ISLAMABAD (JN) – Clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan intensified over the weekend, with both nations claiming heavy casualties in air and artillery strikes targeting military positions along their shared border. The violence has prompted civilian displacement near key crossings and drawn international concern over renewed instability in the region. Diplomatic efforts are underway to prevent further escalation, with Qatar, Turkey, and other countries offering mediation.

Pakistan’s military reported that its recent operations against Afghan military positions killed over 300 Afghan forces and wounded more than 500, following several days of cross-border clashes. Pakistani officials said the strikes targeted 102 Afghan posts, destroyed 163 tanks and armored vehicles, and captured 22 positions. The operations were reportedly aimed at locations associated with the Pakistani Taliban, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an outlawed group allied with Afghanistan’s Taliban but operating independently.

State-run Pakistani media reported that airstrikes continued into Saturday, hitting key military installations across eastern Afghanistan. Hundreds of residents near the northwestern Torkham border crossing fled to safer areas amid the attacks, while Pakistani authorities transported dozens of Afghan refugees to secure locations.

Afghanistan’s government has not independently confirmed Pakistan’s casualty claims. However, the Afghan Defense Ministry said its forces carried out strikes overnight on Pakistani bases in Miranshah and Spin Wam, destroying military installations and inflicting significant losses. In eastern Afghanistan, local officials accused Pakistan of targeting civilian areas, claiming at least 11 deaths and the destruction of homes. Pakistan has maintained that its operations are aimed exclusively at military targets.

Mullah Taj Mohammad Naqshbandi, an Afghan commissioner at the Torkham border, stated that Afghan forces “destroyed the Pakistani military regime’s commissariat, military units, and three important security towers.” Afghan officials on Friday reported 55 Pakistani soldiers killed in their strikes and claimed Afghan casualties were lower than reported by Pakistan.

Afghan government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid framed the attacks as a warning to Pakistan, asserting that Afghan forces would respond to “every evil act” while criticizing Islamabad for avoiding dialogue. Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif declared on social media that “our patience has now run out. Now it is open war between us.” The Pakistani military has accused Kabul of harboring TTP militants, allegations denied by Afghanistan’s Taliban government and the TTP itself.

On the ground, civilians are bearing the brunt of the conflict. Afghan refugee Ejaz Ul Haq said he and his family could not return home due to ongoing fighting, and many others struggled to secure food during Ramadan. Pakistani villagers near the border have called for a ceasefire to reduce civilian suffering.

Tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border have been persistent since October, when border clashes killed dozens of soldiers, civilians, and suspected militants. A Qatari-mediated ceasefire temporarily halted fighting, but subsequent peace talks in Turkey failed to produce a lasting resolution. Sporadic exchanges of fire resumed last week after Pakistan struck TTP hideouts.

International actors are again attempting to mediate the crisis. Qatar’s Minister of State Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi spoke with the foreign ministers of both countries on Friday to encourage de-escalation, according to Qatar’s Foreign Ministry. Turkey, Saudi Arabia, China, and other nations have also offered to support diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation along the volatile border.

CAIRO/GAZA CITY (Journos News) – Israel’s killing of a senior Hamas commander has injected fresh uncertainty into the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, with the group’s chief negotiator warning the strike could undermine already delicate truce arrangements.

In remarks broadcast from exile on Sunday, Hamas negotiator Khalil al-Hayya said the assassination risks destabilizing the agreement reached in October, urging the United States to intervene. According to reporting by Reuters, al-Hayya called on U.S. President Donald Trump to pressure Israel to comply with the terms of the ceasefire.

The strike targeted Raed Saed, a senior figure within Hamas’ armed wing. His death marks one of the most significant killings of a Hamas commander since the truce began, raising new questions about whether the pause in hostilities can hold.

Strategic Deterrence Tested

The assassination of Saed strikes at the core of Hamas’ military infrastructure at a moment when both sides are attempting to manage an uneasy ceasefire rather than a formal end to the war.

Hamas sources have described Saed as a senior operational commander responsible for weapons manufacturing and logistics inside the organization’s military apparatus. Israeli officials have previously linked him to planning roles associated with the October 7 attacks, the event that triggered the ongoing war.

