Kenyan Officer Killed in Haiti Gang Ambush as Rubio Addresses Security Crisis

A Kenyan police officer serving in Haiti as part of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) was killed in a gang ambush, marking another tragic loss for the international force. The incident coincides with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s diplomatic tour of the Caribbean, where Haiti’s escalating security crisis is a primary concern.

The slain officer, Bénédict Kabiru, was initially reported missing following an ambush on two Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles on Tuesday in Pont-Sondé, a town in Haiti’s Artibonite region. The Kenya-led MSS confirmed his death, and Haiti’s Presidential Transitional Council honored his sacrifice.

“This valiant police officer, engaged alongside Haitian forces to fight insecurity, made the ultimate sacrifice for a better future for our country. His bravery and commitment will never be forgotten,” the council said in a statement.

The ambush occurred while MSS and Haitian National Police officers were attempting to retrieve an armored vehicle that had become trapped in a ditch, possibly dug by gangs. During the operation, one of the MRAPs also got stuck while the other suffered mechanical issues. As officers worked to resolve the problem, armed gang members launched a sudden attack, leading to the officer’s death.

This marks the latest Kenyan casualty since the MSS arrived in Haiti in June. Just last month, another Kenyan officer was fatally wounded in an operation in the same region. The escalating violence has raised concerns about the effectiveness and sustainability of the security mission.

Following the attack, videos allegedly showing the slain officer’s body circulated online. However, the authenticity of the footage has not been independently verified.

As the security crisis deepens, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is prioritizing Haiti in his Caribbean tour. On Wednesday, he is set to meet with Fritz Jean, president of Haiti’s Presidential Transitional Council, in Jamaica. The discussions aim to bolster regional cooperation in addressing Haiti’s security and humanitarian challenges.

The U.S. remains a key financial backer of the MSS, which has struggled to contain Haiti’s rampant gang violence. The crisis is particularly dire in Port-au-Prince, where an estimated 80% of the capital is under gang control. As security forces attempt to reclaim urban areas, gangs have expanded their operations into rural regions, particularly Artibonite, a crucial agricultural hub.

The worsening violence has triggered mass displacement, with the United Nations reporting record levels of forced migration. According to UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, nearly 23,000 people were displaced within a single week in March.

Beyond displacement, the crisis has disrupted supply chains, exacerbating food insecurity. “Almost half of the entire population – that’s 5.5 million human beings – is going hungry, one of the highest proportions in any crisis around the world,” Dujarric noted.

In a particularly gruesome episode of violence, the UN reported that at least 70 people, including women and children, were massacred by the Gran Grif gang in the same Artibonite town where Officer Kabiru was killed.

As Haiti’s security crisis spirals, the international response faces mounting challenges. The death of another Kenyan officer underscores the risks MSS personnel face, while Rubio’s diplomatic engagements highlight the urgency of finding a sustainable solution. With gangs tightening their grip and the humanitarian situation deteriorating, the international community’s next moves will be crucial in determining Haiti’s future stability.

Guatemalan and Salvadoran Forces Join Fight Against Violent Gangs in Haiti

On Friday, security forces from Guatemala and El Salvador arrived in Haiti to support a multinational mission aimed at tackling the country’s escalating gang violence, the Haitian National Police confirmed.

A formal greeting ceremony took place at the international airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, where high-ranking officials welcomed the 75 Guatemalan officers and eight Salvadoran officers. The welcoming delegation included Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council leader Leslie Voltaire, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, and the United States Ambassador to Haiti, Dennis Hankins.

The newly arrived troops are set to join the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, a U.S. and UN-backed initiative designed to work alongside Haitian police in efforts to restore security in the nation. The MSS mission was created in response to Haiti’s increasing gang violence, which has intensified since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. In addition to the gang violence, Haiti has been further weakened by natural disasters and a deepening hunger crisis.

