Japan’s Female Leader Faces Sumo Tradition Debate as Trophy Ceremony Nears

Japan’s first female prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, has unintentionally revived a long-running national debate: whether women should be allowed to enter the professional sumo ring. The discussion resurfaced after questions emerged about who will present the Prime Minister’s Cup at major tournaments — a role that traditionally places Japan’s leader inside the male-only dohyo.

Takaichi, who took office in October, will miss the trophy ceremony at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament because she returns from the Group of 20 summit in South Africa a day after it concludes. Her next opportunity will come at the New Year Grand Tournament in Tokyo. But even without her direct involvement, her historic election has intensified public scrutiny of a centuries-rooted custom that bars women from the ring.

The debate extends beyond sport. It has become part of a broader national conversation about gender equality, tradition, and Japan’s evolving social landscape.

The Tradition Behind a Modern Controversy

The prohibition on women entering the sumo ring — a raised platform made of clay with a sacred boundary of rice straw — is widely known in Japan. The dohyo is regarded as a place of purity within professional sumo tradition. Its ancient connection to Shinto ceremonies has often been cited as justification for the ban, though scholars argue the basis is more complex.

Women are still excluded from certain sacred sites and religious rituals across Japan, a legacy tied to older ideas of ritual impurity associated with menstruation and childbirth. According to Naoko Kobayashi, a religion and gender expert at Aichi Gakuin University, many modern restrictions stem from Meiji-era customs rather than ancient doctrine. These exclusions once extended to religious training grounds, particular temples and shrines, and local festivals. While many bans have faded, some still persist.

Critics argue these traditions no longer reflect Japan’s social or demographic realities, especially as women play increasingly visible roles in public life.

A 1,500-Year Sport With a Gender Rule That Isn’t Ancient

Sumo’s long history is deeply intertwined with Shinto ritual and Japanese court ceremonies. Its earliest matches, recorded more than 1,500 years ago, served as offerings to the kami, or spirits. Ritual dancing, prayers for harvests, and ceremonial performances shaped the sport’s early identity.

Yet historians point out that women were not always excluded. A seventh-century imperial chronicle describes female court performers engaging in sumo at the request of an emperor. Records from the 16th century reference female wrestlers, suggesting the modern ban is far from timeless.

The Japan Sumo Association, however, has traditionally defended the rule. Its chairman, Nobuyoshi Hakkaku, said in 2018 that the ban is not based on religious notions of impurity. He argued that the dohyo is a competitive battleground designed exclusively for male wrestlers, and that preserving its all-male status is part of the sport’s identity. “We have consistently denied sexist intentions,” he said at the time.

As the sport modernized — especially after Emperor Meiji attended matches in 1884 and the opening of Ryogoku Arena in 1909 — its traditions became formalized. Critics say the exclusion of women hardened during this transition.

Public Pushback and High-Profile Incidents

Challenges to the ban have surfaced for decades. In 1978, labor ministry official Mayumi Moriyama protested when a young girl was denied entry to a championship ring despite winning a local children’s qualifying match. Years later, as a government spokesperson, she was barred from entering the ring to present the Prime Minister’s Cup.

The issue gained international attention in 2018 when the mayor of Maizuru collapsed while speaking in the dohyo. Two female medical responders rushed in to give first aid, followed by two more women. Announcements repeatedly instructed them to leave the ring, prompting broad criticism. Officials then scattered salt across the ring — a purification gesture — further igniting public backlash.

Days afterward, Takarazuka city mayor Tomoko Nakagawa was prohibited from entering the ring to deliver a ceremonial address at a regional tournament. Forced to speak from the sidelines, she said she felt humiliated to be excluded solely because of her gender.

Following these events, the Sumo Association apologized and established a panel of outside experts to review the ban. Seven years later, the panel has yet to issue a formal decision, underscoring the sensitivity and complexity of the issue.

Kobayashi, the gender studies expert, says the ban is increasingly incompatible with contemporary norms. “Excluding women under the premise of male-centered traditions and customs can no longer be justified under the values of the times,” she said.

A Conservative Leader Navigating a Cultural Crossroads

Prime Minister Takaichi is a traditionalist on gender issues. She supports maintaining male-only succession in Japan’s imperial family and opposes allowing married couples to retain separate surnames — a reform backed by many women’s-rights groups.

Her political base includes right-wing voters who value cultural continuity and have rallied behind populist groups in recent years. Any appearance of challenging sumo tradition, analysts suggest, could risk alienating that bloc.

Her government spokesperson, Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara, has already signaled that she does not intend to step into the sumo ring. “Prime Minister Takaichi intends to respect the tradition of sumo culture,” he told reporters.

Her stance reflects the broader challenge facing Japanese leaders: balancing respect for heritage with calls for greater gender equality. The outcome of the debate may set a symbolic precedent for how Japan manages competing pressures of tradition and modernity.

What Comes Next

The next major test will come during the January tournament in Tokyo. Whether Takaichi will be able — or willing — to enter the ring remains uncertain. What is clear is that the conversation about women and sumo will continue. With Japan’s first female prime minister now at the center of national attention, many believe the country is entering a pivotal moment in its ongoing dialogue about gender roles.

