British Actor Simon Fisher-Becker, Known for ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Doctor Who,’ Dies at 63

Simon Fisher-Becker, the beloved British character actor known for his roles in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Doctor Who, has passed away at the age of 63.

Passing Confirmed by Family and Agent

Fisher-Becker’s husband, Tony Dugdale, announced his passing in a heartfelt Facebook post on Sunday. No details regarding the cause of death were disclosed.

Kim Barry, his agent at Jaffrey Management, also confirmed the news, expressing deep sorrow:

“I lost not only a client, Simon Fisher-Becker, but a close personal friend of 15 years. He helped me out enormously and was always kind, gracious, and interested in everyone.”

A Career in Film and Television

Fisher-Becker’s acting career began in the 1990s with appearances in British television series such as Hale and Pace and One Foot in the Grave. However, he gained widespread recognition for his role in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, where he portrayed the ghost known as the Fat Friar, who haunts the halls of Hogwarts.

His work extended to the iconic sci-fi series Doctor Who, in which he played the recurring character Dorium Maldovar from 2010 to 2011. He later reprised his involvement in the Doctor Who universe as a voice actor in the 2014 Doctor Who Online Adventures series, lending his voice to Gen. Nylan.

A Fan-Favorite at Conventions

Beyond his on-screen work, Fisher-Becker was a regular guest on the convention circuit, meeting and interacting with fans of the franchises he was part of. His enthusiasm and generosity made him a favorite among fans and colleagues alike.

Later Work and Voice Acting

From 2013 to 2018, Fisher-Becker starred in three seasons of the UK-based sci-fi drama Waterside. He continued his career into the 2020s, lending his voice to several productions, including the Sherlock Holmes mini-series, where he voiced Arthur Morstan.

His most recent work included the 2022 podcast Abnormal Stories and his final credited performance in 2024 as a voice actor in Jenny – The Doctor’s Daughter.

Fond Reflections on His Career

In a 2023 interview with BTG Interviews, Fisher-Becker spoke warmly about his experiences working in the industry:

“Most of the actors I’ve gotten to work with, especially the bigger names, have been utterly delightful and very kind. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the kindness of those people.”

His passing marks the loss of a talented and cherished actor whose contributions to film, television, and the sci-fi community will not be forgotten.

First Look at the Live-Action Remake of How to Train Your Dragon

The beloved animated film How to Train Your Dragon is getting a high-flying live-action remake, and fans got their first glimpse in a teaser trailer released on Tuesday, Nov. 19. The film features a star-studded cast, including Mason Thames as Hiccup, a young Viking who befriends a dragon, Toothless.

Joining Thames is Nico Parker as Astrid, Hiccup’s courageous love interest, and Gerard Butler as Stoick the Vast, Hiccup’s estranged father and leader of Berk. Nick Frost returns as Gobber, Hiccup’s mentor. The film also stars Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz, and Murray McArthur.

Plot Overview

Set on the rugged island of Berk, the story follows the long-standing feud between Vikings and dragons. Hiccup, the inventive yet often overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast, defies tradition by befriending Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unexpected bond challenges Viking society’s core beliefs and opens the door to a new understanding of dragons.

As the story unfolds, Hiccup, alongside Astrid and the quirky blacksmith Gobber, confronts a world torn by fear and misunderstanding. An ancient threat emerges, and Hiccup’s friendship with Toothless becomes vital in shaping a new future for both dragons and Vikings.

A Bold New Direction

The live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon is being directed by Dean DeBlois, who also directed the original animated trilogy. The animated films, based on Cressida Cowell’s bestselling books, were released between 2010 and 2019, each earning critical acclaim and Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature.

DeBlois promises that the live-action version will be even more intense than its animated predecessors. “The stakes are higher, with a fully photo-real dragon stomping around trying to kill him,” he told Empire.

How to Train Your Dragon will soar into theaters on June 13, 2024.
