George Clooney Explores Fame and Family in Thought-Provoking ‘Jay Kelly’

George Clooney delivers a nuanced performance in Jay Kelly, a film that intertwines Hollywood glamour with intimate human drama. Directed by Noah Baumbach, the movie examines stardom, personal sacrifice, and the complexities of family relationships, blending surreal cinematic moments with heartfelt storytelling.

Exploring the Midlife Journey of a Movie Star

In Jay Kelly, Clooney portrays a celebrated actor navigating a midlife reflection on his career and personal life. The character, a universally admired movie star, is caught between the public persona he has crafted and private regrets he can no longer ignore.

“My life doesn’t really feel real,” Kelly confides, blurring the line between actor and role. He muses that all his memories feel like movie scenes, highlighting the introspective tone of the film. This exploration of identity sets the stage for a journey that is as much about self-discovery as it is about Hollywood’s artifice.

Confronting the Past: Relationships and Reckoning

The narrative pivots when Kelly encounters an old acting partner, played by Billy Crudup, whose character challenges Kelly on his past choices. The confrontation forces him to face uncomfortable truths: “Is there a person in there? Maybe you don’t actually exist,” Crudup’s character asks. This interaction propels Kelly toward reflection and personal growth.

Family dynamics play a critical role, with Adam Sandler and Laura Dern portraying Kelly’s long-suffering manager and publicist. Kelly’s adult daughters, portrayed by Grace Edwards and Riley Keough, confront him about the emotional distance created by his career-first lifestyle. One striking scene underscores the film’s emotional weight: “I wish you were the man I thought you were,” Kelly’s daughter tells him, encapsulating the consequences of choices made in pursuit of fame.

Blending Reality and Hollywood

Baumbach and co-writer Emily Mortimer weave cinematic references throughout the film, nodding to Alfred Hitchcock, Federico Fellini, and the Method acting tradition. Surreal imagery—such as misty forests and playful vignettes—blends seamlessly with reflections on Kelly’s personal life, creating a rich, layered viewing experience.

The film frequently references Clooney’s own career, with subtle homages to previous roles. Retrospective montages incorporate scenes reminiscent of Combat Academy and Up in the Air, blurring the lines between actor and character while emphasizing the film’s self-reflective theme.

Humor, Humanity, and Self-Awareness

While exploring serious themes of regret and familial tension, the movie balances humor and charm. Clooney’s performance captures the charisma that made him a star, while also exposing vulnerabilities. Scenes such as a comedic chase of a purse snatcher or his attempts to conceal aging highlight the character’s ego and human flaws, lending relatability beyond Hollywood storytelling.

The film avoids becoming a mere critique of celebrity culture. Instead, it positions Kelly’s experiences as universal: the missed school recitals, overtime sacrifices, and overlooked personal connections resonate with any audience familiar with balancing professional ambition and personal life.

Visual and Emotional Storytelling

Cinematography and direction enhance the film’s emotional depth. Kelly’s journey through Italy, his interactions with family, and surreal interludes emphasize introspection. The use of visual storytelling complements the narrative, reinforcing the themes of reflection, loss, and reconciliation without relying on overt exposition.

By blending humor, surrealism, and heartfelt moments, Jay Kelly offers a thoughtful examination of mortality, choices, and the passage of time. Its emotional resonance lies in portraying the cost of ambition on human relationships, making it as relevant to everyday viewers as to those fascinated by Hollywood.

Conclusion: A Timely Meditation on Life Choices

Jay Kelly succeeds in transcending its Hollywood backdrop to deliver a universally relatable story about time, family, and personal priorities. Clooney’s performance is both charming and introspective, guided by Baumbach’s sensitive direction and Mortimer’s layered script.

Netflix will release the film in theaters ahead of streaming on December 5. Rated R for language, it runs 131 minutes and earns three and a half stars out of four, offering a blend of entertainment, reflection, and cinematic artistry that speaks to both film enthusiasts and general audiences alike.

‘Him’ Fumbles a Promising Premise Despite Strong Cast and Satirical Ambitions

Published Time: 09-20-2025, 10:00 EDT

Justin Tipping’s latest horror-thriller, Him, blends American football culture with dark allegory and psychological horror. Produced by Jordan Peele, the film examines hero worship, athletic obsession, and the extremes of fandom. While the premise is intriguing, the movie struggles to sustain tension or fully explore its thematic ambitions, resulting in a repetitive and confined narrative.

