Broader regional instability has also affected Red Sea trade and economies across the Middle East. For Egypt, disruptions to maritime traffic carry particular economic significance because the Suez Canal is an important source of foreign currency and revenue.

The changing security environment adds to the strategic value of Egypt’s position along major international trade routes and gives Beijing further incentive to maintain close relations with Cairo.

Cairo Pursues Greater Strategic Flexibility

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi has sought to preserve the country’s longstanding relationship with Washington while expanding cooperation with other major powers.

Egypt has joined BRICS, participates in China’s Belt and Road Initiative and has increased economic and diplomatic cooperation with Beijing.

The approach gives Cairo additional avenues for investment, trade and diplomatic engagement without requiring it to abandon established relationships with the United States or other partners.

The bilateral relationship has also acquired a more visible security dimension.

China and Egypt recently conducted joint military exercises involving Chinese J-16 fighter aircraft and French-made Rafale fighters operated by Egypt. The exercises highlight the expansion of defense cooperation between the two countries.

They do not indicate that Egypt is abandoning its longstanding military relationship with the United States, but they demonstrate Cairo’s willingness to diversify its defense partnerships.

That development adds another dimension to China’s expanding relationship with Egypt and is likely to remain relevant to Washington’s assessment of regional strategic trends.

China-Egypt Relationship Tests Beijing’s Influence

Beijing has presented its expanding Middle East role as centered on economic development, sovereignty and cooperation rather than military intervention. Chinese officials have also emphasized stronger ties with developing countries and support for what Beijing describes as a more representative international system.

Egypt’s position makes it a significant partner in that strategy, particularly as China seeks deeper engagement with countries across the Global South.

The relationship nevertheless has clear limits. Egypt remains closely connected to the United States through defense, economic and diplomatic ties, while regional governments generally seek to preserve flexibility rather than become dependent on one major power.

For Cairo, closer ties with Beijing therefore represent an expansion of strategic options rather than a straightforward choice between China and the United States.

What Happens Next

Xi’s visit is expected to produce further agreements covering economic, technological and strategic cooperation between China and Egypt.

The longer-term significance will depend on whether Beijing can convert its expanding economic presence into sustained diplomatic influence while Egypt continues to balance relationships with competing global powers.

As conflict and geopolitical realignment reshape the Middle East, the China-Egypt relationship is becoming an increasingly important component of both countries’ wider regional strategies.