The Hamas armed wing said it had already appointed a successor, signaling an attempt to maintain operational continuity. However, the group warned the killing would not deter its broader military objectives.

Such targeted strikes during a ceasefire risk shifting the balance from managed de-escalation back toward confrontation, particularly if retaliatory pressures inside Gaza intensify.

Leadership Gaps Deepen Internal Strain

Saed’s death further exposes leadership fragility within Hamas following the earlier killing of Yahya Sinwar by Israeli forces in 2024.

Since Sinwar’s death, Hamas has avoided appointing a single overall leader, instead operating through a collective five-member leadership council that includes al-Hayya. The arrangement has allowed the group to maintain political cohesion, but analysts say it also reflects a leadership structure adapting to sustained Israeli targeting.

With the loss of another senior commander, Hamas must now balance internal command restructuring while maintaining its negotiating position in ongoing ceasefire talks.

Public displays of support appeared intended to project stability. Thousands gathered in Gaza City for Saed’s funeral procession, one of the largest demonstrations of Hamas presence since the ceasefire began.

Territorial Reality Complicates Negotiations

The ceasefire has not resolved the core territorial divide across Gaza.

Israeli forces continue to control large sections of the enclave’s eastern zone, an area largely depopulated during the conflict. Hamas, meanwhile, has re-established administrative and security control over western areas where the majority of Gaza’s more than two million residents now live amid extensive destruction.

Negotiations over the next phase remain stalled. Israel insists that Hamas must disarm and be excluded from any future governing role in Gaza. Hamas has rejected both conditions, insisting Israeli forces must withdraw completely.

These unresolved demands continue to define the strategic impasse at the center of the ceasefire.

International Stabilization Plan Faces Political Limits

International mediators are attempting to construct a security framework that could sustain the truce.

The ceasefire agreement includes provisions for a multinational stabilization mission authorized by the United Nations. Planning discussions are scheduled in Doha, where United States Central Command is expected to host partner nations to explore deployment options.

Hamas, however, has already signaled resistance to a broad international presence inside the territory. Al-Hayya said any foreign force should remain confined to Gaza’s borders rather than operating within the enclave itself.

Those limitations could complicate efforts to build a peacekeeping arrangement acceptable to both sides.

Internal Security Violence Signals Fragmentation Risks

The fragile environment inside Gaza was underscored by a separate killing on Sunday.

Gunmen shot dead Ahmed Zamzam, an officer involved in counter-collaboration investigations within Gaza’s security services. The Gaza Interior Ministry accused collaborators acting under Israeli direction of carrying out the attack.

Responsibility was claimed by Ghassan Duhine, who said his faction had targeted Zamzam in retaliation against Hamas.

Reuters reported that the circumstances of the attack could not be independently verified, and Israeli officials did not immediately comment.

The incident highlights growing friction between Hamas and rival armed factions operating in areas still under Israeli control—an additional pressure point that could destabilize governance inside the enclave.

Ceasefire Stability Now Hinges on External Mediators

With targeted killings, leadership disruptions, and internal rivalries emerging simultaneously, the Gaza ceasefire faces mounting structural stress.

Diplomatic mediators—particularly the United States and regional partners—are now under increased pressure to preserve the truce framework while negotiations over Gaza’s long-term governance continue.

Whether the assassination of a senior commander proves to be an isolated escalation or the start of renewed confrontation may determine the durability of the ceasefire in the weeks ahead.

Israel has confirmed that recently returned remains from Gaza belong to hostage Dror Or, narrowing the number of missing individuals as negotiations progress over the next stage of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement.

The announcement comes as Turkish, Qatari and Egyptian officials meet in Cairo to secure the framework for a longer-term arrangement that would reshape governance and reconstruction efforts in Gaza. While the initial phase of the truce has largely held since taking effect in October, nearly every element of the plan’s future remains uncertain, from timelines to implementation on the ground.

Hostage identification deepens emotional toll

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that the remains repatriated this week were formally identified as those of Dror Or, one of the hundreds of people taken during the October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel. The return leaves two bodies still unaccounted for in Gaza — one Israeli citizen and one Thai national — as the first stage of the ceasefire approaches its endpoint.

