Israel–Iran Conflict Enters Day 3: Death Toll Mounts as Missiles Strike Cities, Tensions Soar

The conflict between Israel and Iran escalated dramatically over the weekend, with missile exchanges continuing into a third day and casualties rising sharply on both sides. Israel targeted key military and nuclear-related sites in Tehran, while Iranian missiles landed deep inside Israeli territory, leaving at least 13 dead and many wounded.

Israel Strikes Deep into Iran

On Sunday, Israel launched a series of strikes on Iranian military infrastructure, including sites reportedly linked to Iran’s nuclear program and the Defense Ministry’s headquarters in Tehran. Iranian officials confirmed explosions in several areas of the capital, including the Vali-e Asr Square and the Niroo Havaei neighborhood, which houses the Iranian air force headquarters.

Smoke was seen rising across multiple districts in Tehran. Iranian state media reported a drone strike damaged the Tehran Police Command building, injuring several officers. Eyewitness videos and images circulating online showed buildings shaking and plumes of smoke over the city.

Iran Responds with Missile Barrage

Iran returned fire, launching missiles that bypassed Israeli air defenses and hit populated areas. The death toll in Israel rose to at least 13, including 10 killed in overnight strikes, according to Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency service. Several buildings were damaged, and Israel’s main international airport remained closed for the third day.

On the Iranian side, the country’s U.N. ambassador reported Saturday that 78 people had been killed and over 320 injured in prior Israeli strikes, but no updated figures were given on Sunday.

Fallout and Fears of a Wider War

The latest Israeli strikes reportedly killed multiple senior generals and top Iranian nuclear scientists, signaling a major escalation. President Donald Trump, in a statement, distanced the U.S. from the Israeli attacks but warned Iran not to retaliate against American interests, promising “the full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces” if it did.

Trump Says Peace Deal Is Still Possible

Despite the violence, Trump remained optimistic about diplomacy, posting on social media that “Iran and Israel should make a deal, and will make a deal.” He drew comparisons to peace efforts he said he led between India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, and Egypt and Ethiopia during his first term.

“I do a lot, and never get credit for anything, but that’s OK, the PEOPLE understand,” he wrote. “MAKE THE MIDDLE EAST GREAT AGAIN!”

UK Issues Full Travel Warning for Israel

In response to the growing danger, the UK government updated its travel advisory Sunday, now urging citizens to avoid all travel to Israel. The country’s threat level moved from “amber” to “red,” placing it on the same alert tier as Iran.

Regional Rumors and Denials

Meanwhile, Iranian state media sparked alarm by reporting that Pakistan was preparing to send 750 non-nuclear ballistic missiles to aid Iran. But a senior official from Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry quickly denied the claim in comments to the Associated Press, saying no such plan was in motion. The Pakistani military did not comment, but the country—like neighboring India—is known for routinely test-firing missiles without disclosing exact stockpile numbers.

What’s Next?

With both sides locked into a deadly cycle of retaliation and no signs of de-escalation, fears are growing of a broader regional war that could draw in the U.S., its allies, and other regional powers. Airspace over much of the Middle East remains tense, and civilians across Iran and Israel are bracing for more violence.

World leaders are urging restraint, but on the ground, the reality is stark: both nations are bleeding, and diplomacy is on life support.

Kharkiv Endures Worst Attack of the War as Russia Unleashes New Wave of Strikes on Ukraine

Ukraine’s northeastern city of Kharkiv was rocked early Saturday by what local officials are calling the most powerful Russian assault since the full-scale invasion began, leaving at least three people dead and dozens more injured. The devastating attack followed one of Moscow’s largest aerial offensives of the war just the night before.

“Outright Terror”: Kharkiv Pummeled by Missiles, Drones, and Bombs

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov described the scene as nothing short of catastrophic. “Kharkiv is currently experiencing the most powerful attack since the start of the full-scale war,” he said via Telegram. The city, just 30 km (19 miles) from the Russian border, was hit by at least 40 explosions, with Russia launching a combination of missiles, drones, and guided bombs.

