U.S. veto on Gaza ceasefire highlights global frustration at U.N. Security Council meeting

Published: September 24, 2025, 14:00 EDT

At a special United Nations Security Council meeting this week, the United States once again found itself at odds with much of the world over how to address the war in Gaza and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While most nations pushed for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian relief, and recognition of Palestinian statehood, Washington continued to shield Israel from international pressure.

The session underscored a widening divide between the U.S. and its allies on the global stage, highlighting growing frustration with the use of American veto power to block ceasefire resolutions.

International Calls for Ceasefire

Delegates from across the globe condemned the ongoing war in Gaza, which began after Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The conflict has since killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, displaced nearly 90% of the population, and left much of the territory in ruins.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar described Gaza as “a graveyard for humanity as well as for the global conscience,” urging immediate international action to halt the violence. Many representatives echoed his call for a ceasefire and increased humanitarian assistance, warning of the dire consequences of continued inaction.

Despite near-unanimous support, the United States has repeatedly blocked efforts to adopt such measures. Washington argues that recent resolutions have failed to adequately condemn Hamas and insists the focus should remain on dismantling the group.

U.S. Position and Veto Power

The United States remains firm in its position, citing security concerns and the need to maintain pressure on Hamas. Last week, the U.S. was the only country to vote against a ceasefire resolution supported by all 14 other Security Council members.

American officials also oppose recent moves by France and other nations to recognize Palestinian statehood, arguing that recognition should come only as part of a negotiated peace agreement. As a permanent member of the Security Council, the U.S. holds veto power, effectively blocking any path toward full Palestinian membership at the U.N.

This stance has left Washington increasingly isolated, even among long-standing allies, many of whom are pressing for a two-state solution to end the cycle of violence.

Mounting Global Frustration

Since the start of the Gaza war, the Security Council has convened more than 80 times to debate ceasefire proposals, yet progress remains stalled. Both the Biden and Trump administrations have exercised veto power, drawing criticism from diplomats who question the council’s credibility if one permanent member can consistently block initiatives supported by the majority.

Diplomatic frustration was evident in speeches from European leaders. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stressed that ending the war in Gaza should be the “bare minimum” expected of the Security Council. “Last week, 14 members of this council were willing to do this. We hope that this can soon become all 15,” he said.

The Absent Players

Israel was notably absent from the session due to the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah. The U.S., meanwhile, sent its ambassador to represent the delegation instead of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is in New York for high-level meetings.

U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz criticized the timing of the meeting, calling it “regrettable” and accusing other members of using the council to “reward Hamas for refusing to surrender.” He argued that international backing for Palestinian demands has hindered ceasefire negotiations, blaming outside pressure rather than recent Israeli military actions.

Israeli Government Response

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated that his government may respond to international recognition of Palestinian statehood with unilateral measures, such as annexing parts of the West Bank. Netanyahu is expected to outline his plans during his upcoming visit to Washington, his fourth meeting with President Donald Trump since Trump’s return to office.

Israel maintains that its military campaign in Gaza is aimed at dismantling Hamas and ensuring national security. However, critics warn that the scale of destruction and civilian casualties risks fueling long-term instability and undermining prospects for peace.

Broader Diplomatic Context

The Gaza conflict has overshadowed nearly every other issue at the United Nations General Assembly this year. Leaders from Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America have used speeches and bilateral meetings to highlight the humanitarian crisis and call for accountability.

With mounting casualties, growing hunger, and displacement at unprecedented levels, momentum for international action appears to be building. Yet the persistent U.S. veto continues to stall concrete progress at the Security Council, raising doubts about the institution’s ability to deliver on its mandate of maintaining global peace and security.

Conclusion

The latest Security Council session highlighted the deepening rift between the United States and much of the international community over Gaza. While most nations demand an immediate ceasefire and steps toward Palestinian statehood, Washington’s refusal to shift its stance leaves the U.N. gridlocked.

As global frustration grows, the question remains whether international pressure can break the deadlock — or whether U.S. policy will continue to shield Israel from accountability despite near-universal calls for action.

Source: AP News –UN Security Council meeting on Gaza highlights growing isolation of US on Mideast conflict

Massive Sydney Harbour Protest Signals Rising Global Alarm Over Gaza Crisis

Published: August 9, 2025 – 14:00 (U.S. Eastern Time)

Tens of thousands march in Australia, reflecting growing international calls for peace and humanitarian action

Sydney, Australia – A landmark protest on the Sydney Harbour Bridge has drawn unprecedented numbers in support of Gaza, underscoring the growing global outcry over the humanitarian crisis in the region. The mass demonstration, held in heavy rain and strong winds, is being viewed by many as a pivotal moment in Australia’s political and social response to the conflict.

