The Enduring Charm of Japan’s Daruma Dolls: A Symbol of Determination and Success

When you step into the serene grounds of Katsuo-ji Temple, one of Japan’s most beloved landmarks, you can’t help but notice the sea of Daruma dolls scattered across the hillside. From the towering figures peering out from between tree branches to smaller versions perched on altars, these iconic red dolls are impossible to miss.

Located in the scenic Minoh National Park, just an hour outside Osaka, Katsuo-ji Temple has long been associated with success and victory. The temple’s history stretches over 1,300 years, and for the past century, it has been home to thousands of these talismans, which have become a cherished symbol of perseverance and good fortune across Japan.

Katsuo-ji is affectionately known as the “Daruma Temple”—a name that dates back about 100 years, when the temple began selling these lucky charms. The Daruma doll, a vibrant reminder of Japan’s culture and traditions, represents Bodhidharma, the 5th-century monk who founded Zen Buddhism. Legend has it that Bodhidharma meditated for years so intensely that he lost his limbs, an image captured in the doll’s rounded, weighted form that always returns upright when toppled—symbolizing resilience and unwavering determination.

For centuries, Katsuo-ji has been a spiritual retreat for emperors, shoguns, and ordinary people alike, all seeking blessings for victory in battles, exams, and business ventures. Even today, locals flock to the temple before major events, such as exams or important meetings, hoping for a boost of luck.

Unlike other lucky charms that promise wishes granted with little effort, the Daruma doll encourages an active role in achieving one’s goals. According to Marco Fasano, an Italian tour guide and founder of Tanuki Stories, the process of acquiring a Daruma is an interactive ritual that goes beyond simply making a wish.

“First, you think of a goal you want to accomplish, then you write your wish on the doll and paint one eye. You purify the Daruma with incense before taking it home with you,” Fasano explains. The key to the Daruma is constant reflection: every time you look at it, you’re reminded of your goal and asked, “What can I do today to get closer to achieving this?” The second eye is filled in only once the goal is achieved—a powerful symbol of hard work paying off.

Fasano’s own experience with the Daruma was deeply personal, having visited Katsuo-ji before taking his Japanese Language Proficiency Test. He emphasizes that the process isn’t just about passive hope—it’s about taking action.

“When you see so many people returning to the temple with completed goals, it’s a tangible reminder that you too can achieve your dreams if you put in the effort,” he says.

The Daruma doll’s distinct look—a round body, scowling face, and wide eyes—holds a wealth of symbolism. It’s not just about resilience. The doll’s thick eyebrows and beard represent cranes and turtles, animals revered for their association with longevity and good fortune in Japan. The bright red color further amplifies its auspicious significance, as red is considered a color of protection.

Beyond Katsuo-ji, Daruma dolls are also deeply embedded in other parts of Japan, including nearby Kyoto’s Hōrin-ji Temple, known as “Darumadera.” However, the heart of Daruma production lies in Takasaki, a town in the Gunma Prefecture, where about 80% of the dolls are crafted. The tradition there goes back over 200 years, with the Shorinzan Daruma-ji Temple starting the practice of selling them over two centuries ago.

At Katsuo-ji, visitors can choose between two types of Daruma: the Kachi-Daruma, or “winning Daruma,” for those setting specific goals, and the Daruma-Mikuji, or “fortune-telling Daruma,” unique to this temple. Instead of painting eyes, those who choose a Daruma-Mikuji ask a question before selecting their doll, which contains a scroll offering guidance to help them along their journey.

Despite the influx of millions of visitors to Japan each year, Katsuo-ji remains a somewhat hidden treasure. While Osaka is a bustling hub for tourists, the temple sees far fewer visitors compared to the likes of Asakusa Senso-Ji in Tokyo, which attracts around 30 million people annually. Katsuo-ji’s annual visitor count hovers between 800,000 and 1 million, with a significant portion of those visitors coming from overseas.

Fasano, who has lived in Osaka since 2023, believes that the city and its surrounding areas deserve more attention from tourists. “Osaka is often underrated. People think there’s nothing to do, but there are so many unique spots, like Katsuo-ji, that offer a richer cultural experience,” he says.

To attract more visitors and offer a deeper connection with the Daruma tradition, Katsuo-ji introduced a creative “stamp rally” in May 2024. This activity encourages visitors to explore the temple grounds, collecting stamps at six checkpoints that form an image—a metaphor for goal-setting, one step at a time.

For visitors, purchasing a Daruma at Katsuo-ji adds a layer of meaning to the experience. “Buying a Daruma here feels more powerful than picking one up in a random shop,” Fasano reflects. “It’s a reminder that achieving your goals is a journey—and you have to be intentional about each step.”

Daruma dolls have evolved into one of Japan’s most beloved souvenirs, symbolizing not just luck, but a call to action and perseverance. At Katsuo-ji, surrounded by the whispers of centuries-old prayers and the encouragement of countless others who have made their wishes, the Daruma doll becomes much more than a simple token. It serves as a companion in the quest for success—a reminder that while luck plays a part, true achievement requires effort, reflection, and determination.

As we bid farewell to the mythical Dragon, the world embraces the Year of the Snake on January 29, the first day of the Lunar New Year. For many, this ancient festival marks the beginning of a fresh chapter, and starting the year on a positive note is essential.

From indulging in auspicious foods to engaging in luck-enhancing activities, many people turn to the stars for guidance on what lies ahead. But what does 2025 — the Year of the Snake — have in store for you?

Understanding the Chinese Zodiac: More Than Just Animal Signs

The Chinese zodiac is based on a 12-year cycle, with each year represented by a different animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Your zodiac animal is determined by the year of your birth, so those born on or after the first day of the Lunar New Year in 2025 will fall under the Snake sign.

