Israeli settlers set fire to a mosque in the Palestinian village of Deir Istiya overnight, defacing its walls with graffiti and burning several copies of the Quran, in what appeared to be a retaliatory act following recent public condemnations of settler violence by Israeli military leaders.

A night of arson and defiance

Witnesses in Deir Istiya, located in the central West Bank, said settlers entered the town late Wednesday night, torching parts of the mosque and leaving behind Hebrew messages such as “we are not afraid” and “we will revenge again.” One message appeared to reference Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth, head of Israel’s Central Command, who had issued a rare denunciation of settler attacks the previous day.

Israeli soldiers were seen at the site Thursday morning, though the military did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The attack came just a day after Israeli and U.S. officials voiced growing alarm over rising settler assaults on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, a trend rights groups say has intensified under Israel’s current far-right government.

Mounting concern from Israeli and U.S. officials

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed concern that the ongoing settler violence could destabilize the region, warning of “events in the West Bank spilling over and creating an effect that could undermine what we’re doing in Gaza.”

In Israel, several high-ranking officials have publicly condemned the violence, calling it both unlawful and damaging to the country’s values. President Isaac Herzog described the recent incidents as “shocking and serious,” urging authorities to act decisively to stop the assaults.

Herzog said the acts of a “handful” of perpetrators “cross a red line,” and emphasized that “all state authorities must act decisively to eradicate the phenomenon.”

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir echoed Herzog’s remarks, saying the military “will not tolerate the phenomena of a minority of criminals who tarnish a law-abiding public.” Zamir added that such actions “divert the attention of our forces from fulfilling their mission.”

A pattern of escalating settler attacks

The arson in Deir Istiya followed a particularly violent episode two days earlier, when dozens of masked settlers set fire to vehicles and property in the nearby villages of Beit Lid and Deir Sharaf. According to the Israeli army, the settlers later clashed with soldiers and damaged a military vehicle.

Four Israelis were arrested, and four Palestinians were injured in the incident. Police said three suspects were later released, while a minor accused of arson and assault remains in custody. Authorities said investigations are ongoing “with the goal of bringing offenders to justice, regardless of their background.”

Rights organizations, however, argue that most cases of settler violence rarely lead to accountability. According to the Israeli human rights group Yesh Din, about 94% of police investigations into settler violence between 2005 and 2024 ended without indictment. Only about 3% resulted in convictions.

Historical context and worsening trends

Attacks targeting mosques and Palestinian property are not new. The same mosque in Deir Istiya was vandalized by settlers in 2012 and again in 2014, according to the U.S. State Department and the Anti-Defamation League.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that October marked the highest monthly number of settler attacks recorded since it began monitoring incidents in 2006. The agency said that since 2023, at least 3,535 Palestinians have been displaced due to settler violence and access restrictions — a sharp increase compared to previous years.

Palestinians and human rights groups say these attacks are part of a broader effort to push Palestinian residents off their land. In recent years, settlers have expanded beyond officially recognized settlements, establishing new farming outposts — often consisting of makeshift structures and livestock pens — that encroach upon Palestinian agricultural areas and water sources.

Government dynamics and impunity concerns

Critics attribute the escalation in violence to an emboldened settler movement supported by Israel’s far-right coalition government. Key figures such as Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who oversees settlement policy, and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who controls the police, are both long-time advocates for expanding Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not commented publicly on the recent spate of violence, though officials in his government have sought to portray the attacks as the work of a small number of extremists.

Palestinians, however, argue that systemic inaction by law enforcement effectively grants impunity to perpetrators. “These attacks are not isolated,” one Palestinian human rights observer said. “They are part of a broader pattern that aims to make life untenable for Palestinians in the West Bank.”

Calls for restraint and accountability

Israeli and international human rights organizations continue to urge Israel to prosecute those responsible for the attacks and to take stronger measures to prevent future incidents. The United Nations and the European Union have repeatedly called on Israel to protect Palestinian civilians and uphold international law.

Despite condemnations from both Israeli leaders and foreign governments, violence by extremist settlers remains a persistent challenge. Observers warn that continued inaction could deepen instability in the West Bank and further erode prospects for peace in the region.

Israel has recovered the bodies of three hostages from the Gaza Strip, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed Saturday, in what he called a “successful” military operation carried out by Israeli forces.

The recovered individuals were identified as Yonatan Samrano, Ofra Kedar, and Staff Sgt. Shai Levinson. Their remains were returned to Israel following a targeted operation led by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security agency.

“I thank our commanders and fighters for their determination and courage,” Netanyahu said in a statement.
“We will not rest until we return all of our abductees home—both the living and the dead.”

The Victims’ Stories

These latest recoveries bring the total number of hostage bodies retrieved this month to eight, as Israel continues both its military operations in Gaza and parallel efforts to confront Iran.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, a group representing families of those taken during the October 7 attacks, expressed both sorrow and a renewed sense of urgency:

“Our hearts are with the Keidar, Samrano, and Levinson families today.
Alongside grief, their return offers some comfort to families who’ve endured 625 days of uncertainty.”

The group emphasized that the fate of the remaining 50 hostages—31 of whom the IDF now says are dead—remains central to Israel’s broader goals:

“There will be no victory until the last hostage returns.”

Wider Conflict and Casualties

Israel’s military campaign in Gaza was launched in direct response to the October 7 attack by Hamas. Since then, the war has exacted a heavy toll on both sides.

According to Gaza’s health ministry, more than 54,677 people have been killed in the territory since the war began. The humanitarian crisis continues to deepen as fighting persists and efforts to secure the release—or remains—of hostages press on.
