TAIZ, Yemen – Displacement across Yemen increased during the first full week of October as renewed fighting intensified humanitarian needs, while the United Nations warned that restrictions on key roads were disrupting the delivery of food, fuel, water and medical supplies to communities in Taiz.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) recorded 28,470 people displaced at least once between October 4 and 10, up from 21,798 in its report covering September 27 to October 3. The latest weekly total represents an increase of about 31%.

Taiz governorate accounted for 3,325 households moving into or within the area during the latest reporting period, according to IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix. The figures cover movement across specified districts and do not represent the number of people who fled Taiz city alone.

Separately, a United Nations briefing on October 12 warned that restrictions on key roads, including the Taiz–Aden corridor, were disrupting civilian movement, commercial supplies and humanitarian access. Authorities had reported rising commodity prices and growing shortages.

The latest figures offer a measurable indication of the worsening displacement emergency. They do not, by themselves, establish how many people in Taiz city lack access to food or medical care, or whether the city is completely cut off.

Displacement increases across Yemen

IOM’s latest rapid displacement update recorded 4,745 households, equivalent to 28,470 people, displaced at least once between October 4 and 10. The previous weekly report recorded 3,633 households and 21,798 people.

The two reports use the same weekly tracking framework, making them a useful comparison of recorded displacement during successive periods. The figures should not be interpreted as a complete count of everyone forced from their homes, since rapid tracking depends on available reporting and geographic coverage.

Within Taiz governorate, IOM recorded movement involving 3,325 households during the latest week, with the largest numbers moving into or within Al Maafer, Jabal Habashi and Ash Shamayatayn districts.

The figures include people moving within the governorate as well as those entering it. They do not establish that every household was displaced by fighting inside Taiz city or that all those recorded remain displaced.

The wider context is also important. Yemen’s latest escalation has caused substantial movement across several western and southern governorates. The United Nations said on October 12 that more than 217,000 people had been displaced from their homes since fighting escalated along the country’s west coast.

That broader figure covers displacement linked to the wider escalation, not Taiz alone, and should not be added to IOM’s weekly figures as though the totals represented separate populations.

Road restrictions threaten essential supplies

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned that restrictions on key roads were making it harder for civilians to move and for commercial and humanitarian supplies to reach affected communities.

The Taiz–Aden corridor is among the routes identified by authorities as disrupted. The United Nations said road closures were affecting supplies of food, fuel, water and medical goods, while authorities had reported sharp increases in commodity prices and growing shortages.

These disruptions can have consequences beyond the availability of goods in shops. Fuel shortages can affect transport and services that depend on generators, while delays in moving medical supplies can complicate the treatment of patients. The scale of any interruption to individual hospitals or services must, however, be established through current health-facility reports.

The available UN briefing does not establish that all routes into Taiz are closed. Restrictions can vary by road, security conditions and the type of traffic permitted. The distinction is important because a dangerous or intermittently usable route does not necessarily mean a city is entirely inaccessible.

The UN has called on parties to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure and to ensure the safe, rapid and unhindered movement of humanitarian goods and services.

Hospitals and vulnerable families face added pressure

The disruption to supplies comes as humanitarian needs increase. The United Nations said its humanitarian partners had reached approximately 143,000 people in Yemen with emergency assistance, including food, hygiene and cash support, as of October 12.

Aid delivery remains constrained by insecurity, access restrictions and limited resources. The UN also warned that displaced women and girls faced heightened risks linked to inadequate shelter, unsafe sanitation, food insecurity and limited access to health care.

These concerns illustrate why displacement figures alone cannot describe the full humanitarian impact. Families may move more than once, remain within their home governorate or struggle to obtain basic services even when they have not crossed into a formal displacement site.

The latest IOM figures do not establish how many displaced households lack food, clean water or medical treatment. Those questions require more detailed assessments of household needs, local markets and the condition of health facilities.