Normil Rameau, Acting Director General of the Haitian National Police, emphasized that the success of the mission relies on cooperation between the police and the Haitian people. He stated that this collaboration remains the most effective means of restoring lasting peace and security.

The UN Security Council approved the MSS mission in 2023, following repeated calls for international aid from Haiti’s government. The United States pledged significant support, offering hundreds of millions of dollars in funding and resources.

Despite the mission’s formation, the deployment has faced significant hurdles. Although the MSS is led by hundreds of Kenyan police officers, their arrival was delayed multiple times, and they went months without pay. Despite their efforts, gang violence has persisted across Haiti, with notable incidents continuing into 2023.

In November, the U.S. civil aviation authority grounded flights to Haiti for weeks after bullets struck three U.S.-based airline jets flying over Port-au-Prince. A month earlier, gangs fired on U.S. Embassy vehicles, forcing the evacuation of 20 embassy staff members.

At Friday’s ceremony, Godfrey Otunge, Commander of the Kenyan forces within the MSS, welcomed the Guatemalan and Salvadoran officers, praising their commitment to the Haitian government. “We don’t take it for granted. We have a prime minister who is also our friend,” Otunge said, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in Haiti’s fight against gang violence.

Syrian Christians Mark a New Era with Hopeful Prayers as UN Calls for End to Sanctions

In churches across Syria, Christians gathered for the first Sunday services since the ousting of Bashar Assad, an event that marked a significant turning point in the country’s transformation. The atmosphere was filled with both optimism and emotion, as many worshippers wept with relief, while others clasped their hands in prayer for Syria’s future.

Jihad Raffoul, one of the attendees, shared his hope, saying, “They are promising us that the government will be formed soon, and, God willing, things will improve because we’ve rid ourselves of the tyrant.” Suzan Barakat echoed this sentiment, praying for “a new page in Syria’s future.”

As Syria embarks on this uncertain journey, the United Nations envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, called for an immediate end to the Western sanctions that have crippled the country’s economy and hindered reconstruction efforts. Pedersen emphasized the importance of international support to rebuild Syria and ensure a peaceful future.

Syria has endured sanctions from the U.S., European Union, and others for years due to Assad’s violent crackdown on peaceful anti-government protests in 2011, which eventually spiraled into a brutal civil war. While the recent offensive led by the rebel alliance ousted Assad and forced him into exile, the country remains heavily isolated by sanctions, which have compounded its economic struggles.

Despite the challenges, the swift downfall of Assad has sparked a sense of optimism among Syrians. However, questions about governance persist. The new transitional leadership, which includes factions like the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), remains controversial. HTS is still designated as a terrorist group by the U.S., though reports indicate that the Biden administration is reconsidering this designation.

Pedersen stressed the need for a rapid international response to support Syria’s transition. “We hope to see the sanctions lifted soon to rally international support for rebuilding Syria,” he stated.

The country’s infrastructure remains in ruins after years of conflict, and reconstruction efforts have been hindered by sanctions aimed at blocking rebuilding efforts in government-controlled areas. Pedersen met with officials from Syria’s new interim government, which was formed by the opposition forces that ousted Assad, and which is now led by HTS. The U.S. has suggested that it might lift the terrorist designation on HTS in exchange for cooperation.

At an emergency meeting in Jordan, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and representatives from the Arab League, Turkey, the EU, and the U.N. discussed Syria’s future. They agreed that the new government should uphold minority and women’s rights, prevent terrorism, ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need, and destroy any remaining Assad-era chemical weapons.

Syria’s interim government is expected to rule until March, though there is no clear plan for how a permanent administration will be established. Arab foreign ministers have advocated for U.N.-supervised elections under a new constitution approved by the Syrian people.

Pedersen underscored the need for a Syrian-led political process that includes all citizens. “We need to get the political process underway that is inclusive of all Syrians,” he said, emphasizing the need for justice and accountability for war crimes. Many families continue to search for loved ones detained by Assad’s regime.

