TOKYO, Japan – Recovery efforts gathered pace Monday in Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture as residents cleared debris and began rebuilding after last week’s powerful earthquake, while Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi visited affected communities and pledged continued government support.

The magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kyushu, Japan’s southern main island, on Tuesday, killing 38 people and injuring 114, according to prefectural authorities. Officials said one person died from apparent heat stroke while sheltering inside a vehicle after the quake, while another death remains under investigation.

Heat and Water Shortages Hamper Recovery

Extreme summer temperatures have added to the challenges facing thousands of displaced residents.

More than 46,000 households remained without running water on Monday, while several communities also reported fuel shortages.

The Japan Meteorological Agency forecast temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), raising concerns about dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

More than 8,500 people continued to stay in evacuation centers, including schools, community halls and gymnasiums. Many of the facilities lack air conditioning. Others have chosen to sleep in parked vehicles or outside damaged homes.

Residents spent the day clearing debris, damaged furniture and household appliances as local authorities organized waste collection. Construction of temporary housing also began in the towns of Uki and Hikawa, while hotels and inns opened additional rooms for evacuees.

Disaster experts have long warned that overcrowded shelters and limited sanitation can increase health risks following major earthquakes.

Prime Minister Promises Additional Support

Prime Minister Takaichi toured the disaster zone by military helicopter before visiting an evacuation center equipped with air conditioning, cardboard beds and privacy partitions.

Images of the visit prompted criticism on social media, with some users arguing that many shelters across Kumamoto lack similar facilities.

During a meeting with the prime minister, Kumamoto Governor Takashi Kimura highlighted the severe heat affecting displaced residents and requested additional government assistance to improve conditions at evacuation centers.

He cited shortages of clean water and medical services as immediate priorities.

Takaichi said the government would review the requests and move quickly to provide additional support where needed.

Shopping Mall Explosion Under Scrutiny

Questions also continued to surround the explosion at a collapsed shopping mall that claimed several lives after the earthquake.

Habita, a retailer operating inside Aeon Mall in Kashima, acknowledged that it had instructed two employees who later died to return to the building and place sales proceeds into a safe if conditions allowed.

Company executives attended the wake of 22-year-old employee Kurumi Otake on Sunday and apologized to her family.

Sales manager Goji Yuse confirmed the instruction had been given before the explosion.

“I wish someone had stopped her. My daughter is not coming back,” Otake’s mother told company representatives.

Mall officials believe a gas leak caused the explosion after about 3,000 shoppers had already evacuated the building. Some employees, however, remained inside.

Rescue teams later pulled five survivors from the debris and recovered the bodies of seven victims.

Recovery Effort Continues

Authorities said the earthquake destroyed about 700 homes and damaged more than 11,300 buildings across Kumamoto Prefecture.

Emergency crews continue restoring essential services while local governments expand temporary housing and support thousands of residents displaced by one of Japan’s deadliest earthquakes this year.

This report is based on reporting by The Associated Press.

Papua, New Guinea – Separatist fighters in Indonesia’s Papua region have claimed responsibility for killing an American pilot and burning his aircraft after it landed in Highland Papua province, while Indonesian authorities say the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. The BBC reported that officials have confirmed the aircraft was found burned but have not independently verified the rebels’ account.

The West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB), an armed separatist group seeking independence for Papua, said it shot and killed American pilot Nicholas F. Gosselin after his aircraft landed on Thursday. In a statement, the group said it then set the plane on fire, alleging that civilian aircraft had been used to transport Indonesian military personnel and supplies into the region.

Indonesian officials confirmed that the aircraft was discovered burned at an airport in Yahukimo Regency but said it remains unclear what happened to Gosselin and the seven passengers who were reportedly aboard the flight.

Investigation Continues

Indonesia’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation said the flight departed without any reported security concerns and communication was lost shortly after the aircraft landed.

The agency said preliminary information from the airport where the flight originated indicated the pilot may have died, but stressed that the cause of the incident had not yet been confirmed and remained under investigation by relevant authorities.