According to police estimates, at least 90,000 people participated, though organizers claimed the figure could be closer to 300,000. The event, planned in just one week, is part of a broader surge in international solidarity and calls for urgent action.

Growing Public Support for Gaza

Organized by the Palestinian Action Group, the Sydney march was the latest in a series of demonstrations that have taken place fortnightly since Israel’s 2023 invasion of Gaza. The group said the decision to stage the protest on the Harbour Bridge was intended to send a clear, highly visible message both to Australia and the world.

“We wanted something bold and symbolic,” said organizer Josh Lees. “Marching over Sydney Harbour Bridge captured the imagination of people horrified by what’s happening in Gaza.”

Recent events abroad have inspired Australian activists, including prominent pro-Palestinian statements at the Glastonbury Festival in the UK and the electoral victory of U.S. politician Zohran Mamdani, who received Jewish community backing despite his criticism of Israel. In Australia, support for Gaza has expanded beyond activist circles, drawing endorsements from church groups, trade unions, and members of parliament.

Government Response to the Crisis

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong acknowledged the scale of the demonstration, saying it reflected widespread public distress.

“I anticipated marches of this scale,” Wong told ABC Radio National. “Australians are horrified by the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza, the deaths of civilians, and the withholding of aid. They want peace and a ceasefire – and that’s what the government is seeking.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government faces mounting pressure to join other U.S. allies – including the United Kingdom, France, and Canada – in formally recognizing a Palestinian state. Discussions are ongoing ahead of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September, with Wong warning that “there is a risk there will be no Palestine left to recognize” without urgent action.

Calls for Stronger Measures

While recognition of Palestinian statehood was not a core demand of Sunday’s protest, activists are calling for stronger measures, including sanctions against Israel, an end to arms trade links, and the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid.

The Australian government maintains it has not supplied weapons or ammunition to Israel for at least five years. However, Australian companies produce components for F-35 fighter jets used by Israel, as part of a U.S.-coordinated supply chain.

Middle East expert Ian Parmeter from the Australian National University said Canberra could block the export of these components, but such action might have limited impact given global production capacity.

To date, Australia has sanctioned two far-right Israeli ministers over their role in inciting violence in the West Bank, in coordination with countries such as Canada, New Zealand, Norway, and the UK.

International Political Context

Former Human Rights Watch executive director Kenneth Roth said only U.S. political pressure could significantly influence Israeli policy. “The one person who has leverage over Netanyahu is U.S. President Donald Trump,” Roth told ABC, suggesting that conditioning arms sales could force an end to mass atrocities.

However, experts remain uncertain about whether Washington is willing to exert such influence.

Social Tensions in Australia

The Gaza conflict has had ripple effects within Australia’s multicultural communities. Reports of antisemitism and Islamophobia have surged since October 2023, prompting the government to appoint dedicated envoys to address hate incidents.

A recent proposal by antisemitism envoy Jillian Segal included education campaigns, law enforcement reforms, and penalties for institutions failing to act on reported hate speech. Critics, however, warn such measures could undermine free expression.

The scale of Sunday’s protest was seen by supporters as a victory for free speech. New South Wales Police unsuccessfully sought a court order to block the march, citing safety concerns. A judge ruled that prohibiting the demonstration would not make it safer, as large crowds were expected regardless.

Mixed Reactions and Media Coverage

The protest generated starkly different portrayals in the Australian media. The West Australian newspaper focused on isolated incidents such as burning flags and theatrical displays, while the Sydney Morning Herald highlighted the peaceful mass turnout with the headline, “Sydney says ‘enough’.”

Israeli officials criticized the march, with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar warning of what he described as dangerous alliances between radical political factions and extremist groups.

The Australian Iranian Community Alliance also questioned whether all participants were committed to peace, citing controversial imagery displayed at the event.

Humanitarian Aid and Next Steps

Following the march, the Australian government pledged an additional 20 million Australian dollars (USD $13 million) in humanitarian aid to Gaza, bringing its total commitment since October 2023 to 130 million Australian dollars (USD $84 million). However, it stopped short of meeting other protester demands.

