Bobby Sherman, Beloved Teen Idol Turned Lifesaving EMT, Dies at 81

Bobby Sherman, the boyish-faced pop sensation who lit up teen magazines and record charts in the late ’60s and early ’70s, has died at 81. Once idolized for his bubblegum pop hits and swoon-worthy smile, Sherman later traded the stage for stethoscopes — dedicating his life to saving others as a first responder and CPR instructor.

His wife, Brigitte Poublon, shared the news of his passing, revealing that Sherman died while holding her hand. “That’s who Bobby was — brave, gentle, and full of light,” she wrote. Sherman had revealed earlier this year that he was battling Stage 4 cancer.

From Teen Heartthrob to Pop Chart Hero

With shaggy hair, piercing blue eyes, and a clean-cut charm, Sherman became a staple on the covers of Tiger Beat and Sixteen. His face graced everything from lunchboxes to cereal boxes, and his music—sweet, simple, and catchy—won him adoring fans across the country.

He scored four Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including:

“Little Woman”

“Julie, Do Ya Love Me”

“Easy Come, Easy Go”

“La La La (If I Had You)”

His album Here Comes Bobby spent nearly a year on the Billboard 200, peaking at No. 10.

Sherman’s big break came with the ABC music variety show Shindig! in the mid-’60s, followed by starring roles in the TV series Here Come the Brides (1968–1970) and Getting Together (1971), a Partridge Family spinoff. His performance of the Here Come the Brides theme song, “Seattle,” helped launch him to idol status.

A Life-Changing Party—and a Fast-Track to Fame

Sherman’s rise to fame began almost by accident. In 1964, while studying child psychology at community college, he attended a Hollywood party with his girlfriend. He sang with the band, caught the ears of guests like Jane Fonda and Natalie Wood, and days later, had an agent—and soon after, a career.

“I probably could’ve relished the fun of it a little more,” he reflected later. “It was a lot of blood, sweat and tears. But it was the best of times.”

From Hit Records to Helping Hands

By the late ’70s, Sherman stepped away from the spotlight. The grueling pace of touring and filming took its toll. “It was so hectic for three years that I didn’t know what home was,” he told The Washington Post.

His second act? Saving lives. In 1988, Sherman became a certified emergency medical technician (EMT), teaching CPR and first aid to LAPD recruits—and donating his salary to boot. He later served as a reserve deputy in San Bernardino County, where he once helped deliver five babies in backseats and even on sidewalks.

In one touching story, after helping deliver a baby, the mother named the newborn Roberta—in honor of “Bobby.”

A Public Servant, Through and Through

Sherman’s humanitarian work didn’t go unnoticed. He was named LAPD’s Reserve Officer of the Year in 1999, received the FBI’s Exceptional Service Award, and earned the Los Angeles County Reserve Foundation’s “Twice a Citizen” Award.

In 2004, Congressman Howard McKeon honored Sherman in a speech on the U.S. House floor, praising his service and selflessness.

A Return to the Stage—and Giving Back

Even after leaving fame behind, Sherman occasionally returned to perform. In the ’90s, he toured with fellow teen idols like Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, and Peter Noone. Fans—young and old—showered him with roses and teddy bears.

Sherman also co-founded the Brigitte and Bobby Sherman Children’s Foundation, which supports education and healthcare for children in Ghana.

Tributes Pour In

Stars from across generations paid tribute to Sherman this week. Actress Patricia Heaton called on “all my ’70s peeps” to honor him, while Lorenzo Lamas remembered listening to Sherman on school bus rides.

“He was the kind of boy who didn’t do things just to be mischievous,” Sherman once said of his upbringing. That sentiment echoed in how he lived—always thoughtful, always kind.

Sherman is survived by his wife Brigitte, and two sons, Christopher and Tyler.

A Life of Music, Service, and Grace

From teenage bedrooms wallpapered with his posters to hospital hallways where he saved lives, Bobby Sherman lived multiple lives with heart, humility, and purpose. In the end, he was more than a teen idol — he was a quiet hero, always ready to help.

