New U.S.-Backed Plan Faces Pushback from Aid Organizations

A new proposal from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a group backed by U.S. security contractors and former military officers, aims to take over the distribution of aid in Gaza, following a plan similar to Israel’s strategy. The foundation’s goal is to replace the existing distribution system run by the United Nations and other international aid agencies, a move that has sparked controversy and concern.

The Proposal and Its Supporters

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s proposal suggests creating four aid distribution hubs across Gaza to supply food, water, and hygiene kits to the population. The plan has the backing of the U.S. government and former U.N. World Food Program director David Beasley, who is considered for a leadership role. However, the proposal’s details remain under discussion, and it has not been fully endorsed by all parties involved.

Israel’s Control of Aid

Israel has blockaded Gaza for over two months, stopping the entry of essential supplies such as food, medicine, and fuel. The country insists that any aid distribution must be managed in a way that allows Israel to maintain control, particularly to prevent the diversion of resources to Hamas and other militants. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s proposal mirrors Israel’s concerns by centralizing aid distribution, but it has not clarified how it will balance humanitarian needs with security concerns.

The Role of Private Security

One of the most controversial aspects of the proposal is the involvement of private security companies to ensure the safe transportation and distribution of aid. The foundation plans to use armored vehicles and other security measures to protect supplies from being intercepted by militants or criminal gangs. Aid workers have expressed concerns that this could blur the lines between humanitarian work and military objectives, potentially putting civilians at risk and undermining the neutrality of aid efforts.

Concerns from Aid Workers

Several humanitarian organizations, including the U.N. and the Norwegian Refugee Council, have voiced concerns that this plan could displace large numbers of Palestinians and forcibly concentrate them around aid hubs. They argue that such an approach could be used to further Israel’s political and military goals, effectively reshaping Gaza’s population distribution in a way that might lead to further displacement and suffering.

Shaina Low, a communications adviser for the Norwegian Refugee Council, called the proposal “a solution to a problem that doesn’t really exist,” referring to Israel’s claims that Hamas diverts aid. Aid workers also worry that the private security element could undermine the principles of humanitarian neutrality, especially if contractors with military ties are involved in overseeing distribution.

The Future of Aid in Gaza

While the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation insists its approach is focused purely on delivering aid to those in need, critics argue that it could have far-reaching implications for both the humanitarian situation and the political landscape in Gaza. With the situation in Gaza continuing to deteriorate, the international community is closely monitoring the development of this proposal and its potential impact on one of the world’s most urgent humanitarian crises.

What’s Next?

The proposal is still in its early stages, and it remains unclear whether it will be implemented. However, the involvement of private security companies, the focus on centralized aid hubs, and the apparent alignment with Israeli policies have already raised alarms. As more details emerge, aid organizations and humanitarian groups are urging the international community to carefully consider the consequences of such a plan.

Europe’s Growing Push for Wartime Preparedness: Will Citizens Respond?

As the geopolitical landscape grows increasingly tense, European nations are ramping up their efforts to prepare citizens for the possibility of conflict. From survival guides to evacuation drills, these countries are taking steps to ensure their populations are ready for what could come next. But, the big question remains: Will people listen and take these warnings seriously?

In recent months, several European governments have rolled out sobering guidance, urging citizens to rethink their mindset and brace for potential conflict. This shift in focus aims to ensure Europe is ready for a worst-case scenario, especially in light of growing tensions with Russia.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte underscored the urgency, stating at a security conference in Brussels in December: “It is time to shift to a wartime mindset.” The message is clear: Europe must prepare for conflict and take steps toward resilience, especially as the threat from Russia continues to loom large.

European nations have begun offering practical advice to their citizens, from stockpiling supplies to creating emergency shelters. The European Commission has advised citizens to stockpile food and essentials for at least 72 hours in case of a crisis. This guidance, released in March, emphasizes the need for “preparedness” and “resilience,” crucial elements in navigating a potential war scenario.

Individual countries have taken additional steps to prepare their populations:

Germany: Last June, Germany updated its Framework Directive for Overall Defense, outlining procedures for citizens in the event of conflict. The document envisions a major transformation in daily life, with citizens expected to adapt to wartime conditions.

Sweden: Sweden has been particularly proactive, distributing millions of copies of an updated survival guide titled “If Crisis or War Comes.” The pamphlet provides step-by-step instructions on how to protect oneself, including going indoors, closing all windows and doors, and seeking shelter in underground spaces. Specific advice on how to survive nuclear attacks, manage anxiety, and even communicate with children during a crisis is also included.