For now, the ring remains closed, but the debate around it is more open than ever.

Israeli Strikes Across Gaza: At Least 58 Killed as Conflict Escalates

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli airstrikes overnight and into Thursday killed at least 58 Palestinians, including men, women, and children, as they slept in their homes, according to reports from three hospitals.

Renewed Fighting and Blockade Restoration

Late Thursday, the Israeli military reinstated a blockade on northern Gaza, including Gaza City, after temporarily easing restrictions in January. Authorities warned residents against using the territory’s main highway and stated that movement would only be permitted southward along the coastal road.

This escalation follows Israel’s resumption of heavy strikes on Tuesday, ending a ceasefire that had halted fighting and facilitated the release of over two dozen hostages. Israel attributed the renewed violence to Hamas, claiming the group rejected a newly proposed agreement.

Heavy Casualties as Strikes Target Homes

The Gaza Health Ministry reported over 400 Palestinian deaths on Tuesday alone, predominantly women and children. Meanwhile, there have been no reports of Hamas firing rockets or conducting attacks.

One of the deadliest airstrikes early Thursday hit the Abu Daqa family home in Abasan al-Kabira, near Khan Younis. The attack, occurring in an area the Israeli military had ordered evacuated, killed at least 16 people, including a father and his seven children. A month-old baby miraculously survived but lost both parents and a sibling.

“Another tough night,” said Hani Awad, a volunteer assisting in rescue efforts. “The house collapsed over the people’s heads.”

There has been no immediate comment from the Israeli military regarding these latest strikes. However, Israeli authorities maintain that their operations target militants, blaming Hamas for embedding within residential areas.

Israeli Ground Troops Push Forward

For the first time since January’s ceasefire, Israeli ground forces advanced into Gaza on Wednesday, seizing part of a key corridor that divides the northern third of the territory from the south.

Additionally, Israel has cut off food, fuel, and humanitarian aid to Gaza’s approximately 2 million residents, vowing to intensify operations until Hamas releases the remaining 59 hostages, 35 of whom are believed dead.

Hamas Demands and Ceasefire Breakdown

Hamas has stated that it will only release the remaining hostages in exchange for:

A lasting ceasefire

A full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza

The group, which does not recognize Israel’s existence, has expressed willingness to transfer governance to the Western-backed Palestinian Authority or an independent political committee but refuses to disarm until Israel ends its decades-long occupation.

‘A Bloody Night’ in Northern Gaza

The European Hospital in Rafah reported 36 bodies arriving after the strikes, mostly women and children. The Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis received seven bodies and transferred four more to the European Hospital. In northern Gaza, the Indonesian Hospital reported 19 deaths following airstrikes in Beit Lahiya.

“It was a bloody night for the people of Beit Lahiya,” said Fares Awad, head of the Gaza Health Ministry’s emergency services. “The situation is catastrophic, and rescuers are still searching for survivors in the rubble.”

Beit Lahiya was heavily destroyed and largely depopulated during the war’s early phase. On Wednesday, an Israeli airstrike killed 17 mourners gathered for a funeral, according to health officials.

No End in Sight to the 17-Month War

The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants stormed southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.

Since then, Israeli forces have launched one of the deadliest military offensives in modern history, resulting in nearly 49,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. More than half of those killed have been women and children. Israel claims to have eliminated 20,000 militants but has not provided evidence.

The war has displaced nearly 90% of Gaza’s population, reducing much of the territory to rubble. While some civilians returned home during the ceasefire, many found their neighborhoods completely destroyed, with only fields of debris and bombed-out structures remaining.

With no clear resolution in sight, the humanitarian crisis deepens, leaving millions in Gaza struggling to survive as the conflict rages on.

Source: AP News – Israeli strikes across Gaza hit multiple homes, killing at least 58 Palestinians, medics say

Woman Killed After Being Set on Fire on New York Subway Train

NEW YORK, Dec 22 A horrifying incident unfolded on Sunday morning in Brooklyn, New York, when a woman was set on fire aboard a subway train, resulting in her death. Police have since arrested a suspect connected to the attack.

The Incident

At approximately 7:30 a.m. (1230 GMT), the woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, was sitting motionless inside a stationary F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station. According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), an unknown man calmly approached her and used a lighter to ignite her clothing.

Investigators revealed there was no prior interaction between the victim and the suspect, and they do not believe the two were acquainted.

Police and Witness Accounts

The suspect exited the train moments after setting the woman on fire. Police officers on routine patrol at the station rushed to the scene upon noticing the flames.

“What they saw was a person standing inside the train car fully engulfed in flames,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch during a press conference.

Bystanders captured the harrowing scene on cellphone video, later shared on social media. The footage shows a man dressed in a gray hoodie, resembling the suspect, sitting on a platform bench a few steps away from the burning victim.

When asked if the man seen on the bench was the attacker, police stated that responding officers initially had no reason to suspect him, as their immediate focus was on aiding the woman.

