NEW YORK — Paul Tagliabue, the former National Football League commissioner who presided over an era of immense growth, stability, and transformation for American football, died Sunday at his home in Chevy Chase, Maryland. He was 84.

According to NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy, Tagliabue’s family informed the league that he died of heart failure. He had been battling Parkinson’s disease in recent years.

Tagliabue led the NFL from 1989 to 2006, succeeding Pete Rozelle and setting the stage for unprecedented financial expansion, record television deals, and decades of labor peace. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020 as part of the NFL’s centennial class.

A Steward of the Modern NFL

Current Commissioner Roger Goodell, who succeeded Tagliabue in 2006, paid tribute to his predecessor, calling him “the ultimate steward of the game.”

“Tall in stature, humble in presence, and decisive in his loyalty to the NFL,” Goodell said in a statement. “I am forever grateful and proud to have Paul as my friend and mentor. He helped shape me as an executive, but also as a man, husband, and father.”

Moments of silence were held before several NFL games on Sunday in honor of Tagliabue and Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Marshawn Kneeland, who died last week.

During his 17-year tenure, Tagliabue oversaw the construction of numerous state-of-the-art stadiums, the negotiation of billion-dollar television contracts, and a period of remarkable labor stability — with no strikes or lockouts.

Expansion, Labor Peace, and the Rooney Rule

Under Tagliabue’s leadership, the NFL expanded to new markets while maintaining competitive balance. The league saw the return of professional football to Cleveland after the Browns’ relocation and the eventual restoration of two teams to Los Angeles after their departure in the 1990s.

He also introduced one of the league’s most influential diversity measures: the “Rooney Rule.” The policy required every team with a head coaching vacancy to interview at least one minority candidate — a groundbreaking step later expanded to include senior front-office and league executive positions.

When Tagliabue took office in 1989, the league had only one Black head coach in the modern era. By the time he stepped down, seven minority coaches had led NFL teams.

He also implemented what was widely considered the strongest substance-abuse policy in major professional sports, reflecting his belief in integrity and accountability both on and off the field.

Decisive Leadership in Crisis

Tagliabue’s tenure was defined by his calm, measured leadership — never more so than after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. He made the historic decision to cancel all NFL games scheduled for the following weekend, prioritizing national mourning and safety.

It was one of the few times he was publicly compared favorably to Rozelle, who had controversially allowed games to proceed after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963 — a decision Rozelle later called one of his greatest regrets.

Controversy Over Concussions

Despite his many achievements, Tagliabue’s legacy has been complicated by criticism that he failed to take stronger action on concussions — an issue that has continued to haunt the league.

In a 2017 interview, he apologized for comments he made in 1994 dismissing concussions as a “pack-journalism issue.” Tagliabue later acknowledged the remarks were misguided and that he lacked sufficient data at the time.

“My language was intemperate, and it led to a serious misunderstanding,” he said. “There was a need for better data and more reliable information about concussions.”

Though concussion research lagged during his tenure, Tagliabue’s focus on labor relations and revenue growth left an enduring imprint on the modern NFL.

A Legacy of Cooperation and Respect

One of Tagliabue’s earliest and most consequential decisions was to build a direct working relationship with NFL Players Association Executive Director Gene Upshaw.

Unlike his predecessors, Tagliabue personally led all labor negotiations, sidelining the management council that had long handled talks with the union. The move was instrumental in achieving long-term labor stability.

“Paul had insisted that final control over labor and business matters rest in the commissioner’s office,” said Joe Browne, a longtime NFL executive who worked closely with both Rozelle and Tagliabue. “That was a large step forward toward the tremendous rebound and expansion we had in the 1990s and beyond.”

Upshaw often described their approach as one based on compromise and mutual respect. Though some union members criticized the NFLPA for being too accommodating, the period of peace enabled unprecedented league-wide prosperity.

From the Courtroom to the Commissioner’s Office

Before joining the NFL, Tagliabue was a respected Washington attorney at Covington & Burling, where he managed the league’s legal affairs. A 1962 Georgetown University graduate and basketball team captain, Tagliabue earned his law degree from New York University and later served in the U.S. Defense Department.