Nor does the available evidence establish that all warned-about medical services have stopped. Any claim that emergency surgery, dialysis, intensive care or neonatal services have been suspended would require direct confirmation from health authorities or affected hospitals.

A renewed threat of isolation for Taiz

Taiz has endured years of restricted access during Yemen’s conflict. Renewed fighting has revived fears that communities could again face prolonged interruptions to supplies and civilian movement.

On October 1, the UN special envoy for Yemen said he was alarmed by intensified fighting in Taiz governorate and reports of casualties, infrastructure damage and road closures affecting people’s ability to leave. He called for civilian protection and safe, unhindered humanitarian access.

The latest displacement figures and the UN’s October 12 warning indicate that the humanitarian consequences are continuing beyond the initial offensive. They do not establish the current status of every road or prove that the city has returned to the conditions of the earlier siege.

The military situation remains a separate question from the humanitarian data. The displacement reports document movements and needs; they do not independently establish control of every route or verify the claims of the parties fighting around the city.

Humanitarian access remains the immediate test

The latest figures show an increase in recorded displacement across Yemen, while the United Nations warns that road restrictions are disrupting supplies and assistance in Taiz. Together, these developments point to growing pressure on civilians and relief operations.

The immediate test is whether humanitarian agencies and commercial suppliers can maintain access as fighting continues. Further displacement updates, verified information on route availability and direct assessments of food stocks and medical services will be needed to determine whether shortages are worsening and which communities are most affected.

Until those assessments are available, the evidence supports concern over rising displacement and disrupted access, but not a claim that Taiz is completely isolated or that all essential services have collapsed.

KINSHASA, Congo (Journos News) – Authorities in eastern Congo have uncovered mass graves containing at least 171 bodies in areas recently vacated by the M23 rebel group, raising concerns over continuing violence despite ongoing U.S.-mediated peace initiatives. The discoveries highlight the enduring instability and humanitarian toll in the region.

South-Kivu province Governor Jean-Jacques Purusi reported that two mass graves were identified on the outskirts of Uvira, a city near the Congolese-Burundian border. One site in Kiromoni held approximately 30 bodies, while another in Kavimvira contained 141. Purusi said the victims were suspected by M23 of ties to the Congolese army or pro-government militias.

Local civil society groups also confirmed the graves’ discovery. Yves Ramadhani, vice president of the Executive Secretariat of the Local Network for the Protection of Civilians, said his organization was blocked from accessing the sites by the Congolese military. He indicated that evidence points to M23 rebels as the perpetrators.

Violence and Displacement in Uvira

M23, a predominantly Tutsi rebel group, captured Uvira in December during a swift offensive that killed over 1,500 people and displaced roughly 300,000, according to local authorities. The group subsequently announced a withdrawal, framing it as a “unilateral trust-building measure” requested by U.S. mediators to support the peace process.

Both M23 and Congolese forces have faced repeated allegations of extrajudicial killings and human rights abuses from international observers and rights organizations. Despite the peace efforts, armed clashes continue across eastern Congo, claiming both civilian and military lives.

Regional Dimensions of the Conflict

International observers, including the United States and U.N. experts, have accused neighboring Rwanda of backing M23. Since 2021, the group has expanded from a few hundred fighters to an estimated 6,500, according to U.N. reports.

Eastern Congo is home to more than 100 armed groups vying for control of the region’s mineral wealth. The conflict has driven one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, with over 7 million people displaced, according to the U.N. Refugee Agency.

Negotiations between the Congolese government, rebels, and regional actors continue under U.S. facilitation, but intermittent fighting underscores the fragile nature of peace in the region. The discovery of mass graves may further complicate reconciliation efforts and raise urgent questions about accountability and civilian protection.

Gaza Aid Ship Catches Fire After Alleged Israeli Drone Attack Near Malta

An aid ship en route to Gaza reportedly caught fire early Friday following an alleged drone attack in international waters near Malta, according to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), the group organizing the mission. The group believes Israel was behind the strike, though no evidence has been publicly provided, and Israeli officials have declined to comment.