Palestinian militants handed over Or’s remains on Tuesday. Israel’s military said he and his wife, Yonat, were killed when armed militants entered Kibbutz Beeri during the assault, one of the hardest-hit communities that day. According to the Hostages Families Forum, the couple managed to evacuate two of their children, Alma and Noam, through a window before they were killed. Both children were abducted and later released as part of a hostage exchange in November 2023.

The Forum remembered Or as a devoted father, longtime cheesemaker and manager at the Be’eri dairy. He was described as a skilled cook and yoga teacher who had deep ties to the close-knit kibbutz community.

Israel says approximately 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken to Gaza in the October 7 attacks. With Or’s identification, almost all hostages or their remains have now been returned to Israel. Under the terms of the current agreement, Israel has approved the release of 15 Palestinian bodies for every hostage whose remains are transferred.

Talks in Cairo look to expand fragile ceasefire

Qatar, Turkey and Egypt have been working in coordination with the United States to maintain the truce and shape a longer-term framework. On Tuesday, Turkey’s intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin met in Cairo with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, along with Egypt’s intelligence chief Hasan Reshat.

A Turkish security official, speaking anonymously under national regulations, said the discussions focused on moving into the second phase of the ceasefire arrangement. The governments also agreed to deepen cooperation with the Civil-Military Coordination Center (CMCC), which was established to monitor compliance and prevent violations.

The next phase includes the creation of an international governance mechanism for Gaza, potentially operating under a renewable two-year United Nations mandate. According to Israeli officials, a stabilization force would be responsible for securing the territory and ensuring the disarmament of Hamas — a central demand for Israel and one of the most contested aspects of the plan.

Diplomats and regional analysts note that major questions remain unresolved, including who would participate in the stabilization force, the scope of authority for international administrators and how reconstruction funds would be managed.

Conditions on the ground remain critical

Even as high-level talks continue, everyday life in Gaza remains shaped by displacement, limited services and severe shortages. Most Palestinians have been unable to return to their homes and remain dependent on humanitarian assistance for food, shelter and medical care.

Reconstruction efforts have barely begun, hindered by damaged infrastructure, restricted access to materials and the absence of a confirmed long-term security arrangement. Aid agencies warn that humanitarian needs will continue to intensify unless sustained access and stability are restored.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says 69,775 Palestinians have been killed and 170,863 injured in Israel’s retaliatory offensive since October 2023. The ministry does not differentiate between civilians and fighters in its reporting but has stated that women and children account for the majority of deaths. Although operating under Hamas-run authorities, the ministry is staffed by medical professionals and maintains records viewed as broadly reliable by independent experts and international organizations.

A fragile process with uncertain timelines

Despite progress in recent weeks, officials across the region acknowledge that the next stage of the ceasefire will be significantly more complex. Political divisions, security concerns and competing regional priorities continue to delay the development of a unified roadmap.

While no formal timeline has been released, mediators say the goal is to preserve current stability and prevent a return to large-scale fighting. For families awaiting news of remaining hostages, the process continues to move slowly and unpredictably.

As negotiations continue, the return and identification of Dror Or’s remains underscores the humanitarian and emotional weight carried by both sides. For many Israelis, the latest development signals a measure of closure. For Palestinians in Gaza, the challenges ahead remain vast, with reconstruction, security and governance still unresolved.

Hopes for Gaza Ceasefire Fade Despite Renewed U.S. Push Post-Lebanon Truce

As Lebanon experiences a fragile truce following intense clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, Gaza remains engulfed in conflict. Despite U.S. efforts to broker peace, Palestinians in the enclave feel increasingly abandoned.

Shifting Focus: Lebanon’s Truce Leaves Gaza Isolated

The recent ceasefire in Lebanon has offered temporary relief to its citizens, but at a cost to Gaza. Hezbollah, which previously tied its actions to the situation in Gaza, abandoned its demand for a simultaneous truce after facing escalating Israeli military operations. These included targeted assassinations and ground assaults in southern Lebanon.