But the zodiac isn’t just about animals. There’s also a deeper system based on the sexagenary cycle, which includes 10 heavenly stems and 12 earthly branches. Each year combines an element (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) with an animal. In 2025, we have the Yi heavenly stem (Yin Wood) and the Si earthly branch (Snake), making 2025 the Year of the Wood Snake.

So, what does this mean for the coming months? Let’s dive in!

2025: The Year of the Wood Snake — What to Expect

Feng Shui consultant Thierry Chow, based in Hong Kong, offers valuable insights. According to Chow, 2025 will differ greatly from 2024. While the Yang Wood Dragon year focused on growth and rebirth, the Snake year is one of observation and patience — a year that could bring chaos and challenges.

“The Snake brings fire, with elements of metal and earth,” Chow explains. “This could cause clashes and conflicts, so it’s important to be cautious of accidents and remain aware of the world’s increasingly chaotic atmosphere.”

However, Chow is quick to add that while the year might seem challenging, it offers growth opportunities. The Snake, with its observant nature, encourages you to wait for the right moment before acting decisively.

Industry Insights and Travel Tips

For industries connected to the wood element (such as healthcare and paper), 2025 could bring favorable opportunities.

As for travel, the fortune star will land in the east this year, so exploring locations in that direction — whether near or far — could bring luck and positive energy.

Navigating Tai Sui: The Grand Duke of Jupiter and Your Personal Luck

In Chinese astrology, your animal sign’s fortune depends on its relationship with Tai Sui, the stellar deity that moves in opposition to Jupiter. If your sign conflicts with Tai Sui, you may face more disruptions than usual. However, the key to success is to remain mindful and prepared for shifts in energy.

For those seeking balance, visiting a Chinese temple and making offerings to Tai Sui can inspire positive thoughts. Chow recommends extra blessings for those born under the Ox, Tiger, Snake, Monkey, Rooster, and Pig signs.

Zodiac Predictions for 2025

Snake

The Snake is the protagonist of 2025, facing its Ben Ming Nian — the year of its own zodiac sign. Major changes are expected, and individuals born in the Year of the Snake should prepare for decisions related to love, work, health, and family. Chow encourages Snakes to embrace these changes, stay focused on health, and attend happy events to combat negative energy. “One happy event prevents three disasters,” she notes.

Horse

For those born in the Year of the Horse, 2025 promises no clashes with Tai Sui. Expect to receive more support at work, and if you’re seeking a partner, the year may favor romantic connections. However, the fiery nature of the Snake may cause imbalance, so Horses should focus on self-care and travel to restore their equilibrium. Autumn and winter will bring more luck.

Goat

The Year of the Snake will bring stability for Goats, but attention to health, especially digestive systems, is essential. Avoid risky decisions in both career and investments. “Be observant and cautious,” says Chow. The luck for Goats will improve in winter 2025.

Monkey

Monkeys will experience a challenging year with Tai Sui’s influence, leading to potential health and relationship issues. They may feel overwhelmed at work, but their metal element will help offset disturbances. Effective communication will be key to navigating the challenges. The first half of the year requires extra attention to health and work-related stress.

Rooster

For Roosters, 2025 continues the harmonious relationship with Tai Sui seen in 2024. This is a great year for romance, friendships, and collaborations. Expect success in relationships and partnerships, with the first half of the year being more favorable than the second.

Dog

After the challenging Year of the Dragon, Dogs will experience a more peaceful and stable 2025. “The elements will shift to become more harmonious,” Chow says. While health may remain a concern early in the year, things will improve by fall. Career and personal life will stabilize.

Pig

For Pigs, 2025 will be a year of change, as Tai Sui’s influence brings shifts and challenges. “Don’t stay still; travel and explore new opportunities,” Chow advises. Moving homes or changing jobs may be favorable. Though the year may be disruptive, it also brings financial opportunities and the chance to replace the old with the new.

Rat

Rats can expect financial success in 2025. The first half of the year will be particularly favorable for career growth and major decisions. Chow suggests focusing on the big picture and not getting bogged down by minor details. Amid a busy schedule, Rats should make time for themselves and loved ones.

Ox

Oxen will enjoy a year of partnerships, love, and new connections, thanks to their harmonious relationship with Tai Sui. However, Chow warns that Oxen should be cautious with finances and expect important lessons throughout the year. With Tai Sui in their favor, they are well-positioned to navigate these challenges.

Tiger

The Year of the Snake brings Xing Tai Sui, which could lead to challenges with work and relationships. Tigers may face gossip and unexpected obstacles, so they should avoid conflict and focus on health and well-being. While the first half of the year may feel overwhelming, Tigers will see an improvement in luck by the second half.

Rabbit

2025 will bring a boost of luck for Rabbits, with opportunities for career advancement and increased self-confidence. The year’s fire element aligns well with their wood-heavy nature, fostering new connections in work and romance. It’s an excellent year for pursuing new collaborations or business ventures.

Dragon

Having survived their Ben Ming Nian last year, Dragons can expect a more calm and healing year in 2025. The first half will focus on recovery, and by mid-year, things will begin to improve. Dragons are encouraged to focus on physical health, mental well-being, and a slow, steady pace throughout the year.

Conclusion: Slithering Into 2025

The Year of the Snake is one of observation, patience, and transformation. Whether you’re experiencing personal challenges or seizing new opportunities, 2025 offers plenty of chances for growth and reflection. Stay mindful of your interactions with Tai Sui and other celestial elements, and remember that changes, while challenging, can be the catalyst for great personal growth.
