TUCSON, Ariz (Journos News) – The search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of television journalist Savannah Guthrie, has entered a new phase after the family announced a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to her recovery. The announcement comes weeks after authorities said she was believed to have been abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona.

In a video posted to Instagram, Savannah Guthrie said the reward was offered following consultation with law enforcement. The move underscores the family’s growing urgency as investigators continue to examine evidence and sift through thousands of tips in a case that has drawn national attention.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen on January 31 after having dinner at the home of another daughter, Annie. When she failed to attend church the following morning — an unusual absence, according to family members — relatives checked on her and contacted emergency services around midday on February 1.

$1 Million Reward Announced

In her message, Savannah Guthrie said the family is offering a reward of up to $1 million for information that leads to her mother’s recovery. She urged anyone with knowledge of the case to contact the FBI tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324), noting that callers may remain anonymous.

The reward can be divided among multiple individuals if more than one person provides credible information. Guthrie said the family had previously been advised not to publicize a reward so as not to overwhelm investigators, who have already received tens of thousands of calls. The decision to proceed was made after further consultation with authorities.

Alongside the reward announcement, the family pledged a $500,000 donation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to support other families facing similar circumstances.

Investigation Focuses on Surveillance Footage

Law enforcement officials have said Nancy Guthrie is believed to have been abducted from her Tucson residence in the middle of the night on February 1. Authorities have not publicly identified a suspect or person of interest.

Investigators have released images captured by a Nest doorbell camera showing a masked individual on the front steps of the home. The footage has become central to the investigation, with authorities working to identify the clothing and other items visible in the video.

A source familiar with the case confirmed that one of the images released by the FBI was taken on a different date than others previously made public. That detail has prompted speculation that the individual may have scouted the property in advance. However, Chris Nanos, the sheriff of Pima County, has cautioned against drawing firm conclusions about the timeline, describing some reporting on the image dates as speculative.

Officials have not disclosed whether there were signs of forced entry or whether any items were taken from the home. Authorities have also not publicly confirmed whether Nancy Guthrie was targeted or whether investigators are considering other possible scenarios.

Family Balances Hope and Uncertainty

In her video, Savannah Guthrie expressed both hope and acknowledgment of uncertainty. She said the family continues to believe her mother could return home but also recognized what she described as “a grim possibility.”

The emotional appeal reflects the prolonged uncertainty facing the family. While investigators continue to analyze digital evidence and incoming tips, no arrests have been announced and no suspect has been named publicly.

Savannah Guthrie, a co-anchor of NBC’s “Today” program, has largely kept the investigation’s details in the hands of law enforcement. Her public statements have focused on encouraging information-sharing and thanking supporters for prayers and assistance.

The case has attracted widespread attention due to her public profile, but law enforcement officials have stressed that the investigative process follows standard procedures. Authorities continue to review surveillance footage, forensic evidence and tips from the public.

Community and National Response

The reward announcement is among the largest publicly disclosed family-funded offers in a recent missing persons case in Arizona. Large rewards are sometimes used to incentivize new leads in complex investigations, particularly when early efforts have not yielded definitive results.

Law enforcement agencies often caution that rewards can generate a surge of tips, many of which may not be relevant. Investigators typically prioritize credible information that can be corroborated by physical evidence or independent testimony.

Officials have reiterated that anyone with information — no matter how minor it may seem — should contact the FBI rather than approach the family directly.

As the search continues, the case remains active. Authorities have not indicated a timeline for further updates.

The family has said it remains in close contact with investigators and continues to cooperate fully. For now, Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance stands as an unresolved case, with law enforcement urging patience as evidence is processed and leads are examined.

Remains Believed to Be Travis Decker Found in Washington Mountains After Months-Long Search Linked to Deaths of His Three Daughters

Published Time: 09-20-2025, 14:30 EDT

The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office announced this week that human remains believed to belong to 32-year-old Travis Decker, a former U.S. Army soldier wanted in connection with the deaths of his three daughters, were located in a remote mountain area of Washington state.

Decker had been the subject of an intense manhunt since June, after authorities discovered his daughters’ bodies at a campground in central Washington. Officials say DNA testing is underway to confirm the identity of the remains.

Concerns About Decker’s Mental Health Raised Before the Case

Court records show that Decker’s ex-wife had expressed growing concerns about his stability prior to the tragedy. In a petition filed last year, she sought to restrict his overnight visits with the children, citing worsening mental health struggles and increasingly erratic behavior.

Decker, who served eight years as an Army infantryman before leaving the service in 2021, was reportedly living out of his truck at times. His ex-wife described him as “unstable” and feared that his condition posed risks to their daughters.

