Tributes Pour In for Stone Roses and Primal Scream Bassist Gary “Mani” Mounfield

Gary “Mani” Mounfield, the influential bassist whose work defined the sound of the Stone Roses and later Primal Scream, has died at the age of 63. His death prompted tributes from artists across Britain’s music scene, reflecting his lasting impact on alternative rock. Mounfield was widely regarded as one of the most distinctive bass players of his generation.

Mani’s Legacy in British Music

Gary “Mani” Mounfield emerged as one of Manchester’s most influential musicians during the late 1980s, playing a central role in shaping the city’s “Madchester” sound. His basslines formed the backbone of the Stone Roses’ celebrated style, which blended indie rock, psychedelic influences, and dance rhythms.

Mounfield’s brother, Greg, announced his passing “with the heaviest of hearts” in a public message, noting the profound loss felt by their family. Fellow musicians, fans, and industry colleagues described Mani as both a gifted performer and a generous presence within the music community.

Oasis singer Liam Gallagher was among the first to honor him, writing: “In total shock and absolutely devastated on hearing the news about Mani. My hero, RIP R Kid.” Members of the Stone Roses also shared their grief, acknowledging the depth of their long-standing friendship and musical partnership.

Bold: A Central Figure in the Stone Roses

Bold Italics: The Sound of Madchester

Mani’s arrival at the Stone Roses helped propel the band to the forefront of Britain’s indie landscape. With Ian Brown on vocals, John Squire on guitar, and Alan “Reni” Wren on drums, the group fused multiple influences—punk, psychedelic rock, dance, funk, and reggae—to create a distinctive sound that defined an era.

Their self-titled 1989 debut album is widely considered one of the most important British albums of its generation. Tracks like I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs the Drums, and I Am the Resurrection were anchored by Mani’s fluid, rhythm-driven basslines, which became a signature feature of the record.

The album topped numerous “greatest albums” lists, including rankings by The Observer in 2004 and NME in 2006. Their second album, Second Coming, released in 1994, continued the band’s chart success, reaching the UK top five.

Bold Italics: Breakup, Reunion, and Final Shows

After internal tensions and management disputes, the Stone Roses disbanded in 1996. Mani later returned for the band’s 2012 reunion, joining them for a major tour that reignited interest among long-time fans and younger listeners.

The band released two singles in 2016, though a full album never materialized. Their final performances took place during 2016 and 2017, including a major concert at Glasgow’s Hampden Park. Speaking to the crowd, Ian Brown said: “Don’t be sad that it’s over, be happy that it happened.”

Fifteen Years with Primal Scream

When the Stone Roses first split, Mani joined Primal Scream in 1996, becoming an essential figure in their evolving sound. His bass playing debuted with the band on Vanishing Point (1997), contributing to the krautrock-inspired single Kowalski. Over 15 years, he recorded four additional albums with the group and toured extensively.

Colleagues described Mani as a creative force whose versatility strengthened Primal Scream’s genre-shifting approach. He continued with the band until 2011, when he departed to prepare for the Stone Roses’ reunion.

Community Tributes and Industry Reaction

Bold Italics: Musicians Remember a Friend and Collaborator

Tributes from across the UK music community highlighted Mani’s character as much as his musical talent. Singer Ian Brown wrote simply: “REST IN PEACE MANi X.” Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder also shared condolences, sending sympathy to Mani’s twin sons and extended family.

Rowetta from Happy Mondays posted a photograph with Mani and his late wife, Imelda, calling him someone she would “miss so much.” Tim Burgess of The Charlatans described him as “one of the absolute best in every way… such a beautiful friend.”

Echo & The Bunnymen’s Ian McCulloch expressed deep sadness, writing that he loved Mani “deeply and forever,” calling the news a shock. Peter Hook of Joy Division and New Order said he was unable to find the words to express his grief.

Bold Italics: A Presence Beyond Music

Manchester publicist Liam Walsh, a long-time friend, said he had known Mani for four decades and remembered him as someone who greeted everyone with warmth. Walsh recalled hearing the Stone Roses’ Fools Gold—with its iconic bassline—playing when he learned of the news, calling it a reminder of the musician’s lasting legacy.

Mounfield was also known for his enthusiasm for Manchester United, frequently sharing insights on the club in interviews, radio appearances, and television discussions.

Personal Life and Recent Projects

Mani’s wife, Imelda, died in 2023 after being diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2020. The couple shared twin sons, born in 2013. Friends noted how profoundly her loss affected him, even as he continued making occasional public appearances.

Just weeks before his death, Mani appeared on the Rockonteurs podcast, telling listeners he was “in a great space” and eager to return to performing. He had recently announced an in-conversation tour scheduled for next year, where he planned to discuss his life in music and his experiences with both the Stone Roses and Primal Scream.