Plot Overview

Him follows Cameron “Cam” Cade (Tyriq Withers), a young quarterback who idolizes Saviors star Isaiah White (Marlon Wayans). As a child, Cam witnesses White deliver a highlight-reel victory while sustaining a career-threatening injury—a moment that cements the quarterback as a hero and instills a harsh lesson in sacrifice, echoed by Cam’s father (Don Benjamin).

Years later, Cam is on the verge of entering the professional ranks. During a late-night solo practice session, he is struck by a mysterious pagan spirit-like figure emerging from the shadows, inflicting head trauma that adds new stakes to his football career.

The Saviors organization invites Cam to Isaiah’s secluded Texas desert compound for a week of intense, unorthodox training. Despite Isaiah’s legendary career, the experience quickly becomes a disorienting psychodrama, pushing Cam to physical and psychological extremes. Surreal visuals, hallucinatory editing, and grisly drills—ranging from blood transfusions to serum injections—turn this “training camp” into an allegorical trial of endurance.

Themes and Ambitions

At its core, Him seeks to explore the cult-like devotion surrounding football and the hero worship of quarterbacks. Isaiah White represents the ultimate modern gladiator, with Cam’s journey symbolizing the pressures placed on young athletes striving to achieve greatness.

The film attempts to blend horror and satire, reflecting Jordan Peele’s signature style. Yet, the execution falls short. While the movie establishes an intense, almost ritualistic environment, it rarely ventures beyond the confines of Isaiah’s Brutalist estate, missing the opportunity to depict the broader spectacle of football culture. Unlike films such as Any Given Sunday, which capture the electrifying energy of arenas and media frenzy, Him isolates its characters in a closed, surreal space.

Performances and Direction

Marlon Wayans delivers a commanding performance as Isaiah White, embodying both charisma and menace. Tyriq Withers convincingly portrays Cam’s transformation from an eager rookie to a psychologically tested contender. Supporting roles, including Tim Heidecker as Cam’s agent and Julia Fox as Isaiah’s influencer wife, provide additional texture but are limited by the story’s claustrophobic scope.

Director Justin Tipping, known for Kicks, incorporates stylistic flourishes and hallucinatory visuals that enhance the movie’s unsettling atmosphere. However, the repetitive nature of the allegorical trials and the lack of narrative expansion result in a film that feels more like a psychological experiment than a fully realized story.

Strengths

Strong central performances, particularly Wayans and Withers

Dark, satirical approach to sports hero worship

Stylistically ambitious visuals and hallucinatory editing

Weaknesses

Repetitive narrative that struggles to sustain engagement

Limited setting confines the story, reducing scope and tension

Missed opportunity to explore the broader culture of football and fandom

Allegorical elements sometimes overshadow character development

Rating and Final Thoughts

Him, a Universal Pictures release, is rated R for strong bloody violence, language, sexual content, nudity, and some drug use. With a runtime of 96 minutes, the film earns 1.5 out of 4 stars.

While the movie presents an inventive concept—melding football, horror, and psychological allegory—it ultimately fails to capitalize on its premise. Fans of dark satire and horror may find moments of intrigue, but the film’s narrow focus and repetitive storytelling limit its impact.

For viewers seeking a nuanced exploration of football culture or a fully realized horror-thriller, Him offers style but not the substance needed to score a lasting impression.

Movie Review: Thunderbolts Brings Marvel Back to Form, With Florence Pugh Stealing the Spotlight

In the ever-evolving Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), worlds are constantly colliding — but Thunderbolts stands out by offering something fresh. While the movie is far from a radical departure, it’s the most compelling Marvel film in years, bringing together superhero antics with emotional depth, and featuring Florence Pugh in a career-defining role.

Thunderbolts isn’t a co-production between Marvel and A24, but the creative influences are undeniable. Directed by Jake Schreier, who helmed A24’s Beef, and written by Joanna Calo (another Beef alum) and Marvel’s own Eric Pearson, the film brings an indie sensibility to the typical Marvel formula. The film also boasts an impressive team, including cinematographer Andrew Droz Palermo (A Ghost Story, The Green Knight), editor Harry Yoon (Minari), and a score by Son Lux (Everything Everywhere All At Once).

While Thunderbolts doesn’t dive into the full indie realm of A24’s quirky, deep storytelling, it offers a more grounded approach to the superhero genre, showing Marvel’s attempt to course-correct after a series of less-than-stellar releases. The result? Thunderbolts is the breath of fresh air Marvel needed.

