Kansas City Chiefs Rally Late to Beat Indianapolis Colts 23–20 in Overtime as Mahomes Sparks Crucial Comeback

The Kansas City Chiefs kept their playoff hopes intact with a dramatic 23–20 overtime win against the Indianapolis Colts, overcoming an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit. Patrick Mahomes delivered a season-best passing performance, while the Chiefs defense shut down the league’s top-rated offense in the closing minutes. The result gives Kansas City renewed momentum heading into a short week.

Chiefs Dig Themselves Out of Offensive Rut to Stay in Playoff Hunt

The Kansas City Chiefs entered Sunday’s matchup at Arrowhead Stadium needing a win to steady an inconsistent season. For three quarters, however, the reigning AFC champions appeared bound for another frustrating defeat. Their offense stalled, penalties disrupted promising drives, and early mistakes allowed the Colts to control the flow of the game.

Patrick Mahomes, who has carried the Kansas City offense through challenging stretches this year, spent much of the first half under pressure. The Colts defense limited downfield opportunities, forcing the Chiefs into long possessions that yielded only field goals. But Mahomes ultimately delivered his most productive outing of the season, throwing for 352 yards while guiding Kansas City back from an 11-point deficit.

The Chiefs defense, which has been among the team’s most reliable units in recent seasons, played a decisive role in the comeback. After struggling to contain Indianapolis early, the unit held the league’s No. 1 offense to just 255 total yards and prevented the Colts from gaining a single first down across their final four possessions.

Head coach Andy Reid credited the team’s resilience, saying the players held firm despite earlier errors. “Nobody flinched. Nobody was hanging their head. They came out and played, and they did it when it counted,” Reid said.

Indianapolis Builds Early Lead but Loses Grip in Closing Minutes

Indianapolis controlled the tempo early behind a balanced attack led by quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Jonathan Taylor. The Colts capitalized on a costly Chiefs turnover in the first quarter when rookie defensive end Laiatu Latu tipped and intercepted a pass at the Kansas City 4-yard line. Two plays later, Jones connected with Michael Pittman Jr. to give Indianapolis a 7–0 lead.

The Colts extended their advantage with another efficient drive, moving quickly downfield before Jones found tight end Drew Ogletree in the back of the end zone for a 14–3 edge. While Kansas City responded with two lengthy drives, both stalled deep in Colts territory, and the Chiefs settled for field goals rather than touchdowns.

Jonathan Taylor, who entered the game after a record-setting performance the previous week, was surprisingly underused in the second half. The Colts gradually shifted to a pass-focused approach despite holding a 20–9 lead entering the fourth quarter. Taylor finished with just 58 yards on 16 carries, well below his season average.

Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen expressed frustration after the loss, acknowledging that the offense strayed from its strengths. “Not up to our standards today,” Steichen said. “There’s a lot I wanted to get called in the pass game, but we weren’t efficient executing it, and it starts with me.”

Mahomes Orchestrates Methodical Comeback to Force Overtime

With time running low, Mahomes turned in one of his signature late-game performances. He led Kansas City on a disciplined 56-yard drive early in the fourth quarter, capped by a short touchdown run from Kareem Hunt. Mahomes then found Rashee Rice for a two-point conversion, trimming the Colts lead to 20–17 with just over eight minutes remaining.

The Chiefs defense then delivered a stretch of dominant football, forcing Indianapolis into consecutive three-and-outs. Kansas City regained possession at its own 6-yard line with 4:43 left, needing at least a field goal to extend the game. Mahomes connected with Rice for a 47-yard completion, then again on a fourth-and-three play near midfield to keep the drive alive.

Kansas City advanced to the Colts’ 2-yard line with under one minute remaining, but the offense stalled. Hunt was stopped for no gain on first down, Mahomes threw incomplete on second, and he was sacked on third. Harrison Butker converted a 25-yard field goal as time expired, sending the contest to overtime at 20–20.

Chiefs Seal Win With Strong Defensive Stand and Butker’s Fifth Field Goal

Overtime began with more defensive pressure from the Chiefs, who forced Indianapolis into yet another quick punt. With the home crowd energized, Kansas City methodically moved down the field behind completions to Rice and hard-nosed runs from Hunt. Though the Chiefs could not reach the end zone, they advanced far enough for Butker to attempt his fifth field goal of the day.

The veteran kicker delivered once again, striking a 27-yard kick to secure the 23–20 victory. The win improved Kansas City to 6–5 and restored momentum heading into its Thanksgiving Day matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.