Other Projects and Cultural Contributions

In addition to his two main bands, Mani participated in a range of creative ventures. He appeared in the 2002 film 24 Hour Party People, which chronicled Manchester’s vibrant music scene and the story of Factory Records.

He also joined the supergroup Freebass alongside Andy Rourke of The Smiths and Peter Hook. Though the group disbanded before releasing a full album, they issued It’s a Beautiful Life in 2010.

A Lasting Influence

Musicians and critics frequently cite Mani as one of the most distinctive bassists in modern British music. His work shaped the Madchester movement, influenced multiple generations of indie bands, and left an indelible mark on alternative rock.

As tributes continue, many in the music world are reflecting on the breadth of his legacy—one built on talent, humility, and a genuine love for his craft.

Queen’s Iconic Live Aid Performance Almost Didn’t Happen, Band Members Reveal

Queen’s legendary 1985 Live Aid set is widely hailed as one of the greatest live performances in rock history—but according to bandmates Brian May and Roger Taylor, it very nearly didn’t happen at all.

In a recent interview with Radio Times, the guitarist and drummer opened up about the band’s initial reluctance to join the massive charity concert organized by Bob Geldof.

“We weren’t touring or playing, and it seemed like a crazy idea—this talk of having 50 bands on the same bill,” May recalled. “We thought it was going to be a disaster.”

Even Freddie Mercury wasn’t sold on the idea at first.

“Freddie, in particular, said, ‘I haven’t got the right feeling for this,’” May said. “He wasn’t the leader of the band, but if he dug his heels in, there was no dragging him—so we parked it.”

But Geldof persisted. When he returned to ask again, the energy around the event had started to shift. May knew they might regret passing it up.

“I said to Freddie, ‘If we wake up on the day after this Live Aid show and we haven’t been there, we’re going to be pretty sad.’
He said, ‘Oh, f**k it, we’ll do it.’”

Even after saying yes, there were nerves. The band had been given a tight 17-minute set and were a late addition to the lineup—without the benefit of being part of the original Band Aid single. That made things trickier, Taylor explained.

“We felt relatively senior compared with a lot of the younger acts,” he said. “It wasn’t necessarily our audience. And it was daylight, which we don’t like because the stage lights have no effect.”

“It was so thrown together on stage—we just had to hope all the elements would come together,” Taylor added.
“I wouldn’t say we doubted our own skills, but we had… technical apprehension.”

Despite the uncertainties, Queen delivered a blistering performance that electrified the Wembley Stadium crowd—and millions watching around the world. One unforgettable moment saw Mercury leading the audience in synchronized clapping during “Radio Ga Ga,” creating one of the most iconic images of the event.

“It wasn’t a Queen audience,” May said. “So we went on not knowing if they’d even know what to do.”

“They didn’t think about it—they just did it,” he continued. “Every single hand seemed to be in the air.”

The rest is music history.

The Who Parts Ways With Drummer Zak Starkey — Again

In a surprising turn of events, legendary rock band The Who has officially parted ways with their drummer Zak Starkey for the second time in just one month. The split was announced on Sunday via Instagram by both the band and Starkey himself, sparking confusion and contrasting accounts from each side.

Mixed Messages: Mutual Split or Firing?

Pete Townshend, The Who’s iconic guitarist and main songwriter, hinted the decision was mutual, saying, “the time has come for a change,” and wishing Starkey well with his upcoming projects. But Starkey told a different story, claiming he was outright “fired” and pressured to say he had quit to focus on other musical endeavors.

“It’s been weeks of mayhem, with me going in and out like a bleedin’ squeezebox,” Starkey said, highlighting the chaos behind the scenes.

A Rocky Month for Starkey

Starkey, son of Beatles legend Ringo Starr, has been a key part of The Who’s lineup since 1996. However, last month, the band reportedly fired him after being unhappy with his performance during a show at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Surprisingly, just days later, the band reversed course, announcing Starkey would return after some “communication issues, personal and private on all sides” were resolved. Townshend even addressed the concert troubles, admitting, “maybe we didn’t put enough time into sound checks,” and acknowledging the challenges of performing live.

Why the Sudden Reversal?

Despite the initial reinstatement, it remains unclear why the band changed their minds again. CNN has reached out for comment but hasn’t received a response.

Townshend’s recent statement confirmed the split, saying Starkey has “lots of new projects” and wishing him the best. Starkey pushed back, noting his other work has never interfered with The Who’s sporadic touring schedule.

What’s Next for Zak Starkey?

Starkey’s representative said he’s “quite chilled about the whole affair” and focused on a fresh, contemporary project: his supergroup Mantra of the Cosmos, whose upcoming single features Oasis star Noel Gallagher.

The Who’s Farewell Tour Looms

Starkey’s departure comes just three months before The Who’s highly anticipated farewell North American tour, nearly six decades after the band first hit the scene.