Discovery of the Girls’ Bodies in Central Washington

Authorities began searching for Decker and his daughters after he failed to return them to their mother following a scheduled visit in early June. On June 2, a sheriff’s deputy discovered Decker’s truck at a campground near Leavenworth, about 120 miles east of Seattle.

Inside, officers found the bodies of Paityn Decker, 9, Evelyn Decker, 8, and Olivia Decker, 5. Autopsy results later confirmed that the children died from suffocation, according to the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office.

The discovery shocked the community and prompted a large-scale search for Decker across rugged wilderness areas.

Massive Search Effort Across Rugged Terrain

Following the grim discovery, more than 100 personnel from state and federal agencies joined the search for Decker. Authorities scoured hundreds of square miles of mountainous terrain, including heavily forested and remote areas known for difficult access.

Officials said Decker’s Army background complicated the search. His training in survival, navigation, and backwoods living made him capable of evading detection for extended periods. At one point, hikers reported a possible sighting near a remote alpine lake, but the lead did not result in his capture.

The Sheriff’s Office acknowledged that the search required extensive resources, including ground teams, drones, and air support, as they combed the steep and challenging environment.

Remains Located Near Grindstone Mountain

This week, investigators reported that remains were found in a wooded area near Grindstone Mountain, not far from the original campground where the girls’ bodies were located. Officials have not disclosed when the remains were first discovered but said preliminary findings suggest they belong to Decker.

DNA analysis is currently being conducted to confirm the identity. “We are awaiting final results, but early indications strongly point to Mr. Decker,” the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office stated on Friday.

Community Response and Ongoing Investigation

The deaths of the three sisters have left a lasting impact on the community of Leavenworth and surrounding areas. Vigils and memorials were held in their memory earlier this summer, with local residents expressing grief and shock over the tragedy.

The sheriff’s office emphasized that while the discovery of the remains may provide closure, the investigation remains ongoing. Officials are working to piece together Decker’s final movements and determine how he ended up in the wooded area near Grindstone Mountain.

The case has also renewed conversations about mental health support for veterans, parental custody concerns, and the challenges of balancing public safety with family law disputes.

What Comes Next

Authorities expect DNA test results in the coming weeks, which should formally confirm whether the remains belong to Decker. If confirmed, the months-long search will officially conclude, closing a chapter in one of Washington’s most disturbing recent cases.

Until then, law enforcement and the community continue to await answers while remembering the lives of Paityn, Evelyn, and Olivia Decker.

Barry Morphew Rearrested for Murder of Wife Suzanne, Years After Her Remains Were Found

DENVER — Nearly four years after Suzanne Morphew vanished on Mother’s Day 2020, her husband, Barry Morphew, has been arrested again — this time on a new first-degree murder charge following the discovery of her remains last year.

Authorities arrested Morphew on Friday in Arizona, days after a Colorado grand jury returned a fresh indictment. He’s being held on a $3 million cash-only bond, with prosecutors working to return him to Colorado.

Suzanne’s disappearance captured national attention after she went missing near Salida, Colorado, leaving behind only a mountain bike and helmet found in different locations — with no signs of a crash. For years, questions swirled, suspicions mounted, and court battles raged. Now, with her body finally recovered and new forensic evidence in hand, prosecutors say they’re ready to try again.

“We have worked very hard to move forward in this case,” said District Attorney Anne Kelly. “We never gave up on getting justice for Suzanne.”

Suzanne’s Remains Found — and a Disturbing Drug Discovery

In September 2023, agents with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation found Suzanne’s skeletal remains in a shallow grave near Moffat, a remote area roughly 40 miles south of the Morphews’ home. Her bones were severely bleached — likely by sun exposure — and a port used for chemotherapy treatment suggested the remains were hers.

More disturbingly, toxicology testing revealed something unexpected: traces of a powerful sedative cocktail known as BAM, a tranquilizer typically used for wildlife. Forensic experts found all three components of the drug — butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine — in her bones, and ruled out contamination after death.

A forensic anthropologist theorized that Suzanne’s body may have decomposed elsewhere before being moved, adding to the mystery.

The final autopsy classified her death as homicide by unspecified means, with drug-induced intoxication suspected.

Barry Morphew and the Tranquilizer Connection

According to the indictment, Barry Morphew had access to BAM — and was the only private individual in that area of Colorado documented to possess it.

As a former deer farmer in Indiana, Morphew had filled multiple BAM prescriptions before the couple relocated to Colorado in 2018. In that part of the state, only wildlife officials were authorized to have the drug. None reported any missing supplies.

“Ultimately, the prescription records show that when Suzanne Morphew disappeared, only one private citizen living in that entire area of the state had access to BAM: Barry Morphew,” prosecutors stated.