As his wife beautifully put it: “Even in his final days, he stayed strong for me.” And that’s how fans will remember him — strong, soulful, and forever smiling.

Game Show Icon Wink Martindale, Early Elvis Interviewer, Dies at 91

Wink Martindale — the charismatic host who brought charm and energy to classic game shows like Gambit and Tic-Tac-Dough — has died at the age of 91.

Martindale passed away Tuesday at Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage, California, after a year-long battle with lymphoma, according to his publicist Brian Mayes.

“He was doing pretty well up until a couple weeks ago,” Mayes said.

A Television Trailblazer

Wink Martindale’s legacy in American television is undeniable. His breakout game show, Gambit, premiered in 1972 — on the very same day as The Price Is Right with Bob Barker and The Joker’s Wild. Martindale’s smooth style and ability to connect with contestants made Gambit an instant hit.

“From the day it hit the air, Gambit spelled winner,” he wrote in his memoir Winking at Life. “Like playing Old Maids as a kid, everybody knows how to play 21.”

Despite Gambit’s success, it eventually lost its spot to a new juggernaut — Wheel of Fortune, which debuted in 1975. But Martindale wasn’t down for long.

In 1978, he struck gold again with Tic-Tac-Dough, where he hosted for seven years. The show saw history in the making with Navy Lt. Thom McKee’s legendary 88-game winning streak — bringing in over $300,000 in prizes, including eight cars and 16 vacations.

“Overnight I had gone from the outhouse to the penthouse,” Martindale wrote.

Martindale’s entertainment career began long before TV. Born Winston Conrad Martindale in Jackson, Tennessee, on December 4, 1933, he was a radio DJ by age 17. His early gigs included stations in his hometown and Memphis — where fate put him near a young Elvis Presley.

On July 8, 1954, Martindale was in the studio the night Presley’s first record, That’s All Right, debuted on WHBQ. By 1956, he invited Elvis for one of his earliest TV interviews on his show Top Ten Dance Party. The two stayed in occasional contact over the years, even conducting a transatlantic phone interview while Presley served in the Army in Germany.

Martindale’s second wife, Sandy, also briefly dated Presley after meeting him on the set of G.I. Blues.

Wink’s smooth voice wasn’t limited to hosting. In 1959, he recorded Deck of Cards, a spoken-word wartime piece that reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over a million copies. That same year, he moved to Los Angeles, kicking off decades of radio and television work.

He hosted his first network game show, What’s This Song?, in 1964 and continued with numerous others — including Dream Girl ’67, How’s Your Mother-in-Law?, and a Las Vegas revival of Gambit in the 1980s.

His production company, Wink Martindale Enterprises, brought new shows like Headline Chasers and Bumper Stumpers to life. He remained active in the industry into the 2010s, hosting Debt on Lifetime and Instant Recall on GSN.

He even returned to radio in 2012, hosting The 100 Greatest Christmas Hits of All Time, and lent his voice to The History of Rock ‘n’ Roll in 2021.

Martindale’s unique blend of warmth, wit, and showmanship helped shape American game shows into what they are today.

“I love working with contestants, interacting with the audience and, to a degree, watching lives change,” he once said. “Winning a lot of cash can cause that to happen.”

He’s survived by his wife of 49 years, Sandy; daughters Lisa, Madelyn, and Laura; and several grandchildren. His son, Wink Jr., preceded him in death. His children are from his first marriage, which ended in divorce in 1972.

Wink Martindale leaves behind a legacy of laughter, charm, and timeless moments that made game shows a beloved part of American culture.

Hollywood Icon Richard Chamberlain Passes Away at 90

Richard Chamberlain, the beloved actor who skyrocketed to fame as the dashing Dr. Kildare and later became the undisputed “king of the miniseries,” has passed away at the age of 90. His publicist, Harlan Boll, confirmed that Chamberlain died on Saturday in Hawaii due to complications from a stroke. He would have turned 91 on Monday.

Chamberlain first captured hearts in the 1960s as the charismatic young doctor in NBC’s medical drama Dr. Kildare, which ran from 1961 to 1966. His performance earned him a Golden Globe for Best Male TV Star in 1963, cementing his status as a global sensation.