Finland: With its long border with Russia, Finland has long been focused on its defense. In the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Finland has increased its preparedness efforts. The Finnish government boasts over 50,000 emergency shelters that could accommodate nearly 5 million people. Additionally, the country has issued updated guidance on how to prepare for disruptions in power, water, and telecommunications.

Despite these efforts, there’s no guarantee that citizens will embrace the preparedness plans. Claudia Major, a senior vice president at the German Marshall Fund, emphasizes the importance of these plans, not just in response to direct military threats but also to the “grey zone” between war and peace. This “grey zone” encompasses hybrid warfare and lower levels of aggression, which could destabilize nations without a full-scale conflict.

However, Major also notes the challenge of balancing preparedness with the risk of causing unnecessary panic. “We want people to be aware, we don’t want them to be freaked out,” she explains.

In countries with a historical memory of Russian aggression—such as Finland and the Baltic states—the threat is seen as more immediate and real. These nations have long understood the risks of Russian expansionism, and citizens are more likely to take the advice seriously. Major points out that these countries have learned from history and know they must be self-reliant.

On the other hand, nations like Portugal, Italy, and the United Kingdom may not feel the same urgency. Major highlights how Italy, for instance, is more concerned with threats from terrorism and instability in the Mediterranean region, while the UK, an island nation, has not faced a foreign invasion in centuries.

“The question is how do you change the DNA of a country?” Major asks, emphasizing that the real challenge may lie in convincing those less affected by the threat to take the necessary precautions.

Europe’s modern guidance on wartime preparedness isn’t without its challenges. Historical attempts at preparing civilians during times of crisis have been met with mixed results. A notable example is the UK’s “Protect and Survive” campaign, which ran from 1974 to 1980. The campaign aimed to prepare citizens for a nuclear attack, offering advice like how to create a fallout shelter in your home. While well-meaning, the campaign was often criticized for offering unrealistic advice, and it was even parodied in British media.

While the “Protect and Survive” campaign was mocked in popular culture, many experts believe that modern-day guidance—such as Sweden’s survival pamphlet and Finland’s extensive emergency preparedness efforts—is more realistic and takes into account the psychological impact of a crisis.

Claudia Major argues that preparing for conflict in today’s “grey zone” is crucial. She stresses that deterrence, defense, and societal resilience are essential components of modern security strategies. If European citizens are not ready and willing to support their nations in times of crisis, the continent’s ability to prevail in a war scenario could be severely compromised.

“Society must be prepared, not just militarily, but emotionally and psychologically,” she says. “If the society is not willing and not ready to support a war like the Ukrainian society is doing at the moment, we will not prevail.”

Europe is clearly taking significant steps to prepare for the possibility of war. However, the ultimate success of these plans depends on whether citizens truly internalize and act upon the advice. As tensions with Russia continue to escalate, the need for a united and resilient population becomes even more apparent. The challenge now is ensuring that Europe’s citizens are not just informed but also motivated to take action, should the worst come to pass.

The question remains: Will Europe’s civilians heed the call to prepare for the unthinkable, or will they remain unready in the face of an ever-growing threat?

Source: CNN – Europe wants to ready its citizens for war. Will they listen?

Massive Earthquake Strikes Myanmar and Thailand, Killing at Least Three and Causing Widespread Devastation

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar and neighboring Thailand on Friday, causing widespread destruction and killing at least three people in Bangkok. The quake, with an epicenter near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, was followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock, leaving devastation in its wake.

The full extent of casualties and damage remains unclear, especially in Myanmar, where an ongoing civil war and tight media controls make information scarce. However, early reports indicate significant destruction, with numerous buildings collapsing in multiple cities. Images from Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw, reveal destroyed government housing and emergency teams pulling victims from the rubble.

The Myanmar government has issued urgent calls for blood donations, particularly in the hardest-hit regions, as hospitals struggle to treat the injured. Infrastructure damage, including cracked roads, collapsed bridges, and a burst dam, raises concerns about how rescuers will reach affected areas in a country already grappling with a humanitarian crisis.

Near Bangkok’s popular Chatuchak market, a 33-story building under construction crumbled, engulfing the area in a massive dust cloud. Eyewitness videos showed panicked onlookers screaming and running for safety. At least three people lost their lives in the collapse, while 90 others remain missing, according to Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. Rescuers have so far pulled seven survivors from the wreckage.

