Russia Strikes Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure, Causes Widespread Power Outages
Russia has launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, according to Ukraine’s Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko. He confirmed the attacks, which targeted energy facilities across the country, causing widespread explosions in several cities.
Halushchenko stated on Facebook that the strikes were happening “all over Ukraine” and that emergency power outages had been implemented. He urged citizens to seek shelter for safety.
On Thursday morning, the Ukrainian air force issued a nationwide air raid warning, citing the threat of incoming missiles. In the days leading up to this, Russia had conducted about 1,500 airstrikes across Ukraine, hitting approximately half of the country’s regions.
The air force continued to warn of incoming missiles, rockets, and drones targeting various areas, including Kyiv, Rivne, Vinnytsia, Kropyvnytskyi, Balta, and Mykolaiv.
Kharkiv’s mayor, Igor Terekhov, reported shelling in a civilian area, while Lutsk’s mayor, Ihor Polishchuk, mentioned hearing multiple explosions, with part of the city experiencing power outages.
In Odesa, a key port city, local media outlet Zerkalo Tyzhnya reported explosions, and regional governor Oleg Kiper advised residents to stay in safe locations. Authorities in Sumy and Volyn also reported being hit by strikes.