Fires broke out in multiple neighborhoods, including a multi-story apartment building in the Osnovyanskyi district, where two people were killed. A third person died after a strike on a home in the Kyivskyi district. Emergency crews scrambled to rescue survivors trapped beneath rubble.

Among the wounded were a 14-year-old girl and a 1.5-month-old baby, the latter suffering from acute stress, according to regional prosecutors.

Residents Recount Horror

Local resident Ruslana Sheveleva described how a neighboring home was struck, killing a young man instantly. “The house was hit, right where he was lying,” she said. “His mother was dug out from under the rubble. His father barely made it out alive.”

Another resident, Iryna Ivanenko, recalled a desperate attempt to save her 26-year-old daughter, who was trapped under a slab of concrete. “I tried to lift the slab, but it was impossible,” she said. Her daughter was later pulled out by firefighters.

Russia Claims Military Targets Hit — Ukraine Calls It Terror

While Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed it struck only military facilities in a “high-precision” operation, Ukraine has accused Moscow of continuing a campaign of civilian terror. More than 50 drones, four aerial bombs, and at least one missile were used in the attack, which also damaged a music school and administrative building in Kharkiv.

“Russia continues its terror against civilians,” said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, urging the international community to ramp up pressure on Moscow.

Ongoing Violence: Over 7 Dead Across Ukraine in 24 Hours

Since Friday morning, Russian strikes have reportedly killed at least seven people and injured more than 40 across Ukraine, according to figures from local authorities compiled by CNN.

Prisoner Exchange Stalls Amid New Accusations

Amid the escalating violence, tensions rose further Saturday over a planned prisoner-of-war swap and the repatriation of bodies.

Russia claimed Ukraine abruptly postponed the exchange and failed to show up at the agreed location. Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky said Moscow had already transported 1,212 frozen bodies of Ukrainian soldiers and prepared a list of 640 POWs for exchange.

But Ukraine pushed back, accusing Russia of “playing dirty games.” Its Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said the lists provided by Russia did not match agreed terms and that Ukraine had already submitted its own list of seriously wounded and ill servicemen.

Though both sides acknowledge an agreement in principle on the return of fallen soldiers, no timeline has been set.

Ukraine Downs Russian Fighter Jet

In a rare win, Ukraine’s air force claimed it shot down a Russian Su-35 fighter jet during a successful operation near the Kursk region. A Russian military blogger acknowledged the loss but said the pilot had been rescued. Moscow has not issued an official comment.

A Retaliatory Wave

The attack on Kharkiv came just a day after Russia launched a massive wave of drones and ballistic missiles across Ukraine — widely seen as a retaliation for a daring Ukrainian drone strike earlier in the week that disabled more than one-third of Russia’s strategic cruise missile carriers.

The scale and timing of the response raised concerns of further escalation. Speaking aboard Air Force One Friday, former U.S. President Donald Trump commented, “They gave Putin a reason to go in and bomb the hell out of them last night,” suggesting the Ukrainian drone attack may have provoked Russia’s fury.

Trump had reportedly spoken with President Vladimir Putin just days before the onslaught.

As the war grinds on, the latest strikes offer a stark reminder of the high human cost and the ever-present threat of escalation — with no clear end in sight.

Zelensky Slams US ‘Silence’ as Russia Launches Record-Breaking Air Assault on Ukraine

Russia unleashed its most massive aerial attack since the war began, bombarding Kyiv and multiple regions across Ukraine with missiles and drones overnight — marking the second consecutive night of heavy bombardment. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky didn’t hold back, sharply criticizing the United States for what he called a damaging “silence” amid the escalating attacks.