“Gaza is left alone,” said Hatem Mohamed, a Gaza City resident. “This allows Israel to focus solely on Palestinians and what remains of our cause.”

Deadlock in Gaza Ceasefire Talks

Efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza have stagnated. Mediators like Qatar, once instrumental in negotiations, have withdrawn, closing Hamas’ political office in Doha due to a lack of good-faith discussions. Turkey, a known ally of Hamas, denied reports of hosting a new Hamas bureau, though it acknowledged the group’s officials travel there frequently.

According to Tahani Mustafa, a senior Palestine analyst at the International Crisis Group, the dynamics in Gaza remain unchanged despite Lebanon’s ceasefire. “Both sides hold demands that are irreconcilable. Israel seeks to dismantle Hamas and maintain military presence, while Hamas demands an end to hostilities, the return of displaced people, and no Israeli troops on the ground.”

Netanyahu and Biden: Divergent Goals

While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted at improved conditions for a hostage deal, he remains adamant about continuing military operations until Hamas is dismantled. “Ending the war is not an option until Hamas is eliminated,” he said, rejecting any permanent ceasefire for now.

President Joe Biden, however, sees a potential opening for renewed negotiations, emphasizing cooperation with regional powers like Turkey, Egypt, and Qatar. “We aim to secure a ceasefire, release hostages, and end the war without Hamas in power,” Biden stated.

Hamas and Gaza: Struggles Persist

Despite public support for ceasefire efforts, Hamas maintains firm conditions, including Israel’s complete withdrawal and the release of Palestinian prisoners. However, the leverage Hamas holds—hostages taken during the October 7 attacks—has dwindled. Of the 101 hostages reportedly still in Gaza, at least 34 are presumed dead, further weakening Hamas’ bargaining position.

Jihad Abu Yasser, a baker from northern Gaza, expressed frustration. “We’ve lost leverage. If this war continues, the remaining hostages could die, leaving us negotiating with nothing.”

A Growing Sense of Despair

The prolonged conflict has left many Gazans feeling hopeless. Abu Yasser summarized the sentiment: “People believed a Lebanon ceasefire meant hope for us, but those were lies. For the love of God, stop this war.”

This escalating despair underscores the dire need for meaningful intervention to end the suffering of those caught in the crossfire.

Ceasefire Holds, but Doubts Persist Near Israel-Lebanon Border

A fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has largely held, though tensions remain high near the Israel-Lebanon border. The ceasefire, brokered after over a year of intense conflict, faces challenges as both sides accuse each other of violations.

Israel Strikes Back
The Israeli military reported artillery fire and airstrikes in southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah activities. These actions followed observations of suspicious movements near a Hezbollah weapons facility and vehicles breaching the ceasefire terms.

Meanwhile, Lebanon accused Israel of multiple violations and stated it was closely monitoring the situation.

Calm Amid Uncertainty
Despite sporadic clashes, the ceasefire has brought a relative calm to the border region. Military bases, once abuzz with activity, now show signs of a slower pace. Soldiers are seen performing routine maintenance, and some express cautious optimism.

“We’re glad to be out of the fighting, but if Hezbollah remains a threat, we know we might have to return,” said one Israeli captain.

Public Sentiment Divided
Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have expressed confidence, lifting some restrictions in border areas and dismantling protective structures. Netanyahu also warned of a forceful response if Hezbollah breaches the ceasefire.

However, not everyone shares this optimism. Michael Kabesa, mayor of Hatzor Haglilit, called the ceasefire a “surrender.” “We didn’t finish the job,” he said, predicting future conflict if Hezbollah regains strength.

Rebuilding and Returning Home
For northern Israeli communities evacuated at the war’s onset, returning home is a priority. Many residents, like Kabesa, demand robust military presence and long-term security assurances. Israeli forces plan to gradually hand over control of southern Lebanon to the Lebanese army, supported by UNIFIL and oversight from U.S. and French forces.

Yet Kabesa remains skeptical. “No international force can guarantee our safety. We have to protect ourselves,” he said, referencing lessons learned from the devastating Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023.

