BANGKOK, Thailand — Myanmar’s military government says it has recaptured two strategically important border towns near India and Thailand from ethnic armed groups, marking a significant battlefield reversal in the country’s prolonged civil war and underscoring the junta’s efforts to regain territorial control after months of setbacks.

State-run newspaper Myanma Alinn reported that government troops retook Tonzang in northwestern Chin State after a 10-day military operation. The town lies close to the Indian border and had been controlled by Chin ethnic resistance forces since 2024.

A day earlier, the military announced it had also regained control of Mawtaung, a key trade town near the Thai border in the southern Tanintharyi region, following a two-week offensive against the Karen National Union (KNU) and allied resistance fighters.

Strategic Momentum Shifts

The twin offensives represent one of the junta’s most notable territorial gains since armed resistance groups dramatically expanded their control across multiple regions after the 2021 military coup that ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Analysts noted that the military has gradually regained momentum since mid-2025, aided by forced conscription measures, intensified air operations, and several China-backed ceasefire arrangements that eased pressure on other fronts.

The recapture of Tonzang is particularly significant because the town sits near supply routes linked to India’s Mizoram state, while Mawtaung serves as an important commercial gateway connecting Myanmar with Thailand. Control of border crossings has become central to both military logistics and revenue generation during the conflict.

Regional Security Concerns Grow

The developments come amid broader instability across Myanmar’s border regions, where ethnic militias and anti-junta resistance groups have seized major territory since late 2023 under coordinated offensives known as Operation 1027.

Chin State and Tanintharyi have experienced sustained fighting since the coup, displacing civilians and disrupting trade routes with neighboring countries. International aid organizations have repeatedly warned about worsening humanitarian conditions in conflict-affected areas.

Government reports stated that more than 200 armed engagements occurred during the Mawtaung operation and claimed that dozens of resistance fighters were killed. Independent verification remains difficult because of severe restrictions on media access and communications in many parts of Myanmar. Resistance groups had not publicly responded to the military’s claims at the time of reporting.

Peace Talks Remain Uncertain

The military gains also follow recent calls by junta leader Min Aung Hlaing for renewed peace negotiations with armed resistance organizations. However, analysts say mutual distrust and continued military offensives make any nationwide settlement unlikely in the near term.

Myanmar’s conflict has evolved into one of Southeast Asia’s most complex wars, involving the military, ethnic armed organizations, and pro-democracy resistance groups operating across multiple regions. The fighting has increasingly drawn concern from neighboring countries over refugee flows, border security, and regional stability.

A fragile Lebanon-Israel truce is holding for now, offering a tentative pause in cross-border hostilities and allowing thousands of displaced civilians to return to their homes, in a development with significant implications for regional stability. The ceasefire, brokered by the United States, has reduced immediate violence along the volatile frontier, though officials and analysts warn the situation remains highly precarious.

The agreement follows weeks of escalating exchanges between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters that raised fears of a broader regional conflict. While the lull in fighting has enabled humanitarian movement and partial restoration of daily life in affected areas, the durability of the truce remains in question amid unresolved political and military tensions.

Reporting from The Associated Press indicates that families who fled southern Lebanon during the height of the clashes have begun cautiously returning, navigating damaged infrastructure and uncertain security conditions. Local authorities have urged vigilance, noting that the ceasefire remains informal and dependent on continued restraint by both sides.

Diplomatic Pressure Builds Around Lebanon-Israel Truce

The Lebanon-Israel truce reflects intensified diplomatic efforts by Washington to prevent further escalation in a region already strained by multiple conflicts. US officials have engaged both Israeli authorities and Lebanese intermediaries in an attempt to sustain the ceasefire framework, emphasizing the risks of miscalculation along the border.

Analysts interviewed by international media outlets suggest the truce serves immediate strategic interests for both parties. Israel appears focused on avoiding a multi-front confrontation, while Hezbollah may be seeking to recalibrate after sustained exchanges. However, the absence of a formal agreement leaves the arrangement vulnerable to collapse.

Regional Stability Tested by Ongoing Uncertainty

Despite the relative calm, the broader security environment remains fragile. Sporadic incidents and mutual accusations continue to underscore the volatility of the situation, with military forces on both sides maintaining heightened alert levels.

