Greece’s volcanic island of Santorini has been experiencing continuous earthquakes every few minutes, raising concerns about the possibility of a larger seismic event. Officials have strengthened emergency response plans, preparing for potential evacuations.

Authorities Prepare for Emergency Evacuations

The Greek Civil Protection Ministry has deployed a coast guard vessel and a military landing craft near Santorini in case an evacuation becomes necessary. At an emergency meeting in Athens, Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias emphasized the need for preparedness:

“We are obliged to draw up scenarios for better and for worse,” Kikilias stated during the televised discussion with security officials, scientists, and the prime minister.

Unusual Seismic Activity in Santorini

Greece is located in a seismically active region, but the frequency and intensity of these quakes are highly unusual. Scientists have recorded hundreds of tremors, ranging from magnitude 3 to 5, between Santorini and Amorgos since the weekend.

Experts cannot predict whether these quakes signal a larger earthquake or if they are part of a longer period of minor tremors.

“I understand the fear of what it means at the moment to be on a Santorini that is constantly moving,” said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, urging residents to remain calm.

Safety Measures and Travel Disruptions

To ensure public safety, authorities have implemented several restrictions:

Coastal areas are off-limits.
Schools on multiple islands are closed for the week.
Public events on Santorini have been canceled.
Access to popular clifftop areas has been restricted.

The earthquakes have caused thousands of residents and tourists to leave the island, leading to increased ferry and flight departures. However, rough weather has disrupted ferry services, making travel uncertain.

Strengthening Communication Networks

To support emergency response efforts, the Ministry of Digital Governance is deploying:

A mobile satellite communications unit to Santorini.
Generators and mobile telecoms units to Santorini, Anafi, Amorgos, and Ios.
A digital safety platform (mysafetyplan.gov.gr) with safe gathering points for emergencies.

Volcanic Activity Monitored but Not a Direct Threat

Authorities have detected increased volcanic activity within Santorini’s caldera (the island’s flooded crater). However, scientists confirm that this does not appear to be linked to the ongoing earthquakes, nor does the seismic activity pose an immediate risk of a volcanic eruption.
