I find myself deep in the trees, thigh-deep in powder, struggling through the snow. Instead of riding my board, I’m carrying it, muttering about taking the wrong line. Meanwhile, just 20 feet below, Chris Laurent from Paris has his own dilemma.

“I can’t find my ski,” he exclaims, both laughing and swearing as he digs through a growing mound of fresh snow.

These are the challenges that skiers and snowboarders dream of—and pay to experience.

Welcome to Niseko, the powder capital of Asia, and some say, the world.

Japan has long been revered as a mecca for powder skiing. However, in recent years, warming winters, declining snowfall, and a shrinking number of local skiers and snowboarders have threatened its once-thriving resorts.

But this season brought renewed excitement. With the La Niña weather pattern—a period of cooler temperatures—returning, industry insiders anticipated massive snowfalls reminiscent of Niseko’s legendary past. Their hopes were justified. Early in the season, Niseko shattered a 68-year-old record for December snowfall.

After a brief lull in January, February saw an influx of Siberian cold fronts sweeping across the Sea of Japan, dumping fresh powder on Hokkaido’s most famous ski town.

Jia-Rong Chen, a former tech employee from Tokyo, came to Niseko for the season and experienced the town’s signature snowfall firsthand.

“It snows a lot—truly the best quality snow in Japan. Early in the season, I went up every day. But by mid-season, I was almost spoiled. I’d had enough powder already,” he admits.

While snowfall may fluctuate throughout the season, Niseko remains consistent compared to other resorts. Even as Japan’s aging population and declining ski culture have led to hundreds of resort closures, Niseko continues to thrive.

Unlike other struggling resorts, Niseko has seen a surge in foreign visitors and luxury developments. High-end hotels like Setsu Niseko—winner of the World’s Best New Ski Hotel at the 2023 World Ski Awards—and Muwa Niseko are setting new standards for hospitality. Michelin-starred Japanese chefs are also investing in the region, ensuring that Niseko remains not just a ski town but a high-end winter destination.

A key factor behind the area’s snow reliability is the local belief that Mount Yotei—a towering peak resembling Mount Fuji—is a “snow catcher,” ensuring consistent snowfall. Climatologists agree that Niseko’s geography makes it uniquely positioned to receive dry, light powder when Siberian cold fronts collide with the warm moisture of the Sea of Japan.

Despite its consistent snowfall, experts remain cautious about the long-term effects of climate change.

“December temperatures were below normal, but January was abnormally hot. La Niña is rapidly decaying,” says Professor Tomonori Sato, a meteorological researcher from Hokkaido University. “In my hometown of Niigata, the snow is very wet and heavy. But in Hokkaido, it remains dry and light—ideal for skiing.”

Hokkaido’s unique climate, surrounded by water, fuels the weather systems responsible for its legendary powder. While global warming remains a concern, most experts believe Niseko’s appeal will endure.

Before the pandemic, Niseko was often referred to as an “Aussie town,” with Australians making up about 50% of visitors. Today, that figure has dropped to just over 20%, but overall visitor numbers have surged, with more travelers coming from North America, Europe, and beyond.

“The biggest shift for us has been the rise of American visitors,” says Patrick Ohtani, COO of Luxe Nomad, which manages high-end properties across Asia. “In 2017, U.S. visitors accounted for only 619 guest nights. This year, we’ve booked 4,823 nights—an increase of 404%. Revenue from U.S. travelers has jumped by 130%.”

The introduction of the IKON pass, which grants skiers seven days of unrestricted access to Niseko United, has contributed to this growth. More American skiers, even those with access to world-class resorts back home, are now flying halfway around the globe to experience Niseko’s unparalleled powder.

A stroll through Hirafu, Niseko’s most upscale ski village, reveals just how much the town has transformed. Preening influencers snap selfies in luxury snowsuits, while others sip champagne in a Louis Vuitton-designed yurt. Michelin-starred food trucks serve dumplings, while upscale steakhouses charge $170 for premium cuts.

Heli-ski operators cater to affluent thrill-seekers, and luxury concierge services offer everything from private chef’s tables to exclusive snowmobile tours.

Gone are the days when Niseko was simply called the “Vale of the East” or the “St. Moritz of Japan.” Today, it’s a world-class destination in its own right.

“I’ve been in Niseko for 10 years, and I don’t think we’ve ever had a bad snow year,” says Ohtani. “We’re incredibly lucky—Siberian winds pick up moisture, hit a high-pressure system, and the snow just starts falling. Compared to other ski destinations, our altitude plays a major role.”

For now, Niseko remains bulletproof—an evolving, luxury-laden haven for powder seekers from across the globe. And as long as the snow keeps falling, the legend of Niseko will continue to grow.

A simple vacation photo taken by Shanghai-based designer Guo Qingshan on Valentine’s Day has turned into an internet sensation, even creating a new tourist attraction in China.

