ESPN has launched an ambitious, year-long programming and marketing effort designed to turn the Super Bowl into a sustained, cross-platform experience rather than a single-day broadcast event. The initiative, branded “Year of the Super Bowl,” marks the first time the sports network will serve as a rights holder for the NFL’s championship game.

The campaign began immediately after the most recent Super Bowl and will continue through February 14, 2027, when SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles hosts the title game for the second time. ESPN, alongside ABC and other Disney-owned outlets, plans to integrate the Super Bowl theme across television, digital platforms, audio programming, and promotional content throughout the year.

The strategy reflects both the significance of the event for ESPN and the broader Walt Disney Company’s ability to align multiple media and entertainment brands around a single sports property.

“We’re the first 24/7 sports network to ever be a rights holder to broadcast the Super Bowl. We see that not only as an opportunity, but we see it as a responsibility,” said Andy Tennant, ESPN’s vice president of Super Bowl planning.

Coordinated launch across platforms

The campaign began with a coordinated broadcast moment titled “The Handoff.” Veteran broadcaster Chris Berman anchored coverage from Super Bowl 60 in Santa Clara, California, before passing to Scott Van Pelt, who delivered a 90-minute postgame program from SoFi Stadium, the venue for the 2027 championship.

This symbolic transition linked the conclusion of the most recent Super Bowl to the start of ESPN’s long lead-up to its own broadcast of the event.

Across ESPN, ABC, and Disney networks, viewers have also seen a 60-second promotional spot titled “We’re Going,” featuring a mix of Disney characters and well-known ESPN and ABC personalities. The advertisement signals how the company intends to blend sports storytelling with its broader entertainment identity over the coming year.

Original series and storytelling projects

Several content projects are already underway as part of the campaign. One series, “I Scored a Touchdown,” profiles 61 players who have scored in past Super Bowls. The series debuted with New York Giants wide receiver David Tyree, whose helmet catch in Super Bowl XLII remains one of the game’s most remembered moments.

ESPN has also launched a podcast titled “The Biggest Game,” hosted by Jeremy Schaap. The first episode featured Chris Berman, who has covered 44 consecutive Super Bowls. New episodes are scheduled to air weekly as the NFL offseason progresses, particularly leading into the NFL Draft in April.

Additional programming, marketing efforts, and features are expected to roll out gradually across the offseason, maintaining a steady drumbeat of Super Bowl-related content.

Disney-wide integration

ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro described the effort as a company-wide initiative that draws on Disney’s breadth of brands and platforms.

“This fan-focused initiative unites our company’s beloved brands with industry-leading storytelling and technology to showcase football’s greatest stories, heroes, and moments like never before,” Pitaro said. “Across our platforms, screens, and parks, we’ll build momentum throughout the year toward Super Bowl 61 — a monumental event for sports fans everywhere and for ESPN.”

The reference to parks reflects Disney’s intent to extend the campaign beyond traditional media, incorporating experiential and promotional elements across its theme park operations and consumer spaces.

Extending the Super Bowl’s media lifecycle

For decades, the Super Bowl has stood as a singular media event, commanding global attention for one evening each February. ESPN’s approach signals an effort to stretch that attention across months of storytelling, nostalgia, and build-up content.

The network’s 24-hour sports format allows for deeper archival features, athlete profiles, and historical retrospectives that can be revisited repeatedly without exhausting audience interest. By spacing out content across television, streaming, audio, and social platforms, ESPN aims to keep the Super Bowl narrative active throughout the NFL calendar.

This approach also aligns with broader trends in sports media, where major events now generate extended coverage cycles that begin immediately after the previous edition concludes.

Preparing for a milestone broadcast

The 2027 game in Los Angeles represents a milestone for ESPN, which has long covered the NFL but never previously held the rights to broadcast the Super Bowl. Internally, executives and long-serving staff view the moment as a culmination of decades of sports coverage.

Tennant noted that many employees have spent their careers at ESPN without the opportunity to work on a Super Bowl broadcast, underscoring the internal significance of the event.

The year-long strategy serves not only as audience engagement but also as preparation for a broadcast that carries both symbolic and commercial importance for the network.

As the NFL season moves through its offseason milestones — free agency, the draft, training camps, and the regular season — ESPN plans to tie each moment back to the approaching championship in Los Angeles.

