Sharif made the commitment during a visit to Quetta, the provincial capital, where he met grieving families and chaired a high-level security meeting attended by army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti.

Pakistani authorities said security forces have been conducting counterterrorism operations since Monday in response to the attacks, killing at least 54 insurgents, according to the military and local officials.

Deadliest attack targeted police officers

The most lethal assault occurred Monday in Balochistan’s Ziarat district, where militants attacked a police post, killing nine officers.

Authorities said 18 additional officers who were abducted during the attack were later killed by their captors, making the incident the deadliest of several coordinated assaults attributed to the outlawed Baloch Liberation Army.

The killings prompted relatives of about two dozen police officers to stage a sit-in protest in Quetta alongside the victims’ bodies, demanding justice and stronger action against those responsible.

Government vows continued operations

Speaking during the security meeting, Sharif said Pakistan would continue its campaign against militant groups.

“The war against terrorism will continue until the last terrorist in Pakistan is eliminated,” he said in televised remarks.

The prime minister said there was “no doubt” that Pakistan’s eastern neighbor was supporting the insurgency by supplying militants with weapons, funding and other assistance, although he did not directly name India.

Sharif also alleged that militants were using Afghan territory to launch attacks in both Balochistan and the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying the government would defeat what he described as their “nefarious designs.”

There was no immediate response from authorities in Kabul or New Delhi. Both governments have previously rejected similar accusations from Pakistan.

Insurgency remains a major security challenge

Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest but least populated province, has experienced a long-running separatist insurgency, with armed groups demanding greater autonomy or independence from Islamabad.

The province has also faced attacks by Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a militant organization that is separate from but allied with Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers.

Pakistani officials say the TTP has become increasingly active since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in neighboring Afghanistan in 2021.

The latest attacks have heightened concerns that separatist groups previously viewed as relatively limited in capability are expanding both their operational reach and their ability to carry out coordinated assaults against Pakistan’s security forces.

The crash occurred in the remote area of Dana Sar, where the bus veered off the road and fell into a ravine about 25 meters (80 feet) deep. Shahid Rind, a spokesperson for the Balochistan government, said the vehicle had become overcrowded after taking on passengers from another bus that had broken down during the journey.

Authorities said the bus was carrying 48 passengers at the time of the crash. Rescue teams continued working for hours to identify those killed and transport victims from the difficult mountain terrain to nearby hospitals.

Investigation Underway

One injured survivor told local media from a hospital that several passengers objected after the driver stopped to pick up travelers from the disabled bus. The survivor claimed an argument followed and alleged that one passenger grabbed the driver by the neck before the bus went out of control.

Police said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. The survivor’s account could not be independently verified.

Challenging Rescue Operation

Emergency workers, assisted by paramilitary personnel, descended the steep mountainside to reach the wreckage, according to official Noor Zaman. Rescuers carried injured survivors on stretchers while recovering victims using makeshift carts to move them back up the rugged slope.

Regional administrator Hazrat Wali Kakar said the injured and those killed were transported to nearby hospitals. Most victims were identified using personal documents, although three bodies had not yet been identified.

Families Seek Information

The accident prompted anxious relatives across Pakistan to contact hospitals, emergency services and police in search of information about family members traveling on the bus.

In the northwestern city of Peshawar, resident Nasir Khan said his brother had called from Quetta the previous evening to say he was traveling home on the bus. When he failed to arrive, the family feared he had been involved in the crash and sought information from authorities.

National Condolences

Asif Ali Zardari expressed sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the families of those who died.

Road accidents remain a significant public safety challenge in Pakistan, where poor road conditions, limited enforcement of traffic regulations and unsafe driving practices contribute to frequent fatal crashes, particularly in mountainous regions. In May, a separate motorway collision in northwestern Pakistan killed 17 people and injured five others.

Authorities are continuing efforts to identify the remaining victims while investigators work to determine the cause of Friday’s crash.

A bomb blast at a railway station in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province has killed at least 25 people and injured dozens more. The explosion occurred as a popular morning train was about to depart from Quetta station, bound for Peshawar.

The Balochistan Liberation Army, a separatist militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack, which authorities are investigating as a suicide bombing. The group has been increasingly active in the region, demanding independence and control over local resources.

According to the city’s commissioner, the suicide bomber was among the fatalities, while about 50 others were injured in the blast. Senior police official Muhammad Baloch stated that the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber carrying 6 to 8 kilograms of explosives. The victims included both civilians and military personnel.

Videos shared on social media show the moment of the explosion on Saturday morning, with dozens of people visible on the platform at the time. Footage from the aftermath depicts injured individuals and debris scattered throughout the station.

One of the injured, Abdul Jabbar, recalled the horrifying moment he was entering the station to catch his train. “I can’t describe the horror I faced today, it was like judgment day had come,” he said. Muhammad Sohail, who arrived after the explosion, described the scene as chaotic, with people lying on the ground and screaming for help.

The Balochistan Liberation Army stated that the target of the attack was a Pakistan military unit returning from a training course in Quetta. Police later confirmed that 14 soldiers were among the dead.

The chief minister of Balochistan, Mir Sarfraz Bugti, condemned the attack, calling the perpetrators “worse than animals” and vowed to bring them to justice. Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, also condemned the blast, calling those responsible “enemies of humanity.”

Balochistan is Pakistan’s largest and most resource-rich province, but it remains one of the least developed. The region shares a volatile border with Iran and Taliban-controlled Afghanistan and has a strategic coastline along the Arabian Sea.

In August, at least 73 people were killed in a series of attacks claimed by the Balochistan Liberation Army, which targeted police stations, railways, and highways. The group has been waging a decades-long insurgency to gain independence for the region.
