How a Small Italian Court Shaped Kobe Bryant into an NBA Legend

In the quiet, picturesque city of Reggio Emilia, Italy, there’s a small, unassuming playground with basketball hoops fastened to opposite walls. The court’s worn surface, surrounded by bicycles and overlooked by the spire of a local church, might seem an unlikely backdrop for greatness. Yet, this tiny court played a pivotal role in shaping one of basketball’s all-time greats: Kobe Bryant.

A New Beginning in Italy

In 1983, Kobe Bryant’s father, Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, left the NBA for a basketball career in Europe, uprooting his family to Italy. Just six years old, Kobe was immersed in a completely new culture, language, and way of life. Despite these challenges, he quickly adapted and embraced his new environment.

Reggio Emilia, the family’s final stop in Italy, became a special place for young Kobe. Here, he developed his love for basketball and made lifelong friends, including Marco Ferraroni, a teammate on the local youth basketball team.

Endless Afternoons on the Court

Ferraroni, who appears in CNN’s documentary “Kobe: The Making of a Legend,” fondly remembers spending hours playing with Kobe on the court near the local church. Whether it was one-on-one games or three-point competitions, Kobe’s dedication was unmatched.

“We spent hours and hours there,” Ferraroni recalled. “Kobe was always available to play basketball. He didn’t want to leave the court, especially if he had lost the last game. He would always say, ‘Play one more, play one more.’”

Even as a child, Kobe’s relentless drive and focus set him apart. Though smaller than many of his peers, his mentality and determination were extraordinary – traits that would later define his legendary NBA career.

A Childhood of Passion and Determination

While basketball was Kobe’s main passion, he was less interested in school. Giada Maslovaric, a close childhood friend, recalls his first day at their new school in Reggio Emilia. Tasked with looking after him, she quickly became one of his closest companions.

The pair spent countless hours riding bikes through cobbled streets, enjoying Reggio Emilia’s famous gelato, and dreaming of the future.

“Kobe would always say he’d play for the NBA,” Maslovaric said. “Whenever the topic came up, he wasn’t joking. I laughed, but he never did. He’d simply say, ‘I’ll get there.’”

The Journey to the NBA

Kobe’s dream came true. After returning to the United States, he quickly rose to prominence, becoming the first guard in history to be drafted into the NBA straight out of high school in 1996. Joining the Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe would go on to become a five-time NBA champion, a global icon, and a beloved father and husband.

A Heartfelt Reunion in Reggio Emilia

In 2003, years after leaving Italy, Kobe returned to Reggio Emilia and sought out Maslovaric. He found her at her mother’s clothing store, and the two reconnected.

During their meeting, Maslovaric was struck by Kobe’s reflections on fame. To her, Reggio Emilia seemed like the last place where Kobe had experienced normalcy. He confided that his rise to stardom came with isolation and challenges, likening his life to a “stunning cage” made of platinum and diamonds. Yet, he explained that the sacrifice was worth it for the joy he felt on the court.

A Lasting Legacy in Reggio Emilia

Kobe’s untimely death in 2020, along with his daughter Gianna, left the world and the city of Reggio Emilia in mourning. The community honored him by naming a plaza after him and Gianna, and murals celebrating his life now adorn the city.

Maslovaric sees Kobe’s legacy as a beacon of hope for the children of Reggio Emilia. “Kobe has left Reggio with the message that every child, no matter how ordinary their life, can achieve their dreams,” she said. “And that’s something extraordinary.”

From Italy to Immortality

Kobe Bryant’s journey from a tiny Italian playground to NBA superstardom is a testament to his unparalleled determination and love for the game. That small court in Reggio Emilia wasn’t just where a basketball player practiced; it was where a legend was born.