Deadly Strikes and Heartbreaking Losses

At least 12 people lost their lives in the recent missile and drone strikes, including three children from the same family in Ukraine’s Zhytomyr region, west of Kyiv. Ukraine’s Internal Affairs Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that the parents were hospitalized, with the mother still in critical condition. The children’s school expressed deep sorrow on Facebook, saying, “We are in pain. The whole school family… We bow our heads in sorrow.”

The attacks damaged civilian buildings in several districts of Kyiv and other cities, forcing residents to endure long hours in shelters under the continuous drone and missile onslaught.

A War That Shows No Signs of Letting Up

Ukraine’s Air Force revealed the staggering scale of the assault — 367 aerial weapons were launched overnight, including 69 missiles and nearly 300 drones targeting 22 locations. Ukrainian defenses managed to intercept most of these, shooting down 47 missiles and 266 drones.

Just last weekend, Russia set a previous record by launching 273 drones in a single night, underscoring how the Kremlin continues to ramp up its aerial campaign as diplomatic efforts falter.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described Sunday as “a difficult morning after a sleepless night,” highlighting the relentless pressure Ukrainian civilians and forces face.

Zelensky’s Call to Action: Don’t Look Away

President Zelensky took to Telegram to call out the global community, especially the US, for what he sees as a dangerous lack of response. “The world may go on vacation, but the war continues, despite weekends and weekdays. This cannot be ignored. America’s silence, and the silence of others in the world, only encourages Putin,” he said.

He urged stronger sanctions, condemning Russia’s attacks as terrorist acts that prolong the war and cost innocent lives every day.

Mixed Messages from the US

US President Donald Trump expressed frustration with Putin’s actions, saying, “We’re in the middle of talking, and he’s shooting rockets into Kyiv and other cities.” Trump acknowledged a personal connection with Putin but criticized the escalation, saying, “He’s killing a lot of people… I don’t like it at all.”

At the same time, Trump’s Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, condemned the attacks as a blatant violation of international protocols meant to protect civilians.

A Glimmer of Hope Amid the Violence: Prisoner Swap

In a rare moment of cooperation, over 600 Russian and Ukrainian prisoners were exchanged on Sunday, concluding a larger 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner swap agreed upon during talks in Istanbul last week. Videos shared by Ukrainian officials showed released Ukrainian soldiers, many with shaved heads and draped in national flags, joyfully reconnecting with loved ones.

Zelensky thanked the team behind the exchange, calling it a success. Yet, despite this humanitarian step, the violence shows no sign of easing.

Diplomatic Talks Face Harsh Reality

The Istanbul meeting came after European allies pressed Moscow with an ultimatum demanding a ceasefire or sanctions. Many observers viewed Putin’s proposal for talks as a tactic to delay and distract from the mounting pressure.

Since the talks, Russia has only intensified its bombardment. Zelensky warned that without stronger pressure from the US and Europe, the brutal attacks would continue unchecked.

Russia Reports Ukrainian Drone Attacks in Return

Meanwhile, Russia claimed to have intercepted or destroyed about 100 Ukrainian drones over its own territory, mainly in central and southern regions, including near Moscow. Reports from Russian officials noted injuries in some areas from these attacks.

What’s Next?

With the war dragging into its third year, the latest massive Russian aerial assault starkly highlights the ongoing human cost and geopolitical deadlock. As Kyiv calls for stronger international action and fresh sanctions, the world watches closely — the silence or response of global powers may shape the conflict’s next chapter.

This story will be updated as new information becomes available.

In a bold and decisive military move on Friday evening, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) deployed 15 fighter jets to strike key Houthi-controlled ports in Yemen. The airstrike targeted the crucial ports of Hodeidah and Salif, dropping a total of 35 bombs on these strategic sites.

The operation marks a significant escalation in Israel’s efforts to counter threats emanating from Yemen, where the Iran-backed Houthi militia has long been engaged in a brutal conflict and used the Red Sea ports to funnel weapons and supplies. According to an IDF source, the primary objective was to damage the Houthis’ main revenue streams and to impose what amounts to a naval blockade on the group.