Observers note that the ceasefire does not address underlying drivers of conflict, including territorial disputes and Hezbollah’s military presence near the Israeli border. Without structural de-escalation measures, the current pause risks becoming a temporary reprieve rather than a pathway to sustained peace.

Humanitarian Conditions Begin to Improve

The truce has enabled humanitarian access to previously contested areas, allowing aid organizations to assess damage and provide assistance to returning residents. Displaced families are beginning to rebuild, though many face destroyed homes, disrupted services, and limited resources.

Relief efforts are expected to intensify in the coming days, but humanitarian agencies warn that recovery will depend heavily on continued stability. The return of civilians also raises logistical challenges, including the need for infrastructure repair and security assurances.

Strategic Stakes Rise for International Actors

The ceasefire carries broader geopolitical significance as global powers monitor developments closely. The United States’ role in brokering the truce underscores its continued engagement in Middle Eastern security dynamics, while regional actors remain wary of spillover effects.

Diplomats caution that any breakdown in the ceasefire could rapidly escalate tensions, potentially drawing in additional parties and complicating already delicate regional balances. As such, sustaining the current calm is viewed as critical not only for Lebanon and Israel but for wider international stability.

The coming days will test whether the Lebanon-Israel truce can evolve into a more durable arrangement or whether it will unravel under the weight of unresolved tensions, with significant consequences for regional security.

A 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has formally taken effect, offering a narrow window for de-escalation after days of cross-border violence that raised concerns of a broader regional confrontation. While the pause in fighting signals a temporary reduction in immediate risk, the underlying tensions shaping the conflict remain unresolved, leaving analysts questioning whether the truce represents a turning point or merely a tactical pause.

According to initial reporting from Reuters, the ceasefire was brokered through indirect diplomatic channels, with regional and international actors pushing urgently to prevent further escalation along the volatile frontier. Officials on both sides have yet to signal any shift in long-term strategic posture, reinforcing the perception that the agreement is limited in scope.

The Associated Press reported that the agreement includes a halt to airstrikes and cross-border fire, though enforcement mechanisms remain unclear—an issue that has historically undermined similar arrangements in the region.

Regional Deterrence Faces Renewed Stress Test

The ceasefire places immediate pressure on both Israel and Lebanese actors to maintain restraint, but it also exposes the fragility of deterrence frameworks that have governed the border for years. The recent escalation demonstrated how quickly localized incidents can spiral into sustained exchanges, particularly in an environment where multiple armed actors operate with overlapping agendas.

From a strategic perspective, the truce does little to alter the military calculus. Israeli defense planners continue to view northern threats through the lens of preemptive security, while armed groups in لبنان are likely to interpret the ceasefire as an opportunity to regroup rather than disengage.

This dynamic suggests that deterrence remains unstable—held together less by mutual confidence and more by short-term risk management.

Diplomatic Channels Under Pressure to Deliver Beyond Pause

The agreement has shifted immediate attention toward diplomatic actors tasked with extending the ceasefire or transforming it into a more durable arrangement. However, the absence of a clear political framework raises doubts about whether negotiations can move beyond crisis containment.

In remarks carried by regional broadcasters, officials emphasized the need for sustained dialogue, but stopped short of outlining concrete next steps. This gap underscores a recurring challenge: ceasefires in the region often succeed in halting violence temporarily, yet fail to address the structural drivers of conflict.

Without parallel political engagement, the current truce risks becoming another short-lived interruption in a cycle of escalation.

Military Postures Remain Intact Despite Temporary Halt

Despite the cessation of hostilities, neither side has indicated a drawdown of forces or a recalibration of military readiness. Troop deployments, surveillance operations, and defensive systems are expected to remain at elevated levels throughout the ceasefire period.

This continuity reflects a broader pattern in regional conflicts, where pauses in fighting do not translate into reduced preparedness. Instead, they often serve as operational resets, allowing parties to reassess vulnerabilities and refine tactics.

As a result, the risk of rapid re-escalation persists, particularly if either side perceives a violation or strategic disadvantage.

