Tragedy in the Skies: Air India Flight AI171 Crashes After Takeoff, Killing All 242 Onboard

AHMEDABAD, India — In one of the deadliest air disasters in recent Indian aviation history, Air India Flight AI171, bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, a modern wide-body aircraft lauded for its safety and efficiency, went down just five minutes into its flight, killing all 242 people onboard and five more on the ground.A Routine Takeoff Turns Catastrophic

Flight AI171 departed Ahmedabad at 1:38 PM IST. Within minutes, the pilot issued a Mayday call, citing technical difficulties at just 625 feet of altitude. Moments later, the aircraft plunged into the Meghani Nagar neighborhood, crashing into a doctors’ hostel near B.J. Medical College and exploding into flames. Thick black smoke quickly filled the sky as emergency crews rushed to the scene.

Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene of chaos, fire, and destruction. At least 50 civilians on the ground were injured, several critically.

Who Was on Board

Among the 230 passengers and 12 crew members, nationalities included:

  • 169 Indians
  • 53 British citizens
  • 7 Portuguese nationals
  • 1 Canadian

One of the passengers was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, officials confirmed. No survivors have been reported.

On the Ground: Devastation and Desperation

Local news stations aired graphic images of burning debris, crumpled metal, and overwhelmed first responders. More than 100 bodies have been recovered and transported to area hospitals for identification. Emergency crews worked through the night under floodlights to retrieve remains and assist the injured.

The crash site—densely populated and near a major hospital complex—intensified the devastation, with five confirmed fatalities among residents and dozens injured in the blast radius.

Global Response: Mourning and Mobilization

The tragedy has drawn an outpouring of condolences from around the world.

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a “heartbreaking loss of life” and pledged full support for the victims’ families.
  • UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Foreign Minister David Lammy both issued statements of solidarity, particularly in light of the 50+ British nationals lost.
  • King Charles III expressed his condolences, calling the tragedy “profoundly saddening.”

Air India, the Tata Group, and Boeing have established emergency hotlines and crisis centers for the affected families in Ahmedabad and at London’s Gatwick Airport, where passengers were expected to arrive.

Investigators Eye Possible Technical Malfunction

India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), along with teams from Boeing and GE Aerospace, has launched a full investigation. Early reports point to possible flap or slat misconfiguration, which could have severely impacted the aircraft’s ability to climb after takeoff.

This marks the first-ever crash of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a jetliner introduced in 2011 and widely praised for its fuel efficiency, composite materials, and strong safety record. The aircraft had logged thousands of safe flights before this incident.

Broader Fallout for Boeing and Air India

The crash has already sent shockwaves through the aviation industry. Boeing’s stock fell sharply in pre-market trading amid renewed scrutiny over safety and mechanical reliability. The company has been under pressure in recent years due to earlier incidents involving the 737 MAX.

Air India, once government-owned and now part of the Tata Group following its 2022 privatization, has been undergoing a major modernization and expansion. This tragedy could deeply impact public confidence in the airline’s transformation efforts.