Activists are now planning a nationwide day of action on August 24, aiming to sustain momentum and push for stronger policy changes.

“I think Sunday’s demonstration shows the tide is shifting,” said Lees. “People are seeing through the propaganda and standing up in unprecedented numbers to stop what they believe is a genocide.”

Israel Vows Retaliation as Iranian Strikes Injure Hundreds and Hit Major Hospital

Tensions between Israel and Iran have erupted into one of the most dangerous confrontations in years, with Iranian missile strikes injuring at least 240 people across Israel and prompting a fierce Israeli response that now includes direct threats to Iran’s Supreme Leader.

Iranian Missiles Hit Hospital and Tel Aviv Homes

On Thursday, Iran launched a wave of missile attacks across Israel. One of the most alarming strikes hit Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, Israel’s main hospital in the south. The surgical ward was heavily damaged, and hospital officials said it was only thanks to earlier evacuations that mass casualties were avoided. Dozens were still injured.

In Tel Aviv, residential buildings were struck, adding to the casualty toll and rattling civilian neighborhoods far from the front lines.

Israeli Defense Minister: “Khamenei Must Not Continue to Exist”

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz placed direct blame on Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling for his elimination: “In order to achieve all of our goals, this man absolutely should not continue to exist.”

Israeli forces responded with a major strike on Iran’s Arak heavy water nuclear reactor. The IAEA confirmed the facility was not active and posed no radiation threat. However, Israel released footage of the bombing, making clear it intends to severely degrade Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

Trump to Decide on U.S. Military Involvement

The White House announced that President Donald Trump will decide within two weeks whether to join Israel’s military campaign. While Trump says he still hopes for a diplomatic solution, press secretary Karoline Leavitt quoted him as saying, “There’s a substantial chance of negotiations, but I’ll make my decision within the next two weeks.”

Massive Human Toll in Gaza, Iran, and Israel

Gaza: In just the last 24 hours, 69 Palestinians were killed and 221 more injured amid continued Israeli airstrikes. Since October 2023, Gaza’s health ministry says over 55,000 have been killed and more than 130,000 injured.

Iran: Israeli strikes have killed at least 639 people across Iran, according to Human Rights Activists, a U.S.-based rights group. Iran’s last official update reported 224 deaths.

Israel: Beyond the 240 injuries from Iran’s latest barrage, multiple areas sustained damage, including hospitals, residential buildings, and key infrastructure.

Regional and Global Fallout

Air Travel Disrupted: U.S. airlines including United, American, and Delta have suspended flights to the Middle East. Ben Gurion Airport remains closed.

Evacuations Underway: Canada, Japan, China, and others are arranging for citizens to leave Israel and Iran. Cyprus has become a key transit hub.

Diplomatic Backlash: Iran summoned Germany’s envoy for supporting Israeli strikes. The country has also asked the U.N. Security Council to condemn Israel’s attacks.

Warnings from Russia, China, and Religious Leaders: Russia and China condemned Israel’s strikes and warned the U.S. not to escalate. Iraq’s Grand Ayatollah al-Sistani called a potential strike on Iran’s top leadership a “criminal act” that could unleash regional chaos.

Nuclear Tensions Rising

Israel claims to have destroyed two-thirds of Iran’s ballistic missile launchers and struck multiple nuclear-related sites. The Arak reactor strike aimed to halt any future plutonium production. Iran continues to enrich uranium at levels just short of weapons-grade.

Meanwhile, Iran’s blackout — the most severe since 2019 — has cut off internet access nationwide for over 24 hours.

International Diplomacy in Overdrive

Diplomatic talks are intensifying:

Iran’s foreign minister is meeting European officials in Geneva.

Egypt is pushing for a de-escalation dialogue.

Italy and the U.S. have reaffirmed that “Iran must not have the atomic bomb.”

The U.N. secretary-general is urging all sides to “return to diplomacy and stop the killing.”

Hezbollah and Militias Threaten U.S. Interests

Iraqi militia Harakat al-Nujaba warned it would target U.S. citizens if Khamenei is harmed. Hezbollah has praised Iran’s attacks but hasn’t confirmed whether it will join the fighting.

Final Word: A Region on the Edge

With missiles flying, leaders issuing ultimatums, and hospitals under fire, the Middle East is closer to the brink than it’s been in years. Whether Trump joins the war or finds a diplomatic offramp could determine whether this crisis becomes a full-blown regional conflict.

