitors are catching up with fresh, appealing designs.

Rising Competition: Chinese electric vehicle brands, known for affordable prices, are gaining ground fast. For example, SAIC—owner of UK-based MG with its low-cost EV models—saw a 54% sales jump in Europe last month.

Factory Shutdowns: Tesla paused production at its factories for several weeks this year to upgrade its popular Model Y SUV, limiting supply and hurting sales.

Trade Tensions: The ongoing U.S.-EU trade tensions, including threats from former President Trump to impose hefty tariffs on European goods, have soured European consumers on American brands.

Tesla’s Overall European Performance

Looking at the first four months of 2025, Tesla’s European sales are down roughly 39%, totaling around 61,320 vehicles sold. In contrast, Europe’s overall auto market remained mostly steady, showing little change during the same period.

Interestingly, despite the economic uncertainty worldwide, overall car sales in the European Union nudged up 1.3% in April compared to last year, indicating a market slowly recovering.

What This Means for Tesla

Tesla’s deep sales slump in Europe suggests the company is losing its grip on a critical market. The growing backlash against Elon Musk’s political stances, combined with stiff competition and production challenges, is driving customers toward other brands.

While the European electric car market continues to expand, Tesla’s struggle shows that even a market leader can face significant hurdles when public opinion shifts and competitors innovate.

Tesla Faces Sharp Decline in European Sales Amid Growing Competition and Backlash Against Elon Musk

Tesla is seeing a significant drop in sales across Europe, even as the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) continues to rise. Sales figures for April paint a concerning picture for the electric car giant, with major markets like the UK, Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal, Sweden, and France all reporting sharp declines.

Sales Plunge Across Key European Markets

In the UK, one of Tesla’s previously strongholds, sales plummeted by 62% in April, according to the UK’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This comes despite a broader 8% increase in overall EV sales in the country. Tesla’s struggles in Europe are not isolated to the UK. The company also saw a staggering 67% drop in sales in Denmark, a 74% fall in the Netherlands, and a 33% decline in Portugal, based on trade group data from these countries. Sweden and France weren’t spared either, with sales down 81% and 59% respectively.

Elon Musk’s Controversial Politics and Impact on Sales

While Tesla hasn’t provided official comments on these drops, some analysts point to Elon Musk’s controversial political stances as a contributing factor. Musk has openly supported far-right political candidates in Germany and the UK, which has sparked protests and backlash across Europe. Additionally, the threat of steep tariffs on European imports, particularly due to Musk’s ties to the Trump administration, could be turning off some European buyers.

Rising Competition in the EV Market

Tesla’s sales dip also comes as competition in the European EV market intensifies. Chinese automaker BYD is rapidly gaining ground and is expected to surpass Tesla as the world’s largest EV maker this year. With new and competitive electric vehicles entering the market, Tesla is finding it harder to maintain its once-dominant position.

A Bleak Forecast for Tesla in 2025?

Analysts are already forecasting a challenging year ahead for Tesla. Despite no official guidance on 2025 sales, the company’s recent performance has many predicting a continued slide. Gordon Johnson, an analyst with GLJ Research, who has been bearish on Tesla’s prospects, expressed concern over the company’s future. “The second quarter of 2025 is shaping up to be another disaster, following the first quarter’s poor performance,” Johnson warned.

A 36% Sales Drop Across Europe

Tesla’s struggles are reflected in broader market trends. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), Tesla’s sales in Europe dropped by 36% in the first quarter of 2025. This comes despite a 24% increase in overall EV sales across the continent. The data paints a stark contrast to the growth seen in the broader electric vehicle market, highlighting Tesla’s struggles to maintain its leadership.

Tesla’s Biggest Sales Decline in History

These challenges come on the heels of Tesla’s first drop in annual sales for 2024, as well as the largest quarterly global sales decline in the company’s history. In the first quarter of 2025, Tesla’s net income fell by a staggering 71%, with the company relying on the sale of regulatory credits to legacy automakers just to report any profit.

As competition heats up and consumer confidence wanes in Europe, Tesla’s future in the global electric vehicle market is uncertain. The road ahead could be difficult, and how the company responds to these mounting challenges will shape its future prospects.

Tesla is facing a significant challenge as its sales dropped 13% in the first quarter of 2025, signaling a tough road ahead for Elon Musk’s electric vehicle giant. This marks another indication that the once high-flying company is struggling to capture the attention of buyers in an increasingly competitive market.

The company reported global deliveries of 336,681 vehicles in the first quarter, down from 387,000 during the same period last year. Despite offering steep discounts, zero financing, and other incentives, Tesla couldn’t escape the impact of growing competition and an aging lineup. Many consumers appear to be holding off on purchasing the popular Model Y, likely waiting for an updated version, while others are being swayed by improved models from competitors, especially China’s BYD.

Tesla’s once-dominant position in the electric vehicle (EV) market is being challenged by newer, more affordable EV options. This shift has taken a toll, particularly in Europe, where Tesla’s sales declines have been steeper.

A growing backlash against Elon Musk’s political involvement has also played a role in Tesla’s struggles. Musk’s embrace of right-wing politics and his position in the Trump administration have sparked protests at Tesla showrooms across the U.S. and Europe. In fact, several Tesla vehicles have been vandalized or set on fire, while protests featuring slogans like “I bought this before Elon went crazy” have become more common.

The tension around Musk’s political stances is not only hurting Tesla’s public image but also affecting its bottom line. Wall Street analyst Dan Ives from Wedbush described the first-quarter sales results as a “disaster on every metric,” noting that the brand’s crisis is clearly having a negative impact.

Tesla’s stock has taken a hit, plunging roughly 50% since December when it hit a record high. The drop came as expectations of regulatory relief under the Trump administration evaporated, replaced by concerns that the backlash against Musk’s political views and actions would seriously harm the company.

Investors have voiced frustration over Musk’s dual roles, with many claiming that his work in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is distracting him from the crucial task of leading Tesla. This week, New York City’s comptroller, responsible for overseeing pension funds that hold Tesla stock, called for a lawsuit against Musk, accusing him of “driving Tesla off a financial cliff.”

Interestingly, Tesla stock saw a rebound of more than 5% after reports that Musk might refocus on his Tesla responsibilities. Politico even cited sources suggesting that Musk could step down from his role at DOGE in the coming weeks, further boosting investor optimism.

Tesla’s challenges have been particularly pronounced in Europe. Many European customers, especially in Germany, have been put off by Musk’s public support for far-right political parties and his controversial behavior during a Trump inauguration rally. Tesla’s sales in Europe have suffered as a result, with some consumers choosing to turn to other brands that don’t carry the same political baggage.

Tesla continues to face pressure as it works to maintain its leadership in the EV market. Analysts are forecasting that Tesla’s first-quarter earnings will see a modest 7% year-over-year increase, but the overall picture remains bleak. Tesla is expected to report earnings of 48 cents per share later this month, but the company’s ability to sustain long-term growth amid fierce competition is uncertain.

Tesla’s sales for the quarter were dominated by its more affordable Model 3 and Model Y, with fewer than 13,000 of its pricier models, including the Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck, sold in that period.

As the electric vehicle market grows, Tesla must overcome a series of challenges, from political controversies and internal leadership struggles to fierce competition and an aging lineup of vehicles. The question remains: Can Tesla rebound and recapture the momentum that made it a household name, or will the company struggle to keep pace with a rapidly evolving market? Investors and consumers alike will be watching closely in the coming months as the company works through its challenges.