Reflecting on his breakout role in a 2021 interview, Chamberlain recalled, “It took right off all around the world… It was my absolute, total dream come true.”

Beyond television, Chamberlain had a thriving film career. His standout roles included:

Octavius Caesar in Julius Caesar (1970), alongside Charlton Heston and Jason Robards.

Aramis in The Three Musketeers (1973), featuring Raquel Welch and Oliver Reed.

A key role in the Oscar-winning disaster film The Towering Inferno (1974).

Chamberlain dominated television in the 1980s, earning the nickname “king of the miniseries.” His iconic roles included:

John Blackthorne in Shōgun (1980) – A role that earned him another Golden Globe.

Father Ralph de Bricassart in The Thorn Birds (1983) – One of his most beloved performances, winning him yet another Golden Globe.

Jason Bourne in The Bourne Identity (1988) – The first-ever on-screen adaptation of Robert Ludlum’s bestselling novel.

Chamberlain continued acting well into the 1990s and 2000s, appearing in films and TV series like Birds of Prey, The Lost Daughter, and popular shows such as Will & Grace, The Drew Carey Show, and Desperate Housewives. His final credited role was in the 2019 drama-mystery Finding Julia.

Outside of acting, Chamberlain pursued music and theater, starring in My Fair Lady as Henry Higgins and appearing on Broadway opposite Mary Tyler Moore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Born in Los Angeles, Chamberlain was raised in Beverly Hills before attending Pomona College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He later served 16 months in Korea with the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of sergeant.

Chamberlain is survived by his longtime partner, Martin Rabbett. In a heartfelt statement to CNN, Rabbett shared, “Our beloved Richard is with the angels now. He is free and soaring to those loved ones before us. How blessed were we to have known such an amazing and loving soul.”

Richard Chamberlain leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable performances, cementing his place as one of Hollywood’s most enduring and versatile actors.

A dazzling piece of Hollywood history set a new record as Dorothy’s ruby slippers, worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz, sold for an astonishing $28 million (£22 million) at a U.S. auction on Saturday.

A Legendary Pair with a Storied Past

These iconic sequined pumps are one of only four known surviving pairs used in the 1939 film. The slippers have captivated audiences for decades, earning the title “Holy Grail of Hollywood memorabilia” from Heritage Auctions. Their final price shattered expectations, far exceeding the initial estimate of $3 million (£2.35 million).

Renewed Spotlight on a Classic

The sale coincided with heightened interest in The Wizard of Oz, sparked by the recent release of the prequel movie Wicked. Applause erupted in the Dallas auction room as the hammer fell on this record-breaking bid, making the slippers the most valuable piece of movie memorabilia ever sold.

Judy Garland was just 16 years old when she donned the slippers to play Dorothy Gale in the beloved musical adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The film’s producers famously changed the magical slippers’ color from silver (as described in the book) to ruby red, leveraging Technicolor technology to create a striking visual impact.

The Journey Home: “There’s No Place Like Home”

The ruby slippers played a pivotal role in the movie’s plot. Dorothy’s return from the magical land of Oz hinged on her clicking her heels three times and repeating the iconic line, “There’s no place like home.”

A Tale of Theft and Recovery

The pair sold at auction boasts a dramatic history. Loaned to the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, the slippers were stolen in 2005 when thief Terry Jon Martin smashed their display case. Mistakenly believing the sequins were real gemstones, Martin passed the shoes to an intermediary who ultimately discarded them.

Thirteen years later, in 2018, the FBI recovered the slippers in a sting operation. While the details of their whereabouts during those missing years remain a mystery, the theft was resolved in 2023 when Martin, then in his 70s, pleaded guilty and received a sentence of time served.

John Kelsch, curator of the Judy Garland Museum, reflected on the theft’s absurdity:

“To steal them without knowing their value as a national treasure seems ludicrous. The real worth isn’t in gemstones but in their cultural significance.”

A Legacy Preserved

Today, one pair of Dorothy’s ruby slippers resides at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. With their storied past and unmatched cultural significance, these slippers continue to enchant generations, proving that some treasures are truly priceless.