UN Poised to Vote on Gaza Ceasefire, Hostage Release, and Humanitarian Access

UNITED NATIONS – June 12, 2025 — The United Nations General Assembly is set to vote Thursday on a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages held by Hamas, and the full reopening of Israeli border crossings to allow urgently needed humanitarian aid.

Drafted by Spain and seen by the Associated Press, the resolution comes amid mounting global pressure to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where over 2 million Palestinians face famine. The text also condemns the use of starvation as a weapon of war, a charge many experts and human rights advocates say is increasingly relevant as Israel continues its military campaign.

A Resolution with Broad Support — But Limited Power

Unlike the Security Council, the General Assembly doesn’t operate with veto power, meaning the resolution is widely expected to pass — and likely by a large margin. But it’s important to note: General Assembly resolutions are non-binding. While they don’t carry legal force, they are seen as a strong indicator of global sentiment.

This vote comes just one week after the U.N. Security Council failed to pass a similar resolution. The U.S. vetoed that effort, arguing it lacked a provision tying the ceasefire to the release of Israeli hostages. The other 14 members voted in favor.

Ongoing Aid Crisis: Not Enough, Not Safe

Israel imposed a total blockade on Gaza for 10 weeks, but has recently allowed limited food shipments through U.N. channels and a new U.S.-backed aid effort called the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. This new initiative has opened several distribution sites in central and southern Gaza, but the situation remains dire.

Humanitarian operations continue to face serious obstacles, including near-daily shootings at aid distribution points, Israeli restrictions, and general lawlessness. The long-established U.N. aid system has also struggled to function under current conditions.

Legal Pressure Mounts

The draft resolution references a March 28 order by the International Court of Justice, which legally obligated Israel to open more land crossings into Gaza to allow for the delivery of food, water, fuel, and medical supplies. The order came in response to a case filed by South Africa, which accused Israel of committing genocide — a charge Israel strongly denies.

The resolution also reaffirms Israel’s responsibility as an occupying power under international law to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches civilians in need.

Calls for Peace and a Two-State Solution

The text renews the U.N. General Assembly’s support for a two-state solution, emphasizing that Gaza should be part of a future Palestinian state. A high-level meeting on this issue is scheduled for next week, although Israel has repeatedly rejected the two-state proposal in its current form.

Meanwhile, the resolution also expresses support for ongoing mediation efforts led by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States to revive a January ceasefire deal. The U.S. maintains that any ceasefire must reflect the “realities on the ground,” including guarantees for Israel’s security.

Controversy Over Hamas and the October 7 Attack

One notable omission in the resolution — like the failed Security Council version — is any explicit condemnation of Hamas’ deadly October 7, 2023 attack, which triggered the war. That assault killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and resulted in 251 hostages being taken, with around 55 still in captivity.

The U.S. has insisted that any path to peace must include disarmament and withdrawal of Hamas from Gaza — two points not mentioned in the current resolution.

Israel’s response has been devastating. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, over 55,000 Palestinians have been killed, the majority of them women and children. However, the Ministry does not separate civilians from militants in its count. Israel claims to have killed more than 20,000 militants, though it has not provided public evidence.

UK Suspends Free Trade Talks with Israel and Imposes Sanctions Over West Bank Settlers

LONDON — The British government took a firm stand against Israel’s military actions in Gaza on Tuesday by suspending free trade negotiations and imposing new sanctions targeting West Bank settlers.

This decision comes amid rising international pressure as Gaza faces a severe blockade lasting nearly three months, leading to alarming famine warnings. Even the United States, one of Israel’s closest allies, has expressed concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis.

Strong Words from UK Officials

Foreign Secretary David Lammy condemned the situation in Gaza as “abominable.” While the UK maintains an existing trade agreement with Israel, Lammy made clear that ongoing talks cannot continue with an Israeli government pursuing what he called “egregious policies” in the West Bank and Gaza.

“The world is watching,” Lammy said. “History will judge them. Blocking aid. Expanding the war. Ignoring the concerns of friends and partners. This is indefensible and must stop.”

His comments followed a joint statement issued Monday by the UK, France, and Canada condemning Israel’s handling of the Gaza war and its activities in the occupied West Bank.

Sanctions Target Settlers and Groups

In addition to earlier sanctions, the UK announced new penalties on three individuals, two illegal settler outposts, and two organizations accused of supporting violence against Palestinian communities.

Lammy criticized the Israeli government for explicitly supporting the expansion of illegal settlements across the West Bank, a key point of international contention.

