BEIJING, China – Chinese authorities said a light aircraft crashed into a high-rise building in Beijing on Friday evening, killing the pilot and injuring 13 people in an incident that has prompted an official investigation in the Chinese capital.

Authorities in Beijing’s Chaoyang district said the two-seat light sport aircraft struck the building near the East Third Ring Road at approximately 5:55 p.m. local time. Officials confirmed that the pilot, who was the only person on board, died in the crash, while 13 others were injured and are receiving medical treatment.

Authorities did not identify the pilot or specify which building was involved in the brief statement released through WeChat. They also did not clarify whether those injured were inside the building or were struck by falling debris.

Investigation Underway

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. Officials said an investigation is underway, though no additional details have been released.

The incident occurred in a city known for strict airspace regulations, including recent restrictions on drone operations. Authorities have not indicated whether weather, mechanical issues or other factors may have contributed to the accident.

Flight Data Points to CITIC Tower

Flight-tracking service Flightradar24 reported that the aircraft collided with the CITIC Tower, also known as China Zun, one of Beijing’s most recognizable skyscrapers. The company also shared flight tracking data showing the aircraft, identified as a Sunward SA 60L Aurora, departing from an airport approximately 50 kilometers east of Beijing before its flight path ended near the East Third Ring Road.

Associated Press photographs taken on Saturday showed visible damage to one section of the tower’s glass exterior, where an apparent impact point had been covered.

The 108-story CITIC Tower rises more than 528 meters (1,700 feet), making it the tallest building in Beijing. The skyscraper is located in the capital’s central business district.

Social Media Posts Removed

Images and videos circulating on social media appeared to show aircraft debris near the building. While the material was consistent with the reported location, its authenticity could not be independently verified.

Posts discussing the crash were removed from Chinese social media platforms on Friday, while footage continued circulating on overseas platforms. A report published by financial news outlet Caixin later became inaccessible, reflecting the sensitivity surrounding such incidents in China.

Aircraft Operator and Manufacturer

According to Flightradar24, the aircraft was operated by Shuangyue General Aviation, which appears to refer to Dongshi Shuangyue (Beijing) General Aviation. The company’s website was inaccessible on Saturday. An online platform citing official data described the firm as providing services including private pilot training and aerial sightseeing flights.

The aircraft involved was identified as a Sunward SA 60L Aurora, manufactured by Starair Aircraft in China’s Hunan province. Information published on the manufacturer’s website states that the single-engine aircraft accounts for more than 70% of China’s light sport aircraft market and has also been exported to Australia and the United States.

Starair says the SA 60L Aurora has a maximum cruising speed of 220 kilometers (137 miles) per hour and a maximum takeoff weight of 600 kilograms (1,322 pounds).

US Navy Loses $60 Million Fighter Jet in Red Sea Incident

The US Navy has lost a $60 million F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet after it accidentally fell overboard from the USS Harry S. Truman during towing operations, officials confirmed Monday.

According to initial reports, the aircraft carrier had to make a sudden hard turn to evade incoming fire from Houthi rebels, which likely contributed to the mishap. The incident occurred in the Red Sea, where the Harry S. Truman is currently deployed as part of a major US military operation against Houthi forces.

All sailors aboard were accounted for, though one suffered a minor injury during the event.

In a statement, the Navy explained that the jet was being moved inside the ship’s hangar bay when the crew lost control. Both the aircraft and the tow tractor plunged into the sea. Sailors towing the plane quickly took action to clear the area before it went overboard, the Navy said. An investigation is now underway.

A second official confirmed to CNN that the Super Hornet has sunk. Each F/A-18E Super Hornet carries a hefty price tag, with the Navy estimating the cost at over $60 million.

Despite the loss, Navy officials emphasized that the Truman Carrier Strike Group and its air wing remain fully mission capable.

The Harry S. Truman has had a rough deployment in the Middle East. In addition to frequent attacks from Iran-backed Houthis, the carrier made headlines in February when it collided with a merchant ship near Egypt — though no injuries were reported. In another incident last December, a different F/A-18 from the Truman was mistakenly shot down by the USS Gettysburg during an exercise in the Red Sea. Thankfully, both pilots ejected safely.

A small plane traveling from Iowa to Minnesota tragically crashed into a house in Brooklyn Park, a Minneapolis suburb, on Saturday, claiming at least one life. The plane, a single-engine SOCATA TBM7, had departed from Des Moines International Airport with its final destination set for Anoka County-Blaine Airport in Minnesota.

According to Brooklyn Park spokesperson Risikat Adesaogun, the residents of the home were fortunate to have escaped unharmed, though their house was completely destroyed by the crash. The exact number of passengers aboard the aircraft remains unclear, as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) continues to gather details.

Local authorities have turned over the investigation to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which will work to determine the cause of the tragic incident.

This heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with aviation, and the investigation into the crash is ongoing. More updates will follow as details emerge.

Delta Plane Flips Upside Down on Landing at Toronto Airport, Injuring 18

A Delta Air Lines regional jet flipped upside down upon landing at Toronto Pearson Airport on Monday amid windy weather following a snowstorm, injuring 18 of the 80 people on board, officials said.

Crash Details

The CRJ900 aircraft, operated by Delta’s Endeavor Air subsidiary, was arriving from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport when it encountered trouble upon landing. The aircraft, manufactured by Bombardier and powered by GE Aerospace engines, can seat up to 90 passengers.

Among the injured, three passengers—including a child—suffered critical injuries, according to authorities.

Eyewitness Accounts

Passenger John Nelson captured a video of the aftermath, showing a fire engine spraying water on the overturned plane resting on the snow-covered tarmac.

“There was no indication of anything unusual before landing,” Nelson told CNN.
“We hit the ground, and we were sideways, and then we were upside down. I was able to just unbuckle and push myself to the ground. Some people were hanging and needed help getting down.”

A recording from liveatc.net captured an emergency worker reporting to the air traffic control tower:
“The aircraft is upside down and burning.”

Weather & Airport Conditions

Toronto Pearson Airport was experiencing high winds and freezing temperatures as airlines worked to recover from a weekend snowstorm, which dumped over 22 cm (8.6 inches) of snow.

The Delta flight landed at 2:13 p.m. (1913 GMT) after an 86-minute journey and came to rest near the intersection of runways 23 and 15, according to FlightRadar24.

Response & Investigation

Emergency responders arrived quickly, preventing further casualties.

Deborah Flint, president of Toronto Pearson Airport, credited first responders for ensuring there were no fatalities.

Michael J. McCormick, an air traffic expert, noted that the plane flipping upside down made this crash highly unusual, stating:
“The fact that 80 people survived is a testament to aircraft engineering and safety regulations that prevent fatalities in such incidents.”

Impact on Flights & Airport Operations

The airport was shut down for over two hours, causing delays and flight diversions to Montreal-Trudeau International Airport and other locations.

Two runways remained closed for investigation, leading to continued flight disruptions.

Ongoing Investigation

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has launched an investigation, with assistance from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which acquired Bombardier’s CRJ program in 2020, stated it would fully cooperate with the investigation.

Recent Aviation Accidents in North America

This crash follows other recent air disasters:

A CRJ-700 passenger jet collided with an Army helicopter in Washington, killing 67 people.

A medical transport plane crashed in Philadelphia, killing at least seven people.

A passenger plane in Alaska crashed, resulting in 10 fatalities.
