LONDON, United Kingdom – Buckingham Palace has issued an unusually direct response to allegations about King Charles III contained in a forthcoming memoir by Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, reopening a long-running dispute over the royal family’s handling of Diana’s death and funeral.

Spencer alleges in Swan Song: Diana, My Sister that then-Prince Charles told him, during an argument over Diana’s funeral arrangements in 1997, “we’ll forget her soon enough.”

He also describes Charles as sounding “giddily elated” during a conversation on the night Diana died in a Paris car crash. Those accounts are Spencer’s recollections nearly three decades after the events. They have not been independently established.

Buckingham Palace responded after excerpts from the memoir were published, saying it normally does not comment on books but noting that the king is mindful that grief can affect judgment and memory many years after a loss. The statement did not provide a detailed account of Charles’s version of the conversations.

Dispute over Diana’s funeral

The disputed conversation concerned plans for Diana’s funeral procession following her death on Aug. 31, 1997.

Spencer writes that he objected to Princes William and Harry, then 15 and 12, walking behind their mother’s coffin. He believed Diana would not have wanted her young sons to take part in the public procession.

According to Spencer’s account, he subsequently received a telephone call from Charles, who insisted that the boys should participate. Spencer says the disagreement became heated before Charles allegedly made the remark about Diana being forgotten.

William later described the decision to participate in the procession as a collective family decision. Both William and Harry ultimately walked behind their mother’s coffin alongside Charles, Spencer and Prince Philip during the procession to Westminster Abbey.

The historical record therefore establishes that the princes participated in the procession. The private conversation and the precise words Spencer attributes to Charles remain disputed.

Spencer stands by his account

Spencer has rejected suggestions that his recollection is unreliable.

In a BBC interview broadcast Friday, he said he remembered the conversation clearly and maintained that the words attributed to Charles were exactly what was said. He also said he had told friends and family about the exchange at the time because he considered it shocking.

Spencer’s position is that the memoir records his personal memories of Diana and the aftermath of her death. The publisher describes the book as his first extended account of his sister and says it was written ahead of the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death in 2027.

The palace has not publicly provided a detailed alternative reconstruction of the alleged conversation.

That leaves the central exchange as a disputed recollection: Spencer says Charles made the remark, while the palace has challenged the reliability of the memories surrounding the claim rather than publishing a detailed account of what was said.

A memoir arriving nearly 30 years later

Swan Song: Diana, My Sister is scheduled for worldwide publication on Sept. 22, 2026. Penguin Random House says the book examines Diana’s life from her brother’s perspective and covers the final week of her life.

Spencer, who delivered Diana’s funeral eulogy at Westminster Abbey in September 1997, has said he wanted to put his own memories on record rather than continue seeing accounts of his sister that he believes contain inaccuracies.

The memoir also contains other recollections about the royal family’s response to Diana’s death, including Spencer’s account of discussions over her funeral and her former status as a member of the royal family. Those claims have likewise drawn attention because they concern private conversations and decisions from an event that occurred almost three decades ago.

The palace’s response is notable because Buckingham Palace generally does not comment publicly on books about members of the royal family. It also comes ahead of the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death, when renewed public interest in her life and legacy is expected.

For now, the dispute centers on competing recollections of private conversations in the aftermath of Diana’s death. Spencer says he is recording what he remembers as accurately as possible; Buckingham Palace has questioned how grief may have affected those memories.

LONDON, United Kingdom – Princess Diana’s famous black dress known as the “Revenge Dress” has gone on public display in London ahead of its return to the auction market, nearly 30 years after Diana last owned it.

Sotheby’s will offer the Christina Stambolian silk dress at a live auction in New York on Dec. 9. The auction house estimates it will sell for between $150,000 and $300,000.

The dress was worn by Diana on June 29, 1994, when she attended a fundraising event at London’s Serpentine Gallery. That same evening, a television interview was broadcast in which her then-estranged husband, Prince Charles, acknowledged that he had been unfaithful during their marriage.

The dress subsequently became known in the media as the “Revenge Dress,” a name that has remained attached to it for more than three decades.

A dress that became part of Diana’s public image

The black silk design was created by Greek-born designer Christina Stambolian.

It features an off-the-shoulder neckline, a fitted bodice, an asymmetrical hemline and a short train. Diana paired it with a pearl-and-sapphire choker, black heels and a small clutch.

She had owned the dress for several years before wearing it publicly. According to accounts surrounding the garment, Diana had initially considered it too daring for a royal appearance but selected it for the Serpentine event after changing her planned outfit.

The appearance quickly became one of the most recognizable images of Diana’s post-separation years.

Its significance extended beyond the garment itself. Diana had separated from Charles in 1992, and the public attention surrounding the royal marriage had made her clothing a frequent subject of international coverage.

The Stambolian dress became associated with a period in which Diana increasingly used fashion to present a more independent public image.

Diana sold the dress for charity

Diana did not keep the dress for the remainder of her life.

In June 1997, two months before her death, she included it in a charity auction of 79 dresses held in New York. The sale raised more than $3 million for cancer and AIDS charities.

The Stambolian dress was purchased by Briege and Graeme Mackenzie for about £40,000.

The couple subsequently used the dress to raise money for charitable causes in Scotland. After Graeme Mackenzie died, Briege decided it was time to part with the garment.

In a statement released through Sotheby’s, she said she hoped its next owner would enjoy it as much as she and her late husband had.

The coming sale will therefore be the dress’s first return to the auction market since Diana sold it in 1997.

Sotheby’s expects strong collector interest

Sotheby’s has placed a presale estimate of $150,000 to $300,000 on the dress.

The auction house will exhibit it internationally before the New York sale. Following its London presentation, the dress is scheduled to travel to Hong Kong and Geneva before reaching New York for the December auction.

The estimate is below the price achieved by another famous Diana dress in 2023.

A black-and-blue evening gown Diana wore to a 1985 dinner sold for about $1.14 million, establishing a record for a dress worn by the princess at auction at the time.

That earlier result does not establish what the Stambolian dress will ultimately fetch. Auction prices depend on bidder interest, provenance, condition and the significance collectors attach to an individual garment.

The dress became a symbol beyond fashion

The “Revenge Dress” label was not created by Diana or Stambolian. It emerged from media coverage of the 1994 appearance and became the shorthand used to describe the image.

Its enduring reputation has since expanded into fashion and popular culture.

The dress is frequently cited as an example of how clothing can communicate identity and public confidence without an accompanying statement. Diana’s decision to appear in the striking black design on a night when international attention was focused on her marriage gave the garment an unusually strong connection to a specific historical moment.

The association has also influenced later fashion references. Stambolian produced a replica of the original, while a recreation of Diana’s look was used for Elizabeth Debicki’s portrayal of the princess in the television series “The Crown.”

The original, however, has remained in private ownership since 1997.

A new audience nearly 32 years later

Diana died in a Paris car crash in August 1997 at age 36, only weeks after the charity auction that included the Stambolian dress.

The garment has therefore spent almost all of the past three decades away from public display.

Its appearance at Sotheby’s in London on Sept. 18 marks the first time in nearly 30 years that the original dress has been publicly exhibited ahead of a sale.

The upcoming auction is consequently selling more than a piece of designer clothing. The garment carries a documented connection to one of the most closely photographed moments of Diana’s public life, as well as its own history of charitable fundraising and private ownership.

Whether its final price approaches Sotheby’s upper estimate will be determined when bidding takes place in New York on Dec. 9.
