Pope Francis on Aging, Health, and Mortality: His Own Reflections

Pope Francis has always been candid about his health, aging, and the inevitability of death. He has openly discussed his physical ailments and even directed his doctors to provide daily updates on his battle with pneumonia.

On Monday, his medical team shared some positive news: while he remains hospitalized, he is no longer in immediate danger.

The 88-year-old pontiff’s transparency is in stark contrast to past Vatican traditions. Unlike St. John Paul II, whose battle with Parkinson’s disease was long suspected but never officially confirmed until after his death, Francis has chosen a more open approach to discussing his health.

This openness has been evident throughout his papacy. In 2021, he granted an unprecedented interview to an Argentine doctor who published a book detailing Francis’ physical and mental health history. Just last week, he released an audio message from his hospital bed, his weakened voice revealing the toll of his illness.

On Aging and Society’s Treatment of the Elderly

Pope Francis has often spoken about the challenges of growing old and the way modern society treats the elderly. He has criticized today’s “throwaway culture,” where people are discarded when they are no longer deemed productive. His commitment to honoring the elderly was evident in his insistence that Pope Benedict XVI remain involved in the life of the church even after his retirement.

His views on aging have remained steadfast, even as he himself has become reliant on a wheelchair and walker.

In his 2010 book On Heaven and Earth, co-authored with Rabbi Abraham Skorka, Francis condemned the mistreatment of older people, especially when they are placed in nursing homes and neglected by their families.

“The elderly are the keepers of history, the memory of a people, a nation, a family, and a culture,” he wrote.

On Death and Mortality

Francis has long reflected on death, inspired by a phrase he learned from his grandmother Rosa, who helped raise him:

“See that God sees you, see that he is watching you, see that you will die and you don’t know when.”

This saying has stayed with him throughout his life. He recalled in a 2018 speech to priests that his grandmother made him recite it daily, saying, “so you will remember that life has an end.”

“I didn’t understand much at the time, but that verse, since I was three years old, has stuck with me,” he said. “And it helped me. The thing was kind of bleak, but it helped me.”

On His Own Health Struggles

Francis has never shied away from discussing his health challenges. In 2021, Argentine journalist and physician Dr. Nelson Castro published The Health of Popes, which included detailed insights from Francis himself.

In a rare move, Francis granted Castro access to the Vatican Secret Archives to research the health history of past popes. He also sat for a personal interview in 2019, where he spoke at length about his own medical history:

A severe respiratory infection in his youth led to the removal of the upper lobe of his right lung.

A gangrenous gallbladder required surgery while he was the Jesuit provincial superior.

He has suffered from compressed vertebrae, flat feet, and fatty liver.

Perhaps most notably, Francis revealed that he sought psychiatric help during Argentina’s military dictatorship. For six months, he saw a psychiatrist weekly to manage anxiety while secretly transporting people to safety.

“In those six months, she helped me with how to manage the fears of that time,” he recalled. “If you can imagine what it was like to transport someone hidden in the car — covered by a blanket — and pass through military controls. … It created an enormous tension in me.”

Francis said therapy helped him maintain a sense of balance when making decisions, adding that all priests should have an understanding of human psychology.

“We should offer a mate to our neuroses,” he said, referencing the South American tea. “They are our companions for life.”

A Papacy Defined by Transparency

Francis’ willingness to speak openly about his health marks a departure from past papal traditions. By sharing his vulnerabilities, he has sought to foster a culture of honesty and compassion—both within the church and society at large. His reflections on aging, illness, and mortality serve as a reminder of the dignity of life at every stage, reinforcing his lifelong advocacy for the marginalized, including the elderly and infirm.

Pope Francis Resting After Sudden Respiratory Episode, Vatican Reports

Pontiff Under Medical Care Following Breathing Difficulties

Vatican City, March 1, 2025 – Pope Francis is resting after experiencing a sudden episode of respiratory difficulty, the Vatican announced. The 87-year-old pontiff spent a peaceful night under medical supervision after being placed on a breathing machine on Friday.

Health Update: Pope Alert but Under Watchful Care

According to the Holy See Press Office, the pope remained “alert and oriented at all times” despite complications from vomiting, some of which led to aspiration. Medical staff promptly treated the issue before placing him on mechanical ventilation.

A Vatican source told CNN that Francis is not intubated but is wearing a breathing mask for support. However, a spokesperson cautioned that the pope is not yet out of danger, and doctors expect to have a clearer picture of his condition in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Ongoing Health Challenges and Hospitalization

This latest health scare comes just two weeks after Pope Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for lung-related complications, including bronchitis and pneumonia. This marks his fourth and longest hospitalization since becoming pope in 2013.