Political Leaders Demand a Ceasefire

Prime Minister Keir Starmer also voiced deep concern over the humanitarian toll, calling the suffering of children in Gaza “utterly intolerable.” He echoed calls for a ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid.

Starmer, alongside French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, warned that further “concrete actions” would follow if Israel’s military offensive and aid restrictions continued.

Starmer emphasized that a ceasefire is vital to freeing hostages held by Hamas and that the current amount of aid allowed into Gaza is “utterly inadequate.”

“We must coordinate our response because this war has gone on far too long. We cannot allow the people of Gaza to starve,” he said.

Aid Slowly Making Its Way Into Gaza

After weeks of blockade, Israel allowed trucks carrying baby food and essential supplies into Gaza on Monday. However, U.N. humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher described this aid as only “a drop in the ocean” compared to what is urgently needed.

International Backdrop

Israel initially gained broad international support following Hamas’ surprise attack on October 7, 2023, which killed over 1,200 people and took 251 captives.

However, patience is wearing thin as more than 53,000 Palestinians — mostly women and children — have died, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. In recent days, Israeli strikes have claimed over 300 more lives.

France Steps Up Pressure

French President Emmanuel Macron has increased diplomatic efforts, pushing for a ceasefire and lifting Gaza’s blockade. Macron has also suggested that France may formally recognize a Palestinian state later this year and is considering reviewing the European Union’s cooperation agreements with Israel.

Tensions between France and Israel have intensified after Macron called for halting arms deliveries used in Gaza, sparking strong criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

France also sought to ban Israeli defense companies from exhibiting weapons at an upcoming naval trade show, signaling a tougher stance.

UK, France, and Canada Threaten Sanctions Over Israel’s Renewed Gaza Offensive

International outrage grows as humanitarian crisis worsens in Gaza

As Israel pushes forward with a new ground offensive in Gaza, the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, and Canada are warning of possible sanctions if the military campaign continues and humanitarian aid remains blocked.

In a joint statement Monday, the three countries demanded that Israel halt its latest military operation and allow full access for humanitarian relief. If not, they say “concrete actions,” including targeted sanctions, will follow.

Ground Offensive Escalates After Failed Ceasefire Talks

The Israeli military launched its renewed campaign, dubbed “Gideon’s Chariots,” just as former U.S. President Donald Trump left the region without securing a ceasefire or hostage release deal. Israeli troops have since advanced into both northern and southern parts of the Gaza Strip following days of heavy airstrikes.

On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israel intends to “take control of the entire Gaza Strip.” The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) say the goal is to defeat Hamas and free the remaining Israeli hostages.

But the toll has been staggering.

More than 400 Palestinians have been killed and over 1,000 injured since last Thursday, according to Gaza health officials.

Entire families have been wiped out in overnight strikes, including 49 people killed just between Monday and Tuesday.

The last hospital in northern Gaza has reportedly shut down amid the onslaught.

Since the war began in October 2023, over 53,000 people have died in Gaza, the majority of them women and children.

Gaza Becomes a War Zone

About 71% of Gaza’s territory is now designated a militarized zone or under evacuation orders, leaving much of the population without safe shelter. Nearly half a million people are now facing starvation, according to food security projections.

Israel’s partial lifting of its blockade on food aid has done little to ease concerns. On Monday, just five aid trucks were allowed through the Kerem Shalom crossing—a mere fraction of the 500 trucks needed daily, according to Gaza officials.

UN aid chief Tom Fletcher called the effort a “drop in the ocean,” warning that famine is imminent without immediate action.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot echoed that sentiment, calling Israel’s easing of aid access “totally insufficient.”

Allies Grow Impatient

Pressure is now coming from Israel’s closest allies.

Netanyahu admitted Monday that his government risks losing international support—even from long-time pro-Israel U.S. lawmakers—if images of starving children continue to circulate.

“We are giving you weapons and political backing,” Netanyahu quoted U.S. senators as saying, “but we cannot support mass starvation.”

The joint warning from the UK, France, and Canada was followed by another statement from 23 foreign ministers, including those from Germany, Italy, and the EU, urging Israel to immediately allow unrestricted humanitarian access.

They warned that food and medicine stocks are depleted and that Gaza’s population faces mass starvation.

Controversy Over New U.S.-Backed Aid Mechanism

Amid mounting criticism, a new organization—the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF)—is preparing to oversee aid deliveries. Backed by the U.S. and approved by Israel, the foundation aims to prevent aid from falling into Hamas’ hands.