US Officially Renames Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” by Trump’s Order

The Gulf of Mexico is no more—at least in the United States. The federal Board on Geographic Names has officially renamed it the Gulf of America following one of President Donald Trump’s first executive orders.

What the Name Change Means

The change applies only to the U.S., meaning other countries can continue using “Gulf of Mexico.”

Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, has rejected the change and urged others to ignore it.

International naming practices typically defer to the country in control of a geographic feature, but the Gulf is shared by Mexico, the U.S., Cuba, and several other nations.

Trump Declares “Gulf of America Day”

On Super Bowl Sunday, President Trump flew over the Gulf on Air Force One and proclaimed the day as the first-ever “Gulf of America Day.“ Traveling with him, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum shared a new USGS (United States Geological Survey) map on social media reflecting the updated name.

Government & Tech Companies Respond

Some U.S. agencies immediately adopted the name following Trump’s Jan. 20 order.

The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) now recognizes “Gulf of America” as the official name across all federal government entities.

Google Maps has already updated the name.

Apple has not yet made the change and declined to comment when asked about it.

Mexico’s Response: A Name Change for the U.S.?

In a lighthearted response, Mexico’s President joked that she might start calling the U.S. “Mexican America” in retaliation.

Historical Precedents for Name Disputes

This isn’t the first time a geographic name has been contested:

The Falkland Islands—claimed by both Britain and Argentina—are called “Islas Malvinas” by Argentina. This dispute led to the 1982 Falklands War.

Denali vs. Mount McKinley—Trump has also reversed the renaming of North America’s tallest mountain, reinstating its federal name as Mount McKinley. President Barack Obama had officially changed it to Denali in 2015, aligning with Alaskan officials who had used the name for years.

Trump’s Justification for the McKinley Name Reinstatement

Trump called Obama’s decision “an affront to President McKinley’s life, achievements, and sacrifice.“ He emphasized McKinley’s historical role in:

Tariffs, which align with Trump’s economic policies.

Territorial expansion, as McKinley’s presidency saw the U.S. acquire Puerto Rico, Guam, the Philippines, and Hawaii.

Trump’s Vision for U.S. Expansion

Trump has previously suggested:

Annexing Greenland.

Making Canada the 51st state.

Retaking the Panama Canal through military action.

Despite the mountain’s renaming, Denali National Park and Preserve will keep its existing name.

Conclusion

While the U.S. government now officially recognizes “Gulf of America,“ the international community’s reaction remains mixed. Mexico and other nations continue to use “Gulf of Mexico,” highlighting yet another diplomatic controversy sparked by Trump’s administration.

Mahomes, Kelce, and the Chiefs’ Quest for a Historic Three-Peat Faces Tough Test Against Eagles

Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the Kansas City Chiefs are chasing history—and perhaps a few of Taylor Swift’s records—as they pursue their third straight Super Bowl victory. But standing in their way are Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts, and the formidable Philadelphia Eagles.

The Chiefs (17-2) are set to face the Eagles (17-3) on Sunday in the Superdome, hoping to make history by becoming the first team to secure three consecutive Super Bowl wins. This matchup is a rematch of the 2023 Super Bowl, when Hurts nearly led the Eagles to victory but saw Mahomes rally the Chiefs to a 38-35 win with a clutch 27-yard field goal by Harrison Butker in the final seconds.

Chiefs’ Road to a Three-Peat

Mahomes and Kelce, who have become the faces of Kansas City’s dynasty, are looking to build on the team’s previous successes. Mahomes led the Chiefs to an overtime win against San Francisco in last year’s Super Bowl, cementing his legacy. Now, they’re gunning for the elusive three-peat, although Chiefs coach Andy Reid doesn’t often mention the idea of a three-peat.

“I think the only time I’ve heard him say it is when y’all ask him about it,” Mahomes said, adding that Reid stays focused on the task at hand—preparing for the Eagles.

Reid, who previously coached in Philadelphia, has already built a Super Bowl-winning dynasty in Kansas City with Mahomes, Kelce, and standout players like Chris Jones. Despite the potential to make history, Reid emphasizes staying focused on the upcoming game.

“We don’t talk about no three-peat,” Jones said. “Our main focus is making sure we’re prepared for the Eagles.”

