NFL MVP Josh Allen has been rewarded for his standout season with a historic contract extension from the Buffalo Bills.

On Sunday, the Bills announced a new deal for the 28-year-old quarterback, worth $330 million, with a record-breaking $250 million guaranteed, making Allen one of the highest-paid players in NFL history. The total value of the deal ranks second behind Patrick Mahomes’ 10-year, $450 million extension signed in 2020 with Kansas City.

Key Details of Allen’s New Contract

• Duration: Two additional years, locking Allen in through the 2030 season.
• Guaranteed Money: $250 million, surpassing DeShaun Watson’s $230 million guaranteed in his 2022 contract with Cleveland.
• Rank: The total value of Allen’s contract comes in just behind Mahomes’ record-breaking deal, while Dak Prescott currently tops the league in average annual salary with $60 million per season.

Allen’s Rise to NFL MVP

Allen’s new contract follows a remarkable NFL MVP season in which he led the Buffalo Bills to a 13-4 record and their fifth consecutive AFC East title. It was a season where Allen proved he could thrive despite a lack of star receivers, embracing a team-first “Everybody Eats” mentality. Despite trading away top receiver Stefon Diggs and losing Gabe Davis to free agency, Allen managed to adapt and lead the team to dominance.

Allen finished the season with 28 touchdown passes, 12 rushing touchdowns, and even a receiving touchdown—a first in his career. His impressive stats also included a career-low six interceptions, a significant improvement from the 18 he threw the previous year. This efficiency helped him post one of his best seasons despite not topping 4,000 passing yards for the first time since 2019.

Rewriting Franchise Records

Allen has become one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks, shattering nearly every Buffalo Bills franchise record for passing and scoring. His impressive numbers include:

• 76 career wins—the most by any NFL player through their first seven seasons.
• 262 total touchdowns, surpassing Jim Kelly for most in franchise history.
• 4,544 passing yards in 2020, a team record, along with 37 TD passes in the same season.

Allen has also set franchise marks for most completions in a season (646 in 2021) and best completion rate (69.2% in 2020).

A Super Bowl Dream Still Unfulfilled

While Allen’s career has been nothing short of stellar, the one missing achievement remains a Super Bowl appearance. The Bills came close in 2020 and again last season, but both times were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game.

Personal Milestones

Alongside his professional achievements, Allen has also experienced significant personal milestones. In mid-November, during the team’s bye week, he proposed to actress and singer Hailee Steinfeld, marking a new chapter in his personal life. Their relationship began in the spring of 2023, and Allen credits Steinfeld with playing a major role in his career development.

“She’s been a huge part. The morale, the support. When I get home, she’s my biggest fan, my biggest supporter. She’s just the best,” Allen said in December.

Salary Cap and Team Building

The new contract is expected to help the Buffalo Bills manage their salary cap, especially with the NFL’s business year set to begin. The team was projected to be near the cap limit before releasing veteran edge rusher Von Miller earlier this week. The deal also follows GM Brandon Beane’s recent efforts to lock in the Bills’ young core, with extensions signed for Greg Rousseau, Terrel Bernard, and Khalil Shakir.

Legacy and Achievements

Allen, a two-time All-Pro, has already established a remarkable legacy in his first seven seasons:

• 262 total touchdowns and 30,595 total yards — the most in NFL history for any player in their first seven seasons.
• Franchise records in passing yards, TD passes, and completion percentage.

With this record-breaking extension, Allen solidifies his place as the cornerstone of the Buffalo Bills for years to come, as the team continues its quest for a Super Bowl title under his leadership.