But critics, including UN officials, say the plan would militarize humanitarian aid and potentially encourage forced displacement of civilians from northern Gaza.

UNICEF spokesperson James Elder condemned the plan as “unworkable,” saying Israel, as the occupying power, has a legal duty to ensure aid reaches civilians.

Tom Fletcher added bluntly: “We already have a plan. Let’s not waste time.”

Trump’s Role and Reactions

Former President Trump visited Gulf nations last week, including Qatar, where his team was involved in ceasefire negotiations. While he didn’t visit Israel, Trump insisted the trip was good for the region and claimed the U.S. would soon “take care of” the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

He also stirred controversy by suggesting the U.S. should “take” Gaza and turn it into a “freedom zone.”

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said the real problem with aid is logistical, citing dangerous conditions on the ground.

Where Do Ceasefire Talks Stand?

Negotiations have resumed in Doha, Qatar, but progress remains murky.

Hamas initially indicated it was willing to release a handful of hostages in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire and the release of Palestinian prisoners. However, within hours, another Hamas spokesperson denied that agreement, saying there would be no hostage release unless Israel commits to a full cessation of hostilities.

Israel has said it is open to ending the war—but only if Hamas surrenders, a demand that analysts say is unlikely to be accepted.

Final Thoughts

With the death toll rising, aid still limited, and diplomatic tensions running high, the situation in Gaza remains on a knife’s edge. Whether the international community’s pressure will alter Israel’s military course—or Hamas’ negotiating stance—remains uncertain.

A Week of Diplomacy Ends With Ukraine Back at Square One

Despite high-level talks, international phone calls, and bold statements, the push for peace in Ukraine remains stuck in neutral.

It’s been a whirlwind week of diplomacy. But while headlines were made, the reality for Ukraine hasn’t changed — and that’s telling. What didn’t happen might say more than what did.

Glimmers of Hope Fizzle Fast

The first direct talks between Ukraine and Russia in months were expected to revive hopes for ending Europe’s biggest war since World War II. Instead, the outcome was underwhelming: a basic prisoner swap, talk of more talks, and vague outlines for a possible ceasefire.

Prisoner exchanges are routine. Ukraine had already offered direct talks and demanded an immediate ceasefire on land, air, and sea — proposals that Russia initially dismissed, only to hint Friday they might reconsider.

Back Where It All Started

Diplomacy this week felt like running in place. It began last Saturday in Kyiv, where leaders from Ukraine, France, Germany, the UK, and Poland pushed for a one-month ceasefire. They even shared a photo of themselves on a call with President Trump, touting his support and warning of “massive sanctions” if Russia refused.

Fast forward six days, and the same five leaders were back on another group call — this time from Tirana — again speaking with Trump, again calling for peace. But Russia was still ignoring the truce, and frustrations were mounting.

Trump’s Dance With Putin

Former President Donald Trump has played both sides this week. He expressed interest in mediating a peace deal, even offering to meet Putin and Zelensky in Istanbul. But he also downplayed expectations, saying “nothing is gonna happen” until he sits down with Putin himself — a move that deflated the sense of urgency.

European leaders, especially France’s Macron and the UK’s Starmer, appeared frustrated. Publicly, they reaffirmed support for Ukraine and criticized Putin’s refusal to engage seriously. Privately, they likely reminded Trump of past promises — ones he’s been hesitant to deliver on, especially when it comes to pressuring the Kremlin.

Putin Stalls, Trump Hesitates

Two patterns are clear:

Putin continues to brush off Western pressure, offering just enough engagement to appear cooperative while making no real concessions.

Trump shows private sympathy for Ukraine, but his public actions — or lack thereof — suggest reluctance to hold Putin accountable.

At times, the White House has hinted it’s losing patience. Trump even floated secondary sanctions earlier this week. But those threats haven’t materialized into real pressure.

A Dangerous Illusion of Progress

Russia’s diplomatic approach seems designed to stall. Moscow offers vague proposals, continues military buildups (as drone footage reveals in the east), and even demands Ukrainian territory it hasn’t captured. The Kremlin is clearly playing for time, likely preparing for a summer offensive.

This week didn’t bring peace — but it did offer a rare moment of clarity.

