The Royal Palace announced that the funeral ceremony will take place at Oslo Cathedral at 1 p.m. on September 9. It will be led by Olav Fykse Tveit, preses of the Church of Norway, with Oslo Bishop Sunniva Gylver and other church and musical figures participating.

Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on August 28, ending a 35-year reign that began in 1991. His son immediately succeeded him as King Haakon VIII.

Norwegians pay tribute

Memorial services were held throughout Norway on Sunday as citizens gathered to mark the death of a monarch who had been a familiar national figure for more than three decades.

In Oslo, mourners continued to leave flowers, cards and candles outside the Royal Palace, where Harald’s coffin was brought from the hospital after his death.

At Oslo Cathedral, Dean Pål Kristian Balstad opened the memorial service by acknowledging the personal loss suffered by Harald’s family as well as the country’s national grief.

The royal family attended a memorial service at Asker Church, southwest of Oslo.

King Haakon leads the mourning

Harald’s son, the new King Haakon VIII, delivered an emotional address Saturday evening in which he spoke about losing his father and promised to serve Norway with the same dedication.

Haakon adopted the royal motto “All for Norway,” a motto previously associated with his great-grandfather. His wife, Mette-Marit, is now queen, while their eldest daughter, Ingrid Alexandra, has become crown princess and heir to the throne.

The new king now faces the responsibility of guiding the monarchy through the transition while Norway remains in an official period of national mourning.

National mourning continues

Norway’s government established a national mourning period beginning with Harald’s death and continuing until after the funeral.

Flags at royal residences, government buildings and military installations are being flown at half-staff. Churches across the country are also participating in memorial observances.

The government has asked municipalities to provide places where residents can light candles or leave tributes. Condolence books have also been made available at municipal buildings across the country.

Some social celebrations, including weddings and baptisms, have been postponed during the mourning period, according to Norwegian public broadcaster NRK.

Public will be able to pay respects

The Royal Palace said the public will have an opportunity to pass by Harald’s coffin in the Palace Chapel beginning Tuesday, September 1.

The public viewing is scheduled from 2 p.m. Tuesday until 6 p.m. on September 8, the day before the funeral.

The arrangement will allow Norwegians to pay their final respects before the funeral ceremony.

A ceremonial procession will then carry Harald’s coffin from the Royal Palace to Oslo Cathedral on September 9. After the funeral, the procession will continue to Akershus Fortress, where a private memorial gathering will be held.

Harald will be buried at Akershus

Following the funeral, Harald will be laid to rest in the Royal Mausoleum at Akershus Fortress.

The mausoleum contains the remains of several Norwegian monarchs and members of the royal family, including Harald’s father, King Olav V, and his grandfather, King Haakon VII.

The funeral arrangements follow the traditions used for previous Norwegian monarchs.

A country remembers a long-serving king

Harald became king following the death of his father, King Olav V, in 1991.

During his reign, Harald became known for a relatively informal and inclusive style of monarchy and maintained high levels of public support.