At 6 feet 5 inches tall, he was a commanding presence, but colleagues often described him as private and analytical rather than charismatic — a contrast to the media-savvy Rozelle.

He was selected commissioner in 1989 after a contentious selection process that divided the league’s owners. Tagliabue ultimately united both factions and presided over an era of expansion, stadium construction, and lucrative media partnerships that transformed the NFL into a global sports powerhouse.

A Personal Touch Amid Tragedy

Those who worked closely with Tagliabue recall his quiet compassion, particularly in times of loss. Following the September 11 attacks, he personally attended Mass with Ed Tighe, an NFL lawyer whose wife was killed in the tragedy — a gesture that left a lasting impression across the league.

Hall of Fame player and coach Art Shell, the first modern-era Black head coach, remembered Tagliabue as a pragmatic and forward-thinking leader.

“His philosophy on almost every issue was, ‘If it’s broke, fix it — and if it’s not broke, fix it anyway,’” Shell said. “He never lost sight of his responsibility to do what was right for the game.”

A Lasting Influence on the NFL

Paul John Tagliabue was born on November 24, 1940, in Jersey City, New Jersey. His leadership helped steer professional football through a period of global recognition, economic dominance, and structural reform.

While debates about his handling of player safety continue, few dispute that Tagliabue’s vision and diplomacy laid the groundwork for the NFL’s rise into one of the world’s most successful sports enterprises.

He is survived by his family, who have asked for privacy as tributes pour in from across the sports community.

Patriots Honor Tom Brady with Larger-Than-Life Statue Outside Gillette Stadium

Published: August 9, 2025, 19:00 EDT

Legendary quarterback celebrated for six Super Bowl wins and 20 years of leadership

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The New England Patriots have immortalized Tom Brady with a massive bronze statue, paying tribute to the quarterback who led the team to six Super Bowl victories and redefined the franchise’s history. The six-ton, 17-foot monument now stands proudly outside Gillette Stadium, symbolizing not only his on-field accomplishments but also his lasting impact on the sport.

Brady, who was famously drafted 199th overall in 2000, returned to Foxborough Friday evening for the unveiling ceremony, held before the Patriots’ exhibition opener against the Washington Commanders. Fans, teammates, and NFL dignitaries gathered to celebrate the career of one of football’s greatest players.

A Monument to a Storied Career

The statue, designed by sculptor and lifelong Patriots fan Jeff Buccacio, features a 12-foot-tall depiction of Brady atop a six-sided granite base — one side for each of the Patriots’ Super Bowl victories during his tenure. The entire structure measures 17 feet, representing the 17 AFC East division titles New England won in Brady’s 19 seasons with the team.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft, speaking at the ceremony, called the moment historic.

“Tom will forever be remembered as the player who transformed this organization,” Kraft said. “It is only fitting he becomes the first player in Patriots history to be honored with a bronze statue outside the stadium.”

Brady, a three-time NFL MVP and five-time Super Bowl MVP, retired in 2023 as the league’s most decorated quarterback. Over his 23-year career — including two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — he secured seven Super Bowl titles, set NFL records for wins, passing yards, and touchdowns, and became a global icon for the sport.

A Return Filled with Humor and Heart

Brady addressed the crowd with his trademark mix of humility and humor.

“When I was drafted, I just hoped to make the team,” he said. “I never dreamed I’d be standing here 25 years later, made of bronze and frozen in time. Although, given my 40-yard dash speed, maybe it’s pretty accurate.”

In a playful moment, Brady pretended to take a phone call from former coach Bill Belichick, joking that Belichick still thought there was “room for improvement.” He also took a lighthearted jab at longtime rivals, the New York Jets.

“This statue isn’t just for Pats fans. It’ll also give Jets fans something to throw their beers at every year — probably in the second quarter,” he quipped.

A Gathering of Football’s Finest

The ceremony drew an impressive crowd of NFL personalities and fans. Brady’s parents and children were in attendance, along with current Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, former teammates Devin and Jason McCourty, Wes Welker, David Andrews, and Brian Hoyer. Members of the Washington Commanders organization, including general manager Adam Peters and former Patriot Deatrich Wise, also stopped by to witness the moment.

