Ozzy Osbourne Bids Final Farewell with Star-Studded Sabbath Send-Off in Birmingham
Heavy Metal Icon Closes the Curtain at Historic “Back to the Beginning” Benefit Show
A Legendary Farewell in the Heart of Birmingham
In an emotional and electrifying farewell, Ozzy Osbourne performed what he says will be his final live show, joined by the original Black Sabbath lineup for the first time in two decades. The epic event, dubbed Back to the Beginning, brought 40,000 fans to Aston Villa’s Villa Park—just blocks from Ozzy’s childhood home.
Supported by a jaw-dropping lineup of rock royalty—including Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler—the concert marked a historic moment in the legacy of heavy metal.
Despite health challenges, including Parkinson’s disease, the 76-year-old “Prince of Darkness” delivered a triumphant performance from a black throne, proving that even seated, he remains a commanding presence.
“You Have No Idea How I Feel”: Ozzy’s Emotional Goodbye
From the moment he rose from beneath the stage in his signature black leather coat and gold armband, the crowd erupted. “Are you ready? Let the madness begin!” he declared, before launching into five solo hits and later reuniting with guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward for a Black Sabbath finale that included the anthemic “Paranoid.”
“You have no idea how I feel. Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Ozzy told the crowd, visibly moved.
Though his voice occasionally wavered, the emotion and intensity behind every note left fans awestruck. His final bow was not just a goodbye—it was a celebration of a groundbreaking career that helped invent a genre.
A Global Pilgrimage to Metal’s Birthplace
Fans traveled from around the world to witness what many dubbed the “Heavy Metal Live Aid.” The atmosphere was electric—mosh pits broke out across the pitch, a sea of Sabbath shirts flooded the venue, and inflatable bats paid cheeky tribute to Ozzy’s infamous 1982 bat-biting stunt.
Tickets for the all-day marathon gig ranged from £200 to £2,000, with all proceeds benefiting Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Acorn Children’s Hospice.
Metal Titans Honor the Godfathers of the Genre
The guest list read like a Hall of Fame roll call. Metallica frontman James Hetfield gave a heartfelt tribute, saying, “Without Sabbath, there would be no Metallica. Thank you for giving us a purpose in life.”
Guns N’ Roses tore through a cover of Sabbath’s “Never Say Die,” with Axl Rose screaming, “Birmingham! Ozzy! Sabbath! Thank you!” Steven Tyler, rebounding from recent vocal issues, performed with a supergroup that included Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood and Blink-182’s Travis Barker.
The revolving roster of rock icons also featured Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), KK Downing (Judas Priest), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), and Tobias Forge (Ghost), among others.
Supergroups, Drum-Offs, and a Wild Mosh with Jason Momoa
Beyond the music, the spectacle included a “drum-off” showdown between Barker, Smith, and Tool’s Danny Carey. Rising star Yungblud brought a touch of vulnerability with a stirring rendition of Sabbath’s ballad “Changes.”
Hollywood star Jason Momoa served as the night’s compere—and even leapt into the mosh pit. “Make some space for me, I’m coming in,” he shouted. He later told the crowd, “We are witnessing the best to ever do it. This is history.”
Video tributes came from Jack Black, Dolly Parton, Billy Idol, and Sammy Hagar. “Everyone looks at Sabbath like kings,” Hagar told BBC News backstage. “This is the greatest metal event of all time.”
Ozzy Reflects on the End of the Road
“This is a goodbye as far as my live performances go,” Ozzy told organizers before the show. “And what a way to go out.”
He added that the support of his peers “means everything” to him. “I am forever in their debt for showing up for me and the fans. I can’t quite put it into words, but I feel very emotional and blessed.”
