The award was presented by Public Enemy’s Chuck D at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Novoselic spoke for the band, reflecting on Nirvana’s enduring impact and remembering frontman Kurt Cobain, who died in 1994.

Nirvana’s appearance marked the latest chapter in a relationship with the VMAs that began in 1992, when the band performed at the ceremony for the first time. MTV and Paramount had announced the honor on Sept. 9, exactly 34 years after that debut.

A tribute to Kurt Cobain

Novoselic used the acceptance speech to place the award in the context of Nirvana’s original lineup and Cobain’s songwriting.

He described Cobain as one of the greatest artists of all time and said the band’s music had ultimately taken on a life beyond its creators.

Grohl also spoke about Cobain, saying there was still something missing and that he thinks about his former bandmate every day. He thanked people for continuing to pay attention to Nirvana’s music.

Cobain died in April 1994 at age 27, ending Nirvana’s original run as a band. Grohl later founded Foo Fighters, while Novoselic continued working as a musician and remained involved in occasional Nirvana-related reunions.

The videos that shaped Nirvana’s MTV legacy

The Video Vanguard Award recognizes artists whose work has made a significant contribution to music videos and visual culture.

Nirvana’s MTV legacy was built around a relatively small number of highly influential videos, including “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are,” “In Bloom” and “Heart-Shaped Box.” The band’s official website continues to feature those videos in its archive.

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” helped propel Nirvana into mainstream culture following the release of Nevermind in 1991. At the 1992 VMAs, the video won Best New Artist in a Video and Best Alternative Video.

“In Bloom” won Best Alternative Video at the 1993 VMAs, while “Heart-Shaped Box” received the same award in 1994.

Those awards came during Nirvana’s brief commercial peak, when the band helped shift mainstream rock toward the Pacific Northwest’s grunge scene.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame describes Nirvana’s 1991 album Nevermind as helping trigger a major cultural change and identifies the band’s raw, punk-influenced approach as an important part of its legacy. Nirvana was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014.

The VMAs and Nirvana’s long connection

Nirvana’s first VMA appearance in 1992 became one of the most remembered performances in the show’s history.

The band performed “Lithium” before the set descended into equipment destruction and feedback. That appearance came as Nirvana was rapidly becoming one of the most prominent alternative-rock acts in the United States.

MTV later kept Nirvana’s connection to the network alive through performances and archived music videos, including the band’s celebrated MTV Unplugged appearance.

The 2026 award therefore recognizes more than the band’s recorded music. It also acknowledges the role its visual work and performances played in MTV’s development during the early 1990s.

Paramount described the 2026 honor as coming 34 years after Nirvana first appeared on the VMAs stage and said the band had helped shape music, culture and MTV.

A reunion without a Nirvana performance

The award ceremony brought Grohl, Novoselic and Smear together publicly, but Nirvana did not perform a musical set during the presentation.

Smear had joined Nirvana on tour in 1993 and 1994 and has participated in later reunions with Grohl and Novoselic. His presence alongside the two surviving core members gave the ceremony a connection to the band’s final period before Cobain’s death.

The surviving members have reunited only periodically since Nirvana ended. They performed together at the band’s 2014 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction and have appeared for occasional special performances in the years since.

The VMAs appearance was therefore both an awards moment and a rare public gathering of musicians associated with Nirvana’s original era.

An award reflecting a short but lasting career

Nirvana released three studio albums during its original run: Bleach, Nevermind and In Utero. The band’s recording career ended after Cobain’s death, but its influence continued through reissues, archival releases, tribute performances and the work of former members.

The band remains closely identified with the early-1990s transformation of alternative rock from a largely peripheral genre into a major part of mainstream popular music. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame credits Nirvana with helping define that shift.

The Video Vanguard Award places that legacy within the specific history of music television.

For MTV, Nirvana’s importance is tied not only to the popularity of songs such as “Smells Like Teen Spirit” but also to the visual identity surrounding them and the band’s willingness to challenge the conventions of polished music television.

Three decades after Cobain’s death, the award also underscored how much of Nirvana’s cultural influence continues to be connected to images and performances first broadcast during the band’s brief period at the center of MTV’s programming.

The 2026 VMAs thus brought Nirvana back to the same institution that helped introduce the band to a global television audience in the early 1990s.