Syria’s Christian community, which made up 10% of the population before the war, has been deeply affected by the conflict. Many Christians fled or supported Assad out of fear of Islamist insurgents. Church services were suspended in the past, but this Sunday marked a hopeful return. Ibrahim Shahin, a Catholic church supervisor, reflected on the past: “We were scared of the events taking place.” But this Sunday, church doors reopened, and the sound of bells rang through the air.

In a broader sign of Syria’s attempt to return to normalcy, schools in Damascus reopened after a long hiatus due to insurgent occupation. At Nahla Zaidan school in the Mezzah neighborhood, teachers raised the revolutionary flag, signaling a shift in the country’s political climate.

Maysoun Al-Ali, the school’s director, remarked, “Although some may still be afraid, they came to build Syria and to live the victories of this country. God willing, there will be more development, security, and reconstruction in this beloved country.”

Syria stands at a crossroads, with hopes for rebuilding its economy, infrastructure, and society, but the road ahead remains uncertain. As the country seeks a new chapter, the prayers of its people reflect a longing for peace and a better future.

Haiti Massacre: Over 180 Killed After Gang Leader Targets Voodoo Practitioners

Haiti is reeling from one of the deadliest massacres in its recent history, where over 180 people were killed in the impoverished Cité Soleil area of Port-au-Prince. The killings, which occurred on December 6 and 7, were reportedly carried out under the orders of gang leader Micanor “Mikanò” Altès, who blamed Voodoo practitioners for his child’s grave illness.

Massacre Triggered by Voodoo Accusations

According to Haiti’s National Human Rights Defense Network (RNDDH), the violence began when Micanor sought advice from a Voodoo priest (“bòkò”) about his child’s illness. The priest allegedly accused elderly residents in Wharf Jérémie of practicing witchcraft and causing the child’s condition.

“On December 6, Micanor shot and killed at least 60 elderly individuals,” the RNDDH reported. “The following day, he and his group used machetes and knives to kill 50 more. Despite the killings, the child passed away.”

Haiti’s Committee for Peace and Development (CPD) corroborated the targeting of elderly people and Voodoo practitioners. The bodies of victims, many of them mutilated, were left in the streets as a grim reminder of the attack.

Death Toll and Growing Violence

The United Nations confirmed that at least 184 people were killed in the massacre, including 127 elderly men and women. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk described the killings as “staggering,” noting that over 5,000 Haitians have died in gang-related violence this year alone.

Wharf Jérémie remains under what RNDDH describes as an “informal siege,” with gang violence continuing to target elderly residents and Voodoo adherents.

Government Pledges Action

Haiti’s transitional government has vowed to hold the perpetrators accountable. “A red line has been crossed,” read a statement from the Prime Minister’s office. “The State will mobilize all its forces to track down and annihilate these criminals.”

This massacre is the latest in a year-long wave of violence orchestrated by the Viv Ansamn gang alliance. Gangs have been attacking state institutions, including prisons, police stations, and the international airport, displacing hundreds of thousands of residents across Port-au-Prince.

International Response and Call for Action

The escalating chaos has drawn international attention, leading to the deployment of a multinational policing force (MSS) earlier this year. However, the force has struggled to contain the violence. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged member states to increase support for the mission and called for an immediate investigation into the massacre.

Haiti’s National Police insisted that its joint operations with the MSS remain effective, dismissing rumors of discord between the two forces.

A Nation in Crisis

As Haiti grapples with the aftermath of this brutal massacre, the humanitarian and security situation in the country continues to deteriorate. The massacre underscores the deepening gang violence and the challenges faced by local and international forces in restoring stability to the embattled Caribbean nation.

Israeli Cabinet Approves U.S.-Backed Ceasefire with Hezbollah

The Israeli Cabinet has approved a U.S.-mediated ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah following extended negotiations. The decision was finalized late Tuesday night, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presenting the proposal to the Cabinet. The agreement passed with a 10-1 vote, with far-right minister Ben Gvir opposing.