A Magical Discovery

In late January, Guo was visiting his hometown of Yichang, Hubei province, when he went on a hike. Later, while reviewing his photos, he noticed something extraordinary—a mountain shaped like a dog’s head resting by the Yangtze River, its snout seemingly perched at the water’s edge.

“It was so magical and cute. I was so excited and happy when I discovered it,” Guo said.

He described the mountain as resembling a puppy drinking water or gazing at fish, adding that it also seemed to be peacefully guarding the river.

A Social Media Phenomenon

Guo shared the image on Xiaohongshu (RedNote), a Chinese social media platform, with the caption “Puppy Mountain.” The post quickly gained traction, receiving 120,000 likes in just 10 days. On Weibo, the hashtag #xiaogoushan (Chinese for “Puppy Mountain“) attracted millions of views.

The viral moment sparked an unexpected trend—dog owners began posting pictures of their own pets, comparing them to the mountain. Some travelers even made their way to Yichang to see “Puppy Mountain” in person, many bringing their dogs for photos.

The mountain is located in Zigui County, Yichang, and is best viewed from an observation deck overlooking the Yangtze River—China’s longest and the world’s third-longest river.

Guo’s viral photo also led to an unexpected realization: locals had seen the mountain before but never noticed its resemblance to a dog. Many revisited old photos from the same observation deck, surprised to find that the “Puppy” had always been there.

In 1994, three friends—Scott Behringer, George Gilbert, and Tim Korber—posed for a now-iconic photo on a beach in Cabo San Lucas. With their arms crossed, baseball caps worn backward, and vibrant ‘90s beachwear, the image captured more than just a fun moment—it represented a bond that would last for decades.

But their story began years before that.

Tim and Patty Korber, both doctors from California, first met fellow American travelers Scott and Cheree Behringer in Cancun, Mexico, during the summer of 1986. From strangers to fast friends, the two couples instantly connected.

“We just had this instant bond,” recalls Patty. Their friendship quickly turned into a shared passion for travel, and they soon planned more trips together.

A couple of years later, on another adventure, they met George and Debbie Gilbert on a flight. Another connection was made, and before they knew it, the six of them became inseparable travel companions.

By coincidence, all three couples lived in California, making it easy to nurture their friendship beyond vacations. Over the years, they became more than just travel buddies—they became family.

The ‘Iconic Photo’ That Defined Their Friendship

Among the countless pictures taken on their travels, the 1994 Cabo beach photo stood out.

“It was Scott who pulled it out from the pile, had it blown up, and put it on his desk,” says Tim. “He said, ‘This is just such a cool photo of the three of us.’”

The image, full of ‘90s charm and brotherly camaraderie, became a symbol of their enduring friendship. So much so that, over the years, the trio often recreated the same arms-crossed pose on different vacations.

“They could pretty much just spontaneously recreate it at any moment,” laughs Patty.

Then, in late 2024, the perfect opportunity arose for an official recreation. George and Debbie’s son was getting married in Cabo—right where the original picture was taken.

Recreating a Moment, Preserving a Legacy

Determined to match the original as closely as possible, the three friends quickly started planning.

“The guys were like, ‘Let’s grow a goatee,’” Tim remembers, laughing. “And I’m like, ‘You needed to give me six months’ notice for that!’”

Facial hair aside, they nailed the look. Tim found a ‘90s-style belt bag, bright swim trunks, and a tank top. Scott and George scoured their closets for their best retro outfits, packing them alongside wedding attire.

Once in Cabo, they set out to find the exact spot from 30 years ago. With Patty behind the camera and Cheree and Debbie comparing details, they walked up and down the beach until they found it—though time had changed the backdrop.

“There was a hurricane in between the two photos,” Patty notes. “It wiped out all the palapas that were in the background of the first picture.”

Still, the moment was perfect. As they posed, George’s son spotted them and asked what they were doing. When they explained the history, he and his best friends decided to continue the tradition, striking the same pose for their own photo.

“It’s become an iconic pose not just for us, but for future generations,” says George.

“When something happens and I need advice, I look to this group before I even look to my family,” says Scott.

Their adventures have taken them from Cabo to California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, from snorkeling in Hawaii to an unforgettable South African safari. They’ve even survived mishaps—like the time they shared a tiny houseboat that unexpectedly slipped its mooring.

“You’ve got to have a good sense of humor, especially when houseboats break loose in the middle of the night,” laughs Cheree.

And humor is something they never run short on.

“Tim doesn’t have an off switch—he’s always on and funny, and Scott and George are right there behind him,” says Patty.

A Friendship That Travels Through Time

As they continue their journeys together, Cabo remains a special place—where it all began and where new memories are still being made.

“It’s where we became friends,” says Debbie. “It’s full of special memories.”

Su Min films her daily experiences, sharing everything from her cooking to her plans for the next day.