As the earthquake struck, the sound of sirens filled central Bangkok, and major transport systems, including the city’s elevated rapid transit and subway, were temporarily shut down. The earthquake’s impact was unexpected in the Thai capital, which sits on a river delta and is considered at moderate risk for seismic activity.

Many residents and visitors were caught off guard by the quake. April Kanichawanakul, an office worker in Bangkok, initially mistook the tremors for dizziness before realizing what was happening. She and her colleagues rushed down ten flights of stairs, waiting outside for confirmation that it was safe to return.

Tourist Fraser Morton, who was inside a Bangkok mall, described the terrifying experience: “All of a sudden, the whole building started moving. People screamed and panicked. I tried to walk calmly at first, but when the building really started swaying, people were running down the escalators in the wrong direction.”

In Mandalay, Myanmar, the quake caused widespread destruction, including the collapse of the Ma Soe Yane monastery and damage to the city’s former royal palace. A 90-year-old bridge in the Sagaing region also collapsed, cutting off crucial transport routes.

The earthquake’s effects extended beyond Myanmar and Thailand, reaching China’s Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. Reports from Ruili, a border city in China, indicate building damage and injuries. Videos show debris-strewn streets and emergency teams transporting the injured to hospitals. In the city of Mangshi, 100 kilometers northeast of Ruili, the tremors were so strong that people struggled to stand.

The Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations are mobilizing aid, but downed power lines and infrastructure damage make access to affected areas challenging. Julie Mehigan, head of Asia, Middle East & Europe for Christian Aid, emphasized the dire situation: “This disaster has left people in desperate need of water, food, and shelter. Myanmar was already facing severe conflict and displacement before this heartbreaking earthquake.”

Myanmar’s military-led government declared a state of emergency in six regions, including Naypyidaw and Mandalay, though the country has been under emergency rule since 2021.

As rescue operations continue, authorities are bracing for further aftershocks and potential structural collapses. With Myanmar’s political instability and Thailand’s unexpected devastation, recovery efforts will be a long and arduous process. The world watches as these nations come to terms with the disaster and work toward rebuilding shattered communities.

Hundreds Evacuated as Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire Erupts

Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire erupted overnight, forcing the evacuation of nearly 300 families, while authorities warn that another 30,000 people in the region could be at risk.

The 12,300-foot (3,763-meter) volcano, one of Central America’s most active, last erupted in June 2023. Although there are no immediate reports of casualties, the eruption has triggered school closures and the shutdown of a key road connecting communities.

Volcanic Activity and Rising Danger

The eruption sent gas and ash high into the sky on Monday, prompting Guatemala’s disaster agency to issue urgent warnings.

Claudinne Ugalde, secretary of the disaster agency, emphasized the potential danger, stating, “Some 30,000 people are at risk in these three jurisdictions, and we are encouraging them to evacuate or self-evacuate.”

The biggest concern is lahars—a deadly mixture of ash, rock, mud, and debris—which can bury entire towns if they gain momentum.

Memories of 2018 Tragedy

The eruption has raised fears among residents, especially those who remember the devastating 2018 eruption, which killed 194 people and left 234 missing.

Isaac García, 43, a resident of El Porvenir, recalled the past disaster when he and his family decided to evacuate early Monday.

“We were a little worried because a few years ago the volcano became active,” García said, referencing the 2018 tragedy. Wearing a mask to protect himself from falling ash, he arrived at a shelter in San Juan Alotenango with his mother, wife, three children, and other relatives.

Government Response and Ongoing Threat

Located just 33 miles (53 km) from Guatemala’s capital, the Volcano of Fire remains a serious threat. Authorities report that while the current volcanic flow is weak to moderate, it is expected to increase in intensity.

Emergency shelters have been opened, and residents in high-risk zones are urged to remain vigilant as the situation develops.

Israeli Intelligence Failures: Investigation into October 7 Hamas Attack

An official investigation into Israel’s military preparedness and intelligence failures has revealed critical gaps that contributed to the devastating October 7, 2023, Hamas attack. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) report, released Thursday, outlines systemic intelligence and operational failures, including misinterpretation of Hamas’ activities, delayed response, and inadequate force deployment.

Key Findings of the Investigation

1. Intelligence Failures & Miscalculations

The IDF Intelligence Directorate failed to recognize Hamas’ shift in strategy, misjudging it as a pragmatic group rather than one actively preparing for war.

Indicators of an impending large-scale attack—including training exercises and operational plans—were dismissed as unrealistic or misinterpreted.