Resilience Amid Destruction
Some residents in the north chose not to evacuate during the war. Chris Coyle, a Scottish immigrant living in Kiryat Shmona, witnessed months of relentless Hezbollah rocket fire.

“Missiles hit several times a day. I had just four seconds to find cover, so I used to lie behind the fridge,” he recounted. Despite the destruction, Coyle believes the ceasefire offers hope for rebuilding.

“I’ve spoken to neighbors who plan to return. It’ll take time, but the town can come back to life,” he said.

Cautious Optimism Among Soldiers
Israeli troops leaving Lebanon see this as a chance for reflection. “It’s a moment to evaluate,” said the same army captain. “I hope our leaders will use this opportunity wisely but know when to react if necessary.”

While the ceasefire holds for now, residents and soldiers alike remain wary of what lies ahead.

Hezbollah Launches Heavy Rocket Barrage Into Israel Amid Escalating Conflict

BEIRUT (AP) — On Sunday, Hezbollah fired at least 185 rockets and other projectiles into Israel, marking its heaviest attack in days. The barrage wounded seven people and came in response to deadly Israeli airstrikes on Beirut, even as efforts to negotiate a cease-fire continued.

An Israeli airstrike also hit a Lebanese army center on the southwestern coastal road between Tyre and Naqoura, killing one soldier and wounding 18 others, according to Lebanon’s military. Israel expressed regret for the incident, stating the strike occurred in an area of combat with Hezbollah and was not intended to target Lebanese forces. The incident is under investigation.

Since the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah began, Israeli strikes have killed over 40 Lebanese soldiers, despite Lebanon’s military largely remaining on the sidelines of the fighting.

Lebanon’s Reaction

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned the strike on the Lebanese army as a direct blow to U.S.-led cease-fire efforts. He described it as a “bloody message rejecting all ongoing attempts” to end the war.

Hezbollah’s Attacks and Israeli Retaliation

Hezbollah’s attacks, including rockets, missiles, and drones, began after the October 7, 2023, Hamas assault from Gaza. The group claims these actions are acts of solidarity with Palestinians and Hamas, both of which are supported by Iran.

Israel has launched numerous retaliatory strikes, including significant attacks in September that escalated the conflict into full-scale war. These strikes killed Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah and several senior commanders.

On Sunday, some of Hezbollah’s projectiles were intercepted by Israel’s defense systems, but others caused injuries and damage:

A 60-year-old man in northern Israel was severely injured.

A 23-year-old man in Petah Tikva suffered minor wounds.

A 70-year-old woman in the same city suffered smoke inhalation when her car caught fire.

A rocket strike in Haifa hit a residential building, leaving it at risk of collapse.

Israeli sirens sounded throughout central and northern regions as new attacks unfolded.

Impact of Israeli Airstrikes on Lebanon

Israeli airstrikes without prior warning on Saturday hit central Beirut, killing at least 29 people and wounding 67, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. On Sunday, smoke rose again over Beirut as new strikes targeted Hezbollah command centers in the southern Dahiyeh suburb.

The ongoing conflict has devastated Lebanon:

Over 3,700 deaths and more than 1.2 million displaced, about a quarter of the population, according to the Health Ministry.

On the Israeli side, approximately 90 soldiers and nearly 50 civilians have been killed since the conflict began. Around 60,000 Israelis have been displaced from northern areas.

International Efforts to Broker Peace

U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein has spent months attempting to mediate a cease-fire, while the European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, urged both sides on Sunday to finalize an agreement.

Borrell met with Lebanese leaders, including Prime Minister Mikati and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah ally. The EU has pledged €200 million ($208 million) to support Lebanon’s military, which could deploy additional forces to the south if a truce is reached.

An emerging agreement would align with a U.N. Security Council resolution from 2006, requiring Hezbollah and Israeli forces to withdraw from southern Lebanon below the Litani River. The Lebanese army, supported by U.N. peacekeepers, would patrol the area.

Despite its symbolic role as a unifying national institution, Lebanon’s military lacks the capacity to confront Hezbollah or deter Israeli military actions. As the conflict escalates, the international community continues to press for a resolution to prevent further devastation.