A Voice of Dissent

Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink, who resigned last month, published a blunt critique of the Trump administration’s policy:

“Since the beginning, the focus has been on pressuring Ukraine, the victim, instead of confronting the aggressor, Russia… Peace at any price is not peace at all. It is appeasement — and that leads to more war, not less.”

What Comes Next?

Trump’s suggestion that no meaningful progress can be expected until he meets Putin in person leaves Ukraine in limbo. With no summit scheduled and no timeline given, the diplomatic push has effectively stalled.

And even if that meeting does happen, history suggests that it may reset the diplomatic clock — not advance it. Just like this week, Ukraine could find itself right back where it started: hoping for peace, but stuck at zero.

Source: CNN – A whiplash week of diplomacy leaves Ukraine much where it started

European Leaders in Kyiv Demand 30-Day Ceasefire from Russia or Face ‘Massive’ Sanctions

In a powerful show of unity and support for Ukraine, the leaders of Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Poland visited Kyiv this weekend and issued a clear message to Moscow: agree to a 30-day ceasefire starting Monday—or face sweeping new sanctions.

French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said the demand comes with full backing from the White House, following a joint call with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Ceasefire on All Fronts

The proposed ceasefire would cover land, sea, and air operations. If successful, Macron said, it could open the door for immediate peace negotiations aimed at ending the war.

“We demand it together from Russia,” Zelensky declared during the joint press conference. “The ceasefire must be full, unconditional, and begin Monday, May 12. Anything less is a clear sign of an intent to drag out the war.”

Kremlin Pushes Back

Despite the unified front from Kyiv and its allies, the Kremlin isn’t budging—at least not yet. In an interview with CNN, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia is “resistant to any kind of pressure,” and while President Putin supports a ceasefire “in general,” he raised vague concerns that “still need answering.”

One likely sticking point? Western military aid to Ukraine. Peskov hinted to ABC News that Russia wants an end to U.S. and European weapons deliveries—a demand Kyiv and its allies are unlikely to entertain.

Leaders Arrive in Kyiv by Train

Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk arrived early Saturday morning by train. They were welcomed at Kyiv’s central station by Zelensky’s chief of staff and later paid tribute to Ukraine’s fallen soldiers at Independence Square before heading to Mariinsky Palace for high-level talks.

Later, the four leaders huddled around a phone for a joint call with President Trump. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister shared a photo of the moment online, describing the conversation as “fruitful.”

The Clock Is Ticking

With less than 36 hours to go, if Russia agrees, satellite monitoring and communication systems will need to activate quickly to enforce the ceasefire across multiple fronts.

Russia, meanwhile, has continued with short-term, unilateral ceasefires—like the one it declared ahead of its annual May 9 Victory Day celebration. That pause is set to expire at midnight. Ukraine reported hundreds of Russian attacks during this period, though there were no major airstrikes or drone attacks on cities since Wednesday.

A Shift in U.S. Diplomacy

Since Trump’s return to the White House in January, Ukraine and its European allies have been closely watching for changes in U.S. policy toward Moscow. Trump recently warned that failure to respect the proposed ceasefire would result in further sanctions—signaling a tougher stance than some expected.

Still, Peskov downplayed the pressure, saying, “We are very grateful for U.S. mediation efforts, but it’s quite useless to try to press on us.”

Rising Security Concerns

Amid ceasefire talks, the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv issued a security alert Friday, warning of a potential major air attack in the coming days based on intelligence reports.

With diplomacy hanging in the balance, all eyes now turn to Moscow—and whether Putin will seize the chance for de-escalation or face deeper international isolation.

Israel Moves Forward With Gaza Offensive, Approves Controversial Aid Plan

Israel’s security cabinet has greenlit a major expansion of military operations in Gaza, alongside a new — and hotly debated — framework for humanitarian aid delivery, according to two Israeli officials.

Key Details:

Military Escalation: The plan, described by one official as a “conquest” of Gaza, includes seizing territory and maintaining a military presence.

Mass Mobilization: Tens of thousands of Israeli reservists are being called up to bolster operations in the embattled Palestinian territory.

Civilian Impact: The strategy includes relocating Gaza’s Palestinian population to the south while ramping up strikes against Hamas targets.

Rising Civilian Toll

Since mid-March, over 2,400 Palestinians have been killed in renewed Israeli strikes, ending a nearly two-month ceasefire. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than 52,000 Palestinians have died since the war began — a staggering human cost that continues to rise.

