Small Plane Crashes in San Diego Neighborhood, Igniting Homes and Vehicles Amid Heavy Fog

SAN DIEGO — A small private plane crashed into a densely populated San Diego neighborhood early Thursday morning, sparking fires across roughly 15 homes and multiple vehicles, and forcing urgent evacuations as thick fog blanketed the area.

The crash occurred around 3:45 a.m. near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in the Murphy Canyon neighborhood, where many military families reside. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the aircraft was a Cessna 550, a small jet typically seating six to eight passengers. The number of people onboard has not yet been confirmed.

“We have jet fuel all over the place,” said Assistant Fire Chief Dan Eddy at a press briefing. “Our main goal is to search all these homes and get everybody out right now.”

Eddy described the scene as a “direct hit to multiple homes” with a “gigantic debris field” scattered through the neighborhood. Emergency crews moved quickly to evacuate several blocks and contain the fires.

Thick fog significantly reduced visibility at the time of the crash. “You could barely see in front of you,” Eddy said.

Terrifying Wake-Up Call for Residents

Christopher Moore, who lives just a street away from the crash site, described being jolted awake by a loud bang. “We looked out the window and saw smoke,” he said. He and his wife grabbed their two children and fled the house.

“As we were leaving, we saw a car completely on fire. It was definitely horrifying, but sometimes you’ve just got to drop your head and get to safety,” Moore added.

Investigation Underway

The FAA said the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation into what caused the crash. Weather conditions, including heavy fog, will likely be a key focus.

This isn’t the first time the area has faced such tragedy. In October 2021, a twin-engine plane crashed while preparing to land at the same airport, killing the pilot and a UPS driver on the ground, and damaging nearby homes.

As of now, there have been no confirmed reports of injuries or fatalities from Thursday’s crash, but authorities are continuing to assess the scene and account for residents. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.

Wildfires Near Jerusalem Trigger Mass Evacuations and National Emergency

Massive wildfires sweeping across areas near Jerusalem on Wednesday have forced widespread evacuations and shut down major roads, as emergency crews battle to control the fast-moving flames fueled by dry weather and powerful winds.

Officials are calling it one of the worst fire events in Israel’s history.

“This is perhaps the largest fire ever in the country,” said Shmulik Friedman, commander of the Jerusalem District Fire Department. He warned that winds exceeding 60 miles per hour are expected soon—conditions that could send the fires spiraling further out of control.

The flames are active on multiple fronts, with one of the most dangerous zones near the town of Neve Shalom, about 15 miles west of Jerusalem. Videos shared on social media show thick smoke engulfing parts of the highway as people fled on foot, some abandoning their cars along the road.

Authorities closed Route 1, the major highway linking Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, as the fires intensified—an especially painful disruption on Israel’s Memorial Day. Emergency responders from United Hatzalah were seen checking abandoned vehicles for stranded individuals, racing against time in hazardous conditions.

“We don’t know at this time what caused the fire. We don’t have even a bit of a clue,” Friedman admitted. “We are far from control.”

This fire follows another recent blaze in the same region, though no official connection has been made between the two.

Israel is seeking international assistance, with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar reaching out to nearby European countries for firefighting aid. According to Israel’s National Security Council, three aircraft from Italy and Macedonia are expected to arrive soon to help in the effort.

Defense Minister Israel Katz declared the situation a “national emergency,” urging all resources to be mobilized to save lives and contain the fires.

At least 10 communities in the area have been evacuated so far. Over a dozen people have been hospitalized due to the fires, according to Shamir and Kaplan Medical Centers.

Hadassah Medical Center, located just outside Jerusalem, has urged the public to stay away unless absolutely necessary. The hospital has already started discharging stable patients to make room for potential fire-related casualties.

More than 120 firefighting teams and 12 firefighting aircraft and helicopters are currently deployed. Despite their efforts, officials emphasize that the fire remains dangerous and unpredictable.