After the game, Mahomes reflected on the narrow escape. “All five of our losses felt like this game, where there were plays we could make and we didn’t,” he said. “You can talk about it all day, but until you prove it, it doesn’t. We proved today we could make the plays.”

Colts Left Searching for Answers After Missed Opportunities

The collapse marked a missed chance for the Colts, who squandered a double-digit lead on the road. Daniel Jones finished with a season-low 181 passing yards and struggled in the second half, completing just 8 of 18 attempts. The failure to generate first downs late allowed Kansas City to control possession and ultimately the outcome.

Injury concerns also mounted. Wide receiver Ashton Dulin exited with a hamstring injury, while the Chiefs lost offensive lineman Trey Smith to an ankle problem. Tight end Noah Gray entered concussion protocol, and cornerback Chris Roland-Wallace left with a back injury.

Despite the setback, Indianapolis remains competitive in the AFC standings. But the loss underscored persistent issues in late-game execution — an area the coaching staff will need to address as the playoff race intensifies.

President Donald Trump became the first sitting U.S. president in nearly 50 years to attend a regular-season NFL game, drawing jeers from fans while participating in on-field military events. The visit, part of Trump’s series of high-profile sports appearances, took place during the Washington Commanders’ matchup with the Detroit Lions.

Trump Attends Historic NFL Game

Trump arrived in Landover, Maryland, Sunday to watch the Washington Commanders face the Detroit Lions. He joined House Speaker Mike Johnson in a stadium suite, and his appearance on the videoboard prompted loud boos from fans late in the first half. The jeering continued when the stadium announcer introduced him at halftime.

During the halftime ceremony, Trump read an oath for enlistees in an on-field military recruitment event. The crowd reaction remained mixed as he participated.

Pre-Game Remarks and Flyover

Before the game, Trump spoke briefly to reporters after landing at Joint Base Andrews. “We’re gonna have a good game. Things are going along very well. The country’s doing well. The Democrats have to open it up,” he said, referencing the ongoing government shutdown.

A pre-game flyover of Northwest Stadium marked his arrival. Trump then traveled in an armored car to the arena.

On-Field Interaction and Sports Chat

In the third quarter, Trump joined Fox broadcasters Kenny Albert and Jonathan Vilma for a lighthearted eight-minute conversation. When asked about his high school football experience at the New York Military Academy, Trump said, “I played tight end, but it was not quite football like this. It was a little bit easier. It wasn’t so tough.”

During the first quarter, Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown mimicked the “Trump dance,” which several athletes began performing last year, after scoring a touchdown. Trump left the game before its conclusion.

Presidential NFL Attendance

Only two other sitting presidents have attended an NFL regular-season game: Richard Nixon in 1969 and Jimmy Carter in 1978. Trump had previously attended a Super Bowl while in office, watching the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in February.

According to ESPN, Trump has expressed interest in naming the Commanders’ new stadium, part of a nearly $4 billion redevelopment at the former RFK Stadium site, after himself. On Sunday, he praised team owner Josh Harris and the group purchasing the franchise.

“They’re going to build a beautiful stadium. That’s what I’m involved in, we’re getting all the approvals and everything else,” Trump said.

High-Profile Sports Appearances

Trump’s attendance at the Commanders game follows other prominent sporting events, including the Ryder Cup, the Daytona 500, and the U.S. Open. “I just love it. It’s a microcosm of life,” he told Fox during Sunday’s broadcast. “It’s sort of like life — the good, the bad and the ugly.”

Military and Political Presence

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth participated in pre-game and on-field ceremonies alongside Trump. Also present were White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Education Secretary Linda McMahon, and Republican Senator Steve Daines of Montana.

Past Friction with the NFL

Trump’s first term included tension with the NFL over players kneeling during the national anthem to protest social and racial injustice, a movement started in 2016 by then-49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Trump publicly insisted that players stand for the anthem and urged team owners to consider firing those who protested.

Lions Overpower Ravens With Rushing Attack and Stifling Defense

Published: September-23-2025, 21:00, EDT

The Detroit Lions delivered a statement win on Monday night, defeating the Baltimore Ravens 38-30 with a punishing ground game and an aggressive defensive performance. Running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery combined for four touchdowns, while Detroit’s defense sacked Lamar Jackson seven times, showcasing the physical identity that has come to define head coach Dan Campbell’s tenure.

A Ground Game That Set the Tone

From the opening drive, Detroit imposed its will at the line of scrimmage. Gibbs scored on a short run to cap an early march, while Montgomery added a one-yard touchdown after an 18-play, 98-yard drive that chewed up nearly 11 minutes of clock. Montgomery later sealed the win with a 31-yard touchdown burst in the closing minutes, finishing with 151 rushing yards.

