F/A-18 Fighter Jet Goes Overboard on USS Harry S. Truman, Pilots Eject and Survive

Dubai, UAE – A dramatic incident unfolded Tuesday when an F/A-18 fighter jet landing on the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier in the Red Sea went overboard, causing both pilots to eject, according to a defense official who spoke with The Associated Press.

This mishap adds to a string of incidents during the Truman’s deployment, which has been crucial to the United States’ airstrike campaign against Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

Meanwhile, on the diplomatic front, U.S. President Donald Trump and Oman’s foreign minister both announced that a ceasefire had been agreed upon with the Houthis, which would see them cease targeting ships in the Red Sea corridor. However, the Houthis have not publicly acknowledged this agreement.

Landing Incident: What Went Wrong?

The fighter jet, a F/A-18 Super Hornet, was landing on the Truman after completing a mission. According to the official, the arrestment system, which helps secure planes landing on aircraft carriers by catching them with steel cables, failed during the landing. The cause of the failure remains under investigation.

The two pilots, who ejected from the aircraft just before it went overboard, were rescued by a helicopter and were reported to have sustained only minor injuries. Thankfully, no one was hurt on the flight deck.

This is not the first time the Navy has lost an F/A-18 on the Truman. In April, another F/A-18 slipped off the Truman’s hangar deck and fell into the Red Sea. Earlier, in December, the USS Gettysburg mistakenly shot down an F/A-18 fighter jet. Fortunately, the pilots involved in all these incidents survived.

A Series of Setbacks for the USS Harry S. Truman

The USS Harry S. Truman, based out of Norfolk, Virginia, has faced a series of mishaps throughout its deployment, which has been extended multiple times due to the ongoing conflict with the Houthis. The carrier has been central to U.S. operations against the rebels in Yemen.

Earlier this year, the Truman also collided with a merchant vessel near Egypt’s Port Said, adding to the list of troubles during its extended deployment. To support operations, the Truman was recently joined by the USS Carl Vinson, which is currently operating in the Arabian Sea.

Houthi Attacks on Shipping in the Red Sea

Meanwhile, the Houthis have continued their campaign of missile and drone attacks against both military and commercial vessels in the region. This is part of their broader strategy to disrupt the global shipping lanes and end Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

From November 2023 to January 2025, the Houthis targeted more than 100 merchant vessels, sinking two ships and killing four sailors. These attacks have had a significant impact on global trade, with the Red Sea corridor typically handling $1 trillion in goods annually.

After a temporary ceasefire, the Houthis resumed their attacks following a U.S. military offensive against them in mid-March. The volatile situation in the region continues to pose risks to international trade and military operations.

As the investigation into the latest mishap continues, the U.S. Navy and its allies are dealing with ongoing risks in this crucial region.

Dog Reunites with Israeli Family After 18 Months in Gaza

In a heartwarming turn of events amidst the ongoing conflict, Rachel Dancyg was reunited with her beloved dog, Billie, after 18 months of uncertainty. Billie, a 3-and-a-half-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, had gone missing during the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack that shook Israel to its core.

For Dancyg, the nightmare of that day felt endless. Her ex-husband and brother were tragically killed, and she feared her dog had met the same fate. So when a soldier called late one Tuesday night with the news that Billie had been found alive in Gaza, it was almost too incredible to grasp.

“It’s a miracle,” Dancyg said, overwhelmed with emotion. “It doesn’t make sense… People didn’t survive. How did she?”

The reunion with Billie brought a rare moment of joy to a nation grieving the horrors of war. The Hamas attack, which claimed the lives of over 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages, marked the beginning of an ongoing conflict that has seen over 51,000 Palestinian lives lost and widespread destruction in Gaza. But for Dancyg, Billie’s return offered a glimmer of hope.

The small Israeli community of Nir Oz, where Dancyg lived, was hit hard during the attack. Nearly a quarter of its 400 residents were either killed or abducted. The attack, which took hours to respond to, symbolized the country’s vulnerability, with some families even witnessing Hamas militants killing or kidnapping animals.

When Hamas militants stormed Dancyg’s home, she and her family took refuge in the safe room, holding the door shut for eight hours. But in the chaos of their escape, there was no time to search for Billie. Months went by without any sign of her. The family moved to northern Israel, still clinging to the hope that one day Billie would come home.

Then, on Tuesday night, Dancyg’s daughter received a call from a soldier who had just returned from Gaza. He told her that Billie had been found and was alive.

“I couldn’t believe it. I asked for a photo. I was really confused,” said Dancyg’s daughter, Lee Maor.

The soldier, who had found Billie in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, explained that the dog immediately approached his troops, drawn to the sound of Hebrew. The soldier, Aviad Shapira, recalled how Billie had responded to his greeting: “I said ‘shalom,’ and she jumped on me.”

Shapira suspected that Billie didn’t belong in Gaza, so he brought her to a veterinarian. A chip in Billie’s collar led them to Dancyg’s family, setting the stage for their emotional reunion.

Dancyg embraced Billie, but the reunion was bittersweet. While Billie seemed happy to be home, she appeared disoriented and had lost weight. It will take time to see how the trauma of the past 18 months has affected the dog.

In the midst of this small but powerful moment of joy, the community of Nir Oz reminded everyone of the deep wounds still left behind. A Facebook post from the kibbutz referred to Billie’s return as a “little light in a lot of sorrow,” acknowledging the ongoing grief that continues to shape their lives.

Dancyg’s ex-husband, Alex, was recovered by the army in August, and her brother, Itzhak Elgarat, was returned as part of a ceasefire deal earlier this year. Despite the painful memories, Dancyg finds some solace in Billie’s return, although the happiness is clouded by the ongoing suffering of those still held hostage in Gaza.

“I can’t get out of this trauma as long as they are there,” Dancyg said, a reminder that while her personal journey has found some closure, the pain of the larger conflict continues to weigh heavily on those affected.

US Military Secures Release of Travis Pete Timmerman from Syria, Flies Him to Jordan

The U.S. military has successfully taken custody of Travis Pete Timmerman, an American citizen who had been held in Syria, and flown him to Jordan, marking a significant step in his safe return home.

A U.S. official confirmed to ABC News that Timmerman, 29, was released from a prison near Damascus on December 9, following the fall of the Assad regime. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has been working closely with the Department of State to ensure his safe repatriation.

The handover occurred at a remote U.S. base in southeastern Syria, known as At Tanf garrison, located near the Jordanian border. According to reports, forces from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) transported Timmerman to the base, where U.S. military personnel received him. There was no direct military operation in Damascus or western Syria. After the transfer, Timmerman was flown by U.S. military helicopter to Jordan for further processing.

The news of Timmerman’s safe return comes after a video surfaced online on Thursday, showing him in Syria. He had gone missing earlier this year in Hungary, but U.S. officials were unaware he had been in Syria until recently.

Timmerman’s family, who had feared for his safety, expressed overwhelming relief upon hearing the news. His stepfather, Richard Gardiner, told ABC News that the news was “the best Christmas gift ever.”

The U.S. State Department is now leading the efforts to bring Timmerman home, with a focus on ensuring his physical and emotional well-being. A State Department official emphasized the importance of respecting his privacy as he recovers from this difficult ordeal.

The Biden administration continues to work on securing the release of other Americans held in Syria, including freelance journalist Austin Tice, who was kidnapped in 2012, in light of recent developments following the fall of the Assad regime.