Firefighters Battle Hughes Fire Amid Evacuation Orders in Los Angeles County

Rapidly Expanding Wildfire Threatens Communities

Firefighters are striving to maintain control over the Hughes Fire, a massive and fast-moving blaze that erupted late Wednesday morning in the rugged mountains north of Los Angeles. The wildfire, located near Castaic Lake, has scorched nearly 16 square miles (41 square kilometers) of trees and brush, prompting more than 50,000 residents to evacuate or remain on high alert.

Containment Efforts Make Progress

By Wednesday night, approximately 14% of the Hughes Fire was contained, aided by calmer winds compared to earlier devastating fires in the region. Firefighting aircraft dropped tens of thousands of gallons of fire retardant, slowing the fire’s advance toward populated areas. Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone noted the situation has improved compared to conditions two weeks ago during the Palisades and Eaton fires.

Evacuations and Closures

Sheriff Robert Luna reported that over 31,000 residents have been evacuated due to the Hughes Fire, with another 23,000 under evacuation warnings. Thankfully, no structures have been damaged, and no injuries have been reported so far. Parts of Interstate 5, which had been closed for emergency operations, reopened Wednesday evening. Crews continue working to prevent the fire from spreading toward the interstate and nearby neighborhoods.

Critical Fire Weather and Response

Red flag warnings remain in effect across Los Angeles and Ventura counties until Friday morning, signaling elevated fire risk due to dry vegetation and gusty winds. Meteorologist David Roth reported wind gusts reaching up to 65 mph (105 kph) in mountain pockets, further complicating firefighting efforts. Over 4,000 firefighters are currently assigned to battle the Hughes Fire.

Community Members Respond

Residents, like nurse Kayla Amara, are taking precautions to protect their homes. Amara, who lives in nearby Valencia, expressed heightened anxiety as this fire threatens her community. “It’s been stressful with those other fires, but now that this one is close to home, it’s just super stressful,” she said while hosing down a friend’s property.

Concerns Extend Beyond the Fire

Meanwhile, Los Angeles officials are bracing for potential rain starting Saturday, which could trigger mudslides and debris flow in fire-scarred areas. Supervisor Kathryn Barger emphasized the importance of preparedness during a news conference, highlighting efforts to clear drainage systems and distribute sandbags to affected communities.

Health and Safety Warnings Issued

Amid ongoing firefighting efforts, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass urged residents to protect themselves from hazardous ash, which may contain heavy metals and arsenic. Public health officials advised wearing protective gear while cleaning up to avoid skin irritation or respiratory issues.

Federal and Legal Responses

The Hughes Fire comes amid heightened scrutiny of disaster relief efforts. President Donald Trump and other officials have suggested conditions for federal aid, sparking backlash from California leaders. Legal battles are also underway, with lawsuits alleging that Southern California Edison’s equipment caused the Eaton Fire. A judge has ordered the utility to provide data from circuits in the fire’s origin area.

Ongoing Investigations and Fire Updates

While the Hughes Fire remains a critical concern, firefighters have made significant progress on the Palisades and Eaton fires, which have killed 28 people and destroyed over 14,000 structures since January 7. Containment of the Palisades Fire has reached 70%, and the Eaton Fire is at 95%. However, officials are still investigating 22 active missing person reports related to these blazes.

Conclusion

The Hughes Fire is the latest in a series of devastating wildfires that have gripped Southern California, forcing thousands to evacuate and threatening homes and livelihoods. With firefighting efforts intensifying and weather conditions remaining unpredictable, communities are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.

Major Fire Breaks Out at One of the World’s Largest Battery Plants in California, Leading to Evacuations

A massive fire erupted Thursday afternoon at one of the largest battery storage plants in the world, prompting the evacuation of hundreds of people and the closure of part of Highway 1 in Northern California.