Economic and Civilian Pressures Add to Fragility

Beyond military considerations, the ceasefire arrives amid mounting economic and humanitarian pressures on both sides of the border. Disruptions to daily life, infrastructure strain, and displacement concerns have intensified calls for stability, even as political solutions remain elusive.

These pressures may incentivize short-term compliance with the ceasefire, but they also highlight the cost of recurring instability—an issue that continues to shape public sentiment and policy decisions alike.

Uncertain Path Ahead as Clock on Truce Begins

The 10-day timeframe introduces a clear deadline that could either catalyze further diplomacy or trigger renewed confrontation. Much will depend on whether stakeholders can leverage the pause to establish mechanisms for longer-term stability.

For now, the ceasefire stands less as a resolution than as a test—of restraint, of diplomacy, and of a regional order increasingly defined by its volatility.

Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan escalated sharply after authorities in Kabul accused Islamabad of carrying out a devastating airstrike in the Afghan capital that officials say killed hundreds of civilians, dramatically raising the stakes in a fast-expanding cross-border conflict.

Afghan officials said the strike late Monday hit a large medical facility in Kabul used to treat people suffering from drug addiction. Government spokesmen claimed the attack destroyed significant portions of the complex and left at least 400 people dead with roughly 250 others injured. Pakistan rejected the accusation, insisting its air operations targeted militant infrastructure rather than civilian sites.

The dispute — reported by The Associated Press and other international media — underscores the rapid deterioration of relations between the two neighboring states, whose forces have exchanged fire repeatedly along their shared frontier over the past several weeks.

Civilian Casualty Claims Intensify Strategic Tensions

Afghanistan’s deputy government spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat said the strike occurred around 9 p.m. local time and caused severe damage to the hospital, a facility described by officials as capable of housing around 2,000 patients.

Images circulated by local television channels showed emergency workers moving through burning debris while rescuers attempted to retrieve victims under dim light and ongoing fires. Afghan officials said teams were still working through the rubble hours later to extinguish flames and recover bodies.

The Taliban government’s chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid condemned the attack in public statements, accusing Pakistan of deliberately striking a civilian medical facility and describing the incident as a violation of international humanitarian norms.

Islamabad Rejects Allegations, Points to Militant Targets

Officials in Islamabad swiftly denied the accusation. Pakistan’s government said its military operations were aimed at militant support infrastructure and weapons storage facilities connected to armed groups operating from Afghan territory.

According to Pakistan’s information ministry, the strikes targeted locations in Kabul and eastern Afghan provinces believed to be used by insurgents responsible for attacks inside Pakistan. Authorities insisted the operations were conducted with precision and avoided civilian locations.

A spokesman for Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif dismissed Kabul’s allegations as unfounded, arguing that Afghan leaders were attempting to deflect attention from what Islamabad describes as cross-border militant activity.

Border Clashes Push Rivalry Toward Open Conflict

The competing narratives emerge as military exchanges between the two countries intensify along their contested frontier.

Earlier Monday, Afghan officials said fighting along the border left at least four people dead inside Afghanistan. The clashes form part of a broader confrontation that has unfolded over several weeks, marking the most severe violence between the neighbors in years.

Pakistan has accused Afghanistan’s Taliban administration of allowing militants linked to the Pakistani Taliban to operate from Afghan soil. Kabul has repeatedly denied those claims.

Pakistani authorities say militant groups based across the border have carried out attacks targeting civilians and security forces inside Pakistan. Afghan officials counter that recent Pakistani airstrikes have killed civilians and violated Afghan sovereignty.

International Community Warns of Expanding Security Threat

The crisis unfolded only hours after the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution urging Afghanistan’s rulers to intensify efforts against terrorist groups operating within the country.

The measure also extended the mandate of the U.N. political mission in Afghanistan, United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), for an additional three months.

Diplomats warn that escalating hostilities between Kabul and Islamabad risk destabilizing a region where militant networks — including groups linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State — have historically maintained a presence.

Military Claims and Counterclaims Deepen Confrontation

The war of narratives between the two governments has expanded alongside the battlefield confrontation.

Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar recently said Pakistan’s military had killed hundreds of Afghan Taliban fighters in recent operations, a claim Kabul strongly disputes.

Afghan officials say their forces have inflicted significant casualties on Pakistani troops during border clashes, though those figures remain difficult to independently verify.

Meanwhile, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari accused Afghanistan’s Taliban administration of crossing a “red line” after drones allegedly launched from Afghan territory injured civilians in Pakistan.

Regional Stability Faces Growing Pressure

The current confrontation traces back to late February, when cross-border strikes and retaliatory attacks shattered a ceasefire that had been brokered months earlier through mediation by Qatar.

Since then, both sides have expanded their operations, including airstrikes and artillery exchanges that have drawn concern from international observers.

With neither government signaling a willingness to de-escalate and accusations continuing to mount, the confrontation between Afghanistan and Pakistan increasingly threatens to evolve from localized border clashes into a broader regional security crisis.

A new round of cross-border airstrikes has intensified the fragile security environment between Afghanistan and Pakistan, raising concerns among regional observers that the confrontation between the neighboring states may be entering a more dangerous phase.

Officials in Kabul said overnight strikes attributed to Pakistani aircraft hit residential areas and infrastructure in the Afghan capital and the southern province of Kandahar, killing at least four civilians and injuring several others. The incident comes as hostilities between the two countries stretch into their third week, marking one of the most severe periods of tension along their shared frontier in recent years.

According to a report by Associated Press, Afghan authorities accused Pakistani forces of striking civilian sites, including homes and fuel facilities near Kandahar airport.

Pakistan’s military and government had not issued an immediate response to the allegations at the time the claims were made.

Civilian Casualties Push Confrontation Toward Wider Conflict

Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the overnight strikes targeted multiple locations, including areas connected to civilian aviation infrastructure. He stated on social media that fuel depots used by the private Afghan carrier Kam Air were among the sites hit.

The facilities reportedly supply fuel for both commercial flights and aircraft used by the United Nations.

Local officials in Kabul reported that several homes were damaged during the strikes. City police spokesman Khalid Zadran said at least four civilians, including children, were killed in the capital, while more than a dozen people were injured.

Authorities said the overall casualty count across other provinces remained unclear as damage assessments continued.

Cross-Border Military Campaigns Intensify

The latest airstrikes are part of an expanding exchange of military operations that began in late February, when Afghan authorities said they struck Pakistani positions along the border following earlier Pakistani attacks.

Since then, both countries have reported targeting each other’s military installations.

Pakistani officials have repeatedly stated that their operations are aimed at militant groups operating near the frontier, particularly the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, commonly known as the Pakistani Taliban.

Islamabad accuses the Afghan Taliban government of allowing the group to operate from Afghan territory, a charge Kabul has consistently denied.

Pakistani authorities frequently refer to the group as “Khawarij,” a term used by Islamabad for the outlawed militants.

Security analysts say the cycle of retaliatory strikes has raised the risk that limited operations could evolve into a broader confrontation between the two states.

Diplomatic Channels Struggle to Contain Escalation

The military exchange is unfolding as regional diplomats attempt to prevent further deterioration.

China’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Yue Xiaoyong, arrived in Islamabad shortly before the latest strikes and met with Pakistan’s envoy for Afghan affairs, Mohammad Sadiq.

The talks followed earlier meetings in Kabul with Afghan officials.

According to statements shared by Sadiq, discussions focused on security concerns involving militant organizations, including the Pakistani Taliban and the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, which China considers a threat to its regional interests.

The envoys emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to stabilize the region.

Despite repeated calls from international actors urging restraint, the exchange of military operations has continued.

Ceasefire Collapse Undermines Fragile Stability

The latest clashes also underscore the breakdown of a ceasefire negotiated in late 2025 with mediation from Qatar and Turkey.

The truce was initially agreed in Doha and followed by several days of talks in Istanbul, where both sides pledged to pursue further negotiations aimed at stabilizing the border.

Those diplomatic efforts ultimately stalled, and hostilities resumed.

Security observers say the renewed violence highlights the fragility of existing mechanisms designed to manage tensions between Kabul and Islamabad.

Regional Security Calculus Faces New Uncertainty

The current confrontation reflects deeper structural tensions that have persisted since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.

