“I’m Not the Guy”: Pascal Siakam’s Humble MVP Moment Fuels Pacers’ Finals Run

The Indiana Pacers are headed to the NBA Finals for the first time in decades, riding high after knocking out the New York Knicks in a thrilling six-game Eastern Conference Finals. And while the team effort has been undeniable, one player stood out — Pascal Siakam.

Siakam, who joined the Pacers mid-season, was named Eastern Conference Finals MVP after a standout performance. Over six games, he averaged 24.8 points on an efficient 52.4% shooting, playing a key role in dismantling New York’s defense.

But in a moment that revealed both humility and heart, Siakam downplayed his own spotlight during his MVP acceptance speech.

“I know I’m not the guy everyone’s going to talk about, and I really don’t care,” Siakam said. “I’m just a kid from Cameroon who came to the U.S. at 18 and gave everything to this game. I just work every day. I don’t cheat the work.”

It was an emotional and refreshingly candid moment from the three-time All-Star — one that clearly resonated with fans and teammates alike.

Since arriving in Indiana, Siakam has brought more than just points and rebounds. He’s brought leadership, a winning mentality, and a calm presence to a team that’s grown closer with each game.

“It’s been such an amazing experience for me so far,” Siakam shared. “From the first day I landed here, the love has been amazing.”

Now, with the Pacers preparing to face the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals, Siakam’s impact will be needed more than ever. Game 1 tips off Thursday, June 5, at 8:30 p.m. ET.

This Finals appearance marks a major turnaround for Indiana — a team that’s come together at just the right time. And whether or not Siakam considers himself “the guy,” he’s exactly the kind of player every championship team needs.

How a Small Italian Court Shaped Kobe Bryant into an NBA Legend

In the quiet, picturesque city of Reggio Emilia, Italy, there’s a small, unassuming playground with basketball hoops fastened to opposite walls. The court’s worn surface, surrounded by bicycles and overlooked by the spire of a local church, might seem an unlikely backdrop for greatness. Yet, this tiny court played a pivotal role in shaping one of basketball’s all-time greats: Kobe Bryant.

A New Beginning in Italy

In 1983, Kobe Bryant’s father, Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, left the NBA for a basketball career in Europe, uprooting his family to Italy. Just six years old, Kobe was immersed in a completely new culture, language, and way of life. Despite these challenges, he quickly adapted and embraced his new environment.

Reggio Emilia, the family’s final stop in Italy, became a special place for young Kobe. Here, he developed his love for basketball and made lifelong friends, including Marco Ferraroni, a teammate on the local youth basketball team.

Endless Afternoons on the Court

Ferraroni, who appears in CNN’s documentary “Kobe: The Making of a Legend,” fondly remembers spending hours playing with Kobe on the court near the local church. Whether it was one-on-one games or three-point competitions, Kobe’s dedication was unmatched.

“We spent hours and hours there,” Ferraroni recalled. “Kobe was always available to play basketball. He didn’t want to leave the court, especially if he had lost the last game. He would always say, ‘Play one more, play one more.’”

Even as a child, Kobe’s relentless drive and focus set him apart. Though smaller than many of his peers, his mentality and determination were extraordinary – traits that would later define his legendary NBA career.

A Childhood of Passion and Determination

While basketball was Kobe’s main passion, he was less interested in school. Giada Maslovaric, a close childhood friend, recalls his first day at their new school in Reggio Emilia. Tasked with looking after him, she quickly became one of his closest companions.

The pair spent countless hours riding bikes through cobbled streets, enjoying Reggio Emilia’s famous gelato, and dreaming of the future.

“Kobe would always say he’d play for the NBA,” Maslovaric said. “Whenever the topic came up, he wasn’t joking. I laughed, but he never did. He’d simply say, ‘I’ll get there.’”

The Journey to the NBA

Kobe’s dream came true. After returning to the United States, he quickly rose to prominence, becoming the first guard in history to be drafted into the NBA straight out of high school in 1996. Joining the Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe would go on to become a five-time NBA champion, a global icon, and a beloved father and husband.

A Heartfelt Reunion in Reggio Emilia

In 2003, years after leaving Italy, Kobe returned to Reggio Emilia and sought out Maslovaric. He found her at her mother’s clothing store, and the two reconnected.

During their meeting, Maslovaric was struck by Kobe’s reflections on fame. To her, Reggio Emilia seemed like the last place where Kobe had experienced normalcy. He confided that his rise to stardom came with isolation and challenges, likening his life to a “stunning cage” made of platinum and diamonds. Yet, he explained that the sacrifice was worth it for the joy he felt on the court.

