Honduras Plane Crash Kills 12, Including Garifuna Music Icon Aurelio Martínez Suazo

A tragic plane crash off the coast of Honduras has claimed the lives of 12 people, including renowned Garifuna musician Aurelio Martínez Suazo. The accident occurred on Monday night when a Lanhsa Airlines flight crashed into the sea shortly after takeoff from Roatán, en route to La Ceiba on the mainland.

Crash Details and Investigation

The aircraft, carrying 17 passengers and crew, failed to gain full altitude before plummeting into the ocean. Local fishermen played a critical role in rescuing five survivors, who were quickly transported to the hospital for treatment. One passenger remains missing as authorities continue recovery efforts.

The Honduran Civil Aeronautics Agency has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, but officials have not yet provided a preliminary explanation.

Aurelio Martínez Suazo: A Cultural Icon Lost

Among the victims was Aurelio Martínez Suazo, a celebrated Garifuna musician and former Honduran congressman. A native of the Gracias a Dios region, Martínez Suazo was a passionate advocate for Garifuna heritage, a cultural group of mixed African and Indigenous descent. He also held U.S. citizenship.

His nephew, Ángel Aparicio Fernández Martínez, who performed alongside him, expressed deep sorrow over the loss: “He was the pillar of our family and an inspiration to many.”

A Legacy in Music

Martínez Suazo began his career with Los Gatos Bravos before forming his own band, Lita Ariran. His breakthrough album, Garifuna Soul, propelled him to international recognition, earning him opportunities to perform across Europe and the United States.

Humberto Castillo, president of the Association of Afro-descendants of the Sula Valley, called Martínez Suazo “the ambassador of Garifuna culture”, highlighting his contributions to preserving and promoting Garifuna and Miskito music.

Survivors and Recovery Efforts

Among the survivors was his representative, Helene Odile Guivarch, a French citizen. The bodies of the deceased have been transported from Roatán to the morgue in San Pedro Sula for identification and further examination.

The crash marks a devastating loss for the Garifuna community and the global music scene. Tributes have poured in from across the world, honoring Martínez Suazo’s contributions to music, culture, and politics.
