Five Charged in Connection with Liam Payne’s Death in Argentina
Five people have been formally charged in connection with the death of One Direction singer Liam Payne in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on October 16. The 31-year-old star tragically died after falling from the third-floor balcony of a hotel. Authorities have charged several individuals involved, including hotel staff and Payne’s close friend.
Those Charged:
- Hotel Manager Gilda Martin and Receptionist Esteban Grassi, along with Payne’s friend Roger Nores, have been charged with manslaughter.
- Hotel Worker Ezequiel Pereyra and Waiter Braian Paiz have been charged with supplying drugs.
The Charges: According to Argentina’s prosecutor’s office, the charges stem from a series of events leading up to Payne’s death. Judge Laura Bruniard has decided to proceed with the case to the trial phase, though the defendants’ lawyers may appeal.
- Ezequiel Pereyra (EDP) is accused of selling cocaine to Liam Payne on the 15th and 16th of October.
- Braian Paiz (BNP) allegedly sold cocaine to Payne on two occasions on October 14.
- Roger Nores (RLN), Payne’s friend, faces manslaughter charges for allegedly abandoning Payne in a vulnerable state, despite knowing about his struggles with addiction.
- Gilda Martin (GAM), the hotel manager, is charged with manslaughter for failing to prevent Payne from being taken to his hotel room, where the balcony posed a serious risk.
- Esteban Grassi (ERG), the receptionist, is also charged with manslaughter for instructing three people to drag Payne to his room despite his inability to stand or move safely.
Judge Bruniard emphasized that while the actions of the accused did not appear to be intentional, they did create a dangerous situation that led to Payne’s death. If convicted, those charged with manslaughter could face prison sentences ranging from one to five years. The drug suppliers face much harsher penalties, with potential sentences of four to 15 years in prison.
The Investigation: Following a post-mortem, authorities revealed that toxicology tests showed traces of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in Payne’s system. The cause of death was determined to be “multiple trauma” and “internal and external hemorrhage” from the fall. Medical reports suggest that Payne may have been unconscious or semi-conscious at the time of the fall, ruling out the possibility of a conscious or voluntary act.
Roger Nores’ Account: In a statement to TMZ after Payne’s death, Roger Nores, who was with the singer shortly before his fall, described Payne as “playful and happy” when they parted ways about an hour before the tragic incident.
Events Leading to the Tragedy: Earlier, hotel staff had called emergency services twice, reporting that Payne had consumed excessive drugs and alcohol and was damaging his hotel room. Authorities later found substances and broken furniture in the room.
Liam Payne’s Legacy:Liam Payne rose to fame as a member of the globally successful boy band One Direction, which formed on The X Factor in 2010. After the band went on hiatus in 2016, Payne pursued a solo career. His death has left fans and loved ones devastated, and his funeral in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, was attended by his former bandmates—Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Zayn Malik—as well as his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, and former partner Cheryl, with whom he shared a son.