Yusuf Sutejo, a spokesperson for Indonesia’s joint police-military operations, said authorities could not confirm whether separatist fighters had attacked the aircraft or determine the fate of those on board.

The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta and the U.S. State Department have been contacted for comment, according to the BBC.

Rebels Defend Attack

TPNPB spokesperson Sebby Sambom said the group had prohibited flights across Papua because it alleges civilian aircraft have supported Indonesian military operations.

According to Sambom, the aircraft was attacked because it allegedly violated that warning. He also warned that the group would continue targeting civilian aircraft it believes are assisting Indonesian security forces with transporting personnel or military supplies.

The separatist group further said any recovery of the pilot’s body should take place without Indonesian military or police personnel entering the area. It also renewed calls for negotiations with the Indonesian government over Papua’s political future.

These claims have not been independently verified.

Longstanding Conflict

Papua has experienced decades of conflict between Indonesian authorities and armed separatist groups seeking independence for the resource-rich region. The dispute dates back to 1969, when Papua was incorporated into Indonesia, a process that remains contested by many indigenous Papuans.

Separatist groups have accused Indonesian security forces of contributing to civilian casualties and displacement during the conflict, while the Indonesian government has maintained military operations against armed insurgents.

The latest incident follows previous attacks involving foreign aviation personnel operating in Papua. In 2024, a New Zealand pilot was released after spending 19 months in captivity following negotiations involving Indonesian and New Zealand officials. A month before that release, another New Zealand pilot, Glen Malcolm Conning, was fatally shot after landing in a remote village.

Indonesian authorities continue investigating the latest incident as officials work to determine the fate of everyone aboard the aircraft.

MIAMI — A widely used online platform that facilitates deliveries and financial support from Cuban Americans to relatives on the island has stopped accepting new orders, according to reporting by the Associated Press, as expanded U.S. sanctions targeting Cuban state-linked entities continue to reshape cross-border commercial channels.

Envioscuba.com, one of the main portals used by Cubans in the United States to send money, food, and goods to family members in Cuba, announced it has ceased taking new orders. The company said on its website that, “Due to reasons beyond our control, our platform can no longer provide services,” without offering further explanation. It remains unclear when the suspension of new orders began.

The move comes amid a broader tightening of U.S. restrictions aimed at limiting financial flows and business activity linked to Cuba’s government and military-affiliated conglomerates, including GAESA, which controls extensive commercial operations on the island.

Sanctions pressure reshapes cross-border services

The shutdown of Envioscuba.com highlights how sanctions policy is increasingly affecting informal commercial networks that have long supported Cuban households facing shortages of food, medicine, and basic goods.

These platforms have allowed Cuban Americans—particularly in Miami—to purchase goods online for delivery inside Cuba or send remittances in the form of packaged goods sourced from inventories inside the country.

Emilio Morales, president of the Havana Consulting Group in Miami, said platforms like Envioscuba.com typically operate through commercial arrangements involving GAESA-linked supply chains inside Cuba. He said most such services do not ship directly from the United States, but rely on goods stored in state-controlled warehouses on the island.

Morales warned that the sector is likely to contract further under U.S. policy pressure, suggesting that additional platforms could shut down to avoid exposure to sanctions risks tied to transactions involving Cuban state entities.

Broader corporate pullback from Cuba

The Trump administration’s sanctions framework has expanded restrictions that threaten to freeze U.S. assets of foreign companies and limit travel for investors and employees linked to targeted Cuban entities.

The policy shift has also coincided with a gradual withdrawal by international companies operating in Cuba. Spanish hotel chain Meliá has recently said it will discontinue operations at 15 of the 34 hotels it manages on the island, reflecting growing uncertainty among foreign firms with long-standing commercial ties in the country.

For many Cubans, the reduction in private and semi-private delivery channels adds further pressure to an already strained domestic environment marked by persistent shortages, power outages, and economic instability.