Since then, attacks inside Pakistan attributed to the Pakistani Taliban have increased, prompting Islamabad to intensify cross-border counter-militant operations.

Afghan officials maintain that their government does not shelter the group and argue that Pakistan’s strikes violate Afghan sovereignty.

With both governments claiming significant battlefield losses inflicted on the other, the dispute is increasingly being framed by officials in Islamabad as an “open war” scenario.

Diplomatic observers warn that without renewed mediation or credible security arrangements along the border, the confrontation risks evolving from sporadic military exchanges into a more sustained regional security crisis.

ISLAMABAD (JN) – Clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan intensified over the weekend, with both nations claiming heavy casualties in air and artillery strikes targeting military positions along their shared border. The violence has prompted civilian displacement near key crossings and drawn international concern over renewed instability in the region. Diplomatic efforts are underway to prevent further escalation, with Qatar, Turkey, and other countries offering mediation.

Pakistan’s military reported that its recent operations against Afghan military positions killed over 300 Afghan forces and wounded more than 500, following several days of cross-border clashes. Pakistani officials said the strikes targeted 102 Afghan posts, destroyed 163 tanks and armored vehicles, and captured 22 positions. The operations were reportedly aimed at locations associated with the Pakistani Taliban, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an outlawed group allied with Afghanistan’s Taliban but operating independently.

State-run Pakistani media reported that airstrikes continued into Saturday, hitting key military installations across eastern Afghanistan. Hundreds of residents near the northwestern Torkham border crossing fled to safer areas amid the attacks, while Pakistani authorities transported dozens of Afghan refugees to secure locations.

Afghanistan’s government has not independently confirmed Pakistan’s casualty claims. However, the Afghan Defense Ministry said its forces carried out strikes overnight on Pakistani bases in Miranshah and Spin Wam, destroying military installations and inflicting significant losses. In eastern Afghanistan, local officials accused Pakistan of targeting civilian areas, claiming at least 11 deaths and the destruction of homes. Pakistan has maintained that its operations are aimed exclusively at military targets.

Mullah Taj Mohammad Naqshbandi, an Afghan commissioner at the Torkham border, stated that Afghan forces “destroyed the Pakistani military regime’s commissariat, military units, and three important security towers.” Afghan officials on Friday reported 55 Pakistani soldiers killed in their strikes and claimed Afghan casualties were lower than reported by Pakistan.

Afghan government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid framed the attacks as a warning to Pakistan, asserting that Afghan forces would respond to “every evil act” while criticizing Islamabad for avoiding dialogue. Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif declared on social media that “our patience has now run out. Now it is open war between us.” The Pakistani military has accused Kabul of harboring TTP militants, allegations denied by Afghanistan’s Taliban government and the TTP itself.

On the ground, civilians are bearing the brunt of the conflict. Afghan refugee Ejaz Ul Haq said he and his family could not return home due to ongoing fighting, and many others struggled to secure food during Ramadan. Pakistani villagers near the border have called for a ceasefire to reduce civilian suffering.

Tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border have been persistent since October, when border clashes killed dozens of soldiers, civilians, and suspected militants. A Qatari-mediated ceasefire temporarily halted fighting, but subsequent peace talks in Turkey failed to produce a lasting resolution. Sporadic exchanges of fire resumed last week after Pakistan struck TTP hideouts.

International actors are again attempting to mediate the crisis. Qatar’s Minister of State Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi spoke with the foreign ministers of both countries on Friday to encourage de-escalation, according to Qatar’s Foreign Ministry. Turkey, Saudi Arabia, China, and other nations have also offered to support diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation along the volatile border.

ISLAMABAD (JN) – Pakistan and Afghanistan exchanged air and ground strikes overnight, sharply escalating tensions along their shared frontier and prompting Pakistan’s defense minister to declare the situation an “open war.” The latest violence follows months of deteriorating relations between Islamabad and Kabul, marked by border clashes, competing casualty claims and failed mediation efforts.

The renewed fighting underscores the fragility of regional diplomacy in South and Central Asia, where militant activity, refugee movements and rival geopolitical alignments intersect. While both governments insist they are acting in self-defense, the scale and intensity of the latest operations have heightened concerns of broader instability.

