George Wendt, Beloved as Norm on ‘Cheers’ and Broadway Mainstay, Dies at 76

George Wendt, best known for playing the lovable barfly Norm Peterson on the classic sitcom Cheers, has passed away at the age of 76. According to a statement from his family, the actor died peacefully in his sleep at home early Tuesday morning.

“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him,” the family shared. “He will be missed forever.” They have requested privacy during this difficult time.

An Unforgettable Norm

Wendt’s portrayal of Norm — the endearing, beer-loving regular at a Boston bar where everybody knows your name — made him a television icon throughout the 1980s and early ‘90s. The role earned him six consecutive Emmy nominations for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy from 1984 to 1989. His entrance into the bar was always met with a chorus of “Norm!” from fellow patrons, and his one-liners were a hallmark of the show’s wit.

When the Cheers pilot was being cast, Wendt didn’t expect much. His audition was originally for a one-word role: “Beer.” But producers saw something more, and offered him the role of a man who never left the bar. The rest was sitcom history.

From Second City to TV Stardom

Before he became Norm, Wendt honed his comedic chops with Chicago’s legendary Second City improv troupe. That experience shaped his grounded, everyman approach to comedy — never too flashy, always relatable.

Cheers debuted on NBC in 1982 to modest ratings but gained traction thanks to critical support and word-of-mouth. By the time the series wrapped in 1993, nearly 80 million viewers tuned in for the finale. Wendt and the cast marked the occasion with a boozy celebration and a live appearance on The Tonight Show from the Boston bar that inspired the series.

“We had been drinking heavily for two hours but nobody thought to feed us,” Wendt recalled in 2009. “We were nowhere near as cute as we thought we were.”

Rhea Perlman, who played Carla, shared a heartfelt tribute: “George was the sweetest, kindest man I ever met. I’ll miss him more than words can say.”

Beyond Cheers: Stage, Santa, and the Second Act

While TV made Wendt a household name, the stage became his artistic home later in life. He starred in major productions like Art, Hairspray, Elf, and 12 Angry Men, and took on iconic roles in regional theater, including Death of a Salesman and The Odd Couple.

In true character actor fashion, Wendt also embraced playing Santa Claus — appearing in the Broadway musical Elf, the TV movie Santa Baby with Jenny McCarthy, and even Disney’s Santa Buddies. He joked, “If you stay fat enough and get old enough, the offers start rolling in.”

Wendt’s Comedy Philosophy

Wendt saw himself not as a showboater but as a team player — the kind of comedian who let the humor flow naturally. “My approach to comedy is usually not full-bore clownish,” he once said. “If you’re trying to showboat or step outside, it doesn’t always work.”

That understated charm defined his work, whether he was on the Cheers set, performing Mamet, or even appearing on The Masked Singer in 2023.

A Life Poured in Beer and Laughter

A lifelong beer enthusiast, Wendt turned his passion into a book: Drinking With George: A Barstool Professional’s Guide to Beer. It was part memoir, part beer-lover’s manual, and all George — complete with lists like “Five Good Bar Bets” and “(More Than) 100 Ways to Say That You’re Drunk.”

“Will Rogers once said he never met a man he didn’t like. I feel the same about beer,” he wrote.

Remembering a Comedy Legend

George Wendt is survived by his wife, Bernadette Birkett — a fellow Second City alum who voiced his character’s unseen wife Vera on Cheers — as well as his children Hilary, Joe, and Daniel, and stepchildren Joshua and Andrew.

The National Comedy Center’s Journey Gunderson summed up Wendt’s legacy: “From his early days with The Second City to his iconic role as Norm on Cheers, George Wendt’s work showcased how comedy can create indelible characters that feel like family.”

And for millions of fans, Norm was exactly that — family.

Tony Roberts, Stage and Film Actor Known for Woody Allen Films, Dies at 85

Tony Roberts, a talented stage actor and film star who was best known for his roles in Woody Allen movies, has passed away at 85. His death was confirmed by his daughter, Nicole Burley, in a statement to The New York Times.

A Versatile Stage and Screen Talent

Roberts, who was nominated for a Tony Award, enjoyed a long and successful career in both theater and film. He was widely appreciated for his genial stage presence, which made him a perfect fit for musical comedies. Some of his most notable Broadway roles included starring in musicals like “How Now, Dow Jones” (1967), “Sugar” (1972) (an adaptation of the classic movie Some Like It Hot), and “Victor/Victoria” (1995), in which he shared the stage with Julie Andrews. He also appeared in the campy roller-disco musical “Xanadu” (2007) and “The Royal Family” (2009).

In his memoir “Do You Know Me?” Roberts reflected on his career, saying, “I’ve never been particularly lucky at card games. I’ve never hit a jackpot. But I have been extremely lucky in life.” He went on to share how he had always known he wanted to be an actor, even before high school.

Hollywood and Woody Allen Films

Roberts was a familiar face in many of Woody Allen’s films, often playing Allen’s best friend or a charming supporting role. He first collaborated with Allen on Broadway in the 1966 comedy “Don’t Drink the Water” and later reprised his role in the film adaptation. He also starred in “Play It Again, Sam“ (1969) on Broadway, which was also made into a movie.

Other memorable roles in Allen films included appearances in “Annie Hall” (1977), “Stardust Memories” (1980), “A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy” (1982), “Hannah and Her Sisters” (1986), and “Radio Days” (1987). His performances were often the perfect foil to Allen’s neurotic characters, and his tall frame and broad shoulders made him a striking presence onscreen. In “A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy”, Roberts recalled the challenges of filming a complicated scene that Allen insisted on repeating for perfection.