A Lasting Legacy in Reggio Emilia

Kobe’s untimely death in 2020, along with his daughter Gianna, left the world and the city of Reggio Emilia in mourning. The community honored him by naming a plaza after him and Gianna, and murals celebrating his life now adorn the city.

Maslovaric sees Kobe’s legacy as a beacon of hope for the children of Reggio Emilia. “Kobe has left Reggio with the message that every child, no matter how ordinary their life, can achieve their dreams,” she said. “And that’s something extraordinary.”

From Italy to Immortality

Kobe Bryant’s journey from a tiny Italian playground to NBA superstardom is a testament to his unparalleled determination and love for the game. That small court in Reggio Emilia wasn’t just where a basketball player practiced; it was where a legend was born.

South Florida‘s Amir Abdur-Rahim, one of the brightest young coaches in college basketball, died Thursday at age 43, the school announced.

Abdur-Rahim was undergoing a medical procedure at a Tampa-area hospital when he died due to complications that arose, the school said.

“All of us with South Florida Athletics are grieving with the loved ones of Coach Abdur-Rahim,” USF athletic director Michael Kelly said in a statement. “He was authentic, driven, and his infectious personality captivated all of Bulls Nation. Coach Abdur-Rahim leaves a lasting impact on our student-athletes, the University, and the community. We are supporting those closest to him, including his family, team, and athletics staff, to ensure they have the resources they need to deal with this tremendous loss.”

Abdur-Rahim guided the South Florida men’s team to one of the biggest turnarounds in the country last season, leading the Bulls to a program-record 25 wins and their first American Athletic Conference regular-season title. Prior to Abdur-Rahim taking over in 2023, the school had never finished .500 in the AAC and had ended above .500 overall just once since 2012. He was selected as the AAC Coach of the Year.

The Bulls were also ranked in the men’s AP Top 25 for the first time in school history, earning a spot for two weeks in late February and early March.

“I asked [Kelly], ‘You afraid of heights?'” Abdur-Rahim said at his introductory news conference in March 2023. “‘Because you’re going to have to get up on that ladder one day to cut down those nets.'”

Abdur-Rahim spent four seasons at Kennesaw State before moving to South Florida, leading the Owls to an NCAA tournament appearance in 2023. He was the architect of a dramatic program rebuild, going from one win in his first season at the helm to 26 in his final campaign. He won the Hugh Durham Award in 2023, given annually to the nation’s best mid-major coach, and was named ASUN Coach of the Year.

“There are people that have been here that care about this program. It was a place with no identity but was on the cusp of being able to do something real special,” Abdur-Rahim told ESPN after Kennesaw State won the Atlantic Sun tournament.

“It’s nuts, to be honest with you.”

Abdur-Rahim is the younger brother of former California star and NBA veteran Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who is now president of the NBA G League.

A longtime assistant coach, Abdur-Rahim spent time on staffs at Georgia, Texas A&M, Charleston, Georgia Tech and Murray State. While on Tom Crean’s staff at Georgia, the Atlanta native helped the Bulldogs sign top-five recruit Anthony Edwards, who went on to be the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA draft.

Before Abdur-Rahim left Georgia for Kennesaw State, he called Edwards to get his blessing.

“Signing a guy like Anthony, that’s a relationship that had been four years building and in the making. There were people around it that I had real relationships with that trusted myself and the coaching staff at Georgia, that trusted me to be there,” Abdur-Rahim said on the “Coaching Origins” podcast in 2022. “Before I accepted the job, I called a few people, I called Anthony and I just said, ‘Hey man, I got this opportunity, but if you need me here, I’ll stay. I’m perfectly OK with it.’

“I wouldn’t have been able to recruit the players that I’ve recruited if it weren’t for those, I call them, real relationships. Whether I got the kid or not. That person over there was going to be OK with me no matter what, and I was going to be OK with them.”

Abdur-Rahim played for Billy Kennedy — whom he would later coach under at Murray State and Texas A&M — for three seasons at Southeastern Louisiana. He was a three-time All-Southland selection and finished in the top 10 in program history for points, 3-pointers made and steals.

“In a very short time, Coach Abdur-Rahim made an indelible impact on the University of South Florida. In his first season as our head coach, he brought an unmatched enthusiasm, achieved unprecedented success and helped generate unforgettable memories for Bulls Nation,” USF president Rhea Law said. “Throughout my time working with Coach Abdur-Rahim, I was continually inspired by his leadership, and truly admired his sincere approach to connecting with our entire student body. His influence on our student-athletes, coaching staff and the university community will live on forever.”

Abdur-Rahim is survived by his wife, Arianne, and their three children: daughters Laila and Lana and son Aydin.