The fire, which sent towering flames and thick black smoke into the sky, forced authorities to evacuate around 1,500 residents from Moss Landing and the surrounding Elkhorn Slough area. As of Friday morning, some containment had been achieved, but the blaze remained active within the boundaries of the facility, according to Monterey County spokesperson Nicholas Pasculli. Most evacuees had sought shelter with family or friends, while a few dozen were relocated to a temporary evacuation center.

The fire occurred at the Moss Landing Power Plant, situated about 77 miles south of San Francisco. The plant, owned by Texas-based Vistra Energy, houses tens of thousands of lithium-ion batteries used for storing renewable energy, including solar power. While these batteries are crucial for energy storage, fires involving them can be especially challenging to extinguish.

“This is a disaster, there’s no way to sugar coat it,” said Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church in an interview with KSBW-TV. He added that he did not expect the flames to spread beyond the concrete structure that houses the batteries.

The fire is the latest in a series of incidents at the Vistra facility. In 2021 and 2022, the plant experienced fires caused by a malfunctioning fire sprinkler system, which led to overheating units.

As for the current blaze, the cause remains unclear. Vistra Energy has stated that everyone at the site was safely evacuated as soon as the fire was detected. The company emphasized that the safety of the community and its employees is its top priority, and an investigation will begin once the fire is under control.

“We deeply appreciate the continued assistance of our local emergency responders,” said Jenny Lyon, a spokesperson for Vistra Energy.

In response to the fire, the North Monterey County Unified School District announced that all schools and offices would be closed on Friday.

An emergency meeting of the county’s Board of Supervisors is scheduled for Friday morning to receive updates on the situation.

Live L.A. Fires Updates: Crews Make Progress as Victims Demand Access to Decimated Neighborhoods

Firefighters are making significant progress in combating the wildfires sweeping through L.A. County. However, as dangerous fire weather subsides, frustration is mounting among residents eager to return to their neighborhoods and assess the damage to their homes.

Palisades Fire

Containment: 21% contained as of Wednesday night, up from 19% earlier in the day.

Damage: 2,747 structures destroyed, with 484 more damaged. These numbers are expected to rise.

Fatalities: 9 confirmed dead.

Evacuations: Mandatory evacuation orders for Pacific Palisades, portions of Topanga, and Malibu, stretching from Las Virgenes Road to the 405 Freeway, and from the coastline to Calabasas and the Encino Reservoir.

Eaton Fire

Containment: 45% contained, an improvement from 35% on Tuesday.

Damage: 5,356 structures destroyed, 613 damaged.

Fatalities: 16 confirmed dead.

Evacuations: Areas under evacuation orders include unincorporated Altadena, Kinneloa Mesa, parts of Pasadena, Sierra Madre, and La Cañada Flintridge.

Firefighters’ Efforts

As winds began to calm, firefighters spent the day reinforcing containment lines and cooling hot spots. This ongoing battle aims to prevent embers from spreading into unburned areas. The two fires have already caused massive destruction, with over 12,000 structures affected, making them some of the deadliest and most damaging wildfires in California’s history.

Frustrations Grow Among Fire Victims

As the fires burn on, residents are voicing increasing frustration over being unable to return to their decimated neighborhoods. Many are eager to assess the damage, yet they are blocked from re-entering their homes until it is deemed safe.

Man Arrested in Little Mountain Fire

A man has been arrested in connection with the Little Mountain fire, which broke out on Wednesday afternoon in San Bernardino County. Fire crews were able to halt its progress before it spread beyond 34 acres.

Impact on Students: Education Disrupted by Fires

Thousands of students in the affected areas are dealing with the disruption of their education. Kira Weibel, an eighth grader who experienced the impacts of both the COVID-19 pandemic and the fires, is just one example of many students whose lives have been upended by these historic calamities. Schools have been closed, extracurricular activities canceled, and many are now grappling with loss and displacement.