The ceasefire officially took effect at 4 a.m. Wednesday, local time, just hours after Israel announced the deal. U.S. President Joe Biden later confirmed the agreement at the White House, emphasizing the next steps:

Deployment of the Lebanese Army: Over the next 60 days, Lebanese security forces will take control of southern Lebanon, areas currently under Hezbollah’s authority.

Israeli Withdrawal: Israeli forces will simultaneously withdraw from these regions to allow displaced civilians to return home on both sides of the border.

Despite the agreement, tensions persisted. Bombing in Beirut continued late into the night, even after Biden’s announcement.

Statements from Leadership

Netanyahu credited U.S. involvement in brokering the deal but underscored Israel’s readiness to act against threats. “Israel reserves its right to respond to any threat to its security,” his office stated.

Hezbollah has not formally responded to the ceasefire, and Netanyahu acknowledged its actions would be critical to the agreement’s success. “The duration of this ceasefire depends on developments in Lebanon,” he said. “If Hezbollah violates the agreement, Israel will respond decisively.”

President Biden echoed these sentiments, stressing that Israel retains the right to self-defense under international law. He warned that any violation of the ceasefire, particularly threats from Hezbollah, would prompt a strong response.

Recent Conflict and Broader Implications

The ceasefire marks a significant moment in the ongoing conflict, which escalated in October when Israel invaded southern Lebanon in response to Hezbollah aggression. As recently as Sunday, Hezbollah launched a major attack, firing over 250 rockets into Israel.

Netanyahu highlighted military achievements during the conflict, including the elimination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and the destruction of key Hezbollah infrastructure. He reaffirmed Israel’s “complete military freedom of action,” warning that any attempts by Hezbollah to rearm or rebuild would be met with force.

Separate Conflict in Gaza

While the ceasefire addresses the situation in Lebanon, it does not extend to the ongoing war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas. President Biden expressed continued U.S. commitment to pursuing peace in Gaza, calling for an end to fighting and displacement.

“The people of Gaza deserve security and prosperity,” Biden said. “Far too many civilians have suffered due to Hamas’ refusal to negotiate in good faith.” He urged Hamas to release hostages, including American citizens, as a step toward resolution.

Path to the Agreement

The ceasefire resulted from extensive diplomatic efforts, including Netanyahu’s meetings with U.S. special envoy Amos Hochstein and Lebanese officials. Intense discussions over the weekend culminated in the Cabinet’s vote on Tuesday morning.

This agreement represents a fragile yet critical step in addressing regional tensions, with much depending on the actions of all parties in the coming weeks.

Zelenskyy Aims for Diplomatic End to War with Russia by Next Year

KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his hope on Saturday, November 16, to bring an end to the ongoing war with Russia through diplomatic negotiations next year. His remarks came just a day after predicting that the conflict could conclude sooner under the leadership of United States President-elect Donald Trump, who is set to take office next year.

“For our part, we must do everything we can to ensure that this war ends next year. We have to end it by diplomatic means,” Zelenskyy stated during an interview with Ukrainian radio. “And this, I think, is very important.”

Diplomatic Uncertainties and Challenges

Despite Zelenskyy’s optimism, meaningful peace talks between Ukraine and Russia have not materialized. The potential influence of a Trump presidency on the conflict adds another layer of complexity. Trump has frequently claimed he would end the war swiftly but has not detailed how this would be achieved.

Zelenskyy underscored the challenges Ukraine faces:
“You are at war with a state that does not value its people, that has a lot of equipment, and does not care how many people die,” he said.

Russian Stance on Negotiations

Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to demand Ukraine’s surrender of territories currently under Moscow’s control as a precondition for peace talks. Zelenskyy has firmly rejected these terms.

The Kremlin reiterated its stance during a phone call between Putin and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday, with Putin insisting on his territorial demands.