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif said on social media that Islamabad’s “patience has now run out,” framing the confrontation as a direct response to Afghan military action. Afghan officials, for their part, described their initial strikes as retaliation for earlier Pakistani air operations in border areas that they say killed civilians.

Cross-border strikes and conflicting casualty claims

Afghanistan said it launched attacks on Pakistani military targets late Thursday in response to Pakistani airstrikes days earlier in Afghan border provinces. Pakistan then carried out further airstrikes early Friday, including in Kabul and other provinces, saying it targeted military installations.

Zabiullah Mujahid, spokesman for Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government, said the Afghan action was intended as a warning to Pakistan, accusing Islamabad of refusing dialogue. He rejected Pakistani casualty figures as inflated.

Pakistan’s military spokesperson, Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, said air and ground operations had killed at least 274 Afghan forces and affiliated militants and wounded more than 400. He reported 12 Pakistani soldiers killed and 27 wounded, with one missing. Afghan officials disputed those numbers, saying far fewer Afghan personnel were killed and alleging higher Pakistani losses, including captured soldiers.

Later Friday, Afghan authorities said 19 civilians were killed and 26 injured in Pakistani strikes on Khost and Paktika provinces, accusing Islamabad of deliberately targeting residential areas. Pakistan has not confirmed those civilian casualty figures. The competing claims could not be independently verified.

Pakistan’s air force also struck targets in Laghman province, according to two senior Pakistani security officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. They said an arms depot and two military installations were destroyed.

Separately, Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said anti-drone systems intercepted several small drones over the northwestern cities of Abbottabad, Swabi and Nowshera. He described the incident as a failed attack by the Pakistani Taliban and alleged links between militants and the Afghan Taliban government. Kabul has repeatedly denied providing sanctuary to anti-Pakistan groups.

Deepening mistrust and militant accusations

Tensions between the neighbors have been high for months. Border clashes in October left dozens of soldiers and civilians dead, prompting Qatar-mediated talks that produced a temporary ceasefire. Subsequent negotiations in Turkey failed to secure a lasting agreement.

Islamabad accuses Afghanistan’s Taliban government of harboring militant groups, including the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has intensified attacks inside Pakistan. The TTP, though separate from Afghanistan’s Taliban, is considered closely aligned. Both Kabul and the TTP deny operating from Afghan territory with official backing.

Asif also accused Afghanistan of aligning more closely with India, Pakistan’s longtime regional rival. Relations between Pakistan and India have been strained since independence in 1947, and Islamabad has previously accused New Delhi of supporting insurgent groups in Pakistan — claims India denies.

Afghan officials say Pakistan’s internal security challenges are longstanding and should not be attributed to Kabul. Mujahid described Pakistan’s conflict with the TTP as a domestic issue that predates the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, following the withdrawal of NATO forces.

International mediation efforts intensify

Diplomatic channels have been activated as fighting intensifies. Qatar’s Minister of State Mohammed bin Abdulaziz al-Khulaifi held separate calls with the foreign ministers of both countries in an effort to de-escalate tensions, according to Qatar’s Foreign Ministry.

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also spoke separately with counterparts in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. In October, Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia helped facilitate talks between the two sides.

In a statement, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres urged both governments to exercise maximum restraint and resolve differences through diplomacy while protecting civilians. Russia called for an immediate halt to hostilities, with Russian envoy Zamir Kabulov saying Moscow would consider mediating if requested. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi similarly encouraged dialogue during the holy month of Ramadan and offered Tehran’s assistance.

Despite the strong rhetoric, Afghan officials said they remain open to negotiations. Mujahid reiterated Kabul’s preference for a peaceful solution, though he insisted Afghanistan would respond to further attacks.

Refugees and regional fallout

The renewed fighting comes against the backdrop of large-scale population movements. Pakistani authorities said dozens of Afghan refugees near the Torkham border crossing had been relocated to safer areas.

Since October 2023, Pakistan has implemented a crackdown on undocumented migrants, leading to the return of millions of Afghans. Many had lived in Pakistan for decades, building businesses and families. According to the U.N. refugee agency, 2.9 million people returned to Afghanistan in 2025, including nearly 80,000 so far this year.

