Virginia Congressman Gerry Connolly Dies at 75 After Cancer Battle

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democratic Congressman Gerry Connolly of Virginia has passed away at the age of 75, his family confirmed in a heartfelt statement released Wednesday morning.

“It is with immense sadness that we share that our devoted and loving father, husband, brother, friend, and public servant, Congressman Gerald E. Connolly, passed away peacefully at his home this morning surrounded by family,” the statement read.

A respected lawmaker known for his sharp wit and deep dedication to public service, Connolly represented Virginia’s 11th District — encompassing parts of Northern Virginia — since 2009. Prior to his time in Congress, he served on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for 14 years, earning a reputation as a tireless advocate for his community.

Just last month, Connolly announced he would not seek re-election and would be stepping down from his leadership post on the influential House Oversight Committee. His decision followed the return of esophageal cancer, a diagnosis he first disclosed in November.

“When I announced my diagnosis six months ago, I promised transparency,” Connolly said in his April statement. “After grueling treatments, we’ve learned that the cancer, while initially beaten back, has now returned. I’ll do everything possible to continue to represent you and thank you for your grace.”

Connolly’s passing marks the end of a long and impactful political career defined by his commitment to fairness, equity, and principled leadership. Known for standing up for the vulnerable and voiceless, he earned the respect of colleagues across the aisle and left a mark on national policy, especially in the areas of government oversight, federal workforce protections, and local development.

“Gerry lived his life to give back to others and make our community better,” his family shared. “He looked out for the disadvantaged and voiceless. He always stood up for what is right and just. His absence will leave a hole in our hearts, but we are proud that his life’s work will endure for future generations.”

This is a developing story and updates will follow as more details become available.