At its core, Thunderbolts is about a group of MCU rejects — misfit heroes and anti-heroes who must join forces when CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) targets them for elimination. What begins as a series of isolated incidents soon unites these characters, including Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and the unexpectedly human Bob (Lewis Pullman), into an unlikely team.

It’s a dark, often gritty take on the MCU. The movie doesn’t lean on action set pieces to drive its narrative; instead, it explores themes of self-worth, guilt, and the search for meaning. These characters, unlike the typical Marvel heroes, struggle with their pasts and uncertainties, and Thunderbolts takes the time to let their emotional battles play out.

Pugh’s Yelena Belova, a former Soviet assassin, is the heart of the film. From her opening scene, standing on a skyscraper contemplating her emptiness, to her raw vulnerability throughout the film, Pugh’s performance is nothing short of captivating. She’s a character searching for purpose, her emotional weight only intensified by her turbulent past.

One of the most striking sequences features Yelena brutalizing a hallway full of guards, filmed in an overhead shot that evokes the iconic scene from Oldboy. It’s a perfect example of how the film combines stunning visuals with emotional depth.

While the action scenes are certainly thrilling, Thunderbolts isn’t your typical Marvel blockbuster. It’s a quieter, more introspective film, filled with moments that explore the characters’ inner turmoil. For instance, the final act, set not in a city under threat but in the characters’ own minds, shows Marvel experimenting with more cerebral storytelling.

This movie isn’t just about fighting bad guys; it’s about confronting personal demons. As the group grapples with their own darkest moments, including suicidal thoughts, Thunderbolts never loses its human element. Even with its superhero trappings, the film takes time to dig deep into the psychological scars of its characters.

While the movie isn’t as wild and irreverent as James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy or The Suicide Squad, it draws from that misfit energy. The team dynamic is built around a shared sense of outsider status, where bickering and personal conflict add layers to their relationships. This makes the team feel more like a dysfunctional family than a well-oiled machine of justice.

Florence Pugh, as the glue holding everything together, elevates the film. Her portrayal of Yelena has been one of the standout performances in the MCU, and in Thunderbolts, she commands every scene she’s in. Her journey from a tortured soul to a more self-aware hero is at the heart of the film.

Thunderbolts is a refreshing departure from the usual MCU formula. It’s not just about spectacle; it’s about character, emotion, and a deeper exploration of what it means to be a hero. And while the film doesn’t stray too far from the familiar Marvel world, its focus on emotional depth, especially through Pugh’s brilliant performance, makes it one of the most engaging superhero films in recent memory.

With its darker tone and nuanced storytelling, Thunderbolts is a hopeful sign for Marvel’s future — a future where emotional truth and high-flying action can coexist.

Thunderbolts is rated R for strong violence, language, and thematic elements. It runs for 126 minutes. Three stars out of four.

Michael B. Jordan Shines in Dual Role in Sinners, a Supernatural Thriller That Confronts Art, Sacrifice, and Identity

In the world of storytelling, nothing is truly free, and many of the things we desire most—whether it’s fame, fortune, or influence—come at a cost. This universal truth is at the heart of Sinners, Ryan Coogler’s gripping new supernatural thriller. Set against the backdrop of 1932 Clarksdale, Mississippi—a town steeped in blues lore where legends like Robert Johnson are said to have made Faustian deals—Sinners explores the price of Black artistry and the sacrifices made to protect it.

Coogler’s latest film brings the iconic Michael B. Jordan to the screen in not one, but two powerhouse roles. As Smoke and Stack, twin brothers who return to Clarksdale after a shady stint in Chicago, Jordan navigates the fine line between good and evil, charm and ruthlessness, hope and despair. The brothers are flush with cash, eager to set up a juke joint—a lively, music-infused bar that’s as much a dream as it is a refuge. But the town is full of ghosts, both literal and figurative, and their plans to create a safe haven for Black culture come with dangerous, unseen forces lurking in the shadows.

Smoke, the more grounded and emotionally open of the two, and Stack, the crude but charming scoundrel, are brought to life by Jordan with remarkable depth. Their interactions are seamless, thanks to Jordan’s skillful portrayal of each brother’s distinct yet interconnected personalities. It’s a stunning dual performance that showcases his range, aided by the talented costume work of Ruth E. Carter, an Oscar-winning designer known for Black Panther.

As the brothers attempt to set up their juke joint, the seductive allure of Black culture—represented by the raw energy of the music and the community’s rich traditions—attracts a trio of demonic forces led by Remmick (played by Jack O’Connell). These demons, who are essentially vampires, seek to feed off the energy and creativity of Black people. It’s a direct metaphor for how Black culture has been historically exploited by white institutions, a theme that runs deep throughout Sinners.