The security crisis adds to Afghanistan’s economic and humanitarian challenges, as well as Pakistan’s own domestic pressures from militant violence and political strain.

A volatile moment

The declaration of “open war” marks one of the most serious breakdowns in relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan in recent years. While past clashes have flared and subsided, the scale of the latest strikes and the sharp language from senior officials suggest a dangerous moment.

International actors appear keen to prevent further escalation. Whether mediation efforts can restore calm may depend on both sides’ willingness to separate immediate security grievances from broader political mistrust that has defined their relationship for decades.

KABUL, Afghanistan (Journos News) – The fragile ceasefire between Afghanistan and Pakistan appeared increasingly strained Friday after Pakistan launched airstrikes in Kabul and two other Afghan provinces, hours after Afghan forces carried out cross-border attacks into Pakistani territory.

The renewed fighting marks one of the most serious escalations in months between the neighboring countries, whose 2,611-kilometer frontier — known as the Durand Line — remains a source of longstanding dispute. Both governments accuse the other of provocation, while casualty figures differ sharply, underscoring the difficulty of independently verifying events on the ground.

Afghanistan’s government said explosions were heard in the capital early Friday, along with reported strikes in Kandahar and Paktia provinces. Pakistani officials confirmed military action but described it as a response to what they called unprovoked Afghan attacks late Thursday.

Airstrikes reported in Kabul, Kandahar and Paktia

Afghan government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said at least three explosions were heard in Kabul. There was no immediate confirmation of the exact locations or casualties in the capital.

Two senior Pakistani security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media, told The Associated Press that Pakistan’s military targeted Afghan military facilities in Kabul, Kandahar and Paktia. They alleged that two brigade bases were destroyed but did not provide casualty figures.

The escalation followed Afghan cross-border operations late Thursday that Kabul described as retaliation for Pakistani airstrikes earlier in the week. Afghan authorities claimed their forces had captured more than a dozen Pakistani army posts along the border.

Islamabad rejected those claims. Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the Afghan attack was unprovoked and denied that any army positions had been seized.

The conflicting accounts reflect the deep mistrust that has characterized relations between the two sides, particularly over security issues linked to militant groups operating near the frontier.

Afghan strikes described as retaliation

In a statement posted on X, Mujahid said Afghan forces had launched “large-scale offensive operations” against Pakistani military bases and installations along the Durand Line. Afghanistan has never formally recognized the border drawn during British colonial rule.

Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry said operations occurred across six border provinces and lasted roughly four hours before ending around midnight. It claimed 55 Pakistani soldiers were killed and several others captured, while eight Afghan personnel were killed and 11 wounded.

Pakistan presented far lower figures. Tarar said two Pakistani soldiers were killed and three wounded, and that 36 Afghan fighters had died. Mosharraf Ali Zaidi, spokesperson for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, later posted that at least 133 Afghan fighters were killed and more than 200 wounded, and denied any Pakistani soldiers had been captured.

Such wide discrepancies are common in cross-border clashes where independent access is limited. No third-party verification of the casualty claims was immediately available.

Refugee camp and border communities affected

Both sides reported exchanges of fire near the Torkham border crossing, one of the busiest transit points between the two countries.

Afghan officials said a missile strike wounded 13 civilians at a refugee camp near Torkham, including women and children. Authorities began evacuating the camp after several refugees were injured, according to local officials.

On the Pakistani side, police said residents in nearby villages were relocating to safer areas. Some Afghan refugees waiting to cross back into Afghanistan were also moved. Pakistan has been carrying out a large-scale migrant crackdown since October 2023, expelling hundreds of thousands of Afghans.

Pakistani police said mortars fired from Afghanistan landed in nearby villages but reported no civilian casualties.

The United Nations called for restraint. A spokesperson for U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said he urged both sides to protect civilians under international law and to resolve differences through diplomacy.

Months of mounting tension

The latest violence follows months of heightened friction along the border. Deadly clashes in October killed dozens of soldiers, civilians and suspected militants. Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of failing to curb militant activity, particularly by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which Islamabad says operates from Afghan territory.