US-Israel Panel to Investigate Civilian Casualties in Gaza, First Meeting Set for December

The Biden administration has announced that a U.S.-Israel panel will hold its first meeting in early December to address reports of civilian harm during the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This meeting, however, comes more than a month later than the U.S. initially requested, which was for the panel to be established by the end of October.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated that the panel will focus on gathering information regarding incidents involving American-made or -supplied weapons, which have been implicated in civilian casualties. The goal, Miller explained, is to assist the State Department in evaluating the use of U.S.-provided weapons and to inform potential U.S. policy decisions related to the war.

This panel follows the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, which triggered Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza. The conflict, which has lasted for weeks, has caused widespread devastation. Experts warn that famine may already be affecting northern Gaza, with Israel’s air and ground offensives leading to hundreds of deaths and forcing tens of thousands to flee their homes.

In response to worsening humanitarian conditions, U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, sent a letter to Israeli leaders in October, urging them to improve humanitarian conditions in Gaza. The letter warned that the U.S. might restrict some weapons systems to Israel if progress was not made within 30 days. However, that deadline passed without any concrete decisions, and while some positive steps were noted, Israel has yet to meet the full criteria laid out by the U.S.

Aid organizations have reported that the situation in Gaza has continued to deteriorate, citing incidents such as the theft of nearly 100 trucks carrying vital supplies, which led to soaring food prices and severe shortages, particularly in central Gaza. Most of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been displaced, and many are now living in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions in tent camps.

Miller acknowledged these developments, pointing to a breakdown in law and order in Gaza and emphasizing the need for an end to the fighting. He stressed that a sustainable resolution to the crisis could only be achieved with a new governance and security framework in Gaza, which would address the root issues behind the ongoing conflict.

The U.S. hopes that the investigation into civilian casualties will contribute to making more informed decisions about its future support and actions in the region.

Qatar Pauses Mediation Efforts in Gaza Ceasefire Talks Due to Lack of Progress

Qatar announced on Saturday that it has halted its mediation efforts between Israel and Hamas for a Gaza ceasefire, citing a lack of good-faith negotiations from both parties.

Majed Al-Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, stated that Qatar informed both parties 10 days ago that if they couldn’t reach an agreement, it would suspend its mediation. “The State of Qatar notified the parties during the last attempts to reach an agreement that it would stall its efforts to mediate between Hamas and Israel if an agreement was not reached in that round,” Al-Ansari said.

Qatar has played a central role in mediation for over a year, working to secure a ceasefire and arrange a hostage release deal—an objective highly prioritized by U.S. President Joe Biden. However, despite months of negotiations, both goals remain unresolved.

As part of its decision, Qatar has also closed Hamas’ political office in Doha. According to a diplomatic source familiar with the matter, Doha suspended the office about a week ago due to the stalled negotiations and lack of genuine willingness to engage from both sides. “The office won’t be operational, so [Hamas] may leave. The office could open again if talks restart,” the diplomat said. Although Hamas officials may leave Qatar, they have not been given a specific deadline.

U.S. and Qatari sources confirmed that the U.S. recently requested Qatar take this step, but a Qatari diplomatic source emphasized that the decision was made independently, not due to external pressure.

In response to media inquiries, the White House National Security Council declined to comment. However, a senior U.S. administration official had remarked on Friday, “After rejecting repeated proposals to release hostages, [Hamas] leaders should no longer be welcome in the capitals of any American partner.” The official praised Qatar’s past efforts in mediation, especially for helping secure the release of nearly 200 hostages last year, but expressed frustration at Hamas’ refusal to release any hostages in recent talks in Cairo.

A Hamas representative dismissed reports of their potential expulsion from Qatar as “baseless” and a “pressure tactic.”

Qatar’s decision to pause its mediator role follows recent tensions, including the death of Israeli-American hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin and Hamas’ rejection of another ceasefire proposal. The Hamas office in Doha may reopen if both parties return to the negotiating table with genuine intent to reach a peace agreement.

Earlier in April, Qatar had temporarily closed the Hamas office, leading officials to relocate to Turkey. At that time, requests from the Biden administration and Israel prompted Qatar to reopen the office to support renewed discussions.
