Israeli Forces Board Gaza-Bound Aid Ship Carrying Greta Thunberg, Say Activists

Contact lost with vessel as tensions rise over humanitarian mission to besieged Gaza Strip

Israeli forces have reportedly boarded a yacht attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, according to statements from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the activist group behind the mission.

The vessel, named Madleen, lost all communication while it was sailing in international waters near the Egyptian coast. “Connection has been lost,” the coalition wrote on its Telegram channel, along with a photo appearing to show passengers in life jackets, sitting on the deck with their hands raised in a posture of surrender. The authenticity of the photo has not yet been independently verified.

One of the most prominent figures reportedly aboard is Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who joined the voyage in solidarity with Palestinians and to bring attention to what activists are calling a worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

The ship is part of the Freedom Flotilla, a civil society-led initiative aiming to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza and deliver food, medicine, and other essential supplies. The coalition says the flotilla’s cargo is strictly humanitarian and includes no weapons or military materials.

Israeli Government: Blockade Necessary for Security

Earlier today, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant issued a directive to the military to stop the vessel from breaching the naval blockade, which Israel has enforced on Gaza since 2007. Israeli authorities argue the blockade is critical to prevent weapons and other supplies from reaching Hamas, the armed group that controls the Gaza Strip and is designated a terrorist organization by Israel, the U.S., and the EU.

“The Israeli Navy is acting in accordance with international law to prevent unauthorized vessels from entering the maritime security zone around Gaza,” an Israeli official said in a brief statement, without directly confirming that the Madleen had been boarded.

A High-Stakes Voyage Amid Growing Global Attention

The Freedom Flotilla’s mission comes at a time of heightened international scrutiny over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where residents have endured months of military bombardment, displacement, and restricted access to food, water, fuel, and medical care.

Greta Thunberg’s participation has brought global media attention to the voyage. Before departure, she described the mission as a “moral obligation” and criticized the international community’s failure to act decisively to alleviate the suffering of civilians in Gaza.

This isn’t the first time activists have attempted to challenge the Israeli blockade. In 2010, a similar flotilla ended in a deadly raid by Israeli forces aboard the Mavi Marmara, leaving 10 Turkish activists dead and triggering an international outcry.

What Happens Next?

As of now, there has been no official confirmation from Israel about the current status of the Madleen or the whereabouts of those on board. Human rights groups and international observers are urging transparency and restraint as the situation unfolds.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition is demanding the immediate release of the passengers and that the aid be allowed to reach its intended destination.

This is a developing story. More updates will follow as new details become available.

Bodies of Missing Aid Workers Found in Gaza ‘Mass Grave’ After Israeli Attacks

The bodies of more than a dozen aid workers have been recovered from what the United Nations has described as a “mass grave” in southern Gaza, a week after they went missing following Israeli military attacks.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) confirmed Sunday that 14 bodies were recovered from the southern Rafah area. Among them were eight PRCS members, five civil defense workers, and one UN agency employee. Another PRCS medic remains missing. Last Thursday, the body of a fifteenth victim, a civil defense worker, was also recovered after PRCS was initially denied access to the site.

On March 23, PRCS reported that nine of its emergency medical technicians had gone missing after Israeli forces fired on ambulances and fire trucks in Rafah. The Israeli military later claimed it targeted the vehicles because they were allegedly being used as cover by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants.

International aid organizations and the UN strongly condemned the attacks, with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) calling it the “single most deadly” incident for IFRC workers in nearly a decade.

“This massacre of our team is a tragedy not only for us at the Palestine Red Crescent Society but also for humanitarian work and humanity,” PRCS stated, calling the attacks on medics a “war crime” under international law.

The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said it took a week-long, complex rescue operation involving bulldozers and heavy machinery to retrieve the bodies and their vehicles from beneath the sand.

“Health workers should never be a target. And yet, we’re here today, digging up a mass grave of first responders and paramedics,” said Jonathan Whittall, head of UNOCHA in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Video footage shared by UNOCHA showed emergency responders using shovels to recover bodies, some of whom were still wearing PRCS vests. Ambulances, UN vehicles, and civil defense trucks were found crushed and buried, leading to accusations that Israeli forces attempted to cover up the scene.

UNOCHA’s early findings indicate that the first team of aid workers dispatched on March 23 was killed by Israeli forces. Additional emergency crews who later arrived to search for missing colleagues were also struck over the following hours.