War Progress and G7 Support

Russia has made incremental advances in eastern Ukraine over the summer, nearing key locations such as Pokrovsk and Kurakhove. However, Zelenskyy noted that Russian forces are facing heavy losses, and their offensive has “slowed down” in several areas.

On Saturday, the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations released a statement marking 1,000 days since the beginning of the Russian invasion. The G7 reiterated its support for Ukraine, declaring that Russia remains the sole obstacle to achieving a fair and lasting peace.

“Russia remains the only obstacle to a just and durable peace,” the G7 stated, with Italy, the current chair of the group, reaffirming the commitment to stand united with Ukraine.

As the conflict endures, the path toward resolution remains fraught with challenges, but Ukraine’s leadership emphasizes the importance of diplomatic efforts to secure peace and stability.

Hamas Urges End to Israel Conflict Following Trump’s Election Victory

A high-ranking Hamas official has called for an immediate end to Israel’s military actions in Gaza and a renewed effort toward Palestinian statehood, following Donald Trump’s recent election win.

“The election of Trump as the 47th president is a U.S. matter,” Hamas Political Bureau member Basem Naim told Newsweek. “But we look forward to an immediate end to the aggression against our people, especially in Gaza, and support for our right to freedom, independence, and a sovereign state with Jerusalem as its capital.”

Naim also criticized what he described as the U.S. administration’s “blind support” for Israel at the expense of Palestinian rights and regional stability.

Trump’s Relationship with Israel and Netanyahu

During his previous term, Trump was a close ally to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, now leading Israel in a complex conflict involving multiple fronts, beginning with a large Hamas-led attack on Israel in October 2023. However, Trump recently voiced criticism of Netanyahu’s wartime approach, advocating for a quick resolution to the conflict.

An Israeli official told Newsweek that U.S.-Israel relations have long been a bipartisan priority, adding that they expect continued collaboration with Trump’s administration to promote peace and security in the Middle East.

After Trump’s victory, Netanyahu congratulated him on what he described as “history’s greatest comeback,” and later had a “warm and cordial” discussion with him, focusing on Israel’s security and the shared concern over Iran.

Growing U.S. Policy Debate on Middle East Conflict

The ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, which has extended to include Israeli actions against Hezbollah in Lebanon and clashes with other Iran-aligned factions, remains a divisive issue in the U.S. Biden’s administration has faced criticism from pro-Israel advocates who seek stronger support for Israel, while pro-Palestinian groups call for stricter limits on military assistance to Israel to protect civilians.

Vice President Kamala Harris echoed the administration’s stance by advocating for peace and civilian protections while maintaining support for arms sales to Israel.

On Wednesday, Hamas urged the U.S. to “stop military support and political backing for Israel” and called on Trump to heed American voices opposing the Gaza conflict and “rejecting support for the Zionist entity.”

Abbas’ Reaction and Palestinian Aspirations for Statehood

West Bank-based Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas also congratulated Trump, emphasizing hopes for working together toward peace and a Palestinian state based on international law. Abbas underscored Palestinians’ commitment to freedom, self-determination, and peace, voicing confidence in U.S. support under Trump’s leadership.

Both Hamas and Abbas’ administration opposed Trump’s prior policies, including his 2018 relocation of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and his 2020 Middle East peace plan, often labeled as the “deal of the century.” The proposal aimed to establish a Palestinian state under significant restrictions, but it did not gain traction.

Although Trump’s peace plan stalled, his administration achieved the Abraham Accords, which led the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco to formalize relations with Israel. Trump’s previous term also saw rising U.S.-Iran tensions, especially after Washington’s 2018 exit from the Iran nuclear deal and the 2020 killing of IRGC General Qassem Soleimani.

Trump’s Campaign Position on Middle East Conflicts

In his victory speech, Trump vowed to maintain a strong military while avoiding conflict, boasting of peace during his last term. “They said, ‘He will start a war,’” he remarked. “I’m not going to start a war. I’m going to stop wars.”