In total, the Lions outrushed the Ravens 224 yards to 85, consistently breaking through Baltimore’s depleted defensive front.

Detroit’s Defense Keeps Lamar Jackson in Check

The Lions’ defensive front applied constant pressure on Jackson, bringing him down seven times and preventing him from escaping the pocket. Despite throwing three touchdown passes, including two to tight end Mark Andrews, Jackson struggled to find rhythm in the second half.

Head coach Dan Campbell credited his defense’s discipline: “Those guys were very disciplined. They all bottled him up, they were disciplined, and guys made huge plays. And he had nowhere to go.”

Aidan Hutchinson, who led the defensive charge, highlighted the balance of coverage and pressure: “That’s what happens when good coverage marries good rush. Today was that.”

Fourth-Down Aggression Defines Detroit

True to Campbell’s style, Detroit was aggressive on fourth down, converting all three attempts. One pivotal play came late in the fourth quarter with a narrow lead, when Jared Goff connected with Amon-Ra St. Brown for 20 yards on fourth-and-2. The conversion kept the drive alive and set up Montgomery’s long touchdown run.

Earlier, the Lions used a creative gadget play on fourth-and-1 at the Baltimore 4-yard line. St. Brown took a handoff on what looked like a jet sweep before pitching to Gibbs, who scored easily. The play underscored Detroit’s confidence in taking calculated risks.

Ravens Struggle to Keep Pace

Although Baltimore’s offense showed flashes, including a 28-yard touchdown run from Derrick Henry and three scoring passes from Jackson, defensive lapses proved costly. The Ravens allowed two long touchdown drives of 98 and 96 yards, struggling to contain Detroit’s balanced attack.

Head coach John Harbaugh voiced frustration with his team’s defensive breakdowns: “The biggest problem is we didn’t play good defense. There’s nobody in that locker room that thinks that’s good enough. That’s not who we are. It’s not good enough, it’s not acceptable.”

A Rare Road Win for Detroit

The victory marked Detroit’s first-ever road win against Baltimore and snapped a five-game losing streak in the series. It also represented a stark contrast to their last meeting, when the Ravens routed the Lions 38-6 in 2023.

The Lions became the first team since 2021 to record two touchdown drives of at least 95 yards in the same game, a testament to both their execution and stamina.

Injuries and Notable Absences

Baltimore’s defense was hampered by the absence of defensive lineman Nnamdi Madubuike and pass rusher Kyle Van Noy, both sidelined by injuries. Detroit running back Sione Vaki also left the game with a groin injury.

Despite the setbacks, Detroit’s performance underscored their growing identity as a physical, disciplined team capable of competing at the highest level. After an early-season stumble, the Lions appear ready to position themselves as contenders in the NFC.

Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy Released After Texas DA Declines Domestic Violence Charges

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy was released on Saturday after the Williamson County District Attorney in Texas declined to pursue charges following his arrest on felony domestic violence allegations.

Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick confirmed to the Austin American-Statesman that his office had reviewed the case, spoke with witnesses, and decided not to accept the case at this time. He also stated that Worthy and his legal team had fully cooperated with the investigation.

The Incident and Arrest

Worthy, 22, was arrested on Friday by deputies and held at the Williamson County Jail on a charge of assault on a family or household member, specifically impeding breathing, which is commonly referred to as choking. The case, however, was marked as “dismissed/declined“ in court records later on Saturday.

The incident occurred in Williamson County, which encompasses parts of Austin, where Worthy previously played college football for the University of Texas.

Worthy’s Attorneys Respond

In a statement released after his arrest, Worthy’s attorneys, Chip Lewis and Sam Bassett, denied the charges and asserted their client’s innocence. They explained that the accusation came from a woman who had been living in Worthy’s home but had been asked to leave multiple times in the past two weeks after her infidelity was discovered. The lawyers stated:

“She has refused to vacate the residence and made a number of extortive efforts prior to resorting to this baseless allegation against Mr. Worthy.”

The attorneys also claimed the woman damaged property in the home, scratched Worthy’s face, and ripped out his hair—all of which they said had been documented with photographic evidence. Furthermore, they stated that Worthy did not want to press charges against the woman at the time of the incident.

The Chiefs Respond

The Kansas City Chiefs acknowledged the situation on Saturday and informed the Associated Press that they were still gathering information regarding the incident.

Understanding the Legal Charge

Under Texas law, the charge of impeding breathing refers to intentionally or recklessly obstructing the normal breathing or circulation of blood in another person by applying pressure to their throat, neck, or by blocking their nose or mouth.