“One by one, they were hit, they were struck, their bodies were gathered and buried,” Whittall said. “We’re digging them out in their uniforms, with their gloves on.”

According to PRCS, their medics were dispatched to Rafah’s Al-Hashashin area to respond to Israeli attacks when they were targeted. Gaza’s Civil Defense later reported that six of its staff also went missing after being sent to the same location.

The Israeli military claimed it fired at “suspicious vehicles,” including ambulances and fire trucks, which were allegedly advancing toward troops without prior coordination or emergency signals. The military stated that it had “eliminated” Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants and accused these groups of using medical vehicles for militant purposes.

The attacks on aid workers occurred amid Israel’s intensified assault on Gaza, following the collapse of a ceasefire with Hamas. Since March 18, Israeli military actions have killed at least 921 Palestinians and injured more than 2,000, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health. CNN has not independently verified these figures, as Israel restricts foreign journalists from entering Gaza.

The crisis has been exacerbated by Israel’s blockade of humanitarian aid, which has been in place for nearly a month. Aid organizations accuse Israel of violating international law by restricting aid and using starvation as a weapon of war.

Global humanitarian organizations continue to denounce Israeli attacks on medical personnel and facilities.

“Even in the most complex conflict zones, there are rules. International Humanitarian Law is clear—civilians must be protected; humanitarians must be protected. Health services must be protected,” said Jagan Chapagain, Secretary General of the IFRC.

Israeli forces have also been accused of targeting hospitals, including the Nasser Medical Complex, Gaza’s largest functioning hospital, which has faced bombardments and raids.

Since October 7, 2023, at least 400 aid workers—including doctors, nurses, and teachers—have been killed in Gaza, according to OCHA. PRCS reports that 27 of its staff members have died in the line of duty during the ongoing conflict.

PRCS condemned the targeting of its medics, stating, “This can only be considered a war crime punishable under international humanitarian law, which the occupation continues to violate before the eyes of the entire world.”

Meanwhile, Gaza’s health officials say the overall death toll has surpassed 50,000, underscoring the staggering humanitarian cost of a war with no resolution in sight.

Family of Slain Gazan Protester Blames Hamas for His Death

A wave of anger and defiance swept through the streets of Gaza on Saturday as mourners gathered for the funeral of 22-year-old Oday Nasser Al Rabay. The young protester was found lifeless outside his family home after allegedly being kidnapped, tortured, and executed—his relatives say—by members of Hamas.

His funeral turned into a rallying cry against Gaza’s rulers. Hundreds of mourners marched through the streets, their chants of “Hamas out!” echoing the very demonstrations Al Rabay had participated in. His murder marks the first known retaliatory killing since protests erupted last week across multiple locations in Gaza.

Hamas, the militant group that has controlled Gaza since 2007, has faced growing discontent. Protesters have taken to the streets, demanding change. But speaking out comes at a cost. A Gazan activist now exiled in Turkey, who has been sharing footage of the demonstrations online, claims he has received direct threats from senior Hamas officials.

Despite eyewitness accounts and video evidence, Hamas insists that the protests were directed at Israel, not at their own governance. Al Jazeera, a Qatari-owned media outlet, echoed this narrative. However, other Arabic media sources have reported that the protests were indeed aimed at Hamas.

As tensions escalate, Hamas leaders appear to be weighing their options. According to Israel’s public broadcaster Kan, some within the organization have expressed a willingness to release a few hostages in exchange for a truce during Eid al-Fitr, which begins on Sunday evening. This move could be an attempt to ease pressure and regain public favor amid rising unrest.

Meanwhile, Israeli military operations in Gaza have further constrained Hamas’ ability to suppress protests, limiting their reach and enforcement mechanisms.

Al Rabay’s killing has become a symbol of the risks faced by those who dare to challenge Hamas’ rule. As dissent grows and international attention turns to Gaza, one question remains: Will the people’s anger lead to meaningful change, or will Hamas tighten its grip even further?

Enough War’: Why Gazans Are Protesting Hamas Now

Amid the ongoing war in Gaza, hundreds of Palestinians have taken to the streets to protest against both Israel’s military campaign and Hamas, which governs the enclave. Many blame Hamas for triggering the conflict and Israel for the relentless destruction that has followed.