Coach Vrabel reflected on the honor after the Patriots’ 48–18 win over the Commanders.

“Having someone like Tom as part of this organization is truly unique and special,” Vrabel said. “I’m glad I could be here to celebrate it.”

From Long Shot to Legend

Brady’s journey from an overlooked sixth-round draft pick to a global sports icon remains one of the most remarkable stories in NFL history. His leadership, relentless work ethic, and competitive spirit helped transform the Patriots into a dynasty, cementing their place in football history.

In 2023, the Patriots fast-tracked his induction into the team’s Hall of Fame, waiving the standard four-year waiting period. His iconic No. 12 jersey was retired the same day — an honor reserved for the franchise’s most influential figures.

A Lasting Symbol in Foxborough

The statue’s location outside the Patriots’ Hall of Fame and Pro Shop ensures that fans will encounter it on game days and throughout the year. It stands not only as a tribute to Brady’s extraordinary achievements but also as a reminder of the Patriots’ golden era under his leadership.

As fans posed for photos and chanted Brady’s name, the quarterback expressed gratitude for the decades of support.

“This isn’t just my statue,” Brady said. “It belongs to everyone who believed in me — my teammates, coaches, family, and the fans who made Foxborough feel like home.”

For Patriots supporters, the bronze figure is more than just a work of art — it’s a permanent symbol of the winning culture and unforgettable moments Brady brought to New England.

Bill Belichick Defends Girlfriend Jordon Hudson After Viral CBS Interview Stir

Bill Belichick may not have coached a game yet for the North Carolina Tar Heels, but his new chapter is already grabbing headlines—this time off the field.

The legendary NFL coach pushed back Wednesday against how a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning portrayed his relationship with 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson. The interview, centered on Belichick’s new book The Art of Winning, included a now-viral moment when Hudson cut in as reporter Tony Dokoupil asked how the couple first met.

Belichick, 73, issued a statement through the university, saying CBS strayed from what was supposed to be a football- and book-focused conversation.

“I was surprised when unrelated topics were introduced,” Belichick said, adding that he had “repeatedly expressed” to Dokoupil and the producers that he preferred to stay on topic. “Jordon, with whom I share both a personal and professional relationship, stepped in to help refocus the discussion.”

The coach clarified that Hudson wasn’t dodging any specific question, but rather ensuring the interview stayed aligned with their original intent. He also took issue with the editing, suggesting CBS crafted a misleading narrative.

“The final eight-minute segment doesn’t reflect the productive 35-minute conversation we had,” Belichick said. “Instead, it selectively shows a few minutes to suggest Jordon was controlling the conversation—which is simply not true.”

CBS responded later Wednesday, stating the interview was always intended to be wide-ranging and that “no preconditions or limitations” had been agreed upon.

During the interview, Belichick was asked how he handles public scrutiny of his personal life. His answer was straightforward:

“Never been too worried about what everybody else thinks,” he said. “Just trying to do what’s best for me and what’s right.”

As for the question that stirred the viral moment—how they met—Belichick shared on Wednesday that it was on a 2021 flight to Palm Beach, Florida. The timeline aligns with a post Hudson made earlier this year.

Hudson was described by CBS as a “constant presence” during filming, a detail that added to online speculation. However, Belichick insists the real story was lost in the editing room.

Belichick’s move to North Carolina marks his first college coaching job after decades of NFL dominance, including six Super Bowl wins as the New England Patriots’ head coach and two more as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants. He parted ways with the Patriots in January 2024 after a historic 24-year run.

Now in Chapel Hill, he’s focused on football—and clearly, on setting the record straight.

A Historic Night for Barkley and the Eagles

In a moment of triumph, Saquon Barkley stood on the field of the Superdome, holding his young daughter as a storm of confetti rained down. With a Philadelphia newspaper in hand—boldly stamped with “CHAMPS!“ above his photo—Barkley soaked in the moment.

But what he really wanted to hold was the Lombardi Trophy.