The report states that as early as 2016, Hamas had been planning a major attack, aiming to breach Israel’s borders, seize territory, and cause mass casualties.

By May 2023, Hamas had decided to launch its attack on a Jewish holiday, aiming to shock Israel and escalate into a broader war.

2. Military Unpreparedness & Response Delays

The IDF was unprepared for the scale and intensity of the attack.

The Gaza Division, responsible for defending the border, was overrun within hours, leading to a collapse in command and control.

The military’s response was delayed due to a lack of situational awareness, slow force mobilization, and insufficient troop deployment.

3. Leadership Accountability

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, who has announced his resignation in March 2024, accepted responsibility for the failures.

In a televised speech, Halevi stated:

“I was the commander of the military on October 7, and I take full responsibility. The failures are mine as well as those of my subordinates.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed that he had not yet received the investigation findings.

Impact & Future Implications

The October 7 attack, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths and more than 250 hostages taken, exposed severe security lapses that have shaken Israel’s confidence in its military and intelligence agencies. The report’s findings are expected to lead to significant reforms in intelligence gathering, military preparedness, and command structures.

As the Israeli government and military assess these failures, debates over accountability, security policy, and military strategy continue to unfold.

Firefighters Battle Hughes Fire Amid Evacuation Orders in Los Angeles County

Rapidly Expanding Wildfire Threatens Communities

Firefighters are striving to maintain control over the Hughes Fire, a massive and fast-moving blaze that erupted late Wednesday morning in the rugged mountains north of Los Angeles. The wildfire, located near Castaic Lake, has scorched nearly 16 square miles (41 square kilometers) of trees and brush, prompting more than 50,000 residents to evacuate or remain on high alert.

Containment Efforts Make Progress

By Wednesday night, approximately 14% of the Hughes Fire was contained, aided by calmer winds compared to earlier devastating fires in the region. Firefighting aircraft dropped tens of thousands of gallons of fire retardant, slowing the fire’s advance toward populated areas. Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone noted the situation has improved compared to conditions two weeks ago during the Palisades and Eaton fires.

Evacuations and Closures

Sheriff Robert Luna reported that over 31,000 residents have been evacuated due to the Hughes Fire, with another 23,000 under evacuation warnings. Thankfully, no structures have been damaged, and no injuries have been reported so far. Parts of Interstate 5, which had been closed for emergency operations, reopened Wednesday evening. Crews continue working to prevent the fire from spreading toward the interstate and nearby neighborhoods.

Critical Fire Weather and Response

Red flag warnings remain in effect across Los Angeles and Ventura counties until Friday morning, signaling elevated fire risk due to dry vegetation and gusty winds. Meteorologist David Roth reported wind gusts reaching up to 65 mph (105 kph) in mountain pockets, further complicating firefighting efforts. Over 4,000 firefighters are currently assigned to battle the Hughes Fire.

Community Members Respond

Residents, like nurse Kayla Amara, are taking precautions to protect their homes. Amara, who lives in nearby Valencia, expressed heightened anxiety as this fire threatens her community. “It’s been stressful with those other fires, but now that this one is close to home, it’s just super stressful,” she said while hosing down a friend’s property.

Concerns Extend Beyond the Fire

Meanwhile, Los Angeles officials are bracing for potential rain starting Saturday, which could trigger mudslides and debris flow in fire-scarred areas. Supervisor Kathryn Barger emphasized the importance of preparedness during a news conference, highlighting efforts to clear drainage systems and distribute sandbags to affected communities.

Health and Safety Warnings Issued

Amid ongoing firefighting efforts, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass urged residents to protect themselves from hazardous ash, which may contain heavy metals and arsenic. Public health officials advised wearing protective gear while cleaning up to avoid skin irritation or respiratory issues.

Federal and Legal Responses

The Hughes Fire comes amid heightened scrutiny of disaster relief efforts. President Donald Trump and other officials have suggested conditions for federal aid, sparking backlash from California leaders. Legal battles are also underway, with lawsuits alleging that Southern California Edison’s equipment caused the Eaton Fire. A judge has ordered the utility to provide data from circuits in the fire’s origin area.

Ongoing Investigations and Fire Updates

While the Hughes Fire remains a critical concern, firefighters have made significant progress on the Palisades and Eaton fires, which have killed 28 people and destroyed over 14,000 structures since January 7. Containment of the Palisades Fire has reached 70%, and the Eaton Fire is at 95%. However, officials are still investigating 22 active missing person reports related to these blazes.

