Chile’s navy confirmed the driver was an off-duty service member and said it was cooperating with investigators to determine what caused the crash.

Driver Detained After Market Crash

According to the navy, the vehicle plowed into the market, killing several people and injuring others with varying degrees of severity.

Officials did not immediately release a confirmed death toll. However, local media reported that at least six people were killed.

Videos circulating on social media appeared to show the vehicle crashing through market stalls. Other footage showed police escorting the driver away as angry bystanders shouted and chased after him.

Police detained the driver, who remains the only person in custody in connection with the incident.

Investigation Underway

Interior Undersecretary Máximo Pavez said the driver tested negative in a breathalyzer test.

Col. Jorge Guaita, police prefect for Viña del Mar, said the driver told investigators he could not remember what happened.

“The cause of the incident has not yet been determined,” Guaita told reporters.

According to witness statements cited by police, the vehicle was traveling in the correct direction but at a high speed before mounting the sidewalk.

It then spun before crashing into a bus shelter, which brought it to a stop.

“Fortunately, the bus stop brought it to a halt. Otherwise, it might have continued forward and caused even more damage,” Guaita said.

Meanwhile, some witnesses told local media the driver may have lost control after colliding with another vehicle.

Injured Remain in Stable Condition

Officials at Gustavo Fricke Hospital said five injured people, including two babies, were admitted with traumatic injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Two other injured people received treatment and were later discharged.

“At this stage of the evaluation, they are stable and out of life-threatening danger, but of course they are still awaiting the completion of all the examinations required in these cases,” said Denise Cataldo, the hospital’s deputy director.

Emergency responders, including police officers, firefighters and paramedics, treated numerous victims at the scene.

President Expresses Condolences

President José Antonio Kast said the tragedy had left the country in mourning.

“The entire country” is mourning, Kast wrote on X, adding that state institutions were working to assist victims and determine responsibility for the crash.

The Caupolicán market, located in the upper part of Viña del Mar, operates every Thursday and Sunday. It includes more than 1,000 stalls and numerous informal vendors, attracting large crowds.

Authorities continue investigating what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway and crash into the busy marketplace.

Located on a mountaintop in Chile, the observatory will capture hundreds of images every night for the next 10 years. Researchers say the repeated observations will help detect faint celestial objects that previous surveys could not observe.

The project is expected to produce one of the largest astronomical datasets ever assembled. Scientists around the world will use the observations to study billions of stars in the Milky Way and billions of galaxies beyond it.

“We’re going to see large numbers of scientists across the world working with this data set, studying the universe in a way that they haven’t been able to before,” said Phil Marshall, the observatory’s deputy director of operations.

Survey Designed for Repeated Sky Observations

Unlike many telescopes that concentrate on individual targets, the Rubin Observatory will repeatedly scan large sections of the southern sky. As a result, astronomers expect to identify faint objects that have previously escaped detection.

The repeated imaging will also allow researchers to monitor how celestial objects change over time. In addition, the observatory’s digital camera can capture hundreds of images each night, providing a continuous stream of scientific data throughout the survey.

Researchers Aim to Expand the Cosmic Census

Scientists hope the observations will create one of the most comprehensive maps of the universe ever produced.

The survey will record billions of stars across the Milky Way as well as billions of distant galaxies. Researchers expect these observations to improve studies of how galaxies form, evolve, and cluster over billions of years.

Furthermore, repeated observations may uncover previously unseen objects, offering new opportunities to examine the large-scale structure of the universe.

Observatory Ready After Instrument Calibration

The Rubin Observatory released its first public images last year, including detailed views of the Trifid Nebula and Lagoon Nebula, both located thousands of light-years from Earth.

Since then, engineers and researchers have calibrated the observatory’s instruments to achieve the depth and precision required for the full survey. Those preparations have now been completed, allowing routine scientific observations to begin.

Dark Matter and Dark Energy Remain Major Research Goals

In addition to mapping the cosmos, researchers hope the survey will provide new evidence about two of astronomy’s biggest mysteries: dark matter and dark energy.

The observatory is named after astronomer Vera Rubin, whose research provided early evidence that an unseen form of matter influences the motion of galaxies.

Although researchers expect the new observations to offer additional clues about dark matter and dark energy, they have not suggested that the survey will provide definitive answers. Instead, the data may help scientists better understand how these poorly understood components influence the evolution of the universe.

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy. Researchers expect the decade-long project to become one of the most valuable astronomical resources for the global scientific community.

Although regional homicide rates have generally declined over the past decade, several countries continue to experience significant violence linked to organized crime.

Data from InSight Crime indicated that Latin America and the Caribbean recorded a combined homicide rate decline of more than 5% last year compared with 2024, averaging roughly 17.6 killings per 100,000 residents. However, several countries have moved in the opposite direction.

Authorities in Peru recorded approximately 2,400 homicides last year, while Colombia reported 14,780 killings. Ecuador experienced a 31% increase in murders year over year, reaching 9,216 cases.

Officials and researchers have linked much of the violence to drug trafficking networks, prison gang conflicts and expanding criminal organizations operating across national borders.

The challenge has become particularly difficult for left-leaning governments that have struggled with sluggish economic growth, corruption controversies and unmet reform expectations in recent years.

Even some progressive leaders have adopted tougher rhetoric or security measures in response to public concerns. Examples cited in recent political debates include emergency anti-gang measures in Guatemala and statements from regional leaders suggesting elements of Bukele’s approach deserve examination.

Campaign Promises Face Governing Constraints

Despite their electoral appeal, security-focused campaign pledges have often encountered obstacles once candidates take office.

In Ecuador, President Daniel Noboa entered office promising major anti-crime initiatives, including large prison projects and other aggressive security measures. Some proposals were later scaled back or delayed as his administration confronted financial limitations and institutional challenges.
