New York Dolls Singer David Johansen Dies at 75 After Battle with Stage 4 Cancer

Music Legend Passes Away Following Public Plea for Support

David Johansen, the iconic frontman of the New York Dolls, has died at the age of 75 after a long and private battle with Stage 4 cancer and a brain tumor. His passing was confirmed on Friday, March 1, 2025, by his wife, Mara Hennessey.

Final Moments Surrounded by Love

Hennessey shared with Fox News Digital that Johansen passed away peacefully in their “sunny bedroom, surrounded by flowers and music, holding hands with me and our daughter, Leah.”

“We had a marvelous adventure of a life together. He was an extraordinary man. So grateful we went public with news of his illness before his passing, as the past couple of weeks have been full of messages and love from family, friends, and fans.”
— Mara Hennessey

A Silent Battle with Cancer

In February 2025, Johansen’s family revealed that he had been battling Stage 4 cancer for several years, undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, and multiple surgeries. Despite the harsh treatments, he remained resilient, holding onto his signature humor and indomitable spirit.

“He’s always been like this. He claims it’s because he’s half Norwegian.”
— Mara Hennessey

Family’s Plea for Help

As medical bills mounted, Mara and Leah turned to the public for support.

“Our family has reached the point where we need more support. We’ve run up some serious debt caring for our beloved David and are facing still more unmanageable expenses. This trying to be low-key is not sustainable.”

Johansen’s daughter, Leah Hennessey, took to Instagram last month, urging fans to help through the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, an organization that supports musicians facing serious health struggles.

“David is a legend, but he’s also my very real, very sick dad. If you love David or any of the magic he’s brought into the world, please just take a minute to read this or share it.”

A Devastating Setback

Adding to his health struggles, Johansen suffered a tragic accident the day after Thanksgiving 2024, falling down the stairs and breaking his back in two places. His daughter revealed that after undergoing surgery, his condition worsened dramatically, leaving him bedridden and incapacitated.

“Due to the trauma, David’s illness has progressed exponentially, and my mother has been caring for him around the clock.”

A Lasting Legacy

David Johansen leaves behind an incredible musical legacy, influencing generations of rock and punk artists. The New York Dolls, formed in the early 1970s, were pioneers of glam punk, paving the way for future acts with their rebellious style and electric performances.

Fans, friends, and fellow musicians continue to pour in tributes, celebrating his impact on music and culture.

Rest in Peace, David Johansen (1950-2025).