Conclusion

The Hughes Fire is the latest in a series of devastating wildfires that have gripped Southern California, forcing thousands to evacuate and threatening homes and livelihoods. With firefighting efforts intensifying and weather conditions remaining unpredictable, communities are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.

Ex-Defense Chief Attempts Suicide Following Arrest Over South Korea’s Martial Law Case

South Korea is reeling from a political and legal storm after the arrest of its former defense minister, Kim Yong Hyun, over his alleged involvement in a controversial martial law decree. Authorities revealed that Kim attempted suicide while in detention, further escalating tensions in a case that has paralyzed the nation’s political landscape.

Failed Suicide Attempt in Detention

Kim’s suicide attempt occurred late Tuesday night at a Seoul detention center, according to Shin Yong Hae, Commissioner General of the Korea Correctional Service. Officials intervened in time, and Kim is now in stable condition. Justice Minister Park Sung Jae confirmed the incident during a parliamentary session.

Kim was arrested on allegations of orchestrating a rebellion and abusing power. His arrest marks the first formal detention related to the Dec. 3 martial law declaration by President Yoon Suk Yeol, a move that has drawn widespread condemnation.

Martial Law Sparks Political Crisis

President Yoon’s martial law decree, the first in South Korea in over 40 years, has been criticized as a power grab that froze the country’s political system, disrupted foreign policy, and unsettled financial markets. Yoon justified the decree as necessary to eliminate “anti-state forces,” a veiled reference to his liberal political opponents.

The Democratic Party, South Korea’s main opposition, plans to reintroduce a motion to impeach Yoon after a previous attempt failed. The president has since apologized for the decree but pledged to face any legal or political consequences.

Deployment of Troops and Police Under Scrutiny

Kim is accused of recommending martial law to Yoon and ordering troops to block lawmakers from voting on the decree. Despite these efforts, enough lawmakers managed to convene and reject the decree, forcing its repeal before dawn on Dec. 4.

Authorities are investigating whether Yoon, Kim, and others involved in the martial law violated laws against rebellion, a charge that carries a potential death sentence. Two senior police officials, National Police Agency Commissioner General Cho Ji Ho and Seoul Metropolitan Police Chief Kim Bong-sik, have also been detained for deploying forces to obstruct lawmakers’ votes.

Constitutionality in Question

Opposition leaders and experts argue that the martial law decree was unconstitutional, citing that such measures can only be enacted during wartime or national emergencies. Deploying military forces to disrupt parliamentary proceedings has been labeled as an act of rebellion.

In a parliamentary hearing, Army Special Warfare Command leader Kwak Jong-keun testified that President Yoon personally ordered troops to “break down the doors and remove lawmakers” from the National Assembly chamber. Kwak admitted he did not follow through with the directive.

Legal and Political Ramifications

Prosecutors now have 20 days to determine whether to indict Kim. Meanwhile, police have begun searching President Yoon’s office for evidence, though legal barriers related to state secrets could limit their investigation.

If the impeachment motion succeeds, Yoon’s powers would be suspended pending a decision by the Constitutional Court. If removed from office, South Korea would face an early presidential election. However, Yoon’s conservative party has proposed a “transition plan” to manage state affairs during an early election, a move criticized as unconstitutional.

National Fallout

The martial law decree and its aftermath have shaken South Korea’s democratic foundation. Observers worry about the long-term impact on governance, legal integrity, and the country’s reputation as one of Asia’s strongest democracies.

This developing case continues to dominate national headlines as South Korea awaits the next chapter in its unfolding political crisis.

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Valencia on Saturday evening to protest the handling of recent deadly floods, demanding the resignation of regional leader Carlos Mazón.

As protesters took to the streets, they chanted, “We are stained with mud, you are stained with blood,” expressing their outrage over the flooding that left more than 200 people dead and 80 others still missing. The floods, caused by torrential rain in October, devastated Valencia and surrounding provinces.

Protesters have accused local authorities of issuing flood warnings too late, worsening the impact of the disaster. As the demonstration unfolded, clashes with police erupted. Images from the scene showed Valencia’s City Hall covered in mud, and Reuters reported that protesters threw chairs and other objects.

Valencia’s mayor, María José Catalá, condemned the violence on social media, sharing images of broken windows and a video showing a fire being started. She stated, “Vandalism is not the solution,” and emphasized that the city had also been affected by the floods.