Francis has dealt with respiratory issues for much of his life. As a young man, he suffered from severe pneumonia and had part of one lung removed. The Vatican has been providing twice-daily health updates, with a prior report on Thursday stating that his condition was “improving” but with an uncertain prognosis.

Schedule Cleared Amid Intensive Treatment

To accommodate his medical care, the Vatican has cleared the pope’s schedule, including next week’s Ash Wednesday service, a key event marking the beginning of Lent. This is only the second time in his 12-year papacy that he will not lead the ceremony. Instead, a cardinal will take his place.

Call for Prayers

On Friday night, Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández of Argentina urged the faithful to pray not only for Pope Francis but also for those suffering around the world.

“Certainly, it is close to the Holy Father’s heart that our prayers be not only for him, but also for all those who, in this particular dramatic and suffering moment of the world, bear the heavy burden of war, sickness, and poverty.”

The world continues to watch and pray as the pope receives medical care. More updates are expected as doctors monitor his progress.

Global Outpouring of Prayers and Support for Pope Francis

As Pope Francis continues his stay at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, heartfelt messages and prayers for his recovery have flooded in from religious leaders, political figures, and faithful worldwide. Since his hospitalization on February 14 due to bilateral pneumonia, well-wishers, including hospitalized children, have expressed both concern and joy at having him nearby.

Messages from Religious Leaders

Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople

One of the most touching messages comes from Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, who addressed Pope Francis as his “beloved brother.” In a handwritten letter, the Orthodox Patriarch wished him a “swift and complete recovery” and a speedy return to his sacred and important duties.

United in Prayer

In Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch, urged the faithful to join in prayer, calling for unity “as one family in faith.” He emphasized the importance of standing together in supplication for the Pope’s well-being.

Similarly, Cardinal Béchara Boutros Pierre Raï, Patriarch of Antioch of the Maronites, shared that he has been praying for the Pope both publicly and privately, asking the Lord to grant him healing and strength.

From Africa, the Symposium of Bishops’ Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) assured the Pope of the spiritual closeness and solidarity of the entire continent.

Prayers from Argentina and Latin America

In Pope Francis’ homeland, Argentina, Archbishop Jorge Ignacio García Cuerva of Buenos Aires has called for prayers, expressing love and support for the Holy Father. He asked God to restore his health and sustain him in his mission.

Throughout Latin America, bishops and dioceses from Uruguay, Mexico, Ecuador, Chile, Peru, Nicaragua, and Brazil have also sent messages of encouragement.

The Latin American and Caribbean Episcopal Council (CELAM), led by Cardinal Jaime Spengler, wrote a heartfelt letter to Pope Francis:

“We pray for you, so that you may feel the strength and consolation of the Lord and that He may grant you much patience.”

Ahead of the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter on February 22, Cardinal Spengler has encouraged the faithful to include a special prayer intention during Mass:

“Lord God, your servant, Pope Francis, has become for us ‘a witness to the sufferings of Christ.’”

Support from North America and Asia

In Canada, Bishop William McGrattan of Calgary, President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), has invited individuals, families, and parish communities to pray for the Pope’s full recovery.

“May the Lord, through the intercession of Our Lady, grant him renewed strength, health, and energy.”

In the United States, the Bishops’ Conference has published a special prayer for Pope Francis on its official website.

Across Asia, Catholic communities are also rallying in prayer. In the Philippines, Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), has urged the faithful to pray for the Pope’s healing and recovery.

In China, Catholics are engaging in prayer and fasting for the Pope’s health. The website Xinde.org, a reference point for the mainland Chinese Catholic community, has been sharing updates from the Vatican and has encouraged the faithful to offer a special prayer.

World Leaders Express Concern and Support

Political leaders have also joined in expressing their support. On February 19, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited Pope Francis in the hospital.

On February 23, UN Secretary-General António Guterres spoke with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, to convey his best wishes, emphasizing:

“The Pope is important not only for the Church but for the entire world.”

At an event in Bologna, Italy, Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, President of the Italian Bishops’ Conference (CEI), shared a hopeful message, saying that the latest updates suggest “we are heading in the right direction” towards a full recovery.

Medical Update: Pope Francis Remains in Good Spirits

On Friday evening, Pope Francis’ medical team provided an update on his condition. While they confirmed that his illness is not life-threatening, they noted that he is not yet out of danger and will need to remain in the hospital for at least another week.

Despite his condition, the Pope was reported to be sitting upright, working, and even joking with those around him. The Holy See Press Office also confirmed that he had a restful night.

A United Prayer for the Holy Father

As the world watches and prays, Pope Francis continues to receive an overwhelming outpouring of love, support, and well-wishes. From religious leaders to world figures, and from the faithful in churches to children in hospital beds, one message remains clear:

The world is united in prayer for Pope Francis’ healing and swift recovery.