Possible Ceasefire Window

Officials noted that while the military campaign will intensify, its escalation may be gradual — in part to allow time for a potential ceasefire and hostage-release deal ahead of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s mid-May visit to the region. Trump is set to visit Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, though no stop in Israel is planned.

Aid Plan Sparks Cabinet Clash

Alongside the military vote, the cabinet approved a new framework for resuming humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza — though implementation is still pending.

The aid decision sparked fierce debate inside Sunday’s cabinet meeting. Far-right ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Orit Strook opposed any resumption of aid, while IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir argued that Israel is obligated under international law to allow humanitarian access.

Reports of the clash were confirmed by a government source, who said the media “is not wrong” about the extent of the disagreement.

International Concerns Over Starvation Tactics

Israel has enforced a near-total blockade on Gaza’s humanitarian supplies for nine weeks, aiming to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages. But human rights groups and UN officials warn that the blockade may constitute a war crime. Some accuse Israel of weaponizing starvation — a violation of international humanitarian law.

U.S.-Backed Aid Bypass Plan

In an effort to sidestep Hamas, U.S. and Israeli officials are crafting a new aid delivery system that would be managed by a private foundation. The proposed mechanism would involve international organizations and the United Nations, with strict safeguards to ensure aid doesn’t fall into the hands of Hamas or Islamic Jihad.

An announcement on the new system could come “in the coming days,” a State Department official told CNN.

Humanitarian Groups Reject the Plan

Aid agencies working in the occupied Palestinian territories have already rejected the proposed aid framework, saying it’s designed more to control access to basic supplies than to meet urgent humanitarian needs.

In a joint statement, the UN Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator emphasized they will not take part in any plan that violates humanitarian principles like impartiality, independence, and neutrality.

Gaza Aid Ship Catches Fire After Alleged Israeli Drone Attack Near Malta

An aid ship en route to Gaza reportedly caught fire early Friday following an alleged drone attack in international waters near Malta, according to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), the group organizing the mission. The group believes Israel was behind the strike, though no evidence has been publicly provided, and Israeli officials have declined to comment.

The vessel, named The Conscience, was carrying humanitarian supplies and activists when it caught fire shortly after midnight local time. The ship issued a distress signal, with the FFC reporting a hole in the hull and fears of it sinking. Malta’s government confirmed the fire and said it had been extinguished. No injuries were reported.

“There is a hole in the vessel right now and the ship is sinking,” FFC press officer Yasemin Acar told CNN.

A tugboat was dispatched to assist, but all crew members reportedly refused to board it, opting instead to continue fighting the fire on board.

Malta reported 16 people were aboard — 12 crew and 4 civilians — though FFC initially claimed 30 were on the ship. The vessel had not yet reached Malta, where more activists, including climate activist Greta Thunberg and retired U.S. Army Col. Mary Ann Wright, were scheduled to join before the voyage to Gaza.

FFC accused Israel of targeting the vessel, saying it was attacked twice by drones. Videos shared by the group show flames and smoke, along with the sound of explosions. CNN could not independently verify the footage.

Activist Mary Ann Wright expressed disbelief at the incident, telling CNN:
“Who would send drones to bomb a ship that is anchoring off Malta? Anyone could have been on that boat.”

FFC called for international accountability, urging governments to summon Israeli diplomats and investigate what it calls violations of international law.

Speaking to Reuters from Malta, Thunberg condemned the blockade on Gaza and emphasized the mission’s goal:
“For two months now, not a single bottle of water has entered Gaza. It’s a systematic starvation of 2 million people,” she said.

She added that the ship remains at anchor because moving it could cause it to take on water and sink.

The incident comes amid a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israel imposed a full blockade on the region in March, cutting off food, medicine, and other aid to over 2 million residents. The World Food Programme recently warned its warehouses are empty, and remaining food in local markets is unaffordable for most.

Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, urged authorities to protect the vessel and investigate the incident.

In 2010, a similar flotilla headed to Gaza was raided by Israeli forces in international waters, resulting in nine deaths and international condemnation. The FFC says it kept this latest mission under media blackout to avoid sabotage.

While the Israeli military remains silent, flight-tracking data showed an Israeli Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft flying near Malta hours before the alleged attack, though it never landed on the island. The plane later returned to Israel.

Former U.S. Army explosives expert Trevor Ball told CNN that photos of the damaged ship appear consistent with two small blast munitions.

Despite the incident, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition vows to continue its mission:
“What is certain is that we human rights activists will continue to do everything in our power to do our part,” said Thunberg.