Roberts once remarked, “When you go back to see [Allen’s work] two, three, four times, you begin to see the amazing amount of art in it, that nothing is accidental.”

Tony Award Nominations and Broadway Success

Roberts earned two Tony Award nominations, first for his role in “How Now, Dow Jones” and again for “Play It Again, Sam”, where he was billed as Anthony Roberts. He also found great success with “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife” (2000), playing the husband in this Charles Busch comedy, which became one of his most beloved Broadway roles.

His Broadway career spanned decades, and he appeared in iconic productions like “Barefoot in the Park”, “Promises, Promises”, “They’re Playing Our Song”, “Jerome Robbins’ Broadway”, “The Sisters Rosensweig”, and the 1998 revival of “Cabaret” by the Roundabout Theatre Company. Roberts was proud to have performed during the final years of what he considered Broadway’s Golden Age. He once told Broadway World, “In that era, there was a lot more going on that seemed to have high quality about it and great conviction.”

A Lifelong Actor

Born in New York City on October 22, 1939, Roberts was the son of radio and television announcer Ken Roberts. Surrounded by actors growing up—his cousin was actor Everett Sloane—Roberts was immersed in the world of performance from an early age. He attended the High School of Music and Art in New York and later graduated from Northwestern University.

Though Roberts’ marriage to Jennifer Lyons ended in divorce, he is survived by his daughter, actor Nicole Burley.

Final Days and Lasting Legacy

Roberts’ work extended beyond Broadway and film. He had a recurring role in the short-lived TV series “The Four Seasons” (1984) and appeared in other popular shows like “Murder, She Wrote” and “Law & Order”. His career was a testament to his versatility and enduring appeal, whether he was making audiences laugh on Broadway or playing off Woody Allen’s signature neuroses in the films.

In a memorable anecdote, Roberts once recalled his first meeting with Allen. After initially being turned down for an audition for Allen’s first Broadway play, “Don’t Drink the Water”, Roberts’ performance in “Barefoot in the Park” convinced Allen to cast him, with Allen famously saying, “You were great. How come you’re such a lousy auditioner?”

Tony Roberts leaves behind a rich legacy of theater and film performances, forever remembered for his humor, charm, and ability to light up the stage and screen.

One Tree Hill’ Star Paul Teal Dies at 35 After Cancer Battle: Tributes Pour In

Paul Teal, the actor best known for his role on One Tree Hill, has passed away at the age of 35 following a courageous battle with cancer. His fiancée and costars are mourning his loss and remembering the impact he had on their lives.

In a heartfelt Instagram post on Sunday, November 17, Paul’s fiancée, Emilia Torello, shared a photo of them together and wrote, “The most thoughtful, inspiring, driven, self-disciplined, loving man passed away on Friday, November 15, 2024.” She described Paul as her “soulmate, my soon-to-be-husband, my rock, and my future,” expressing her deep sorrow at his untimely death. “You filled my lungs with laughter, my stomach with butterflies, and my heart with love. You were taken too soon, in a battle that you fought bravely without fail.” Emilia promised to “fight to find joy in life as hard as you fought to live every single day.”

Paul joined One Tree Hill during its seventh season in 2010, playing the role of closeted actor Josh Avery. His character dated Jana Kramer’s Alex Dupre before coming out as gay. Bethany Joy Lenz, who worked alongside Paul in a 2006 stage production of The Notebook prior to his joining the show, also directed him in an episode of the CW series.

“My heart is heavy,” Joy, 43, wrote in an emotional tribute on Instagram. “Paul Teal was the kind of guy who lit up a room without trying. His bright smile, infectious laugh, and kind heart made you want to be near him.” Joy shared memories of their time together, saying, “We stayed in touch on and off. I wish it had been more. I wish I’d called all those times I meant to but got distracted. Life is short. I keep thinking that this week. Life is short.” She posted a video featuring photos of Paul as Noah Calhoun in The Notebook, accompanied by the song “Sunday Train,” which Paul sang during the production. “Now at 35, he’s taken another train. He was too young to die. Far too young. I’m gutted. I’ll miss you, Paul. Thank you for sharing your light with us.”

Sophia Bush also expressed her sadness on her Instagram Stories on Monday, November 18. “Incredibly saddened to hear about the passing of Paul Teal,” she wrote over an article about his death. The Chicago P.D. alum, 42, noted how she and Joy are “just starting to watch” Paul’s One Tree Hill episodes on their “Drama Queens” podcast, saying, “he’s such a talent.” Sophia also shared another Story with a link to a Meal Train donation page for Emilia and her family. After Paul’s diagnosis, the couple relocated to his native Wilmington, North Carolina, where One Tree Hill was filmed. The page read, “Paul Teal was a dear friend and loved by so many. He and Emilia moved back to Wilmington when they got his cancer diagnosis, and she and her family were with him for his fight over the past 8 months.” Friends and fans were able to donate money towards meals or schedule meal drop-offs to help support Emilia and her family during this difficult time. Joy generously donated a $200 gift card to the cause.

In addition to his role on One Tree Hill, Paul also appeared in three episodes of the 2022 Max miniseries The Staircase and two episodes of Outer Banks in 2021.

Paul’s legacy as a beloved friend, talented actor, and bright presence in the lives of those who knew him will not be forgotten.
