The search is centered in Xaisomboun Province, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of the Lao capital, Vientiane, where seven villagers became trapped after entering the cave in search of valuable minerals. According to rescue officials and Associated Press reporting, the group was caught by a flash flood that blocked escape routes. One villager managed to get out and alert authorities, triggering a large-scale rescue mission.

Rising Water Levels Slow Rescue Efforts

Finnish diver Mikko Paasi, one of the first international rescuers to arrive at the site, told The Associated Press that recent rainfall had refilled sections of the cave, preventing divers from advancing deeper into the system. Water levels reportedly rose as high as the second chamber, forcing teams to suspend some underwater operations until pumping equipment can reduce flooding.

The situation has been further complicated by the failure of a drainage pump being used to remove water from the cave. Japanese diver Yoshitaka Isaji said the equipment breakdown has slowed efforts to regain access to submerged passages. Authorities have not publicly confirmed when repairs will be completed.

Rescuers believe the two missing villagers may be located beyond a narrow opening leading toward a possible sixth chamber within the cave network. That section has not yet been fully explored because of extremely difficult conditions and limited accessibility. Independent verification of their exact location remains unavailable.

International Rescue Mission Expands

The operation has drawn assistance from rescue specialists across Asia and beyond. Teams from Laos and neighboring Thailand have led the response, while divers from Finland, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, France and Australia have joined the mission. Officials involved in the operation say the multinational effort reflects the technical challenges posed by the flooded cave system and the urgency of locating the remaining missing villagers.

Five survivors have already been rescued after spending more than a week underground. One man was guided out by divers on Friday, while four others emerged on Saturday after water levels dropped enough to allow them to leave independently. Rescue workers said the men were transported to a local hospital and are recovering from dehydration, hunger and exhaustion.

Search Faces Growing Weather Risks

Rescue officials have warned that continued rainfall could further complicate efforts to reach unexplored sections of the cave. The region is entering a period of heavier seasonal rains, increasing the risk of renewed flooding and reducing visibility inside already narrow underwater passages.

The operation has drawn comparisons to previous cave rescue missions in Southeast Asia because of the hazardous terrain, flooded tunnels and dependence on specialized international diving teams. However, rescuers involved in the Laos mission have stressed that conditions remain highly unpredictable and that significant challenges remain before the fate of the two missing villagers can be determined.