Targeting the Houthis’ Lifeline: Hodeidah and Salif Ports

Hodeidah and Salif are not just ordinary ports—they serve as critical hubs through which the Houthis import military equipment and supplies, often smuggled in from outside the region. These supplies sustain the group’s ongoing insurgency and its ability to launch missile and drone attacks across the region.

Following the airstrike, the IDF announced that vessels longer than 80 meters will no longer be able to dock at these ports, effectively blocking larger shipments and cutting off a vital artery for the Houthis. This move is expected to severely restrict the group’s capacity to resupply and maintain its military operations.

The ports also play a key role in the Houthis’ financing. By damaging infrastructure and limiting the flow of goods, Israel aims to disrupt the group’s economic base, which depends heavily on trade and shipments passing through these ports.

A Response to Recent Attacks

Israel’s latest airstrike is not happening in isolation. It comes as a direct response to a surge in missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) launches targeting Israeli territory from Yemen in recent weeks. These attacks have raised alarm within Israel’s defense establishment, prompting swift and forceful retaliation.

Despite the threats, Israeli air defense systems have proven remarkably effective. The IDF reports a roughly 90% success rate in intercepting missiles fired from Yemen, thanks to advanced radar and missile defense technologies such as the Iron Dome and David’s Sling systems. Nevertheless, Israeli officials have emphasized that complacency is not an option, highlighting the ongoing need for vigilance as the threat landscape continues to shift.

Regional Implications and the Broader Conflict

The airstrike underscores the complex and volatile nature of the conflict in Yemen and its regional spillover effects. The Houthis, supported by Iran, have been engaged in a protracted war with the internationally recognized Yemeni government, backed by a Saudi-led coalition. This conflict has devastated Yemen’s civilian population and destabilized the wider region.

Israel’s intervention against Houthi infrastructure reflects growing concerns over Iran’s expanding influence across the Middle East. By targeting these supply routes, Israel aims to undercut Tehran’s proxy forces and reduce the flow of weapons that could threaten its security.

What’s Next?

While the immediate impact of the airstrike will be felt in the disruption of Houthi supply lines, the broader consequences remain to be seen. The Houthis may attempt to adapt by using smaller vessels or alternative routes, potentially escalating tensions further.

For Israel, maintaining a strong defensive posture remains a priority, with the IDF prepared to respond swiftly to any new threats. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to address the Yemeni conflict continue to face challenges amid ongoing violence and shifting alliances.

Summary

On Friday evening, 15 Israeli jets struck the Houthi-controlled ports of Hodeidah and Salif in Yemen, dropping 35 bombs.

The attack aims to impose a naval blockade by preventing vessels over 80 meters from docking, cutting off military supplies and income.

The strike was a response to recent missile and drone attacks launched from Yemen toward Israel.

Israel’s air defenses intercept about 90% of missiles from Yemen, but the threat remains significant.

The operation reflects wider regional tensions involving Iran’s influence and ongoing conflict in Yemen.

Tensions Escalate as India and Pakistan Trade Drone Strikes, Accusations, and Heavy Fire

The already fragile relationship between nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan has taken a dangerous turn, with both countries exchanging drone strikes, cross-border fire, and heated accusations following a deadly missile attack earlier this week.

Indian Drone Strikes Spark Fresh Tensions

On Thursday, Pakistan’s military reported that India launched several Israeli-made Harop attack drones, damaging military infrastructure and injuring at least four Pakistani soldiers. One drone reportedly struck a military site near Lahore, while another fell in Rawalpindi, close to the capital. Debris from a downed drone also killed a civilian in Sindh province, according to Pakistani officials.

Pakistan’s army claims to have shot down 25 of the drones. Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif said during a televised statement that “the armed forces are neutralizing them as we speak.”