Xavier Worthy’s Career So Far

Worthy was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 28th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft after a standout performance at the NFL Combine, where he set the record for the fastest 40-yard dash. He made an immediate impact in the league, scoring two touchdowns in his NFL debut. After a slight midseason slump, Worthy became the Chiefs’ primary wide receiver, especially as the team aimed for an unprecedented third consecutive Super Bowl title.

In total, Worthy recorded 59 receptions for 638 yards and six touchdowns during the regular season. He also contributed on the ground with 20 rushing attempts for 104 yards and three touchdowns.

His standout performance came in the Super Bowl LVIII, where he caught eight passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns in a 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. His performance was one of the few bright spots for the Chiefs in the game.

Injury to Rashee Rice and Ongoing Legal Issues

The Chiefs relied on Worthy in part due to an injury to fellow wide receiver Rashee Rice, who had been a bright star during his rookie season. Rice recorded 24 catches for 288 yards and two touchdowns in just four games before suffering a season-ending injury.

Meanwhile, Rice has also been dealing with legal issues stemming from a high-speed car crash in March 2024, which he and another individual, Theodore Knox, were involved in. The crash, which occurred in Dallas, caused a chain reaction on a highway and led to at least two civil lawsuits and criminal charges against Rice.

Rice turned himself in following the crash, and his attorney, Texas Sen. Royce West, confirmed that Rice admitted to being the driver of the Lamborghini involved in the incident. Rice also took responsibility for his actions in a social media post.

Conclusion: While Xavier Worthy is free of charges following the legal decision, his situation and that of his teammate Rashee Rice highlight ongoing challenges both on and off the field for the Chiefs. The team continues to monitor both situations as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Aaron Rodgers Becomes Fifth NFL Player to Reach 500 Regular-Season Touchdowns

Aaron Rodgers achieved a significant milestone on Sunday, becoming just the fifth player in NFL history to throw 500 regular-season touchdown passes. The moment came in the second quarter of the New York Jets’ 32-20 victory over the Miami Dolphins.

With the Jets facing first-and-goal at the Miami 5-yard line, Rodgers dropped back, bought time in the pocket by running forward, and then threw a precise pass to tight end Tyler Conklin in the end zone. The touchdown gave the Jets a 7-6 lead with 7:57 left before halftime.

“Yeah, it was good, that was good,” Rodgers said after the play. “It was kind of like old-school red-zone touchdown, like we did for so long in Green Bay. A play breaks down, move up in the pocket, guys keep working.”

Conklin handed Rodgers the ball as the team celebrated in the end zone, with the quarterback receiving hugs and high-fives from his teammates. The milestone placed Rodgers among NFL legends, joining Tom Brady (649), Drew Brees (571), Peyton Manning (539), and Brett Favre (508) as the only players to reach 500 regular-season touchdown passes.

The TD pass against Miami also marked Rodgers’ 25th touchdown pass of the season, the 14th time in his 20-year career that he’s reached that number. This tied him with Brees for the third-most seasons with 25+ touchdowns, trailing only Brady (17) and Manning (16).

Rodgers Continues to Make History

Rodgers didn’t stop at 500 touchdowns. Later in the game, he passed Matt Ryan (62,792 career passing yards) for seventh place on the NFL’s all-time passing list. He then threw his 501st touchdown on a 13-yard pass to wide receiver Allen Lazard with 59 seconds left in the first half.

Rodgers’ third touchdown pass of the game, No. 502, was another milestone. His 4-yard pass to Davante Adams marked the 83rd touchdown connection between the two, surpassing Miami’s Dan Marino and Mark Clayton for the third-most touchdowns between a quarterback and wide receiver in NFL history.

Rodgers capped the day with his 503rd touchdown, a 6-yard pass to running back Breece Hall with 2:30 remaining in the game.

Jets’ Interim Coach Praises Rodgers

Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich praised Rodgers after the game, calling him “one of the greatest that has ever played this game,” and added, “He put that on full display again.”

At 41 years old, Rodgers continues to demonstrate why he’s considered one of the best quarterbacks of all time. However, his future in the NFL remains uncertain. Despite reaching the milestone, Rodgers had a rough outing against Buffalo the previous week, throwing no touchdowns, two interceptions, and getting sacked four times. The Jets are now facing questions about his future, with general manager and head coach searches underway.

Rodgers, who has one year remaining on his contract with the Jets, has said he would prefer to return next season, but he plans to take time in the offseason to consider his playing future.

The uncertainty surrounding Rodgers’ future with the Jets adds to the speculation about whether the team will want to bring him back under the new management. The franchise may decide to go in a different direction as they undergo a rebuild.