“She looked prettier in person, I’ll tell you that,” Barkley said, kissing the trophy. “Something that you dream of. I’m just happy to hold it.”

The Eagles’ star running back capped off a record-breaking season by setting a new NFL single-season rushing record—including playoffs—surpassing Terrell Davis’ mark of 2,476 yards from 1998. Barkley finished the year with 2,504 total rushing yards and 18 touchdowns, cementing his place in history.

Breaking Records in the Biggest Game

While Barkley’s Super Bowl rushing total of 57 yards wasn’t eye-popping, it was enough to etch his name in the record books.

The AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year entered the game needing just 30 yards to break Davis’ record. He hit the milestone on a 2-yard carry just before halftime, finishing the game with 12 carries for 31 yards at the break. Though his 2.6 yards per carry in the Super Bowl was far below his 5.8-yard regular-season average, the Eagles didn’t need their star back to be spectacular.

Philadelphia took control early, thanks to:
Two Jalen Hurts touchdowns
Two defensive interceptions
A commanding 24-0 halftime lead over Kansas City

At 28 years old—celebrating his birthday on Super Bowl Sunday—Barkley had every reason to feel festive.

A Season for the Ages

Barkley’s regular-season total of 2,005 rushing yards made him just the ninth running back in NFL history to hit the 2,000-yard mark. His seven touchdowns of 60+ yards (including playoffs) set an all-time record. He also became just the second player in NFL history, alongside Terrell Davis, to rush for 400+ yards and five touchdowns in a single postseason.

Eagles’ Gamble Pays Off

For a franchise long reluctant to spend big on running backs, the Eagles’ $26 million guaranteed investment in Barkley paid off in record-breaking fashion. The dynamic playmaker delivered jaw-dropping moments, including a backward hurdle so unprecedented that Madden had to update its game to replicate the move.

“It’s better in person than it is in Madden,” Barkley joked. “It’s everything you dream of.”

There was nothing virtual about the Eagles’ championship run.

From New York Heartbreak to Philly Glory

Barkley’s journey to this moment wasn’t easy.

His departure from the New York Giants was one of the biggest storylines of the offseason, documented on “Hard Knocks.” In a pivotal moment, Giants general manager Joe Schoen told Barkley that New York wouldn’t offer him a contract or even use the franchise tag, setting him loose on the free-agent market.

That decision led Barkley straight to their NFC East rival.

“I’ll have a tough time sleeping if Saquon goes to Philadelphia,” Giants owner John Mara admitted in the documentary. “He’s the most popular player we have, by far.”

Now, after just two career playoff games in six years with the Giants, Barkley delivered one of the greatest debut seasons in Philadelphia sports history—on perhaps the best Eagles team ever.

A Record That Almost Didn’t Happen

Had the Eagles played Barkley in Week 18, he might have broken Eric Dickerson’s all-time single-season rushing record (2,105 yards, 1984). Instead, Philadelphia rested him for the playoffs, leaving him 101 yards shy of history.

But in the Super Bowl, there were no rest days—only a record-breaking performance that sealed his legacy.

Now, no running back has ever rushed for more yards in a single season (including playoffs).

Saquon Barkley: Champion. Record-breaker. Eagles legend.

Highlights from the 2025 NFL Honors: Josh Allen Wins MVP in a Rare Turn of Events

For the past 11 seasons, the Associated Press (AP) First-Team All-Pro quarterback has typically gone on to win the NFL’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. However, this year broke the trend.

In a surprising twist, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen narrowly edged out Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson for the 2025 NFL MVP, despite Jackson being named the All-Pro First-Team QB just weeks prior.

This marks only the third time since the AP began awarding MVPs in 1961 that a player won the MVP without being a First-Team All-Pro.

Breaking Down the MVP Race

The All-Pro Votes: Jackson Had the Edge

Lamar Jackson appeared to be the front-runner after securing the majority of first-team All-Pro votes:

Jackson – 30 first-place votes, 19 second-place votes

Allen – 18 first-place votes, 24 second-place votes

Joe Burrow (CIN) – 2 first-place votes, 9 second-place votes

At this point, history suggested Jackson had the inside track to the MVP. But then the MVP voting told a different story.