Meanwhile, India’s Defense Ministry confirmed the strikes, stating its forces had targeted Pakistani air defense radars and systems at multiple locations, including Lahore.

Pakistan Accuses India of Civilian Killings; India Blames Pakistan for Terror Attack

The aerial assault came just a day after Indian missiles hit several locations inside Pakistan, killing 31 civilians, according to Islamabad. India says the missile strikes were in direct retaliation for a brutal gun attack last month in Indian-administered Kashmir, which left 26 people dead—most of them Hindu pilgrims. New Delhi accuses Pakistan of being behind the assault, an allegation Pakistan firmly denies.

In a fiery speech, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed to avenge the missile strikes, warning of a potential escalation. “We will respond at an appropriate time,” said Information Minister Attaullah Tarar.

Kashmir Once Again at the Heart of Conflict

The disputed Kashmir region has once again become the flashpoint. Both nations have traded heavy artillery fire across the Line of Control (LoC) that divides the region. Pakistan claims it has killed 40 to 50 Indian soldiers during these exchanges. India has not confirmed the figure but did report one soldier killed by shelling on Wednesday.

India also accused Pakistan of trying to hit multiple military targets using drones and missiles. In response, Pakistan denied launching any missiles toward the Indian city of Amritsar, instead claiming that an Indian drone had crashed there.

Civilians have also paid a heavy price. Indian officials say 16 civilians were killed during cross-border exchanges of fire on Wednesday. Pakistan reports six civilian deaths in similar incidents.

Families Flee Border Areas

The rising violence has forced residents along the border to flee. In Pakistan-administered Kashmir, around 2,000 villagers have left their homes. Mohammad Iftikhar, a local resident, told reporters, “I’m helplessly leaving my home for the safety of my children and wife.”

Air Travel Disrupted

Amid the rising tensions, both countries have suspended flights across key regions. Over two dozen airports in northern and western India are affected, while Pakistan has halted operations in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, and Sialkot.

The Broader Picture

This flare-up is the latest in a long history of hostilities between India and Pakistan, largely centered on the contested Kashmir region. The two countries have fought three wars since independence—two of them over Kashmir—and countless smaller conflicts.

With both governments facing intense public pressure to show strength, analysts fear that rising nationalism and military posturing could push the region dangerously close to another full-scale conflict.

Ukraine Launches Major Drone and Missile Strike on Russian Regions

Ukraine has launched a significant drone and missile strike targeting several Russian regions overnight, according to Russian officials and media. The attacks caused extensive damage, including the destruction of at least two factories and prompting the closure of schools in the major southern Russian city of Saratov.

Widespread Impact of the Attack

The Russian Telegram channel, Shot, reported that over 200 Ukrainian drones and five U.S.-made ATACMS ballistic missiles were downed by Russian defenses. Despite this, the strikes caused substantial damage in several areas.

Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of Russia’s Bryansk region in the west, confirmed that a major missile attack had been launched but did not specify which missiles were involved. While the Russian Ministry of Defense did not comment immediately, reports indicate the attack’s scale was significant, described by one source as a “massive combined strike” on Russian territory.

Damage to Key Facilities and Disruptions

In the city of Engels, which hosts a key Russian airbase for nuclear bombers, an industrial facility was reportedly damaged by a drone attack. Saratov Governor Roman Busargin confirmed this but did not provide further details.

The strike has had a direct impact on daily life in Saratov and nearby regions. Busargin announced that schools in Saratov and Engels would shift to remote classes. Additionally, Russia’s aviation watchdog imposed flight restrictions in several cities, including Kazan, Saratov, Penza, Ulyanovsk, and Nizhnekamsk.

Nizhnekamsk, located in Tatarstan, is home to the major Taneco refinery, where attack sirens were reportedly triggered, though this could not be immediately verified.

