American Dual National and Father of Youngest Hostage Among Those to Be Released from Gaza on Saturday

Hamas announced on Friday that three Israeli hostages, including an American dual national and the father of the youngest hostage taken during the October 7, 2023 attack, will be released from Gaza on Saturday.

The three individuals to be freed are Keith Siegel, Yarden Bibas, and Ofer Kalderon. The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that their families had been notified of the release.

Keith Siegel, an Israeli-American citizen, was taken from his home in kibbutz Kfar Aza. His wife, Aviva, was abducted with him but was released in November 2023 during a short-lived ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

Yarden Bibas was kidnapped from kibbutz Nir Oz along with his wife, Shiri, and their two sons, Kfir and Ariel. Kfir, who was only nine months old at the time, became the youngest hostage taken during the October 7 attacks.

Ofer Kalderon, 52 at the time of his kidnapping, was seized from kibbutz Nir Oz along with his son, Erez, who was 11, and his daughter, Sahar, who was 16. Both Erez and Sahar were released during the November ceasefire.

The hostages’ release comes as part of the ongoing efforts to secure the return of captives held by Hamas.

This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Tensions between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant have been building for months, marked by disagreements and reported clashes over Israel’s war strategy.

Gallant, a seasoned military leader with experience as a navy commando and former head of Israel’s Southern Command, initially supported the military actions in Gaza after Hamas’s unprecedented October 7 attack on Israel. However, he soon began advocating for a strategy shift, urging a focus on a potential hostage release deal with Hamas and calling for a comprehensive investigation into the failures that led to the attack. Gallant’s concerns about Israel’s long-term strategy and his push for military accountability were largely dismissed by Netanyahu.

One sticking point between the two was Gallant’s disapproval of continued military exemptions for ultra-Orthodox seminary students—a policy Netanyahu supports due to his coalition’s reliance on ultra-Orthodox parties. As Gallant’s criticisms grew, so did speculation about his possible dismissal, which finally came on the day of the U.S. election. Gallant’s rapport with President Joe Biden’s administration has been stronger than Netanyahu’s, adding another layer of complexity to his ousting.

Netanyahu has appointed Israel Katz, the former foreign minister, as Gallant’s successor. Katz is aligned with Netanyahu’s hawkish approach, yet he has limited military experience, which has raised concerns domestically and internationally. As Israel continues its conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, Gallant’s dismissal removes one of the last voices willing to openly challenge Netanyahu’s approach.

Gallant’s political career may not be over. He was previously dismissed by Netanyahu in 2023 over his objections to judicial reforms, a move that led to massive protests and ultimately forced Netanyahu to reinstate him. The latest dismissal, however, underscores Netanyahu’s firm control over Israel’s government, reflecting his influence as the country’s longest-serving leader and shrewd political strategist.

“Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has dismissed Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in a dramatic move that underscores internal tensions over Israel’s war strategy and Gaza conflict. The decision to replace Gallant, a seasoned military leader, with the less-experienced Israel Katz has raised concerns at home and abroad about the direction of Israel’s military and political leadership.”

“In a significant power shift, Netanyahu has ousted Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, reflecting deep divisions over Israel’s approach to the ongoing Gaza conflict and relations with the U.S. Gallant’s dismissal signals Netanyahu’s resolve to prioritize a hardline stance, as he appoints Israel Katz, a more politically aligned ally, to lead Israel’s defense.”

“Prime Minister Netanyahu’s firing of Yoav Gallant, a key voice in Israel’s defense leadership, marks a critical moment in Israeli politics. Known for his focus on military strategy and post-war planning, Gallant’s exit leaves Israel’s hawkish administration without one of its few moderate voices, raising concerns over stability amid regional conflicts.”

“In a bold assertion of control, Netanyahu removed Defense Minister Gallant, citing ongoing disagreements over Israel’s military tactics. Gallant’s departure has sparked new debates over Netanyahu’s wartime decisions, especially as Gallant favored a focus on hostage negotiations and post-war stability in Gaza, which diverged from the prime minister’s hardline approach.”

“As Israel battles conflicts on multiple fronts, Prime Minister Netanyahu has replaced Defense Minister Gallant with loyalist Israel Katz. The decision reflects ongoing policy rifts and Netanyahu’s preference for a more unified hardline front, sparking both local and international concerns over Israel’s future direction in the Middle East.”