With only Townshend and lead singer Roger Daltrey remaining of the original four founding members — bassist John Entwhistle passed away in 2002, and original drummer Keith Moon, Starkey’s godfather, died in 1978 — Starkey had long been considered the band’s “unofficial” official drummer.

For the upcoming tour, Townshend announced that Scott Devours will step in as drummer. Devours, who has performed with Daltrey on solo gigs and previously filled in for Starkey, is set to carry the beat for The Who’s final shows.

Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes Revisit a Long-Lost Live Gem—Now Complete After 25 Years

Finally, the missing pieces are in place.

Back in 2000, a live album dropped that had all the makings of a rock fan’s dream: legendary Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page teamed up with southern rock powerhouse The Black Crowes for a fiery two-night run at LA’s Greek Theatre. But something was… off.

While the album Live at the Greek featured explosive covers of Zeppelin classics and blues staples, it bafflingly left out a key ingredient: not a single Black Crowes song made the cut.

Now, 25 years later, that oversight has been righted.

The newly released “Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes: Live at the Greek (Anniversary Edition)” is a 36-track celebration of that unforgettable collaboration. It restores 16 previously unreleased songs, including fan-favorites like “Hard to Handle”, “She Talks to Angels”, “Remedy”, “Wiser Time”, and “No Speak No Slave.”

“It was electric. We were abuzz with what we were doing,” recalls frontman Chris Robinson. “It wasn’t just Page and the Crowes—it felt like one band, one unit, and it was powerful.”

The original release left many fans scratching their heads. Despite the powerful performances, the absence of Crowes originals was a major letdown.

The reason? Contractual issues. The band had just parted ways with their label and couldn’t include their own material on the album.

“We were happy with what came out,” guitarist Rich Robinson explains, “but we were bummed. Legally, we couldn’t put our own songs on the record.”

Page shared that sentiment. “I felt really bad,” he says. “The versions of their songs we did were great, and I was sad they couldn’t be heard.”

The concerts, recorded in October 1999 after shows in New York, Massachusetts, and Michigan, were raw, high-energy showcases of mutual admiration and rock chemistry. The lineup featured Page, the Robinson brothers, Sven Pipien (bass), Eddie Harsch (keys), Audley Freed (guitar), and Steve Gorman (drums).

“I didn’t feel nervous like I did in Zeppelin days,” Page admits. “We were riding a wave, and it just felt right.”

Beyond the official setlist, fans will get a few unexpected gems, too—including five tracks from soundcheck and a previously unheard instrumental jam, aptly titled “Jams,” co-written by Rich Robinson and Page.

“The surprises are what really excite us,” says Chris. “We didn’t even realize some of this material existed until we started digging.”

The chemistry forged on stage led to a full U.S. tour in 2000 and a lasting friendship. Page reflects on the experience with warmth: “It was just such a joyful event. We were all joined at the hip while playing.”

As fate would have it, the re-release arrives at a perfect time. The Black Crowes are riding a new wave, having recently earned a Grammy nomination for their 2023 album Happiness Bastards.

Chris Robinson, ever philosophical, believes the timing was meant to be:
“I believe things happen when they’re supposed to. If we had released this earlier, maybe it wouldn’t have hit the same way.”

Iron Maiden’s Nicko McBrain Steps Down from Live Shows After 42 Legendary Years

In a bittersweet announcement, Nicko McBrain, Iron Maiden’s iconic drummer since 1982, has revealed that tonight’s performance in São Paulo on December 7 will mark his final live show with the band. This decision follows a remarkable 42-year career, cementing his legacy as a defining force in heavy metal.

A Farewell to Touring

McBrain, who suffered a stroke in January 2023, has shared that the physical demands of live performances have influenced his choice to step away from the rigorous touring lifestyle. However, he emphasized that this isn’t a complete goodbye.

“After much consideration, it is with both sorrow and joy that I announce my decision to take a step back from the grind of extensive touring. São Paulo will be my final gig with Iron Maiden. I will, however, remain firmly part of the Iron Maiden family, working on various projects my managers, Rod Smallwood and Andy Taylor, have in mind for me,” McBrain said.

Looking Ahead

Nicko plans to focus on personal projects and ventures, including The British Drum Company, Nicko McBrain’s Drum One, Titanium Tart, and his restaurant, Rock-N-Roll Ribs. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to his fans, family, and bandmates for their unwavering support throughout his incredible journey.

“Touring with Maiden these last 42 years has been an incredible journey! To my devoted fan base, you made it all worthwhile, and I love you! To my bandmates, you made it a dream come true, and I love you! I look into the future with much excitement and great hope! Up the Irons!”

A Legacy Honored

Iron Maiden’s longtime manager, Rod Smallwood, paid tribute to McBrain’s contributions:

“Nicko, and we all love you too! Thank you for being an irrepressible force behind the drum kit for Maiden for 42 years and my friend for even longer. You’ve been instrumental in making Iron Maiden the global phenomenon it is today.

