RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Three Saudi citizens were killed and several others injured in two attacks targeting King Khalid International Airport on October 8, Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said, prompting wider aviation warnings and further flight cancellations across the region.

The attacks targeted airport facilities and an aircraft belonging to Saudi national carrier Saudia, according to the authority. Saudia identified Captain Hamoud Ali Alkalthami among those killed and confirmed that its aircraft was damaged while parked on the ground. No passengers were aboard the aircraft.

The deaths represent a new casualty toll from the October 8 attacks and should be distinguished from fatalities reported in earlier incidents at Saudi airports during the same week.

Saudi authorities report airport damage and deaths

The General Authority of Civil Aviation said the attacks caused material damage and injuries ranging from minor to severe. It did not identify those responsible in its statement.

Saudia paid tribute to Alkalthami and said it had activated emergency response procedures in coordination with the relevant authorities. The airline also confirmed that its operations at King Khalid International Airport had returned to normal by 6 p.m. on October 8.

The return to normal airport operations did not mean all airline schedules had resumed. Several international carriers continued to suspend or cancel services while assessing the security situation.

Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed responsibility for attacks on Riyadh airport. That claim remains distinct from the Saudi aviation authority’s confirmation of the casualties and damage. The authority’s statement did not independently establish responsibility for the specific attacks.

European aviation warning expands

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency expanded its advisory for Saudi airspace, citing risks from missile and drone attacks.

The agency warned of potential dangers to civilian aircraft, including misidentification, possible interception and falling debris. The expanded warning covered additional areas of Saudi airspace as regional military activity intensified.

The advisory adds a regulatory safety dimension to the disruption. Airlines must consider not only whether an airport remains operational but also whether the surrounding airspace can be used safely under prevailing conditions.

The warning does not mean every flight to Saudi Arabia has been prohibited. Its implications depend on the areas covered, the applicable risk assessment and each airline’s operational decisions.

More airlines suspend or cancel services

The latest disruptions followed earlier suspensions by Lufthansa Group, IndiGo, Air India and Akasa Air.

Flydubai cancelled flights to Riyadh and Yanbu through October 10 and suspended services to Abha through October 11, according to its announcement on October 9.

Pakistan International Airlines also temporarily suspended its Riyadh operations, citing the security situation in the Middle East. Pakistan’s aviation authorities clarified that the suspension applied to Riyadh services rather than all flights to Saudi Arabia.

The announcements demonstrate that airlines were responding individually to changing risks and operational requirements. They do not establish that every international carrier had stopped flying to the kingdom.

Passengers with bookings to Riyadh, Yanbu or Abha should check directly with their airline for cancellations, schedule changes and rebooking options before travelling to the airport.

Renewed fighting reported in Yemen

The airport attacks occurred amid renewed fighting between Houthi forces and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces.

Residents in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, reported explosions as the conflict intensified. The origin of those reported explosions was not immediately clear, and they should not automatically be attributed to a particular military operation.

The wider conflict provides important context for the aviation warnings, but individual claims about attacks, military targets and responsibility require separate verification.

The renewed fighting also raises concerns about the safety of civilian infrastructure and regional transport routes. Airports can face risks from direct attacks as well as missile interceptions, debris and uncertainty over airspace security.

Airport reopening does not end the disruption

Saudi authorities said operations at Riyadh airport had returned to normal after the attacks. However, airlines continued to make decisions based on their own security assessments and the wider regional situation.

That distinction matters for passengers: an airport can reopen while individual routes remain cancelled or suspended. Flight schedules may also change as airlines reassess airspace warnings and security developments.

The immediate questions are whether the expanded aviation warnings will prompt further route changes, how quickly affected services can resume and whether authorities can establish responsibility for the attacks.

For now, the confirmed deaths, damage to a parked aircraft and widening aviation precautions show how the conflict is affecting civilian air transport beyond the immediate site of the attacks.