The TTP is distinct from Afghanistan’s Taliban government but is widely seen as closely aligned with it. Kabul has denied that the group uses Afghan soil to stage attacks in Pakistan.

Earlier this week, Pakistan conducted strikes along the border, saying it killed at least 70 militants. Afghan authorities rejected that claim, saying the attacks hit civilian areas, including homes and a religious school, and killed dozens of civilians. Kabul described those strikes as violations of its sovereignty.

A ceasefire brokered by Qatar had largely reduced hostilities in recent months, though sporadic exchanges of fire continued. Several rounds of talks in November failed to produce a formal peace agreement.

The renewed strikes in Kabul and along the border suggest that the ceasefire framework is under significant strain. For residents on both sides of the Durand Line, the immediate concern remains safety, as communities brace for the possibility of further escalation.

With sharply differing casualty claims and rising rhetoric from both capitals, diplomatic efforts may face renewed urgency in the days ahead.

BANGKOK — Thailand and Cambodia have signed a new ceasefire agreement to end intensified border fighting, marking a renewed attempt to stabilize one of Southeast Asia’s most sensitive territorial disputes. The Thailand Cambodia ceasefire, confirmed by reporting from The Associated Press, took effect immediately and seeks to halt military escalation following weeks of deadly confrontations.

The agreement, signed by defense officials from both countries at a border checkpoint, includes provisions to stop troop movements and prevent military use of airspace along contested areas. The deal is seen as a critical step toward restoring stability in a region that has experienced repeated flare-ups tied to longstanding territorial claims.

Analysts say the renewed ceasefire carries broader regional implications, particularly for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which has sought to prevent localized conflicts from undermining wider regional security frameworks.

Regional Stability Tested by Renewed Thailand Cambodia Ceasefire

The Thailand Cambodia ceasefire follows weeks of heavy fighting that included artillery exchanges and airstrikes, with Thailand reported to have conducted aerial attacks on Cambodian positions during the escalation.

According to The Associated Press, the agreement prohibits further military deployments and aims to reduce the risk of miscalculation along the disputed frontier. The conflict had intensified earlier in December, despite previous ceasefire arrangements that failed to hold, underscoring the fragility of earlier diplomatic efforts.

Security analysts note that the absence of a robust monitoring mechanism has historically complicated enforcement, raising questions about whether the latest agreement can achieve sustained calm.

Humanitarian and Security Pressures Mount

The fighting has had significant humanitarian consequences, with casualties reported on both sides and large-scale civilian displacement. Hundreds of thousands of residents have been forced to flee border areas, highlighting the urgency of securing a durable ceasefire.

The agreement includes confidence-building measures such as the planned repatriation of Cambodian soldiers held by Thailand after a 72-hour compliance period, reflecting efforts to rebuild trust between the two governments.

Officials say these steps are intended to create conditions for displaced populations to return and for basic services in affected regions to resume.

International Mediation Efforts Gain Momentum

The ceasefire has drawn support from international stakeholders, including regional actors and major powers that have encouraged restraint and dialogue. Previous mediation efforts involving Malaysia and broader diplomatic pressure from global partners have played a role in bringing both sides back to negotiations.

Diplomatic observers suggest that sustained engagement from ASEAN and external partners will be essential to ensure compliance and prevent renewed hostilities. The involvement of multiple actors reflects the strategic importance of maintaining stability in mainland Southeast Asia.

Strategic Stakes for Southeast Asia

The Thailand Cambodia ceasefire highlights the continued sensitivity of border disputes rooted in historical territorial claims. While the latest agreement may reduce immediate tensions, underlying disagreements over demarcation remain unresolved.

Experts say the long-term success of the ceasefire will depend on whether both sides can translate temporary de-escalation into structured negotiations addressing core territorial issues. Without such progress, the risk of renewed conflict is likely to persist.

For regional stakeholders, the agreement serves as a test of ASEAN’s capacity to manage intra-regional disputes and maintain security cohesion. The coming weeks—particularly the initial compliance period—are expected to be critical in determining whether the ceasefire can evolve into a more durable peace framework.
