The film features a star-studded cast, including Mason Thames as Hiccup, a young Viking who befriends a dragon, Toothless.
Joining Thames is Nico Parker as Astrid, Hiccup’s courageous love interest, and Gerard Butler as Stoick the Vast, Hiccup’s estranged father and leader of Berk. Nick Frost returns as Gobber, Hiccup’s mentor. The film also stars Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz, and Murray McArthur.
Plot Overview
Set on the rugged island of Berk, the story follows the long-standing feud between Vikings and dragons. Hiccup, the inventive yet often overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast, defies tradition by befriending Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unexpected bond challenges Viking society’s core beliefs and opens the door to a new understanding of dragons.
As the story unfolds, Hiccup, alongside Astrid and the quirky blacksmith Gobber, confronts a world torn by fear and misunderstanding. An ancient threat emerges, and Hiccup’s friendship with Toothless becomes vital in shaping a new future for both dragons and Vikings.
A Bold New Direction
The live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon is being directed by Dean DeBlois, who also directed the original animated trilogy. The animated films, based on Cressida Cowell’s bestselling books, were released between 2010 and 2019, each earning critical acclaim and Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature.
DeBlois promises that the live-action version will be even more intense than its animated predecessors. “The stakes are higher, with a fully photo-real dragon stomping around trying to kill him,” he told Empire.
How to Train Your Dragon will soar into theaters on June 13, 2024.