Escalation of Tensions

This strike is part of an ongoing conflict that has escalated dramatically since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. On November 21, Russia retaliated with a hypersonic missile, the “Oreshnik” (or Hazel Tree), aimed at Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin framed the missile strike as a direct response to Ukrainian strikes on Russia using U.S. and British missiles.

In the wake of these escalating attacks, Putin warned the West that Moscow could strike back, claiming the Ukraine war was evolving into a global conflict. The involvement of Western nations by supplying Ukraine with weapons has intensified tensions, with some U.S. political figures, like President-elect Donald Trump, pushing for ceasefire negotiations to end the war quickly.

A War with Far-Reaching Consequences

The war in Ukraine, which began with Russia’s invasion in 2022, has caused tens of thousands of deaths, displaced millions, and led to the most significant deterioration in relations between Russia and the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

As the conflict continues to escalate, the international community remains on edge, watching closely for any signs of further escalation or a shift in diplomatic efforts.

Russian Missile Strike on Kyiv Leaves One Dead, Several Embassies Damaged

A Russian missile barrage on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, early Friday morning has resulted in at least one death and several injuries, while also causing significant damage to multiple embassies.

The Kyiv City Military Administration confirmed the fatality and reported that 12 others were injured. Of those, five required hospitalization, while the remaining seven received treatment at the scene. The missile attack comes just one day after a provocative challenge from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who referred to Ukraine as his “duel” opponent during an end-of-year conference. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded with strong criticism, calling Putin a “dumbass” in an online statement.

Russian Missile Attack and Air Defense Response

The missile strike occurred around 7 a.m., with Russia launching five ballistic missiles at Kyiv, according to Ukraine’s Air Force Command. Despite the intensity of the attack, Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted all five missiles. Additionally, 40 drones were downed, while 20 others failed to reach their targets. However, falling debris caused injuries and damage in the city center.

In one district, an office building, road surfaces, and a gas pipeline were severely damaged, while five cars were set on fire. A separate fire broke out at a construction site in another district, according to Serhiy Popko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration.

Embassy Damage and International Reactions

Several embassies, located in the same building, were also affected by the missile barrage. The embassies of Albania, Argentina, Palestine, North Macedonia, Portugal, and Montenegro sustained significant damage, with windows and doors smashed. Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesperson for Ukraine’s foreign ministry, condemned the attack as “barbaric.”

Portugal’s embassy confirmed light damage and summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires to lodge an official protest.

Russia’s Justification and Further Developments

The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that the missile strike targeted Ukrainian military assets, including the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) command post and facilities linked to Ukraine’s missile defense systems. This action was described as retaliation for a Ukrainian attack on a chemical plant in Russia’s Rostov region earlier in the week, which used U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles.

“The strike targets were achieved. All objects were hit,” the Russian defense ministry stated in a Telegram post.

Zelensky Calls for More Sanctions

In response to the missile attack, Ukrainian President Zelensky called for additional sanctions against Russia and expressed gratitude to international partners for their continued support, including the provision of more air defense systems.

Kherson Under Heavy Shelling

Elsewhere in Ukraine, Russian shelling targeted the southern city of Kherson, killing two and injuring at least 10. The attack occurred as Russian forces attempted to advance in the region, according to local military authorities.

The ongoing conflict continues to escalate, with both sides intensifying military actions as the situation remains dire for the civilians caught in the crossfire.

Putin Threatens Kyiv Decision-Makers After Strike on Energy Grid

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a threat to target decision-making centers in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, using Russia’s new ballistic missile, the Oreshnik. This statement came just hours after Russia launched a large-scale strike on Ukraine’s energy grid overnight, which Putin described as retaliation for Ukraine’s attacks on Russian soil using U.S.-supplied Atacms missiles.

In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that any Russian attempts at “blackmail” would face a strong reply from Ukraine.

Ukraine recently used Atacms and UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles to strike inside Russia, marking the first such attacks since the invasion began in February 2022, with approval from the United States, the UK, and France.