What Changed in the MVP Voting?

The MVP race took a shift as several voters weighed their choices differently:

Jackson and Allen finished 1st and 2nd on 48 of 50 ballots (Burrow and Saquon Barkley each received a single second-place vote).

However, Allen gained 9 more first-place votes than in the All-Pro voting, while Jackson lost 7.

Final point totals for the MVP:

Josh Allen – 383 points

Lamar Jackson – 362 points

(Scoring system: 10 points for 1st place, 5 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd, 2 for 4th, and 1 for 5th).

This subtle but crucial shift propelled Allen to victory.

Did Offensive Player of the Year (OPOY) Play a Role?

While MVP traditionally favors quarterbacks, the Offensive Player of the Year (OPOY) award often goes to other skill positions. This year, Saquon Barkley took home the award, but Jackson finished second—well ahead of Allen.

OPOY Voting:

Saquon Barkley – Winner

Lamar Jackson – 2nd place (12 first-place votes)

Josh Allen – 6th place (1 first-place vote)

Interestingly, nine voters who picked Jackson as OPOY still voted Allen as MVP, helping shift the final result.

Jackson became the first player to finish 2nd in both MVP and OPOY since Drew Brees in 2018.

Has This Ever Happened Before?

Only two other times in NFL history has a player won MVP after not being a First-Team All-Pro:

2003 – Steve McNair (MVP) over Peyton Manning (All-Pro QB)

Manning was First-Team All-Pro but shared the MVP with McNair.

MVP voting only had first-place choices at the time, and they tied with 16 votes each.

1987 – John Elway (MVP) over Joe Montana (All-Pro QB)

Montana was First-Team All-Pro, but MVP votes were split due to Jerry Rice’s historic season (22 TDs).

Elway won MVP with 36 votes, Rice had 30, and Montana finished with 18.

Both previous instances had unique circumstances, much like this year’s close battle between Allen and Jackson.

Conclusion: A Historic MVP Race

Josh Allen’s MVP win over Lamar Jackson was a rare deviation from the usual voting patterns. The difference in how voters viewed All-Pro vs. MVP criteria, combined with Jackson’s strong push for OPOY, led to a surprising but well-earned victory for Allen.

While Jackson was arguably the most consistent player all season, it was Allen’s overall impact and perception among MVP voters that ultimately gave him the edge.

With such a close race, this will surely be a debated MVP decision for years to come.

Saquon Barkley Aims to Join Elite List of Free Agents Who Delivered Super Bowl Titles

The Philadelphia Eagles made a game-changing move by signing Saquon Barkley in the offseason, and the decision has paid off in spectacular fashion. The star running back revitalized the Eagles’ offense, helping them reach Super Bowl LVIII, where they will face the Kansas City Chiefs on February 9 in New Orleans.

Barkley’s Record-Breaking Season

Since signing a three-year, $37.75 million contract in March, Barkley has delivered one of the most dominant seasons ever by a running back.

Became the ninth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a regular season.

Set an NFL record with seven touchdown runs of at least 60 yards in the regular season and playoffs.

Needs just 30 more rushing yards to break Terrell Davis’ record of 2,476 yards (regular season and playoffs combined).

If Barkley helps lead the Eagles to victory, he will join an elite group of NFL free agents who transformed their teams and delivered Super Bowl championships. Here’s a look at some of the biggest impact signings in Super Bowl history.

Legendary Free Agents Who Helped Their Teams Win Super Bowls

Reggie White – Green Bay Packers (1993-1998)

White was the first major unrestricted free agent in NFL history, leaving the Eagles in 1993 to sign with Green Bay.

The dominant pass rusher turned the Packers into a contender, ending a 10-year playoff drought in his first season.

Helped Green Bay win Super Bowl XXXI in the 1996 season, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest defensive players ever.

Deion Sanders – San Francisco 49ers (1994) & Dallas Cowboys (1995-1999)

Signed with the 49ers in 1994 after back-to-back playoff losses to Dallas.