The vessel, named The Conscience, was carrying humanitarian supplies and activists when it caught fire shortly after midnight local time. The ship issued a distress signal, with the FFC reporting a hole in the hull and fears of it sinking. Malta’s government confirmed the fire and said it had been extinguished. No injuries were reported.

“There is a hole in the vessel right now and the ship is sinking,” FFC press officer Yasemin Acar told CNN.

A tugboat was dispatched to assist, but all crew members reportedly refused to board it, opting instead to continue fighting the fire on board.

Malta reported 16 people were aboard — 12 crew and 4 civilians — though FFC initially claimed 30 were on the ship. The vessel had not yet reached Malta, where more activists, including climate activist Greta Thunberg and retired U.S. Army Col. Mary Ann Wright, were scheduled to join before the voyage to Gaza.

FFC accused Israel of targeting the vessel, saying it was attacked twice by drones. Videos shared by the group show flames and smoke, along with the sound of explosions. CNN could not independently verify the footage.

Activist Mary Ann Wright expressed disbelief at the incident, telling CNN:
“Who would send drones to bomb a ship that is anchoring off Malta? Anyone could have been on that boat.”

FFC called for international accountability, urging governments to summon Israeli diplomats and investigate what it calls violations of international law.

Speaking to Reuters from Malta, Thunberg condemned the blockade on Gaza and emphasized the mission’s goal:
“For two months now, not a single bottle of water has entered Gaza. It’s a systematic starvation of 2 million people,” she said.

She added that the ship remains at anchor because moving it could cause it to take on water and sink.

The incident comes amid a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israel imposed a full blockade on the region in March, cutting off food, medicine, and other aid to over 2 million residents. The World Food Programme recently warned its warehouses are empty, and remaining food in local markets is unaffordable for most.

Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, urged authorities to protect the vessel and investigate the incident.

In 2010, a similar flotilla headed to Gaza was raided by Israeli forces in international waters, resulting in nine deaths and international condemnation. The FFC says it kept this latest mission under media blackout to avoid sabotage.

While the Israeli military remains silent, flight-tracking data showed an Israeli Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft flying near Malta hours before the alleged attack, though it never landed on the island. The plane later returned to Israel.

Former U.S. Army explosives expert Trevor Ball told CNN that photos of the damaged ship appear consistent with two small blast munitions.

Despite the incident, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition vows to continue its mission:
“What is certain is that we human rights activists will continue to do everything in our power to do our part,” said Thunberg.

US-Israel Panel to Investigate Civilian Casualties in Gaza, First Meeting Set for December

The Biden administration has announced that a U.S.-Israel panel will hold its first meeting in early December to address reports of civilian harm during the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This meeting, however, comes more than a month later than the U.S. initially requested, which was for the panel to be established by the end of October.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated that the panel will focus on gathering information regarding incidents involving American-made or -supplied weapons, which have been implicated in civilian casualties. The goal, Miller explained, is to assist the State Department in evaluating the use of U.S.-provided weapons and to inform potential U.S. policy decisions related to the war.

This panel follows the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, which triggered Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza. The conflict, which has lasted for weeks, has caused widespread devastation. Experts warn that famine may already be affecting northern Gaza, with Israel’s air and ground offensives leading to hundreds of deaths and forcing tens of thousands to flee their homes.

In response to worsening humanitarian conditions, U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, sent a letter to Israeli leaders in October, urging them to improve humanitarian conditions in Gaza. The letter warned that the U.S. might restrict some weapons systems to Israel if progress was not made within 30 days. However, that deadline passed without any concrete decisions, and while some positive steps were noted, Israel has yet to meet the full criteria laid out by the U.S.

