Michael Bolton is facing one of the toughest challenges of his life — and he’s opening up with honesty and resilience.

The 72-year-old Grammy-winning singer revealed in a recent People interview that he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive and incurable form of brain cancer, in late 2023. The diagnosis followed emergency surgery to remove a brain tumor in December. Just a month later, Bolton had to undergo a second brain surgery due to an infection.

Despite the difficult journey, Bolton has continued to fight with determination and optimism. He completed both chemotherapy and radiation treatments in October 2024 and now undergoes regular MRIs every two months to monitor for any recurrence.

“Succumbing to the challenge is not an option,” Bolton said. “You’re really quickly drawn into a duel. I guess that’s the way you find out what you’re made of.”

According to the Cleveland Clinic, glioblastoma is the most common malignant brain tumor in adults and grows rapidly, though it rarely spreads beyond the brain and spinal cord. The prognosis is often grim — without treatment, life expectancy can be less than six months. Still, treatments can help slow the progression and manage symptoms.

Bolton admitted the physical and emotional toll has been significant. He’s experienced challenges with short-term memory, speech, and mobility, but he hasn’t let it define him. Instead, he’s focused on recovery and maintaining strength — with the help of a personal trainer and voice therapist.

More than anything, the singer finds strength in his support system.

“Just to know that you’re not alone going through it is a big deal,” he said. “It actually helps people to know. It reminds them that they’re not alone.”

Bolton’s family has been by his side throughout his battle, and he’s using this time to deepen those relationships, especially with his children. He’s more reflective than ever about the legacy he wants to leave behind.

“How do I give things that they can take forward? Life lessons, love, any kind of validation — I want to be on the right side of that so they feel great about who they are,” he shared.

Rather than focus on the odds or statistics, Bolton is choosing to live in the moment and remain hopeful.

“It’s unthinkable for it to be okay not to make the most of your life,” he said. “You have to be a cheerleader for yourself.”

His daughter, Taryn Bolton, echoed that sentiment:

“We’re in this together, and that’s it.”

As he continues his journey, Bolton hopes his openness helps others facing similar battles feel less alone — and more empowered to keep fighting.

Ryan Kobayashi, a 58-year-old man from Oregon, was found dead in Los Angeles on Sunday, Nov. 24, after spending several days searching for his missing daughter, 30-year-old Hannah Kobayashi. His family believes his death may have been a suicide triggered by overwhelming grief and mental health struggles.

“He died of a broken heart,” says Larie Pidgeon, 45, Ryan’s former sister-in-law and Hannah’s aunt.

Hannah Kobayashi went missing earlier this month after missing her connecting flight at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and sending alarming texts to loved ones. Since then, Ryan had joined family members in a desperate search for his daughter, including visiting areas like Skid Row, where he feared she might have ended up.

Pidgeon believes that as the search stretched on, Ryan’s emotional and mental health deteriorated. “We really want everyone to know that he fought so hard,” she said. “Imagine if it was your daughter.”

At around 4 a.m. on Sunday, Los Angeles police responded to a call from a parking lot near LAX where Ryan’s body was found. Authorities are investigating the death as an apparent suicide, but the cause has not been officially determined. The L.A. County Medical Examiner has scheduled an examination.

The family confirms that the parking lot where Ryan was found is near the hotel where they had been staying while searching for Hannah.

Pidgeon fondly remembers Ryan as “one of the kindest, most sensitive souls” she had ever known. “He was just so good,” she said, describing him as a “teddy bear.” She emphasized that Ryan had been deeply grateful for the support they received during the search for Hannah.

The family wants to clarify that there is no suspicion surrounding Ryan’s involvement in his daughter’s disappearance. “He wanted to do everything he could,” Pidgeon said. “He showed up when it mattered the most.”

Despite their devastating loss, the family is continuing the search for Hannah. “We are holding onto hope and turning to our community for help,” the family wrote in a message on a Facebook page dedicated to finding Hannah. “The search for our beloved Hannah must continue with the same love and determination that Ryan would have wanted. We need your help, we need your strength.”

Pidgeon added, “We’re still here. We’re a family doing the best we can now with two tragedies. So please be kind.”

In an exclusive interview, Dave Coulier, best known as Joey from Full House, shared that he’s been diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a rare and aggressive cancer that affects white blood cells. Coulier, 65, learned of the diagnosis in October after an upper respiratory infection caused significant swelling in his lymph nodes.

The journey began with a swollen lymph node that grew to the size of a golf ball. Following advice from his doctor, Coulier underwent PET and CT scans and a biopsy. Within days, he received life-changing news: “I went from having a head cold to being told I have cancer. It was overwhelming, like a fast roller coaster ride,” Coulier recalled.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, according to the Mayo Clinic, causes abnormal growth of white blood cells, forming tumors throughout the body. Coulier’s specific type, B cell lymphoma, is rare and can affect the skin. With the diagnosis, Coulier and his wife Melissa, supported by friends in the medical field, immediately planned his treatment.

Positive Prognosis and Treatment Journey A hopeful moment came early when a bone marrow test returned negative, giving Coulier a 90% chance of cure. He started chemotherapy just two weeks after his diagnosis and shaved his head as a “preemptive strike.” Coulier opened up about his experience on his podcast Full House Rewind, saying, “I’m meeting this head-on and want to inspire others by sharing my journey.”

Determined to maintain a positive outlook for his family, including his wife Melissa and his son Luc, who is expecting his first child, Coulier draws strength from memories of family members who also battled cancer. “My mother, sister, and niece all faced cancer. I thought if I could be just a fraction as strong as they were, I’d be fine,” he reflected.

Support from Family and Humor to Stay Strong Coulier’s older sister Karen, also fighting cancer, has been a source of strength and humor throughout his journey. He shared light-hearted moments that have helped keep his spirits up, joking, “I’ve gone from a Virgo to a Cancer in weeks,” and referencing his love of hockey: “When they said I have NHL, I thought, ‘Finally made it to the NHL!’”

This blend of humor and resilience has helped Coulier stay calm. “When I first got the news, I was stunned, but an inner calm set in, perhaps inspired by the women in my family. They were magnificent in their battles, and they instilled that calm and strength in me,” he explained. “It’s been an incredible life with incredible people around me, and I’m at peace.”

Taking it Day by Day and Looking to the Future With one of six chemo treatments already completed, Coulier is navigating the ups and downs, from nausea and dizziness to days of renewed energy thanks to steroids. Recently, he took to the ice with friends in Detroit, a moment that reminded him of the joy in life. He’s also looking forward to becoming a grandpa, sharing, “I’ve got to teach him how to play hockey. There’s so much to look forward to.”

Coulier hopes his story will encourage others to prioritize their health. “Take care of yourself. Talk to your doctors, get screenings. It can make a huge difference in your life,” he advised.