Won Defensive Player of the Year, recorded three pick-6s, and helped San Francisco win Super Bowl XXIX.

The following year, Dallas signed Sanders, and he immediately helped them win Super Bowl XXX, making him one of the rare players to win back-to-back titles with different teams.

Drew Brees – New Orleans Saints (2006-2020)

After an injury-plagued stint with the Chargers, Brees signed with the Saints in 2006.

Transformed the struggling franchise, leading New Orleans to the NFC Championship Game in his first season.

Delivered the Saints’ first-ever Super Bowl title in 2009, securing his place as one of the most prolific passers in NFL history.

Charles Woodson – Green Bay Packers (2006-2012)

Signed with Green Bay in 2006 after an up-and-down tenure in Oakland.

Won Defensive Player of the Year (2009) and helped the Packers win Super Bowl XLV the following season.

Played a key leadership role in the team’s defensive success despite suffering a broken collarbone in the Super Bowl.

Peyton Manning – Denver Broncos (2012-2015)

After a serious neck injury sidelined him for the 2011 season, Manning left Indianapolis to join Denver.

Won two MVP awards, led the Broncos to two AFC Championships, and capped his career with a Super Bowl 50 victory in 2015.

Retired as one of the most decorated quarterbacks in NFL history.

Tom Brady – Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2020-2022)

After winning six Super Bowls with New England, Brady parted ways with the Patriots in 2020.

Threw for 4,633 yards and 40 TDs in his first season in Tampa Bay, leading the team to its first playoff appearance in 12 years.

Won his seventh Super Bowl, defeating Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, and Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs.

Became the oldest QB to win a Super Bowl at age 43.

Will Barkley Join This Elite Group?

With one game left, Saquon Barkley has the chance to add his name to this list of legendary free agents who delivered championships. A Super Bowl win with the Eagles would cement his status as one of the most impactful free-agent signings in NFL history.

Chargers’ Cameron Dicker Makes Historic Fair-Catch Kick, First in 48 Years

In a rare and thrilling moment for football fans, Cameron Dicker of the Los Angeles Chargers made the first successful fair-catch kick in the NFL in nearly half a century. The 57-yard kick, which occurred just before halftime against the Denver Broncos, became an unlikely turning point in the game, helping propel the Chargers to a 34-27 victory.

What Is a Fair-Catch Kick?

The fair-catch kick is one of the NFL’s most obscure rules, and it rarely comes into play. The rule allows a team that has just made a fair catch to attempt a free kick for three points. In this situation, the defense must stand at least 10 yards away from the kicker, giving the kicker a chance to boot the ball through the uprights.

This unusual play is hardly ever executed because teams seldom find themselves in a position to attempt it. In fact, only five teams had tried a fair-catch kick in the 21st century, and none had succeeded since Ray Wersching made one for the San Diego Chargers back in 1976.

The Key Play

The opportunity for Dicker’s historic kick came after Denver’s Tremon Smith committed a fair-catch interference penalty just before halftime. This occurred when Los Angeles’ Derius Davis attempted to field a punt at the Chargers’ 38-yard line. Smith, who admitted to being “well aware” of the fair-catch kick rule, acknowledged that the penalty was a costly mistake.

“This is a dumb penalty,” Smith said. “The returner did a good job of selling it, even though he wasn’t going to catch the ball.”

The penalty moved the ball to the Denver 47-yard line, allowing the Chargers to attempt the rare kick with an untimed down. After taking a timeout, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh opted to go for the fair-catch kick, and Dicker nailed it through the uprights.

A Special Moment for the Chargers

Dicker’s 57-yard fair-catch kick set a new record, surpassing Paul Hornung’s 52-yard attempt for the Green Bay Packers in 1964. It was also the longest fair-catch kick in NFL history.

The Chargers’ special teams coach, Ryan Ficken, has regularly practiced the play with the team, and it paid off in this crucial moment. Dicker said, “It was fun to go out there. It was fun to be in that scenario.”

Harbaugh, who attempted the fair-catch kick during his time with the San Francisco 49ers in 2013, was thrilled to see it executed successfully. “I was really happy… we took a timeout and got things dialed in. It was our chance,” he said.