Investigators also found a tranquilizer gun and related gear in the Morphews’ home.

A Troubled History: Charges Dropped, Evidence Withheld

This isn’t the first time Barry Morphew has been charged in connection with Suzanne’s death.

In May 2021, he was initially arrested and charged with murder — but the case fell apart just before trial. A judge dismissed the charges after prosecutors repeatedly failed to turn over key evidence, including DNA from an unidentified male found in Suzanne’s SUV. Some of that evidence could have supported Morphew’s defense.

The judge allowed for charges to be refiled later. Prosecutors claimed at the time they needed more time to locate Suzanne’s body.

Since then, Barry Morphew filed a $15 million lawsuit, accusing investigators and prosecutors of violating his constitutional rights. He also sought disciplinary action against the original legal team for allegedly withholding evidence.

Iris Eytan, Morphew’s former defense attorney, said prosecutors “fumbled” the case. “Not only is he a loving father,” she told AP, “but he was a loving husband.”

A Plea, a Disappearance, and a Tangled Timeline

Suzanne Morphew, a 49-year-old mother of two, vanished on Mother’s Day 2020. Her bike was found near their home in Chaffee County, and her helmet was discovered separately — both placed in ways that raised suspicions of staging.

One week later, Barry posted a video on Facebook, tearfully pleading for her return:

“No questions asked. However much they want, I will do whatever it takes to get you back.”

But investigators soon found inconsistencies. Barry, an avid hunter, originally said he drove straight to work that morning. Later, he admitted detouring through the area where Suzanne’s helmet was discovered — allegedly because he saw an elk cross the road.

The arrest affidavit also revealed that Suzanne had allegedly planned to leave her husband. Prosecutors pointed to erratic statements and behavioral red flags in the months leading up to her disappearance.

Legal Fallout: A Disbarred Prosecutor and Renewed Scrutiny

The first attempt to prosecute Barry Morphew had long-lasting consequences.

Linda Stanley, the former district attorney who led the initial case, was later disbarred, in part due to her mishandling of the investigation. A state panel cited her for making inappropriate public comments and for poor case management that undermined the trial.

Now, with a new district attorney and the discovery of Suzanne’s remains, prosecutors are moving forward once more — hoping this time the evidence will stick.

Barry Morphew continues to insist he is innocent. His current attorney, David Beller, blasted the new indictment, accusing prosecutors of bias.

“Yet again, the government allows their predetermined conclusion to lead their search for evidence,” Beller said. “Barry maintains his innocence. The case has not changed — and the outcome will not either.”

Mass graves are being uncovered across Syria, shedding light on the scale of atrocities committed under the brutal regime of ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad.

More than two weeks after Assad’s regime collapsed and he fled the country, countless Syrian families remain in the dark about the fate of their missing loved ones, many of whom were detained by Assad’s notorious secret police.

The Scale of the Atrocity

According to Mouaz Moustafa, executive director of the US-based advocacy group Syrian Emergency Task Force (SETF), hundreds of thousands of bodies may be buried in mass graves east of Damascus.

Speaking to CNN, Moustafa said he was finally able to visit suspected burial sites after years of work.

One such site lies in Qutayfah, about 45 kilometers (28 miles) northeast of Damascus. The area is marked by massive trenches:

Depth: 6-7 meters (19-23 feet)

Width: 3-4 meters

Length: 50-150 meters

Gravediggers who worked at the site revealed horrific details. Between 2012 and 2018, four tractor-trailers, each carrying over 150 bodies, allegedly arrived twice a week. This chilling pattern amounts to hundreds of thousands of victims.

Moustafa recounted how workers were forced by intelligence officers to flatten and compress the bodies using bulldozers to make room for new arrivals.

New Discoveries in Southern Syria

On Monday, reports emerged of a new mass grave north of Izraa in Daraa governorate, southern Syria. Videos published by Agence France-Presse show men digging through the soil, pulling up bones, and unearthing rows of bodies.

Another clip shows a bulldozer carefully uncovering layers of earth while two rows of covered bodies lie on the ground.

The Missing: A National Tragedy

An estimated 150,000 Syrians are still unaccounted for, according to the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP). Many were detained, kidnapped, or killed by Assad’s regime or affiliated groups. CNN, however, could not independently verify this figure.

The ICMP highlighted previous accounts, including that of a man dubbed “The Gravedigger,” who testified in a German court in 2020. He described how Assad’s regime forced him to bury hundreds of bodies in mass graves.

Mass Grave Sites: Bodies transported from detention centers were buried in areas like Qutayfah (north of Damascus) and al-Najha (south of Damascus).

Harrowing Details: Each truck reportedly carried 300-700 corpses. Victims were marked with numbers on their foreheads or chests, exhibiting clear signs of torture and mutilation.