Eagles’ Revenge and a New Challenge

The Eagles are determined to avenge their loss two years ago and are an even stronger team this time around. With MVP candidate Jalen Hurts at the helm and Saquon Barkley leading the backfield, the Eagles’ offense presents a formidable challenge for the Chiefs’ defense. Barkley rushed for 2,447 yards with seven touchdowns of 60+ yards this season, and Hurts is more motivated than ever after falling short in 2023.

“It lit a flame, lit a fire in me, and to have this opportunity again is exactly what you work for,” Hurts said of his previous Super Bowl loss.

The Eagles’ offense, bolstered by A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and a dominant offensive line, is one of the most potent in the league. They also boast the league’s No. 1-ranked defense, led by defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. The defense has been significantly revamped since last year, with new starters like All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun, rookie cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, and defensive stars like Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith.

The Chiefs’ Defense vs. Eagles’ Dynamic Offense

Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo knows that facing the Eagles’ top-ranked defense will be no easy task, but he believes in his team’s ability to rise to the occasion.

“We’re fortunate to have Steve Spagnuolo, but I tell you that Vic [Fangio] is one of those guys,” Reid said. “He’s been time-tested, and he has the trust of his players.”

If the Chiefs win, Reid and Mahomes will inch closer to matching the legacy of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, who won six Super Bowls together in New England. Mahomes is still four rings away from Brady’s all-time record of seven.

“I’m trying to be the greatest Patrick Mahomes that I can be,” Mahomes said. “To be the greatest, you have to be the greatest every single day.”

Kelce, Swift, and the Super Bowl Rings

For Kelce, a third Super Bowl win would give him his fourth ring, matching the number of Grammy Awards his pop star girlfriend, Taylor Swift, has won for Best Album. Kelce has 18 playoff wins to his name, while Swift has 14 Grammys.

“She’s up there being the superstar that she is and never taking no for an answer,” Kelce said. “I better match that energy for sure.”

As the Chiefs chase history and the Eagles seek redemption, this Super Bowl promises to be one of the most thrilling matchups yet.

