Grizzlies Rookie Jaylen Wells Suffers Broken Wrist After Scary Fall During Dunk Attempt
Memphis Grizzlies rookie Jaylen Wells was stretchered off the court after a terrifying fall during a dunk attempt in Tuesday night’s game against the Charlotte Hornets. Thankfully, while the 21-year-old suffered a broken wrist, the injury could have been far worse.
The incident took place in the second quarter as Wells, who has been averaging 10.4 points per game this season, went up for a one-handed slam. As he was in the air, Hornets guard KJ Simpson fouled him mid-flight, sending Wells crashing hard to the Spectrum Center court. The impact was jarring, and it appeared that Wells may have hit his head as well.
The frightening scene quickly unfolded, with Grizzlies players, including star Ja Morant, and team staff rushing to Wells’ side. It was a moment no one on the court could easily forget.
Wells was carefully lifted onto a stretcher, but fans were relieved when his father, Fred Wells, shared an update, reassuring everyone that Jaylen was “awake and alert,” though he had a swollen wrist and pain in his face and back.
Wells’ agent, Aman Dhesi, confirmed the injury—a broken right wrist—and mentioned that Wells would be receiving ongoing medical care to aid his recovery. The rookie later took to Instagram, sharing a photo of himself in the hospital with his arm in a cast.
Grizzlies interim head coach Tuomas Iisalo reflected on the incident, calling it a “tough situation” for the team. He added, “He’s a tough kid, and he’ll have a great recovery, but it really puts things into perspective.”
Despite the unfortunate injury, the Grizzlies went on to win the game 124-100, a bright spot in an otherwise somber night.
We wish Jaylen Wells a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the court soon!