Calls for Justice and Accountability

Moustafa emphasized that there are at least eight known mass grave sites in Syria and urged international experts to assist with exhumations and identifying the bodies.

Jenifer Fenton, spokesperson for the UN special envoy to Syria, stressed the importance of preserving documentation for detention centers and mass graves.

“We must prioritize accounting for the missing and ensuring families receive the clarity and recognition they desperately need,” Fenton said during a recent press briefing.

A Family’s Loss: Voices from Survivors

For families like Hazem Dakel from Idlib, now living in Sweden, the discovery of mass graves reopens old wounds.

Hazem shared his family’s tragedy:

His uncle, Najeeb, was arrested in 2012 and later confirmed dead.

His brother, Amer, was detained the following year and disappeared in Saydnaya Prison, notorious for torture and executions.

Former detainees reported seeing Amer in April 2015, after which he vanished. Though the regime never acknowledged his death, the family is now certain he was tortured to death.

Reflecting on Assad’s fall, Hazem expressed a mix of relief and grief:
“Yes, the regime fell after resistance and struggle, but there was sorrow – like, where are our children? They are mourning their loved ones.”

The Road Ahead

While Syrians celebrate the fall of Assad’s oppressive rule, the staggering discovery of mass graves underscores the enormous task ahead:

Identifying victims

Delivering justice

Providing closure for families

The world is now watching as Syria grapples with its past, seeking answers and accountability for the thousands who vanished during one of the darkest chapters in its history.

Rebel Discovery of Tortured Bodies in Damascus Hospital Sparks Global Outrage

Syrian rebels reported uncovering approximately 40 bodies showing signs of torture at Harasta Hospital, a military facility in a Damascus suburb. This grim discovery follows the fall of President Bashar al-Assad, who fled the country amid the rebels’ rapid advance.

Gruesome Evidence of Torture

Photos and videos released by the rebels depict bodies wrapped in blood-stained shrouds, stacked in a refrigerated room. Visible wounds, bruises, and adhesive tape bearing names and numbers were present on many bodies.

“I opened the mortuary door myself. It was a horrific sight,” said Mohammed al-Hajj, a rebel fighter. According to al-Hajj, the discovery was made following a tip from hospital staff. The rebels immediately informed their command and coordinated with the Syrian Red Crescent to transport the remains to a hospital in Damascus for identification by families.

Signs of Systematic Atrocities

It is unclear how long the bodies had been stored, but varying stages of decomposition suggest they had been there for some time. Human rights groups believe many of the victims were likely detainees from Saydnaya prison, infamous for torture and executions under Assad’s rule.

Diab Serriya, co-founder of the Association of Detainees and the Missing in Saydnaya Prison (ADMSP), stated that Harasta Hospital served as a hub for processing detainee bodies from Saydnaya and Tishreen Hospital before their transfer to mass graves.

Saydnaya: A “Human Slaughterhouse”

Saydnaya prison has long been synonymous with human rights violations. Amnesty International described it as a “human slaughterhouse,” estimating that over 30,000 detainees were killed between 2011 and 2018 through executions, torture, starvation, or lack of medical care. Recent reports indicate that at least 500 more detainees died between 2018 and 2021.

The ADMSP revealed that bodies from Saydnaya were temporarily stored in “salt chambers,” makeshift mortuaries designed to preserve corpses before burial on military grounds.

Search for Missing Detainees Ends Without Success

Simultaneously, the Syria Civil Defense, known as the White Helmets, concluded a comprehensive search of Saydnaya prison on Monday, aiming to uncover secret cells or underground areas where detainees might be held. Despite deploying specialized teams, sniffer dogs, and personnel familiar with the prison’s layout, no additional bodies or detainees were found.

“We share the profound disappointment of the families who still have no answers about their missing loved ones,” the White Helmets said in a statement.

A Legacy of Brutality

The ADMSP’s records indicate that, as of late October, approximately 4,300 detainees were held at Saydnaya, with many now presumed released following Assad’s ouster. Harrowing testimonies from former prisoners have shed light on the systemic abuse, with survivors recounting extreme torture and neglect.

Global Call for Accountability

Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the Islamist militant group instrumental in Assad’s fall, vowed to hold senior officials accountable for their roles in the regime’s torture practices. Jolani announced plans to publish the names of those responsible and offer rewards for information leading to their capture.

A Bleak Chapter in Syria’s History

The discoveries at Harasta Hospital and Saydnaya prison highlight the scale of human rights abuses under Assad’s regime. The international community has widely condemned these atrocities, with calls for justice and accountability growing louder. As Syria embarks on a fragile transition, the wounds of its brutal past remain raw, with thousands of families still searching for closure.