It was the Bucs’ franchise QB trying to set the tone as running back Bucky Irving took the handoff for a 31-yard gain. Mayfield would find tight end Cade Otton five plays later for an 8-yard touchdown.
On the play where he got hurt, Mayfield spun and ducked his way out of would-be sacks by cornerback Alontae Taylor, but he fell on his stomach after his foot was caught behind by defensive end Carl Granderson.
The NFL’s touchdown leader through the first six weeks of the season may have gotten the wind knocked out of him on that play, but he bounced back just like Tampa has all season — through injuries, losses and adversity.
Now, the Bucs (4-2) are set for a big test on “Monday Night Football” (8:15 p.m. ET, ABC/ESPN/ESPN+) when they host the Baltimore Ravens (4-2), but thus far, their calling cards have been their multiplicity on offense with coordinator Liam Coen’s constant motions and shifts, plus aggression on defense with coach Todd Bowles’ elaborate blitz packages.
On a deeper level, their identity has been their “resiliency,” according to Bowles.
While he joked Thursday about Mayfield sounding like Rocky Balboa after the QB was described as showing “tenacity” and “grit” as a scrambler, the notion was spot on. Mayfield averages 6.5 yards per carry when leaving the pocket, fifth most in the league among quarterbacks with 20 or more rushes coming into Week 7.
As a whole, Mayfield leads a group that has shown it’s been pretty tough to rattle, and the team embodies the scrappiness of their QB and the heart of their coach.
Two major hurricanes affected the Tampa Bay region in a span of 14 days, with the second one forcing a teamwide evacuation that sent 300 members of the organization and their families with 30 pets to New Orleans. Receiver Mike Evans said the Bucs were playing for something “bigger,” and, in a week where they had to practice at Tulane University, they were able to come away with a 51-27 win over the Saints.
“It was kind of weird,” left tackle Tristan Wirfs said. “I mean we found out on like Sunday night or Monday, like, ‘Yeah, we’re leaving Tuesday.’ We’re like, ‘What do you mean?’ So just that quick turnaround, like, ‘Pack your stuff up, pack your families up. We’re going.'”
WHETHER OR NOT that evacuation set the tone for a chaotic second quarter is up for debate — as some Bucs players say the Saints were provoking them — it certainly didn’t help their circumstances in a crucial game where falling to 0-2 in the NFC South would be less than ideal.
“I mean, it’s sudden change. That’s part of football, that’s part of life,” Bowles said. “Things are going to happen to you daily that you’re going to have to make adjustments to, and you’re going to have to keep your composure when you’re doing them.”
After jumping out to a 17-0 lead, things unraveled quickly. Mayfield threw three interceptions — two were tipped — and Rashid Shaheed returned a Jake Camarda punt 54 yards for a touchdown. The Bucs also racked up seven penalties in those 15 minutes, as chants of “Who dat! Who dat!” engulfed the Caesars Superdome as they headed to the locker room down 27-24.
“[Bowles] basically told us, ‘Just keep your composure. They can’t beat us,'” defensive back Tavierre Thomas said.
Mayfield added, “It comes down to guys being able to hit the reset button, knowing it’s a tight game and saying, ‘Hey, if we just do our job, we’re going to be all right.’ Having that mindset of ‘one play at a time.'”
Bowles’ demeanor resonated with his coaching staff and players, and he made technical adjustments to squeeze the pocket so quarterback Spencer Rattler could no longer escape on bootlegs.
They stopped dropping their outside linebackers into coverage. And they started running the ball more while continuing to rely on their screen game.
“I mean if you see our coach on the sideline, he’s pretty much the same the whole game,” Irving said. “It is always great to have a coach that stays calm and collected during them times.”
Cornerback Zyon McCollum, who missed a tackle on KhaDarel Hodge‘s game-winning 45-yard touchdown in overtime against the Falcons in Week 5, notched a crucial interception in the fourth quarter. Bowles had supported McCollum after the Atlanta loss, saying he played it correctly, going for the ball despite missing the tackle. His uplifting cool carried over.
“It’s everything,” McCollum said of that support. “If I don’t have my confidence, if I’m not playing confident, I’m a completely different player.”
IT’S WITH THAT same steadiness and resilience that the Bucs have managed to pull off major wins against the Washington Commanders, Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles this season, despite not being at full strength for any one of those games.
Against Washington, they were forced to rely on backup safety/nickelback Christian Izien as an outside cornerback after McCollum, Bryce Hall and Josh Hayes all exited the game with injuries. The last time Izien played outside cornerback? His sophomore year of high school. He then spent the next four games subbing for All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (foot).
They were also without starting right tackle Luke Goedeke for four games after he suffered a concussion in Week 1, with Mayfield taking five sacks against the Lions but coming away with a 20-16 win. By that game’s end, they were without defensive tackle Vita Vea, who suffered a sprained MCL, in addition to defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, their 2023 first-round draft pick, who had missed five games with a calf injury. They had to rely on backup Greg Gaines and practice squad callup C.J. Brewer.
They’ve gotten unexpected contributions from defensive lineman Logan Hall, who sacked Kirk Cousins twice in Week 5 and has three sacks this season after missing the opener with a foot injury.
Sean Tucker, their third-string running back whose career was stifled by a heart condition discovered at the NFL combine in 2023, had a career day against the Saints — rushing for 136 yards and a touchdown and adding 56 receiving yards and another score in his first extended action with Rachaad White out because of a foot injury.
His counterpart, Irving, a 2024 fourth-round draft pick, currently leads the team with 328 rushing yards and is averaging 5.7 yards per carry.
“You’ve got to adjust. You have to adjust,” Bowles said of injuries. “And guys make the team for a reason. You’ve got to know why they’ve made your team and put them in position to make plays. Everybody’s dealing with that and everybody’s adjusting differently. We like where we are right now.”
Bowles’ defense will be tested by the Ravens, who lead the league with 453.7 yards per game. Baltimore is the only team to score more touchdowns than the Bucs (20) on offense at 21, and Jackson has been the catalyst as he continues to make a case to repeat as the NFL’s MVP.
“First, you’ve got to pray,” pass game coordinator/inside linebackers coach Larry Foote said. “You’ve just got to pray. You’ve got to hope and you’ve got to wish. It’s going to take a group effort — even the [safeties]. Everybody is going to have to be responsible for him. At the end of the day, when he drops back and decides to run, it’s going to be a challenge. When he does get tackled, it’s a shoestring tackle — that’s when the prayers are going to be needed.”
If the Bucs can escape with a win, they would be 5-2 heading into a rematch with the Falcons (4-3) in Week 8 and a chance for redemption with first place in the division on the line.