On Tuesday, demonstrators in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza, openly called for Hamas to step down, marking one of the largest protests against the militant group since its October 7 attacks on Israel. A second day of protests followed on Wednesday in Beit Lahia and Deir al-Balah, central Gaza. Protesters chanted slogans such as “For God’s sake, Hamas out” and “We want an end to the war.” Signs read “We Want to Live” and “Stop the Genocide.”

“Our message is to the Israeli army to stop the bloodshed,” said Mahmoud Haj Ahmad, a surgeon at Kamal Adwan Hospital who joined the protest. “Our final message to Hamas: Enough is enough. You have ruled long enough; give others a chance.”

Many Palestinians privately oppose Hamas but fear speaking out due to potential retribution. However, the war’s devastation has driven some to break their silence.

“Our demand is that Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people,” said lawyer Mohammed Attalah. “This chaos they have created is enough.”

Raed Abu Hamouda, another Palestinian from northern Gaza, wanted to join the protests but was unable to reach them. “People’s voices must come before the sound of gunpowder,” he said, emphasizing the need for a unified Palestinian government with international and regional backing.

The war, which began after Hamas’s October 7 attacks that killed over 1,200 Israelis and led to 251 hostages being taken, has resulted in severe consequences for Gaza. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, Israeli strikes have killed more than 50,000 Palestinians. The destruction has left much of the enclave in ruins, worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric reported that 90% of Gaza’s 2.1 million residents have been displaced between October 7, 2023, and January 2025. The situation has deteriorated further after Israel halted humanitarian aid into Gaza.

Hamas’ Government Media Office downplayed the protests, describing them as “spontaneous” and claiming they do not reflect the broader public opinion. “These demonstrations result from the unprecedented pressure our people are experiencing,” it said, blaming Israel for trying to create internal divisions.

Despite this, some activists fear Hamas may crack down on future protests. “There is fear and worry about participating,” said activist Abdullah Ahmed from Jabalia.

Hamas still has a significant support base, with some residents believing the group remains strong. One Hamas supporter, who requested anonymity, insisted that most people are too preoccupied with finding food and water to protest.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pointed to the protests as proof that Israel’s military campaign is working. “In recent days, we have seen something we’ve never seen before – open protests in the Gaza Strip against Hamas rule,” he said during a speech in Israel’s Knesset.

A survey by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research found that public support for Hamas’ October 7 attack has declined—from 71% approval in March 2024 to 57% by June 2024. As the war drags on, living conditions continue to worsen, increasing frustration among civilians.

For many in Gaza, the immediate concerns are survival, not politics. “Our demands are to feed our people, to quench their thirst, to see our children educated and not dying,” said protester Belal Abu Zaid.

When asked whether he feared Hamas’ retaliation, Abu Zaid replied, “There is no more fear. Death can happen at any minute.”

50,000 Killed in Gaza Since Start of Israel-Hamas War, Health Ministry Reports

The death toll in Gaza has surpassed 50,000 since the war between Israel and Hamas began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. As of Sunday, the ministry reported 50,021 fatalities, marking a grim milestone in a conflict with no clear end in sight.

The ministry recorded 41 more deaths in the past 24 hours, highlighting the ongoing devastation as Israel resumes its military operations. The United Nations and the health ministry state that the majority of those killed are women and children. However, thousands more are believed to be buried under the rubble, making the actual death toll potentially much higher.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF), however, disputes the reported figures. In a statement to CNN, the IDF claimed that the Hamas-controlled ministry’s numbers contain “inconsistencies and false determinations,” suggesting that some deaths recorded may be unrelated to the conflict. The IDF emphasized its commitment to minimizing civilian casualties and adhering to international law.

The war reignited after a two-month ceasefire collapsed earlier this week. Tuesday’s airstrikes were among the deadliest since the conflict began, with over 400 Palestinians reportedly killed in a single day, according to Gaza’s health ministry. By Wednesday, Israeli forces had resumed ground operations in the enclave.

Israel launched its military campaign against Hamas on October 7, 2023, following a surprise attack by the militant group on southern Israel. That attack resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and the taking of 251 hostages, according to Israeli authorities.

As violence escalates, Israeli officials have warned of an even harsher phase of military operations. Defense Minister Israel Katz has stated that Israel will maintain a permanent presence in certain areas of Gaza unless Hamas releases the hostages. On Friday, Katz instructed the military to “seize additional areas in Gaza while evacuating the population” and to “expand security zones around Gaza to protect Israeli communities and IDF soldiers.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reinforced this stance, stating, “This is just the beginning.”