The Russian strike was carried out over several hours, involving waves of drones and missiles hitting various locations across Ukraine. This marked the second time this month that Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has been targeted. While no casualties were reported, the attack left more than one million Ukrainians without power.

Zelensky condemned the use of cluster munitions in the attack, noting their severe risk to civilians and the challenges they present to rescue teams and repair workers. “Cluster warheads are a particularly dangerous type of weapon,” he said, adding that they significantly complicate efforts to restore vital services.

Putin confirmed that the attack involved 90 missiles and 100 drones, including the new Oreshnik ballistic missile, which he claims is “intercept-proof.” However, U.S. officials believe Russia has only a limited number of these experimental missiles and will need time to produce more.

In his nightly address, Zelensky responded to Putin’s threats, accusing the Russian president of having no interest in ending the war and attempting to force U.S. President Joe Biden to accept Russia’s terms. Zelensky also highlighted Putin’s warning that Russia would not allow Ukraine to acquire nuclear weapons, threatening to use “all means of destruction” if Ukraine ever pursued them.

This threat likely refers to recent reports suggesting that some unnamed Western officials had considered providing Ukraine with nuclear weapons, particularly before President Biden leaves office in January. Zelensky has frequently expressed frustration over the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which saw Ukraine give up its inherited nuclear weapons from the Soviet Union in exchange for security assurances that have not been upheld.

The Russian attacks caused explosions across several Ukrainian cities, including Odesa, Kharkiv, and Lutsk. Kyiv was also targeted, but Ukrainian authorities claimed to have intercepted all missiles aimed at the capital. The attack lasted nearly 10 hours, with at least 12 regions across Ukraine, including three in the west, affected. Emergency power outages were imposed in response, with over 280,000 people in the Rivne region and 523,000 in Lviv left without electricity. In Kherson, authorities warned of power outages lasting several days.

With winter approaching, Ukrainian officials are concerned that Russia will continue its assault on the energy grid. The country has already faced bitter winters during Russia’s invasion, and the current one promises to be just as harsh. Ukraine’s energy company, DTEK, reported significant damage to its thermal plants, and this attack marks the 11th major assault on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since March. Over 190 attacks have been made on energy plants since the invasion began.

Despite the destruction, Ukraine has received significant support, including up to €107 million ($89 million) worth of equipment aid from the European Commission and the U.S. to help restore power. But as temperatures drop and snow begins to fall, Ukraine braces for yet another challenging winter of war.

Ukraine Fires US-Made Long-Range Missiles Into Russia for the First Time

Ukraine has escalated its military strategy by launching U.S.-made Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) against a Russian weapons depot in Bryansk, marking the first use of these long-range weapons inside Russian territory. The strike, confirmed by two U.S. officials, signifies a turning point as the conflict reaches its 1,000th day.

A Strategic Shift

The Biden administration recently authorized Ukraine to deploy longer-range U.S. missiles against targets inside Russia, lifting a longstanding restriction aimed at minimizing escalation. The Ukrainian attack occurred just two days after the policy shift, signaling Kyiv’s eagerness to leverage this new capability.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, while neither confirming nor denying the Bryansk strike, stated during a news conference, “Ukraine has long-range capabilities. We now have ATACMS and will use them.”

Details of the Attack

Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that Ukraine fired six ATACMS missiles at 3:25 a.m. local time on Tuesday. Russian air defenses intercepted five of the missiles, while fragments from the sixth caused a fire at a military facility. No casualties or significant damage were reported.

Putin’s Response: Nuclear Doctrine Update

The attack coincided with Russian President Vladimir Putin announcing updates to Russia’s nuclear doctrine. Moscow will now treat aggression by non-nuclear states, in collaboration with nuclear powers, as a joint threat to Russia. The revised policy appears to lower the threshold for deploying nuclear weapons, a move seen as further saber-rattling.