Uncertainty over operations

Envioscuba.com did not provide details about its operational shutdown timeline, and attempts to contact the company were unsuccessful. The platform does not publicly list a phone number or email address for customer inquiries.

While the company said previously approved and in-process orders would still be delivered, it did not clarify how long fulfillment operations would continue.

Independent verification of the company’s internal decision-making process was not immediately available.

Nigeria has secured the release of 130 schoolchildren and staff abducted from a Catholic school in Niger state, officials said, marking the latest development in a series of mass kidnappings that have intensified concerns over security in the country’s north-central region.

Police in Niger state confirmed that “the remaining batch of the abducted students” from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri community were freed, according to a statement by spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun. The release follows weeks of uncertainty after gunmen abducted at least 303 children and 12 teachers in an attack on November 21.

Coordinated Release Follows Earlier Recoveries

Authorities told The Associated Press that the newly released group completes the recovery of most of those abducted in the initial attack. Earlier, 50 children escaped shortly after the incident, and 100 others were released earlier this month.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said the release followed what he described as a “military intelligence driven operation,” adding that the children would return to the Niger state capital, Minna, before reuniting with their families ahead of the holiday period.

Another presidential aide, Sunday Dare, also confirmed the release in a statement, saying that none of the abducted individuals remain in captivity. Officials did not provide further details on the operation.

Uncertainty Remains Over Missing Individuals

Despite the reported releases, authorities acknowledged that questions remain regarding the fate of those still unaccounted for. Police declined to provide details when asked about approximately 35 missing children and teachers, stating that further information would be released later.

The lack of clarity underscores the challenges facing Nigerian authorities in tracking and resolving large-scale abduction cases, which often involve remote locations and limited access for security forces.

Broader Pattern of Insecurity in Northern Nigeria

The kidnapping in Niger state is part of a broader pattern of mass abductions in Nigeria’s conflict-affected north, where armed groups frequently target schools, villages, and travelers. No group has claimed responsibility for the November 21 attack.

Local residents have blamed armed criminal gangs, often referred to as “bandits,” who operate across parts of northern and central Nigeria, frequently carrying out kidnappings for ransom.

Reporting from The Associated Press indicates that such incidents have become increasingly common in recent years, placing pressure on federal and state authorities to improve security responses.

Regional Security and Political Pressure

The incident comes amid heightened domestic and international scrutiny of Nigeria’s security situation. President Bola Tinubu’s administration has faced pressure to address rising violence and mass abductions, particularly in rural areas.

International concerns have also been raised regarding attacks on religious communities. U.S. President Donald Trump has previously alleged that Christians are being targeted in Nigeria’s security crisis, adding a geopolitical dimension to the issue.

Nigeria’s government has not confirmed any systematic targeting based on religion and generally avoids disclosing details of rescue operations or negotiations in kidnapping cases.

Ransom Economy and Limited Transparency

Security analysts note that many kidnappings in Nigeria are believed to involve ransom payments, though authorities rarely confirm such transactions. Arrests of perpetrators are also uncommon, contributing to a cycle of impunity, according to experts.

The government’s limited disclosure on recovery efforts and arrests has made it difficult to assess the effectiveness of counter-kidnapping strategies. Analysts say this lack of transparency complicates efforts to address the root causes of the crisis.

Continued Risk of Mass Abductions

The Niger state incident occurred amid a wave of coordinated attacks across multiple states, including a similar kidnapping in neighboring Kebbi state and an assault on worshippers in Kwara state. All abducted individuals in those incidents were later released, according to officials.

While the release of the 130 abductees marks a significant development, the broader security situation in Nigeria remains fragile. Analysts say continued attacks highlight the need for stronger security coordination and long-term strategies to address armed groups operating across vast, difficult-to-police المناطق.

As families prepare for reunification, the case underscores both the human toll of Nigeria’s kidnapping crisis and the ongoing challenge facing authorities in restoring public confidence and security.