Aid organizations have reported that the situation in Gaza has continued to deteriorate, citing incidents such as the theft of nearly 100 trucks carrying vital supplies, which led to soaring food prices and severe shortages, particularly in central Gaza. Most of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been displaced, and many are now living in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions in tent camps.

Miller acknowledged these developments, pointing to a breakdown in law and order in Gaza and emphasizing the need for an end to the fighting. He stressed that a sustainable resolution to the crisis could only be achieved with a new governance and security framework in Gaza, which would address the root issues behind the ongoing conflict.

Israel’s Commitment to Preventing Iran’s Nuclear Weapons Development

Netanyahu vows to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons following IDF strikes

During the opening session of the Knesset’s winter assembly, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized Israel’s firm stance against Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons. He highlighted a recent airstrike by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) that targeted Iran’s conventional military assets, including its facilities for producing antiballistic missiles.

“Stopping Iran’s nuclear program is our top priority. While I cannot disclose all our strategies and actions, it is a crucial focus for us,” Netanyahu stated.

He outlined a long-term strategy aimed at dismantling what he referred to as the “axis of evil,” cutting off Iran’s military capabilities both in the South and North. Netanyahu stressed the importance of imposing severe consequences on Iran and its allies, asserting, “I have not given up on this central goal, and we will not give up.”

Netanyahu faced criticism for not ordering a strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, especially as the Biden administration publicly advised against such actions. Critics argue that he is yielding to U.S. pressure, compromising Israel’s strategic interests. In his speech, Netanyahu defended his position, asserting that the recent airstrike is a significant setback for Iran, which poses threats to Israel, the region, and beyond.

“Iran aims to build a stockpile of nuclear weapons to destroy us and is developing long-range intercontinental missiles,” Netanyahu warned, noting that Iran is establishing a missile production industry.

According to Netanyahu, Israel serves as a barrier to Iran’s ambitions, stating that if Israel were to fall, the Middle East would also be at risk. “But we will not fall. We will succeed, and the world will be safer,” he said.

He placed Israel’s struggle against Iran within a broader historical context, mentioning that while Pan-Arabism initially threatened Israel, the country ultimately overcame assaults from Arab armies and established peace with neighboring countries like Egypt and Jordan. Now, he argues, the Islamic Republic poses a new threat, aspiring to create a regional empire that excludes Israel.

Netanyahu described Iran’s strategy to eliminate Israel as resting on three pillars: proxy attacks on Israel, ballistic missile development, and nuclear weapons acquisition. He noted that over the past year, the IDF has significantly weakened Iranian proxies, such as Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, while also damaging Iran’s missile capabilities.

Reflecting on the past year since the October 7 attacks—where over 1,200 people were killed and many taken hostage—Netanyahu acknowledged that Israel had faced a major setback but had managed to regroup and achieve military successes that are reshaping the Middle East.

He likened the current situation to a modern-day War of Independence, recalling that in 1948, Israel fought against seven armies. Today, he noted, Israel faces threats from multiple fronts.

Netanyahu also expressed condolences to families who lost loved ones during the October 7 attacks and praised the IDF soldiers for their bravery. He reaffirmed that the main goals of the ongoing conflict with Hamas are to dismantle the organization and secure the return of 101 remaining hostages.

He committed to using every possible means to bring all captives home, both the living and deceased. Additionally, he emphasized Israel’s determination to establish safe conditions for residents in the South and North to return to their homes, which he described as “absolute victory.”

Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s commitment to making its own security decisions, despite ongoing discussions with the U.S. “The critical decisions regarding our security, including our goals and objectives, are determined by us,” he stated.

Regarding the recent airstrike on Iran’s military sites, Netanyahu announced that the IDF successfully struck numerous military targets throughout Iran. “We have shown that our reach extends to any place where threats against Israel arise. We significantly impaired Iran’s defense systems and its missile production capabilities,” he said.

He emphasized that the IDF’s targets were not merely symbolic but rather substantial military installations, stating, “We delivered a serious blow to these industrial death factories.”