Parking Enforcement Relaxed Amid Fires

With the fires raging across Los Angeles County, parking enforcement has been temporarily lifted to allow for easier access for firefighting efforts. However, residents are still cautioned not to park in restricted areas, as enforcement will resume once the crisis passes.

DWP Workers Threatened Amid Fire Efforts

Two incidents involving threats against Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (DWP) employees were reported after the Palisades fire. On Wednesday afternoon, an employee working on a downed electrical pole was threatened with bodily harm. Police were dispatched to investigate.

Palisades High School Forced to Move Classes Online

Due to fire damage, Palisades Charter High School has been forced to conduct classes online while searching for a temporary facility. Nearly 40% of the campus was either damaged or destroyed in the fire. Principal Pamela Magee stated that, although the main campus building remains intact, its condition renders it unusable for now.

Mayor Karen Bass Pledges Rebuilding Support

During a visit to the Disaster Recovery Center in West Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass spoke to fire victims and vowed to expedite the rebuilding process. She emphasized that those wishing to rebuild their homes should not be burdened by time-consuming permitting procedures. The center is run by FEMA and located in the former Westside Pavilion shopping mall.

As Los Angeles works through the devastation caused by these wildfires, the focus remains on both immediate relief efforts and long-term rebuilding for those who have lost everything.

Local News: Auto Fire in Ventura County Ignites Amid Intense Santa Ana Winds

Firefighters Combat 10-Acre Brush Fire Near Oxnard

A 10-acre brush fire broke out in Ventura County on [DATE], fueled by strong Santa Ana winds. The blaze, first reported around 7:45 p.m., is burning in the Santa Clara River bottom near N. Ventura Boulevard and Auto Center Drive, according to the Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD).

Wind-Driven Flames Escalate Quickly

By 8:30 p.m., the fire had spread to 10 acres, with wind gusts of 20 to 30 miles per hour propelling its growth. Earlier in the week, the National Weather Service had issued a “Particularly Dangerous Situation” Red Flag Warning for Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, forecasting strong Santa Ana winds from Monday through Wednesday.

Efforts to Contain the Blaze

Approximately 75 firefighters from the Ventura County, Oxnard, and Ventura Fire Departments are working tirelessly to contain the fire. Their efforts are supported by four water-dropping aircraft, including a Chinook and a Sikorsky Sea King.

Current Situation

Size: 10 acres (as of 8:30 p.m.)

Threat Level: No structures threatened; no evacuation orders in place

Cause: Unknown
Despite containment efforts, SkyCal footage revealed several spot fires igniting as embers were carried by the winds, complicating control efforts.

Stay Alert

Residents are advised to monitor updates from local authorities as weather conditions remain volatile. Firefighters continue to focus on preventing the flames from spreading beyond the riverbed.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

Mel Gibson Among Celebrities to Lose Homes in Los Angeles Wildfires

The recent Los Angeles wildfires have left a trail of destruction, with Mel Gibson being the latest celebrity to share the loss of his home. The Oscar-winning actor and director revealed that his Malibu residence was destroyed while he was away recording a podcast with Joe Rogan in Austin, Texas.

Gibson Reflects on Loss

In an interview with NewsNation’s “Elizabeth Vargas Reports,” Gibson expressed his emotional reaction to the devastating loss.

“Obviously, it’s kind of devastating. It’s emotional,” he said. “You live there for a long time, and you had all your stuff. I’ve been relieved from the burden of my stuff because it’s all in cinders.”

Gibson admitted feeling uneasy during the podcast recording, knowing his neighborhood was on fire.

“When I got home, sure enough, [the house] wasn’t there,” he said. “I told myself, ‘At least I haven’t got any of those pesky plumbing problems anymore.’”

He and his girlfriend had evacuated prior to the destruction, though she remained in California while Gibson traveled to Texas.

Describing the aftermath, Gibson said:

“I have never seen a place so massively burned. You could put it in an urn.”