Emergency Response

Officers used fire extinguishers to douse the flames. Tragically, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

Arrest of the Suspect

Later on Sunday, authorities arrested a man riding the subway who matched the suspect’s description. His identity has not yet been publicly released.

This chilling incident has sent shockwaves through the city, with many calling for heightened safety measures on public transit systems. Police continue their investigation as the city grapples with this tragedy.

Regional governor Reiner Haseloff revealed that the suspect is a Saudi Arabian doctor residing in Saxony-Anhalt, where Magdeburg serves as the state capital. Authorities believe the act was deliberate, though the suspect was not previously flagged as an extremist, according to security officials cited by dpa news agency.

Social Media Captures Chaos

Videos circulating on social media depict the harrowing aftermath, with multiple victims receiving emergency aid at the scene. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his condolences, posting on X (formerly Twitter):
“My thoughts are with the victims and their relatives. We stand beside them and the people of Magdeburg.”

Heightened Vigilance at Christmas Markets

This incident comes amid heightened concerns about security at Germany’s beloved Christmas markets. Less than a month ago, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser urged vigilance, citing an abstract yet significant threat.
“Federal security authorities do not currently have any concrete indications of danger,” she said, but emphasized increased security measures, including strict knife bans and monitoring for potential threats.

A Grim Reminder of the 2016 Berlin Attack

The tragedy in Magdeburg echoes the 2016 Berlin Christmas market attack, where a man pledging allegiance to ISIS drove a stolen truck into a festive crowd, killing 13 and injuring dozens. In response, major cities like Berlin have since bolstered market security with concrete barriers and stricter protocols.

However, concerns remain about whether smaller cities like Magdeburg have adopted similar measures.

Foiled Attack in Bavaria Highlights Ongoing Threats

Just two weeks ago, German authorities thwarted a potential attack on a Bavarian Christmas market. Acting on intelligence, police arrested a 37-year-old Iraqi suspect in Augsburg who had allegedly posted threats online and surveilled a local market.

A Nation in Shock Amid Political Uncertainty

The deadly incident in Magdeburg has sent shockwaves across Germany, underscoring the fragility of public safety during the festive season. As the nation grapples with this tragedy, it also faces political turbulence ahead of elections early next year.

About Magdeburg

Located southeast of Berlin, Magdeburg is the capital of Saxony-Anhalt and home to approximately 240,000 residents. This peaceful city now finds itself at the center of a national conversation about safety, security, and resilience in the face of tragedy.

Person of Interest in UnitedHealth CEO Shooting Identified as Luigi Mangione

Authorities in New York have identified Luigi Mangione, 26, as the individual arrested in Pennsylvania in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione was apprehended Monday morning at a McDonald’s in Altoona, approximately 275 miles from New York City, after a restaurant employee recognized him, according to police.

Key Details of the Arrest

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed in a press conference that Mangione was in possession of a firearm and a fake New Jersey ID at the time of his arrest. This ID matched the one used to check into a hostel days before the shooting. Currently, Mangione has not been charged with Thompson’s murder but is being held on local charges, possibly related to the false ID. Authorities are working to extradite him to New York, where he is expected to face charges connected to the shooting.

“Old-School Detective Work and New Technology” Led to Breakthrough

Commissioner Tisch credited the arrest to a combination of traditional police methods and advanced technology. She emphasized the crucial role of public vigilance, stating, “We should never underestimate the power of the public to be our eyes and ears.” Tisch also acknowledged the gravity of the tragedy, highlighting that a grieving family remains at the center of this case.

A Chilling Assassination in Midtown Manhattan

Brian Thompson, 50, was gunned down last Wednesday outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan, where he was attending an investor event for UnitedHealth. The attack occurred just before dawn in one of the city’s busiest business and shopping districts. The masked assailant initially evaded authorities by using an electric Citibike to escape into Central Park before boarding a bus out of the city. Surveillance footage from a hostel on the Upper West Side later showed Mangione pulling down his mask, reportedly flirting with a desk clerk.

Public Reactions Reflect Frustration with Healthcare System

The shocking murder has sparked widespread online debate, with reactions ranging from shock to expressions of frustration about the U.S. healthcare system. Some commentary underscored a deep dissatisfaction with healthcare executives, an issue reflected in a recent Gallup poll showing public confidence in healthcare at a 24-year low.

Potential Motive Emerges

Police revealed that bullet casings found at the scene were inscribed with the words “Deny, Defend, Depose”, a chilling message that may hint at the shooter’s motives. Authorities also discovered a manifesto on Mangione during his arrest, which contained sharp criticisms of the health insurance industry. Details of the document’s contents have not been disclosed.

Company Responds to Tragedy

In a statement to Newsweek, UnitedHealth Group expressed hope that Mangione’s arrest would bring some solace to Thompson’s family, colleagues, and friends. The company described the incident as an “unspeakable tragedy” and pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation.

The arrest marks a significant development in a case that has drawn national attention, not only for its audacity but for the broader conversations it has ignited about the state of healthcare in America. As the investigation continues, authorities remain focused on ensuring justice for Brian Thompson and his grieving loved ones.