Chargers’ Comeback

Dicker’s successful kick sparked a momentum shift, as the Chargers went on to finish the game with a 24-6 run. The fair-catch kick not only provided the Chargers with three unexpected points but also helped set the tone for the team’s second-half rally.

“We talk about it every week, so it was normal for us,” Dicker said. “But looking over at [Denver’s] sideline, they were confused about what was going on.”

The Broncos’ Disappointment

Despite knowing the rule, the Denver Broncos were disappointed to be on the wrong side of history. Receiver Marvin Mims explained, “We all knew what was going to happen, and they executed it to perfection.” Broncos head coach Sean Payton also expressed his frustration with the missed opportunity, acknowledging the rarity of the play and the missed field goal chance.

“I’m disappointed,” Payton said. “The penalty put them in field goal position, so it’s disappointing.”

Looking Back at History

The most recent fair-catch kick attempt before Dicker’s was in 2019, when Joey Slye of the Carolina Panthers missed a 60-yard attempt in a London game. The last successful fair-catch kick was made by Ray Wersching in 1976 for the San Diego Chargers against Buffalo.

For Chargers players like Joey Bosa, the moment was surreal. “I was ready to get in the locker room, but I’m happy we had a shot,” Bosa said. “It was an important swing in momentum.”

In the end, Dicker’s record-setting kick not only added a historic highlight to the Chargers’ victory but also brought attention to one of the most intriguing and underused rules in football.