The renewed conflict has intensified Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. Nearly all of Gaza’s 2 million residents have been displaced, and the healthcare system is in a state of collapse. Many hospitals have become battlegrounds, exacerbating the already dire situation. Meanwhile, a growing famine looms over parts of the territory, worsened by Israel’s recent blockade of humanitarian aid.

Attempts to reinstate the ceasefire have faltered. Hamas has remained firm on the terms of the agreement it signed with Israel in January, which included a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces and a permanent cessation of hostilities in exchange for the release of all hostages. The second phase of the ceasefire, meant to begin on March 1, never materialized.

Israel, citing Hamas’ rejection of mediation proposals from the U.S. and its continued threats, resumed its military offensive instead.

Israel acknowledges that many Palestinian civilians have been killed but disputes the accuracy of the health ministry’s figures, arguing that Hamas embeds itself within civilian areas, using non-combatants as “human shields.” However, both the United Nations and the U.S. State Department have stated that they believe the ministry’s figures to be largely accurate. Independent academic studies suggest that the true number of casualties may be even higher.

Due to restrictions on foreign journalists, CNN and other international media outlets cannot independently verify the reported death toll.

As the war intensifies, Gazans face an uncertain and devastating future. With no diplomatic resolution in sight, the region remains trapped in a cycle of violence, displacement, and humanitarian crisis.

Hopes for Gaza Ceasefire Fade Despite Renewed U.S. Push Post-Lebanon Truce

As Lebanon experiences a fragile truce following intense clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, Gaza remains engulfed in conflict. Despite U.S. efforts to broker peace, Palestinians in the enclave feel increasingly abandoned.

Shifting Focus: Lebanon’s Truce Leaves Gaza Isolated

The recent ceasefire in Lebanon has offered temporary relief to its citizens, but at a cost to Gaza. Hezbollah, which previously tied its actions to the situation in Gaza, abandoned its demand for a simultaneous truce after facing escalating Israeli military operations. These included targeted assassinations and ground assaults in southern Lebanon.

“Gaza is left alone,” said Hatem Mohamed, a Gaza City resident. “This allows Israel to focus solely on Palestinians and what remains of our cause.”

Deadlock in Gaza Ceasefire Talks

Efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza have stagnated. Mediators like Qatar, once instrumental in negotiations, have withdrawn, closing Hamas’ political office in Doha due to a lack of good-faith discussions. Turkey, a known ally of Hamas, denied reports of hosting a new Hamas bureau, though it acknowledged the group’s officials travel there frequently.

According to Tahani Mustafa, a senior Palestine analyst at the International Crisis Group, the dynamics in Gaza remain unchanged despite Lebanon’s ceasefire. “Both sides hold demands that are irreconcilable. Israel seeks to dismantle Hamas and maintain military presence, while Hamas demands an end to hostilities, the return of displaced people, and no Israeli troops on the ground.”

Netanyahu and Biden: Divergent Goals

While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted at improved conditions for a hostage deal, he remains adamant about continuing military operations until Hamas is dismantled. “Ending the war is not an option until Hamas is eliminated,” he said, rejecting any permanent ceasefire for now.

President Joe Biden, however, sees a potential opening for renewed negotiations, emphasizing cooperation with regional powers like Turkey, Egypt, and Qatar. “We aim to secure a ceasefire, release hostages, and end the war without Hamas in power,” Biden stated.

Hamas and Gaza: Struggles Persist

Despite public support for ceasefire efforts, Hamas maintains firm conditions, including Israel’s complete withdrawal and the release of Palestinian prisoners. However, the leverage Hamas holds—hostages taken during the October 7 attacks—has dwindled. Of the 101 hostages reportedly still in Gaza, at least 34 are presumed dead, further weakening Hamas’ bargaining position.

Jihad Abu Yasser, a baker from northern Gaza, expressed frustration. “We’ve lost leverage. If this war continues, the remaining hostages could die, leaving us negotiating with nothing.”

A Growing Sense of Despair

The prolonged conflict has left many Gazans feeling hopeless. Abu Yasser summarized the sentiment: “People believed a Lebanon ceasefire meant hope for us, but those were lies. For the love of God, stop this war.”

This escalating despair underscores the dire need for meaningful intervention to end the suffering of those caught in the crossfire.