U.S. Authorization and Global Reactions

President Biden’s decision to allow ATACMS use inside Russia reflects a calculated risk to support Ukraine amid intensified Russian offensives. However, the decision followed months of debate among American officials concerned about potential escalation and limited missile stockpiles.

Western allies remain cautious. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated opposition to supplying Taurus missiles to Ukraine, stating at the G20 summit in Brazil that such actions would be a “mistake.”

North Korea’s Involvement

Adding to the complexity, thousands of North Korean troops have reportedly been deployed to Russia’s Kursk region, a former Ukrainian counteroffensive site. U.S. officials condemned this as a “major escalation” by Moscow.

Ukraine’s Long-Range Strategy

For months, Zelensky has emphasized the importance of long-range weapons in his “Victory Plan” to reclaim Ukrainian territory. The use of ATACMS now gives Kyiv the ability to strike military targets deep within Russia, complementing its arsenal of long-range drones and domestically produced Neptune cruise missiles.

Zelensky praised the decision to supply ATACMS, stating, “Missiles will speak for themselves.”

Russia’s Response and Rhetoric

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov denounced the use of long-range U.S. missiles as a “new phase of war.” Despite Putin’s frequent nuclear threats, U.S. officials, including Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, dismissed any indications of imminent nuclear action, labeling the rhetoric as consistent with Russia’s behavior throughout the conflict.

Conclusion

As the war enters its third year, Ukraine’s use of U.S.-made ATACMS underscores a significant escalation in its defense strategy. While Kyiv gains crucial capabilities, the global community watches closely, wary of potential repercussions in this increasingly complex and dangerous conflict.

Israel Launches Air Strikes Against Iran Amid Ongoing Tensions

In the early hours of Saturday, Israel conducted a series of air strikes on Iran, responding to what the Israeli military characterized as “months of continuous attacks” from Tehran and its allied groups.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that it is executing “precise strikes on military targets” within Iran, accusing the nation of “relentlessly attacking Israel” since October 7, 2023.

The IDF’s confirmation of strikes came after Iranian state media reported multiple explosions in and around Tehran. This escalation follows Tehran’s launch of nearly 200 ballistic missiles toward Israel on October 1, which Iran claimed was retaliation for the assassination of Hamas’s political leader on its soil in July.

Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari declared that Israel has the “right and duty” to respond, asserting that its “defensive and offensive capabilities” are “fully mobilized.”

The United States, a key ally of Israel, described Saturday’s strike as an “exercise of self-defense.” A National Security Council spokesperson informed CBS that the strikes were targeted at military sites in Iran in response to Iran’s ballistic missile attack against Israel on October 1.

While the IDF largely thwarted the October 1 attacks, a few missiles managed to hit central and southern Israel. Iran justified its assault on Israel by claiming it was a response to the “violation of Iran’s sovereignty” and the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, who died in an explosion in Tehran in July, which Iranian officials attributed to Israel—though Israeli officials denied responsibility.

Iran also indicated that its missile strike was a reaction to an Israeli airstrike in Beirut that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Brigadier General Abbas Nilforoushan, the commander of the Quds Force.

This escalation occurred shortly after Israeli forces began an incursion into southern Lebanon to target what they described as “Hezbollah terror targets” in border villages that posed a threat to northern Israel.

Following the Israeli strikes on Saturday, a White House official reported that President Joe Biden “has been briefed and is closely following the developments.” However, a U.S. defense official clarified that there was no American involvement in the Israeli strikes.

Iranian state media confirmed that explosions were reported in western Tehran, with a news agency linked to the Revolutionary Guards stating that several military bases in the western and southwestern parts of the capital had been targeted. The full extent of the attacks and their specific targets remain unclear.

Despite Iranian media claims denying significant damage, the country’s aviation authority announced the cancellation of flights on all routes until further notice. Additionally, the Syrian state news agency reported that Israeli airstrikes had targeted military sites in central and southern Syria.