He added that it was fitting for McBrain to conclude his live career in Brazil, where Iron Maiden has a special bond with fans.

“To bow out of touring in front of 90,000 fans in São Paulo over two nights is poetic. You are deserving of every accolade these marvelous fans will give you.”

The Future of Iron Maiden

Smallwood also confirmed that Iron Maiden has already selected McBrain’s replacement, with an official announcement expected soon. He assured fans that while McBrain steps back from live performances, he will remain an integral part of the Maiden family.

“As Steve Harris says, ‘Nicko is and will always be part of the Maiden family.’ We look forward to working with him on more special projects and continuing to celebrate the incredible legacy he’s helped create.”

A Historic Goodbye

Nicko McBrain’s final performance with Iron Maiden is not just the end of an era but also a celebration of a career filled with groundbreaking achievements, unforgettable performances, and an unbreakable bond with fans worldwide. His presence will forever echo in the hearts of metalheads everywhere.

“Up the Irons,” indeed.

Phil Lesh, Founding Member of Grateful Dead, Passes Away at 84.

Phil Lesh, the legendary bassist and a pivotal founding member of the iconic rock ensemble Grateful Dead, has sadly passed away at the age of 84. The heartbreaking news was shared on Lesh’s verified Instagram account on Friday, announcing that he died “peacefully” in the morning.

“He was surrounded by his family and enveloped in love,” the announcement conveyed. “Phil brought immense joy to everyone around him, leaving behind an enduring legacy of music and love. We kindly ask that you respect the privacy of the Lesh family during this difficult time.”

CNN has reached out for further comment from a representative of the Grateful Dead. Although the specific cause of death has not been disclosed, the Associated Press reports that Lesh had previously triumphed over prostate cancer, bladder cancer, and a liver transplant in 1998, necessitated by a hepatitis C infection exacerbated by years of heavy alcohol consumption.

A Musical Journey Begins in Berkeley

Born in Berkeley, California, Lesh co-founded the Grateful Dead in 1965 in Palo Alto alongside musical icons Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, and Bill Kreutzmann. With formal training on the violin and trumpet, Lesh secured the second chair in California’s Oakland Symphony Orchestra during his teenage years.

In a twist of fate, while working as a mail truck driver and sound engineer for a local radio station in 1965, Lesh was approached by Garcia to play bass for their nascent rock band, then known as The Warlocks. After familiarizing himself with the instrument and collaborating with Garcia, the duo established a unique creative partnership that allowed them to alternately lead melodies, resulting in one of the band’s hallmarks: extended, improvised musical segments that ensured no two live performances were ever identical.

“It’s always fluid; we pretty much figure it out on the fly,” Lesh noted during a rare interview with the AP in 2009. “You can’t cement those experiences in stone during rehearsal.”

A Legacy of Composition and Collaboration

While Lesh is predominantly celebrated for his legendary, freeform bass playing, he also composed music for some of the band’s most cherished songs, occasionally lending his voice as well. Notable tracks include “Pride of Cucamonga,” “Unbroken Chain,” and “Box of Rain.”

In 2002, reflecting on the unique experience of performing with his bandmates, Lesh articulated, “It’s when the pipeline is open, and that eternal moment—where music truly thrives—becomes accessible to us, making us vessels through which it flows. In essence, music is about transmuting eternity into time.”

The Grateful Dead became synonymous with groundbreaking live performances, paving the way for other beloved groups like Phish. Discussing the profound connection with their devoted fanbase, Lesh stated in 2002, “It’s the community that generates this music; we are merely the conduits, tapping into that energy and channeling it back to them, perhaps at an elevated frequency.”

Reflections on Later Years

After the disbandment of the Grateful Dead in 1995 following Garcia’s passing, Lesh largely refrained from participating in onstage reunions with the surviving members. However, he rejoined them for the 2009 Grateful Dead tour and the 2015 “Fare Thee Well” concerts, commemorating the band’s 50th anniversary.

He continued to perform regularly with a rotating ensemble of musicians known as Phil Lesh and Friends. The Grateful Dead will be honored in January at a benefit gala ahead of the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, following their receipt of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy in 2007.

In a poignant conversation with CNN in 2006, Lesh expressed the transcendent experience of performing alongside his bandmates. “It’s paradise. At that moment, I’m not really there, and neither is anyone else. We become the music, and our individual identities dissolve into the collective consciousness of the group mind. This creative improvisation opens a pipeline to another reality that communicates with us. As transformers of this experience, we translate it into musical thought, a process that cannot be taught or consciously controlled; it simply unfolds when the cosmic forces align, and our individual consciousness is sufficiently open.”

Phil Lesh is survived by his wife, Jill, and their sons, Brian and Grahame.