But not all Black characters fall prey to the demons’ manipulations. Some, like Sammie (Miles Caton), a gifted young guitar player with an old soul, and Annie (Wunmi Mosaku), the local Hoodoo conjurer, resist the temptation to give up their souls for power or fame. The community is caught in a tense battle between preserving its artistic soul and the pull of outside, often destructive forces.

Coogler, who has consistently defied expectations in Hollywood with films like Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther, takes a daring creative leap with Sinners. This film is a far cry from the corporate-driven franchises that have defined his more recent work. Instead, Sinners is a dense, multilayered exploration of identity, art, and survival in a world that too often seeks to commodify both.

In many ways, Sinners is Coogler’s answer to the question fans have been asking since his early days in Hollywood: What new stories does a visionary like him have to tell, beyond the confines of blockbuster franchises? The film’s richly layered script touches on themes of spirituality, colorism, the lingering effects of Jim Crow, and the complexities of Blackness in both historical and contemporary contexts.

At its core, Sinners is a meditation on what it costs to be a Black artist in a world that often demands the very soul of those it seeks to consume. The characters in Sinners are forced to navigate this existential bargain, constantly bargaining with forces—both literal and metaphorical—that want to take from them what makes them unique. It’s a struggle that mirrors Coogler’s own journey in Hollywood, where achieving success can come at a personal cost, and staying true to one’s artistic vision often requires sacrifice.

As Coogler has said in interviews, “I got scared that I would look up and be 50 and would still be in that situation. And by then, I might not have anything to say.” With Sinners, Coogler offers a powerful and personal statement on the value of creative freedom, of resisting the corporate machine, and of the price that comes with making meaningful art in an industry that often demands compromise.

With its dark, supernatural themes, explosive performances, and thought-provoking narrative, Sinners is a film that demands to be seen on the big screen. It’s a thrilling ride that blends genres, explores cultural history, and tackles contemporary issues with nuance and sensitivity. For fans of Coogler and Jordan, it’s an unforgettable experience that solidifies their place as two of Hollywood’s most formidable talents. And for those looking for a film that doesn’t just entertain but challenges and provokes, Sinners is a bold and timely addition to the cinematic landscape.

Disney’s Lilo & Stitch Trailer Reveals Too Many Live-Action Characters – And It’s a Problem

Disney has finally released the first full trailer for its live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, and while fans were eager to see how the beloved alien characters would translate into the new format, some of the reveals have sparked controversy.

Not long ago, Polygon’s Petrana Radulovic urged Disney to showcase more than just Stitch in its promotional materials. Now that the trailer has dropped, the results are raising eyebrows—especially regarding Jumba and Pleakley.

One of the biggest appeals of the original animated film was its bold, cartoony alien designs. Fans were excited to see how Jumba, Pleakley, and Gantu would be reimagined in a photorealistic style. Instead, Disney took a different route—one that feels like a missed opportunity.

The new trailer reveals that instead of going full CGI or using prosthetics and animatronics, Jumba and Pleakley will be played by Zach Galifianakis and Billy Magnussen—and justified through hologram technology.

And to that, I say: Boring.

The charm of Jumba and Pleakley in the animated classic wasn’t just about their quirky personalities—it was about their weird, exaggerated appearances and how they attempted to “blend in” by wearing Hawaiian shirts and bucket hats.

This visual gag had a deeper subtext:

The aliens weren’t just outsiders in their mannerisms and actions, but also in their physicality.

Their disguises mirrored how tourists stand out when they visit unfamiliar cultures—an underlying theme in the original film.

By making them look too human with hologram tech, the film loses this layer of storytelling.

Disney has already proven it can bring non-human characters to life convincingly:

They made two photorealistic Lion King movies without any human characters.

Films like The Mandalorian have successfully blended practical effects, animatronics, and CGI for alien characters.

Jumba and Pleakley didn’t need to be fully CGI—they just needed to look alien in a way that remained visually and thematically consistent with the original film.

At the end of the day, Disney’s live-action remakes continue to dominate the box office, regardless of creative choices. And while Galifianakis and Magnussen are undoubtedly talented actors, they shouldn’t have to carry the weirdness of Jumba and Pleakley without proper visual support.

If we must have a live-action Lilo & Stitch, it deserves to be as weird and wonderful as the original—including its alien uncles.