Other Celebrities Share Their Stories

Gibson joins a growing list of celebrities who have lost homes in the wildfires, including Mandy Moore, Billy Crystal, Jeff Bridges, Paris Hilton, Milo Ventimiglia, and Ricki Lake.

Mandy Moore

Moore shared on Instagram that her Altadena home had been heavily damaged:

“Miraculously, the main part of our house is still standing. For now. It’s not livable but mostly intact.”

She also mentioned losing her garage and back house, posting photos of the devastation.

Billy Crystal

Actor Billy Crystal issued a heartfelt statement to CNN, reflecting on the loss of his Pacific Palisades home, where he and his family had lived since 1979:

“Every inch of our house was filled with love. Beautiful memories that can’t be taken away. We ache for our friends and neighbors who have also lost their homes and businesses in this tragedy.”

Despite the heartbreak, Crystal expressed hope:

“The Pacific Palisades is a resilient community of amazing people, and we know in time it will rise again.”

Jeff Bridges

Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges also lost his family beach home to the fires. According to his representative, Bridges and his loved ones are safe.

Ricki Lake

Actress and former talk show host Ricki Lake shared her grief on Instagram after losing her “dream home” in Malibu:

“It was our heaven on earth. The place where we planned to grow old together. We never took our heavenly spot on the bluff for granted, not even for one second.”

Lake revealed that the home held deep sentimental value, as she and her husband had married there three years ago.

A Community in Mourning and Resilience

The devastation caused by the wildfires has left countless families, including these celebrities, grieving the loss of their homes and memories. While the pain of the destruction is immeasurable, many have shared messages of hope and resilience, expressing gratitude for their safety and the bravery of first responders.

As the affected communities begin to rebuild, the spirit of unity and determination remains strong.

Elevated Wildfire Risk Across the Northeast: Key Updates and Warnings

Weather Conditions Increasing Wildfire Risks
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings for elevated wildfire conditions across parts of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Dry weather, low relative humidity, and winds are creating a heightened risk for the spread and ignition of wildfires in these areas. Specific regions under this warning include New York City, Long Island, northeastern New Jersey, and southern Connecticut.

Measures to Mitigate Risks

New York: A statewide burn ban is in effect until November 30.

Other States: Burning is strongly discouraged in New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

Caution Advised: The NWS recommends extreme care when handling potential ignition sources like matches, machinery, or cigarette butts. Ensure proper disposal and extinguishing to reduce fire risks.

Current Wildfire Developments

Jennings Creek Wildfire:

Location: Orange County, NY, and Passaic County, NJ.

Damage: Over 5,200 acres burned in Orange County (88% contained) and more than 2,280 acres in Passaic County (90% contained).

Impact: Winds on Saturday caused the fire to spread into Warwick, NY, prompting a voluntary evacuation for 35 homes.

Response: Helicopters dropped nearly 22,000 gallons of water to suppress the fire.

Fire Department Initiatives:

The New York Fire Department (FDNY) launched its first Brush Fire Task Force to combat the increase in brush fires around the city. The task force will focus on rapid response, cause investigations, and prevention strategies.

Earlier Alerts and Current Status

On Saturday, around 42 million people in the Northeast faced red flag warnings, including residents in Philadelphia, New York City, Hartford, and Boston. These warnings indicate fire danger due to warm temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds.

While winds subsided Sunday, reducing the need for new red flag warnings, the risk remains elevated.

Broader Drought Concerns

The Northeast is experiencing severe drought conditions:

New Jersey: Gov. Phil Murphy has issued a drought warning, urging water conservation.

Regional Drought: Over 58% of the Northeast is classified under moderate drought or worse, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Community Actions

Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and follow local advisories to minimize wildfire risks. Efforts to conserve water and prevent potential ignition sources are vital in combating these unprecedented dry conditions.

CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — A rapidly spreading wildfire driven by powerful winds has been raging northwest of Los Angeles for a second day, leaving a trail of destruction and forcing thousands to evacuate. The Mountain Fire has already destroyed dozens of homes and led to the evacuation of over 10,000 people as it grew dramatically in size within just a few hours on Wednesday.

Governor Gavin Newsom reported that the fire, fueled by heavy winds, now threatens 3,500 structures, including homes, ranches, and agricultural properties around Camarillo. As of late Wednesday, Ventura County Fire Department officials confirmed the fire was at 0% containment.

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning, indicating high fire danger, which remains in effect until Thursday evening. However, officials expect winds to ease by Thursday night.

Authorities across Southern California urged residents to remain alert for rapidly spreading fires, potential power outages, and fallen trees due to the infamous Santa Ana winds sweeping through the region.

The Mountain Fire erupted in a region already known for some of California’s most destructive wildfires. On Wednesday, thick smoke filled the air, darkening entire neighborhoods and limiting visibility for both firefighters and residents evacuating. Within five hours, the blaze expanded from less than half a square mile (1.2 square kilometers) to over 16 square miles (62 square kilometers).

Firefighters urged residents to evacuate immediately, with deputies reaching out to about 14,000 people as embers drifted far and sparked new fires.

Ventura County Fire Captain Trevor Johnson described the intense scene, noting how firefighting crews rushed to protect homes under immediate threat. “This is as intense as it gets,” Johnson said at a news conference. “The hair on the back of the firefighters’ necks, I’m sure, was standing up.”

Two people were taken to hospitals on Wednesday due to suspected smoke inhalation, but there were no significant injuries reported among the firefighters. Firefighting efforts included water-dropping helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft spreading fire retardant, though the fire remained uncontrolled. Ventura County fire spokesperson Andrew Dowd said that the exact number of damaged structures was still unknown.

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles County, firefighters battled another wildfire near Malibu’s Broad Beach, leading authorities to briefly close the Pacific Coast Highway as flames threatened luxury homes. Residents in the area were told to shelter in place while aircraft doused the flames of the 50-acre (20-hectare) Broad Fire. By late Wednesday, the Los Angeles County Fire Department announced that the Broad Fire was 60% contained, though two structures had been damaged.

With wind gusts forecasted up to 50 mph (80 kph) and humidity as low as 9%, parts of Southern California remain at risk of “extreme and life-threatening” fire behavior. On Wednesday, gusts reached 61 mph (98 kph), and red flag warnings were issued until Thursday across the central coast, San Francisco Bay Area, and northern counties expecting similar high winds.

California utilities have implemented preemptive power shutoffs to prevent sparks from electrical equipment during high winds, a policy introduced after past deadly wildfires. On Wednesday, over 65,000 customers in Southern California and another 20,000 in Northern California were without power as a preventative measure.

These fires are burning in areas devastated by past wildfires, including the 2018 Woolsey Fire, which claimed three lives and destroyed 1,600 homes, and the 2017 Thomas Fire, which destroyed over a thousand structures in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Southern California Edison has paid millions in settlements after its equipment was implicated in both disasters.

A massive wildfire fueled by strong winds has devastated communities in Southern California, destroying homes and prompting thousands to evacuate as firefighters struggle to contain the flames.

The Mountain Fire has grown rapidly, spreading across 16 square miles and forcing over 10,000 residents to flee. Driven by intense winds, this Southern California blaze poses an ongoing threat to homes and communities.

With powerful Santa Ana winds and low humidity, California is facing another destructive wildfire that has already displaced thousands. Firefighters are working around the clock as the Mountain Fire rages out of control.

As fierce winds push flames through Southern California’s Camarillo area, thousands of residents have evacuated, and authorities warn that dangerous fire conditions may continue.

Southern California braces for more wind-driven flames as the Mountain Fire tears through neighborhoods, destroying structures and forcing mass evacuations in the midst of challenging firefighting conditions.