It was the Bucs’ franchise QB trying to set the tone as running back Bucky Irving took the handoff for a 31-yard gain. Mayfield would find tight end Cade Otton five plays later for an 8-yard touchdown.
On the play where he got hurt, Mayfield spun and ducked his way out of would-be sacks by cornerback Alontae Taylor, but he fell on his stomach after his foot was caught behind by defensive end Carl Granderson.
The NFL’s touchdown leader through the first six weeks of the season may have gotten the wind knocked out of him on that play, but he bounced back just like Tampa has all season — through injuries, losses and adversity.
Now, the Bucs (4-2) are set for a big test on “Monday Night Football” (8:15 p.m. ET, ABC/ESPN/ESPN+) when they host the Baltimore Ravens (4-2), but thus far, their calling cards have been their multiplicity on offense with coordinator Liam Coen’s constant motions and shifts, plus aggression on defense with coach Todd Bowles’ elaborate blitz packages.
On a deeper level, their identity has been their “resiliency,” according to Bowles.
While he joked Thursday about Mayfield sounding like Rocky Balboa after the QB was described as showing “tenacity” and “grit” as a scrambler, the notion was spot on. Mayfield averages 6.5 yards per carry when leaving the pocket, fifth most in the league among quarterbacks with 20 or more rushes coming into Week 7.
As a whole, Mayfield leads a group that has shown it’s been pretty tough to rattle, and the team embodies the scrappiness of their QB and the heart of their coach.
Two major hurricanes affected the Tampa Bay region in a span of 14 days, with the second one forcing a teamwide evacuation that sent 300 members of the organization and their families with 30 pets to New Orleans. Receiver Mike Evans said the Bucs were playing for something “bigger,” and, in a week where they had to practice at Tulane University, they were able to come away with a 51-27 win over the Saints.
“It was kind of weird,” left tackle Tristan Wirfs said. “I mean we found out on like Sunday night or Monday, like, ‘Yeah, we’re leaving Tuesday.’ We’re like, ‘What do you mean?’ So just that quick turnaround, like, ‘Pack your stuff up, pack your families up. We’re going.'”
WHETHER OR NOT that evacuation set the tone for a chaotic second quarter is up for debate — as some Bucs players say the Saints were provoking them — it certainly didn’t help their circumstances in a crucial game where falling to 0-2 in the NFC South would be less than ideal.
“I mean, it’s sudden change. That’s part of football, that’s part of life,” Bowles said. “Things are going to happen to you daily that you’re going to have to make adjustments to, and you’re going to have to keep your composure when you’re doing them.”
After jumping out to a 17-0 lead, things unraveled quickly. Mayfield threw three interceptions — two were tipped — and Rashid Shaheed returned a Jake Camarda punt 54 yards for a touchdown. The Bucs also racked up seven penalties in those 15 minutes, as chants of “Who dat! Who dat!” engulfed the Caesars Superdome as they headed to the locker room down 27-24.
“[Bowles] basically told us, ‘Just keep your composure. They can’t beat us,'” defensive back Tavierre Thomas said.
Mayfield added, “It comes down to guys being able to hit the reset button, knowing it’s a tight game and saying, ‘Hey, if we just do our job, we’re going to be all right.’ Having that mindset of ‘one play at a time.'”
Bowles’ demeanor resonated with his coaching staff and players, and he made technical adjustments to squeeze the pocket so quarterback Spencer Rattler could no longer escape on bootlegs.
They stopped dropping their outside linebackers into coverage. And they started running the ball more while continuing to rely on their screen game.
“I mean if you see our coach on the sideline, he’s pretty much the same the whole game,” Irving said. “It is always great to have a coach that stays calm and collected during them times.”
Cornerback Zyon McCollum, who missed a tackle on KhaDarel Hodge‘s game-winning 45-yard touchdown in overtime against the Falcons in Week 5, notched a crucial interception in the fourth quarter. Bowles had supported McCollum after the Atlanta loss, saying he played it correctly, going for the ball despite missing the tackle. His uplifting cool carried over.
“It’s everything,” McCollum said of that support. “If I don’t have my confidence, if I’m not playing confident, I’m a completely different player.”
IT’S WITH THAT same steadiness and resilience that the Bucs have managed to pull off major wins against the Washington Commanders, Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles this season, despite not being at full strength for any one of those games.
Against Washington, they were forced to rely on backup safety/nickelback Christian Izien as an outside cornerback after McCollum, Bryce Hall and Josh Hayes all exited the game with injuries. The last time Izien played outside cornerback? His sophomore year of high school. He then spent the next four games subbing for All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (foot).
They were also without starting right tackle Luke Goedeke for four games after he suffered a concussion in Week 1, with Mayfield taking five sacks against the Lions but coming away with a 20-16 win. By that game’s end, they were without defensive tackle Vita Vea, who suffered a sprained MCL, in addition to defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, their 2023 first-round draft pick, who had missed five games with a calf injury. They had to rely on backup Greg Gaines and practice squad callup C.J. They’ve gotten unexpected contributions from defensive lineman Logan Hall, who sacked Kirk Cousins twice in Week 5 and has three sacks this season after missing the opener with a foot injury.
Sean Tucker, their third-string running back whose career was stifled by a heart condition discovered at the NFL combine in 2023, had a career day against the Saints — rushing for 136 yards and a touchdown and adding 56 receiving yards and another score in his first extended action with Rachaad White out because of a foot injury.
His counterpart, Irving, a 2024 fourth-round draft pick, currently leads the team with 328 rushing yards and is averaging 5.7 yards per carry.
“You’ve got to adjust. You have to adjust,” Bowles said of injuries. “And guys make the team for a reason. You’ve got to know why they’ve made your team and put them in position to make plays. Everybody’s dealing with that and everybody’s adjusting differently. We like where we are right now.”
Bowles’ defense will be tested by the Ravens, who lead the league with 453.7 yards per game. Baltimore is the only team to score more touchdowns than the Bucs (20) on offense at 21, and Jackson has been the catalyst as he continues to make a case to repeat as the NFL’s MVP.
“First, you’ve got to pray,” pass game coordinator/inside linebackers coach Larry Foote said. “You’ve just got to pray. You’ve got to hope and you’ve got to wish. It’s going to take a group effort — even the [safeties]. Everybody is going to have to be responsible for him. At the end of the day, when he drops back and decides to run, it’s going to be a challenge. When he does get tackled, it’s a shoestring tackle — that’s when the prayers are going to be needed.”
If the Bucs can escape with a win, they would be 5-2 heading into a rematch with the Falcons (4-3) in Week 8 and a chance for redemption with first place in the division on the line.