One of the protest organizers, Anna Oliver, told Reuters, “We want to show our indignation and anger over the poor management of this disaster which has affected so many people.”

The protests have been fueled by frustration over the slow and inadequate response to the disaster. Last week, during a visit to the town of Paiporta—one of the hardest-hit areas—Spain’s King and Queen were pelted with mud and other objects by angry protesters. Similarly, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was evacuated after objects were thrown at him during his visit to the region.

The floods have left thousands homeless, with streets still covered in mud and debris in many areas.

Carlos Mazón, leader of the conservative Popular Party, has defended his handling of the crisis, stating that his officials did not receive sufficient warnings from the central government and that the scale of the disaster was unforeseen. In Spain, regional governments are responsible for managing disaster responses, although they can request additional resources from the central government in Madrid.

Although Spain’s weather agency issued storm warnings on October 25, local authorities in Valencia did not send alerts to residents’ mobile phones until hours after the floods had already begun. The local emergency coordinator has since admitted she was unaware of the system used to send phone alerts.

Reports from local media suggest that as the flooding started, Mazón was having lunch with a journalist and did not attend an emergency coordination meeting until 7:00 p.m. local time (6:00 p.m. GMT). However, government sources later told El País that this was “irrelevant,” as Mazón was continuously updated on the situation.

The flooding was caused by a “Dana phenomenon,” a weather pattern that occurs when warm, moist air meets cold air, creating unstable conditions. Scientists believe that climate change played a role in intensifying the floods.

Israeli Airstrike Targets Senior Hamas Official in Khan Younis

On Friday, the Israeli military announced that it had killed senior Hamas official Izz al-Din Kassab in an airstrike in Khan Younis. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) described Kassab as one of the last high-ranking members of Hamas involved in coordinating activities with other groups in the Gaza Strip.

While Hamas sources confirmed that Kassab was a local official, they stated he was not part of the group’s decision-making political office. According to the IDF, Kassab was responsible for managing strategic and military relations between Hamas and other factions. They also claimed he had the authority to initiate terrorist attacks against Israel.

The airstrike also resulted in the death of Kassab’s assistant, Ayman Ayesh, with the IDF releasing footage of the operation.

In a separate development, Mossad Chief David Barnea addressed the families of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. He clarified that recent reports claiming Hamas had rejected a proposed ceasefire mediated by Egypt were incorrect. The proposal allegedly included a 12-day truce, with the first 48 hours designated for Hamas to prepare for the release of four hostages in exchange for approximately 100 Palestinian security prisoners held by Israel.

Hamas is expected to formally respond to the ceasefire offer next week. This ongoing conflict began on October 7, when Hamas launched a large-scale attack on Israel, escalating hostilities in Gaza since then.

Israeli Military Captures Senior Hezbollah Operative in Naval Raid

On Friday, the Israeli military announced the capture of a senior Hezbollah operative during a naval operation in the northern Lebanese town of Batroun.

An Israeli official reported that special forces apprehended the individual in what was termed a “special operation” and transported them back to Israeli territory. Lebanon’s state news agency stated that an “unidentified military force” landed on the beach at dawn, raided a nearby building, and took one person before departing via speedboat.

The raid has sparked outrage from Lebanese authorities. Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s office announced that he had directed the foreign ministry to file a complaint with the UN Security Council. Additionally, both the Lebanese army and the UN peacekeeping force, UNIFIL, are investigating the incident, with Mikati urging for prompt results.

Lebanese Transport Minister Ali Hamieh suggested that the raid might have violated UN Security Council resolution 1701, which was established to halt hostilities after the Israel-Hezbollah conflict in 2006. He was quoted by local media, asking, “If it is proven that the kidnapping took place via a naval landing, where is the implementation of Resolution 1701?”

Hezbollah has not commented on Israel’s claims regarding the captured individual, while Hamieh identified the man as a captain of civilian ships.

CCTV footage that surfaced online, which the BBC traced back to Batroun, seemingly shows soldiers leading a captive through the area.

The Israeli military provided limited information about the operation but confirmed that it involved Shayetet 13, a marine commando unit specializing in sea-to-land incursions.

Batroun, a predominantly Christian town located north of Beirut, has largely been spared from Israeli military actions in Lebanon thus far, as such operations have predominantly targeted southern Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley to the east, and the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Since Israel began its ground invasion of Lebanon on September 30, over 2,200 people have been killed in the conflict. The Israeli military reported that 38 of its soldiers have also died in Lebanon during this period.
